honestly thank god for jen richards because she seems to be the only person involved with mayfair witches who knows and cares about the source material, and is a long time anne rice fan. pandora and jesse are two of her favourite ar characters, so she clearly has good taste

Evelyn (a Black woman) being the first Mayfair woman Lasher chooses to target violently instead of just fucking her consensually and watching her die afterward, while talking about Darwin (congrats to Lestat on picking up a textbook at some point and also managing to fuck things up in an entirely different show), who was historically utilized as an excuse for racism and eugenics. Evelyn only being exposed to Lasher in the first place because of the presumably sexual harm Cortland inflicted on her that made her distrustful of the Mayfairs, harm that was of course covered up since Cortland is the powerful white man who dominates this supposedly martriachal family. Rowan choosing to let Cortland roam free in a house full of young women and girls despite knowing his history of incestous sexual violence towards young women and girls, ostensibly out of a desire to protect the Mayfair women. Cortland's undermining Rowan being viewed as more of a threat than any possible violence he could or has inflicted on women in and out of the house. Rowan just assuming her mother was Cortland's only victim and being genuinely shocked about Dolly Jean holding back information about her own sister's assault. Rowan trying to make amends by locking Cortland up and calling Lasher out for his role in the cycles of harm that have been poisoning the family for centuries, but still relying enough on that family, that house, that she accidentally imprisons both Jojo and Daphne when Daphne tries to leave it. Rowan being attached enough to Lasher and the familial/magical power he presents that she tries to stop Ciprien from harming him. the tendency to treat Lasher as a cause rather than a symptom in a way that makes it impossible to deal with either. etc.

(Disclaimer: It‘s been ages since I read the books on the Mayfair Witches and they were not my favorites. So this is an almost unbased-on-canon reaction list (totally apart from the fact that the show only keeps… loosely to them).)

I know I know canon but who calls their child Lasher instead of sweety or honey, at least in the beginning.

Rowan is taking it all surprisingly well in stride. The plea for politeness made me cackle.

That weird scanning light indicating Rowan‘s healing powers… I mean… almost cute but a bit IDK. It feels kinda cheesy. Not… magical, if that makes sense.

Rowan trying out her healing powers on the kid is… nicely done, and also the effort it takes, but… the shaking off happens a bit fast.

The “elders“ know everything. Please, please, PLEASE keep the canon elders. It would eventually, ultimately add so much depth and cohesion between the shows. Please.

Jojo is still a highlight.

The … rejection is very abrupt. And there‘s a discussion missing afterwards. You know as per the why and such. Like… she should have challenged him there. Especially since he insinuated and she then goes and asks the questions to a statue (okay kinda). Still. Weird scripting choices.

What are those visual effects at the club.

All in all… fairly intersting but not riveting and with quite a few weak points in dialogue/script and narrative once more. The effects take some getting used to.

Ciprien and the Talamasca as well as Moira interest me the most.

Mayfair Witches S2E4 (Show & Book Spoilers): The Taltos are a-go, baby!

Deflecting responsibility, lying, and prioritizing her booty calls with the dude who chose his career over her, LOL. If I were Moira I'd've lit Rowan a new arsehole speaking to me like that, when that's MY sister stuck in limbo in Rowan's cursed house cuz she's incompetent AF and effed up the spell. Poor Jojo & Daphne don't deserve this BS.

IDK how Esta expects us to actually liked Rowan as a MC, this heifer is the literal worst and I'm getting SO sick of her omg. Like, this is way different from Lestat, who at least brings comedic relief & charisma uniqueness nerve & talent, even when he's being the literal devil. Rowan & her actress bring NOTHING to this show but stress.

And clearly the whole fam agrees, since they're tryna put Moira in Rowan's place as the next designee! 🤣

See, in the books it made sense--Rowan was literally MISSING after Lasher was born, on the run cuz she knew Michael was tryna kill Lasher by any means necessary for killing their kid. Then Lasher abducted her & had her tied up AMC!Claudia style with Bruce, and she got so sick when she became pregnant that she almost died. The Mayfairs LOVED Rowan, but they HAD to name book!Mona as the new designee, cuz Rowan was at death's door. You felt BAD for Rowan, cuz so much bad stuff happened to her that it was just undeniable that although she'd been Lasher's accomplice at first, she became his victim. THIS heifer on AMC though has no such excuses.

TBH, I've been fast-forwarding through ALL of these dry AF cringe AF lame AF scenes with Rowan & Lark. I Do. Not. CARE. Esta in the Insider hyping them up: "You can feel the energy that runs between them in a way that's very exciting~!"--stfu no I can't. 😒 Then he finally asks a relevant question, and she's still lying, so wtrvr. I'm glad he's going behind her back to test her DNA and match it with Lasher's; she's a garbage liar. Don't just use me as your free geneticist (and booty call) and lie to my effing face; bye Felicia.

If only there was a BOOK CHARACTER who was an ARCHITECT who MARRIED the designee of the family and who was good with CONSTRUCTION and worked with his HANDS to RENOVATE the house~! Gee gosh golly, I wonder who that could be~! 🤔🤔🤔🤔

honestly this week's episode of Witch Show Inspired by the Mayfair Novels was a transitional episode to get lasher out of NOLA to his big trip to scotland, but it was still really interesting from the cortland-jojo drama to rowan f l o p p i n g to lasher taking the advice he would take from a vampire and getting a broken beer bottle to the back for it (s/o evelyn mayfair for being one of the few with a spine!). sorry to ciprien (beautiful man who needs to be a proper leading man on a show that will let him be shirtless more) but the talamasca stuff isn't as compelling as i was hoping it to be because they left subtlety behind when they gave his untrustworthy boss that erases memories for fun the last name of escher, lmao.

but it's still just so weird to have this show be pretty good and still pulling from the novels when s1 was SUCH a hot mess express the was throwing shit at the walls like TV used to do circa 2006 and clearly only one person had tackled reading the witching hour. (someday i'll get an adaptation that sets it in like 1988 and has michael and debra and at least some of the weird incest and sex stuff rice was working with in that novel.)

and i'm pretty sure he was made up for the show. but he could be based off some combination of different book characters (kinda like how they took a lot of mayfair cousins and just condensed them into jojo for the mayfair witches show)

I’m so bummed about how absolutely horrible The Mayfair Witches adaptation was done. And by the same network that completely knocked Interview With The Vampire right out of the park. Both of them underwent massive changes, that’s to be expected with any adaptation… but only one nailed it.

Interview changed up some pretty big details in the story Anne Rice told, but it did so to better suit the audience and times without losing any of the magic in the books. The century time jump didn’t change the dynamics between the characters, Louis family didn’t ruin his inner turmoil, it added a layer to it. His changed position in society from plantation owner to business man and heir didn’t change his struggles with mortality and humanity, it added a layer that was so well done. The changes ultimately served the characters and therefore the story.

The Mayfair Witches did none of that. They changed everything but it added nothing to the story. Instead they stripped away all the characters feelings and motivations and depth and left us with something flat and boring. It wasn’t even the big things like trading in Micheal for Cip (who’s very pretty and totally wasted on this flat show.) But stripping Rowan of her drive, her resolve and all her backbone was a choice. Making Cortland a caricature was a choice. Not developing a relationship at all between Rowan and Cip was a choice. Infact the only choice that was correct was Jojo, both the character and the actress were a joy in such a bleak damn adaptation.

I can’t wait for season 2 of Interview, and kinda hope something shakes loose and they get a clue and cancel the witches.

Spoilers for Episode 8 of Mayfair Witches if you haven’t watched.

Is she lactating? Yes. Good I’m sure she’d want to help her brother. Call transport she’s coming with us. The fuck. The boss really needs to be taken out.

I know what he knows. I know what you did to my mother. Rowan sweetie then you should also know Lasher didn’t stop it either. Neither that nor you being taken nor Deirdre being killed. It should inform you of how he feels about who he’s connected to. Worth something only until they get him as far as they can. How he’ll treat her is staring her straight in the face on top of how he’s already treated her.

When it was revealed Cortland was the one dragging her body I was like wow quite a feat for someone with ALS.

Keith should have minded his business and done his job.

I wonder who’s going to lead the family now Jojo or Dolly Jean.

Out of all the episodes this one was my least favorite.

Making the baby/child completely white despite having one non white parent is exactly what they did to Ryn’s baby in Siren.

I think Dolly Jean knew what Cortland did to Deirdre she’s just trying to cover her ass now that he’s outed.

It upsets me that everyone is just so okay with forcing this woman to have a baby she made it very clear she didn’t want. Most especially the designees that came before her. How dare they make a deal then continue to uphold it on her behalf.

My hope is for season 2 is that Lasher and Rowan talk some shit out.
