Jojo is not only the hottest, but most stylish Mayfair. Reblog if you agree.
Not me downloading the Mayfair Witches, a show I have zero interest in, just to try and fill the hole left by my beloved vampire show.
Thank fuck we've had S3 confirmed already or I would be losing my mind.

Propaganda
Anna May Wong (The Thief of Bagdad, Shanghai Express)—Wong was the first Chinese American movie star, arguably the first Asian woman to make it big in American films. Though the racism of the time often forced her into stereotypical roles, awarded Asian leading roles to white actors in yellowface, and prohibited on-screen romance between actors of different races, she delivered powerful and memorable performances. When Hollywood bigotry got to be too much, she made movies in Europe. Wong was intellectually curious, a fashion icon, and a strong advocate for authentic Asian representation in cinema. And, notably for the purposes of this tournament, absolutely gorgeous.
Josephine Baker (The Siren of the Tropics, ZouZou)— Josephine Baker was an American born actress, singer, and utter icon of the period, creating the 1920s banana skirt look. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion film. She fought in the French resistance in WWII, given a Legion of Honour, as well as refusing to perform in segregated theatres in the US. She was bisexual, a fighter, and overall an absolutely incredible woman as well as being extremely attractive.
This is round 6 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Anna May Wong propaganda:
"She so so gorgeous!! Due to Hollywood racism she was pretty limited in the roles she got to play but even despite that she’s so captivating and deserves to be known as a leading lady in her own right!! When she’s on screen in Shanghai Express I can’t look away, which is saying something because Marlene Dietrich is also in that film."
"SHE IS ON THE BACK OF QUARTERS also she was very smart and able to speak multiple languages and is a fashion icon on top of the acting/singing"
"Paved the way for Asian American actresses AND TOTAL HOTTIE!!! She broke boundaries and made it her mission to smash stereotypes of Asian women in western film (at the time, they were either protrayed them as delicate and demure or scheming and evil). In 1951, she made history with her television show The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, the first-ever U.S. television show starring an Asian-American series lead (paraphrased from Wikipedia). Also, never married and rumor has it that she had an affair with Marlene Dietrich. We love a Controversial Queen!"
"She's got that Silent Era smoulder™ that I think transcends the very stereotypical roles in which she was typically cast. Also looks very hot smouldering opposite Marlene Dietrich in "Shanghai Express"; there's kiss energy there."
"Hot as hell and chronically overlooked in her time, she's truly phenomenal and absolutely stunning"
"A story of stardom unavoidably marred by Hollywood racism; Wong's early-career hype was significantly derailed by the higher-up's reluctance to have an Asian lead, and things only got worse when the Hayes code came down and she suddenly *couldn't* be shown kissing a white man--even if that white man was in yellowface. After being shoved into the Dragon Lady role one too many times, she took her career to other continents for many years. Still, she came back to America eventually, being more selective in her roles, speaking out against Asian stereotypes, and in the midst of all of this finding the time to be awarded both the title of "World's Best Dressed Woman" by Mayfair Mannequin Society of New York and an honorary doctorate by Peking University."
"Incredible beauty, incredible actress, incredible story."
"-flapper fashion ICON. look up her fits please <3 -rumors of lesbianism due to her Close Friendships with marlene dietrich & cecil cunningham, among others -leveraged her star power to criticize the racist depictions of Chinese and Asian characters in Hollywood, as well as raise money and popular support for China & Chinese refugees in the 1930s and 40s. -face card REFUSED to decline"
Josephine Baker:
Black, American-born, French dancer and singer. Phenomenal sensation, took music-halls by storm. Famous in the silent film era.
Let's talk La Revue Negre, Shuffle Along. The iconique banana outfit? But also getting a Croix de Guerre and full military honors at burial in Paris due to working with the Resistance.
She exuded sex, was a beautiful dancer, vivacious, and her silliness and humor added to her attractiveness. She looked just as good in drag too.
So I know she was more famous for other stuff than movies and her movies weren’t Hollywood but my first exposure to her was in her films so I’ve always thought of her as a film actress first and foremost. Also she was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture so I think that warrants an entry
Iconic! Just look up anything about her life. She was a fascinating woman.

mayfair witches s2 is here so here are my quick-ish thoughts on s1 (just completed 3rd rewatch) before i start s2
i re-read the witching hour when the show aired and i still love it. yeah it could use some trimming, but it would only turn a ~900pp book into a ~700pp book. to dickride just a little bit, rice not only demonstrates her mastery of southern gothic horror (just read the first chapter for a taste), she comments on women's relationship to power, sex, and reproduction (specifically the power to reproduce), and men's exploitation of (mayfair men) and refusal to understand (talamasca men) women with power, while also promoting new orleans (seriously, a good 1/3 of the book is a tourism ad for new orleans and the southeast gulf region of the us).
my enjoyment of the show is largely (if not entirely) based on my love of the mayfair witch series, so i forgive it for a lot of its shortcomings (i.e., people complain about the pacing, but the book moves even more slowly - rowan and lasher don't talk until like page 700 of a 900+pp book). there are actually a lot of things i love/appreciate about the show - eps. 1, 2, 5 (always a banger episode), and 8; carlotta, dolly jean, josephine, odette, and tessa; ciprien (fuck michael curry forreal sorry to your self-insert anne); the book fan easter eggs; even the creepy talamasca guy (brecht?). that said, i can only rate the show a 7.5/10 (fyi - this is up from 6.5 on this rewatch - time has been kind to this show, and it helps to not have iwtv s1 at the forefront of my mind).
my major hangups (still):
rowan's lack of curiosity/ambition to control mayfair wealth and power
lasher reveal in ep 1 (hate that so bad)
failing to establish the mayfair legacy (both the line of designees and the value of the trust)
failing to establish the mayfairs in general - who are all the women in the "coven" in ep 6?
having a bunch of black members of a prominent former slave-holding southern family with absolutely no friction (sus!)
the decision to focus only on suzanne but not show her pass lasher to deborah
poor use of setting and mediocre/bad fashion (rowan's funeral outfit is offensive as a southerner)
fear of the words "incest" and "rape"
science plot killed in the first episode :/
ciprien getting banished to the shadow realm for 2 episodes
killing off all the members of the mra plot 1 episode after setting them up
anyway, i'm excited for s2 - trailer looked cool, plus the second book has my favorite (and most problematic) character - mona mayfair. i think they changed mona to "moira" or something and aged her up (expected - no one wants to see the events of lasher on their screen). i haven't re-read lasher so i really have little idea of how this season will go, but i'm in for the long haul. so here goes...
#mayfair witches#the witching hour#guess i need a witch tag#honestly surprised at how much more i enjoyed s1 this rewatch#fingers crossed on s2!

I just watched episodes 2 through 4 of season 2 of Lives of the Mayfair Witches. Though I am enjoying the show I still really hate this TV universe's depiction of Anne Rice's vampires. First, why do they ALL smoke? It actually kind of takes me out of the story that they all are puffing away like an early 80s "edgy" teen movie stereotype. None of Anne Rice's vampires smoked in the books. Just Daniel before he was turned. They're all so shallow and the blur speed effect is right out of Queen of the damned (Movie). Finally, the hissing. Having the vampires bear their fangs and hiss is an old TV and movie cliche. Anne Rice's vampires never did that, just as they were never sloppy when they fed. They were a relief from the tired tropes. Now all we have are these tired tropes. These vampires are like the South Park Goths but with fangs. Now outside of my annoyance at the depiction of the vampires, I do like The Talamasca's mysterious supernatural prison. It feels right out of an online role playing game I did back in the 90s and early 2000s. I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for Cortland and I love Josephine. My one other big complaint is that like with season 2 of Interview with The Vampire there is a LOT of filler. I barely had to look up from writing while the episodes played. Almost nothing happened at all in episode 2 of season 2. Also I kind of hope the character Escher dies horribly.

welcome LIEUTENANT THEODORE HAWTHORNE to the season! the ton will surely rejoice at your arrival. you have 12 hours to freshen up and send in your blog, before you’re forgotten entirely. (philip froissant is now taken)
TW: ABUSE, PTSD
full name: theodore warren hawthorne
nicknames: theo
birthday: feburary 11, 1783
birthplace: mayfair- london, england
when did they debut: 3+ years ago
status: betrothed
family: peter hawthorne (deceased brother), beatrice hawthorne (sister-in-law), evelina hawthorne (older sister), josephine hawthorne (younger sister
hobbies: fencing, reading, exercising, billards, horsebacking riding, swimming
likes: early mornings, hot tea, traveling, bourbon, wrestling
dislikes: small talk, rough water, rose water, sunburns
you were the second son in the hawthorne family, but somehow at birth, you already didn't measure up. your older brother was tougher, louder, and meaner. you faded into the background, only appearing when necessary. your father was mean and so was your mother. you found comfort in your siblings- well, most of them. you don't understand how peter could be so cruel? you were cut from the same cloth, right? what does that say about you?
you grow up under harsh words and rough shoves. as a young man in the family, you feel responsible for your sisters. you deserved more. you all did.
when you are fifteen, you have the chance to escape. it was either more years of punishment or the open sea. though it killed you, you saw your escape. you enlisted in the royal navy at fifteen, leaving your family behind.
you don't see them very often in your teen years. you grow up among your crewman, learning discipline, cleanliness, honor, and respect. you keep tabs with your family, but it's not the same as seeing them. every time you think about returning- you're too scared, like a little kid. you feel guilty that you left your family behind. but you couldn't stand being there. you promise to write and to send money.
you've seen battle, you've seen fights. but nothing scares you more than home. when you receive word that peter has passed away, you're shocked. you're not sad, yet there's an ache in your chest. is this relief?
you have served fifteen years in the royal navy and are classified as a lieutenant. you have an arranged betrothed. you figured it was easier than meeting someone organically, plus, if she is a woman of good status, it will help your family. it's the least you could do.
now you are in london, to reunite with your family. are they strangers to you? you love them so much. you also must meet your betrothed. you're home and it feels different, and you're not sure if that's a good thing.

Pelos Céus, HENRIETTA LOCKHART, the TENDERHEART chegou a Hearthstone Hall.

trigger warnings for: parental death, death by childbirth, gambling addiction.
the former baron and baroness dormer were once forces to be reckoned in, in the public eye. the first of his line to attend the house of the lords, and the minor cousin of a gentry family who became the diamond of her season, joseph and amelia were both gregarious and expansive, and their match was an envious one, both for their matching of wits and of the matters of the heart — they were desperately in love, and one accommodated and partnered the other: amelia aided him in relations outside of the parliament while commanding their household, and he rejoiced in oratory, as well as giving her every opportunity to shine on society.
her last labor came as a surprise — it was by the end of the season, and despite being heavily pregnant, amelia would not waste precious time, but the babe came too early. the birth was a mess, and though the child would come out hearty and loud, lady amelia would remain quiet and pale for the rest of the week. joseph fell in denial, believing his wife could somehow recover, but by the end of the week, amelia had made her peace with dreaded death, ordering her husband to care for their children and their life together, and naming their only daughter augusta, after a princess the lady had once much admired.
it was the least to say joseph did not entirely abide to his wife's plans. though there were some self - insistence, at least at first, not to forgo his family — particularly, augusta never believed her father wished her harm or believed her some evil that took away his beloved wife, nor did he ever remarry, when he as well could have had — his social excellence seemed to have been tightly connected to amelia, and, without her to guide him, the baron soon turned to vices. it was a method of relief: long nights with drinks over games of cards, locked in rooms with his friends from the parliament, but once friendly games became a constant monthly debit — for joseph's luck had run out, it seemed — it was felt. tongues began to wag, a rumor here and there about how often joseph was politely escorted away or denied from gambling tables, or how much he lingered at the tracks, and at boxing rings; when the london house was "closed off", "lended" to a "friend of the family" for the season, all that was said was that the family needed the fresh airs of buckinghamshire, away from the memories of lady amelia and her immense joy.
for augusta, however, those memories were important. without the guidance of her mother, she relied on her ghost, on the many portraits, on words of her brothers and father and every one who had once felt the glimmer of lady amelia. though in distance, augusta wished to emulate her mother: her beauty, her elegance, her charisma. like a silly girl, she would play with her clothes in front of the mirror, reigning over a society of dolls. her innocence was often interrupted, however, for her father's sake. there were costs to be cut, no matter how much she begged for a gown of the finest silk or for a new hat. at some point, her brother, impatience with the burden of the keeping of the house and of the family name due to their father's negligence, went on to show her the disorganization of the books, and the lack thereof of funds to spend in more frivolities than necessary for appearance's sake.
already better at card games than her father at the cusp of teenagehood, she tried to learn accounting. her odds were improved when she realized she took to numbers better than her peers; she was too young to handle the household finances, but alongside the governess, augusta sought to familiarize herself with the matters of keeping the household, taking a load off her brother's back. by the time she was of age, she controlled the ascott house herself, gladly so, and was more than eager to debut and return to society. london was a dream come true, but not only its societal aspect. augusta realized, along with her siblings, that there were gains to be had, less explored by those of higher society — and how foolish they were, not to see the opportunity spark!
tragedy struck merciless when the new baroness dormer, too, found her demise in the birthing bed. repeating his father's tale, baron dormer returned to ascott house to find relief in the fresh air, and though augusta more or less willingly accompanied him, instead of wallowing in purposeless misery, the family found gold on the purchase of a less than savory establishment, the white rabbit. theirs in all but in name, the dormer siblings are partners, and, of course, that includes augusta, who takes care of the books of the place meticulously, always seeking for an opportunity to improve their gains, as hands on as she can possibly be under the cloak of distance. naturally, the recent misfortune situation at the white rabbit much displeases her, but she is nothing if not positive this will be but a forgotten misdemeanor in no time, and the white rabbit — and their fortunes — shall continue to rise.
[ personality ] ⸻
grasping, opportunistic, materialistic, quick witted and dissimulated on the inside, on the outside, augusta is the typically accomplished gentlewoman, with practiced tunes in the pianoforte, polished steps of the cotillion and memorized pleasantries spoken with a honeyed tongue, paired with big eyes gleaming with mirth and faux innocence. she relies on keeping a clean image, and has no qualms to lie, fake, buy and manipulate her way into forcing the belief that her family’s reputation is unfounded ( #girlboss #gaslight #gatekeep, so true of her ). though she is contented with their entrepreneuring agenda — finding that running successful businesses built by them and not simply inherited all ready as many aristocrats do is very fulfilling, especially as a woman that would not have a place otherwise — she is eager for a spot in society as well, wishing she could shine as much as her mother once had.
[ tidbids ] ⸻
is mildly (quite) scared of horses due to an incident on the track as a child, and never learned how to horse ride.
[ wanted connections ] ⸻
the dormer family! they are deliciously cunning, but also very tight - or, at the very least, augusta believes herself able to manage both men and bring them together to uphold the family legacy as a whole, not just individuals. for the elder, i generally imagine that he has taken their father's failures and followed a path of improvement, and the younger, he may have been in the army or something? both of them have had a hand on bringing her up as a person, despite the not so big age difference between them all.
the white rabbit employees as a whole, but particularly, the madame, whom would be aware of the family's involvement with the estabilishment and augusta's, and fighter one, employed under the dormer state and whom i imagine to have a secret relationship of the romantic and/or sexual nature with augusta; it's not entirely pleasant, because she isn't, but there is a bit too much affection in there to loose the attachment ( slutty rec would be jack o'connell :cattongue: ).
friends, new or old! this also includes people who could have tried to pull away or have succeeded at that, believing the dormers to be too shady / improper, or people who don't believe the rumors ( augusta is certainly lying her ass off about it, so )
people who have hostile feelings towards the dormers for their alleged shady behaviors, and may try to keep them out of society somehow, which frustrates augusta as she longs to be a functioning part of it all. they could either believe being able to see past the airy nature she keeps and believe her a wolf just as her brothers, or not notice her dissimulation
regulars at the white rabbit, whom augusta would know either by official bookkeeping, or by gossip. she may use the knowledge of their enjoyment of the estabilishment to blackmail or simply to amuse herself. alternatively, people who owe debts to the dormers, or to the white rabbit, would also fall on this category
crushes, exes, etc! augusta may have a constant interest in the fighter, but she has a hidden romantic nature that has her fixating on pretty people as well as pretty things, and she just may be genuinely sweeter to those who hold either such exterior beauty or objects of luxury ( obviously open to women, men, etc, with a bit of a preference towards women )
suitor (s). augusta is not in a rush to marry, but if she is to do so, she would like it to be of high position and of good finantial situation; either way, feelings are not at all involved, nor does she want them to be.

Finished season 1 of Mayfair Witches. The season in general was all over the place, and things happened REALLY fast. The main character's personality is also really scattered and while I understand that could be intentional given the context, it also it just comes across as really frustrating and annoying.
My favourite character is absolutely Josephine (played by the excellent Jen Richards). She's the most likeable character imo, has the best outfits, is the most rational. Her (and Ciprien) feel the most like a real people in comparison to everyone else.

Well, that’s that
It took eight episodes, but they finally revealed what part Odette (Ciprien’s sister) plays in all of this. I’m so glad I stuck with it this whole season. 🙄
No point in beating the dead equine anymore. …but I will poke it with a stick. Mayfair Witches is 100% fan fiction inspired by the characters of Anne Rice’s The Witching Hour. Whatever. We’ll just stick it on the refrigerator next to the handprint thanksgiving turkey the toddler made in preschool. “Look what our little Renoir did! …out of dry pasta and finger paint, no less! SO proud!”
Albrecht? Shady, hypocritical, and oh so convenient. (Does that count as a retcon?)
At the end of the season, I can only care about two characters: Jojo (Josephine, Cortland’s daughter) and Mawbel (the Talamasca librarian). …and have no idea how AMC is going to recover enough for MW to crossover into IWTV.

Josephine 'Jojo' Mayfair - Mayfair Witches
[40-50, hospital board member/witch/prophet, trans woman, she/her, pansexual, fc: Jen Richards]
Born to the infamous Mayfair family in the late 1970s, Jojo lived a life of privilege with a father who loved her and used his status and money to provide her with everything she could ever want or need. Jojo grew up without a mother and her father was a somewhat erratic figure in her life with both his job and his desire to party, her only source of real stability being a nanny and her school routine. Despite the mild instability, Jojo has many happy and normal memories with her father and considers herself to have had a fairly normal childhood that she wouldn't change anything about.
Ever since she was a child, Jojo has experienced visions and dreams of the future that always proved true in one way or another. Some proved hard to understand and others were clear as day. Some happened within minutes and others happened decades down the line. She has an incredibly good memory for these things, but it also proved useful to write them down. Jojo was not the first person in the family to show signs of magic, in fact their family had a long history of witches going back centuries. Not all Mayfairs had powers, but quite a few did and it was considered normal. Some parts of the family accepted them as gifts from god or another benevolent figure to be stoked and grown while others believed them to be a mark of the devil to be suppressed and burnt out.
As an adult, Jojo has learned to follow these visions and use them to help others. She's also taught herself, with the help of her father and a handful of family members, other types of magic that she's gained through a near literal deal with the devil. Most of her time though is spent simply trying to enjoy life for everything it has to offer, but she does work on the local hospital's board in an attempt to make sure her father's money goes to the places that really need it. She has considered becoming a doctor, but has yet to have any real desire to pursue the career and put the work in.
Josephine is the type of person who loves finding any excuse to celebrate (a trait she gets from her father), but she also finds it incredibly easy to get serious when the situation calls for it. She's incredibly protective over those she cares about and has no issue cursing those who wrong her or the people in her life. Her shoulder is available for those who need a place to cry and she's capable of either finding a needed distraction, the space to feel emotions, or offer real advice, depending on what the other person wants or needs. She isn't often emotionally in distress, but when she is, she can find it hard to open up to those in her life, not often to any emotional detriment though. Her biggest emotional obstacle currently is her inability to carry a child, but she does believe that when it is her time, she will either conceive a child through magical means or adopt a child who is truly meant to be hers. She doesn't currently believe she has any trauma outside of small instances of transphobia and various other things, but there are things in her past that she has yet to uncover that may very well break her entire view of her family and quite possibly her entire life. She also knows there will be many instances of hard times in her future, but she has decided that there's no reason to worry about things that have yet to happen. She will face them head on whenever they may crop up.

The Mayfair Witches episode 8
I finally watched the season Finale of the Mayfair Witches.
As much as I loved what they were doing with the Talamasca, turning them into a semi-sinister supernatural variation of The men in Black is where they lost me. Since when does The Talamasca erase people’s memories?!
Why doesn’t AMC just give them Neurolizers and complete the MiB theme? Odd that a society so secretive that it would erase memories carries around business cards with their logo and phone number AND have giant sacks of salt with their logo on it. You can’t be a secret society and a brand name at the same time. Make up your mind.
I wonder if the SPR / ASPR is mildly insulted by this portrayal since The Talamasca is based on them.
Though I read The Witching Hour (back when I was fourteen and I’m forty-one now) I was still surprised at the reveal that Cortland orchestrated Deirdre’s death and was who really impregnated Deirdre to begin with. I thought the show was going to leave out the incest but I suppose in the post-Game of Thrones world TV has gotten less squeamish about such things.
The 1960s supernatural-themed Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows had incest but it was subtle and you had to pay attention to notice it. Such as with Laura Collins (the Phoenix) and when another Collins was being pressured to marry his cousin. I know that the child IS Lasher but Sip seemed a little too eager to want to want to hand over a baby to be poked and prodded by The Talamasca for the rest of his life, especially when he was just starting to see the sinister side of The Talamasca. Though The Witching Hour novel and existence of the speed-maturing Taltos existed since the 90s, was anyone else getting a Twilight Breaking Dawn feel from this? Including from Ciprian’s reaction to the baby?
Rowan’s chosen punishment for Cortland was harsh. I know he did many terrible things and was a manipulator and rapist-by-deception and hired someone to murder his own niece but the idea of being frozen in stone forever and still able to see and hear is pretty damn horrific. I’ve seen it in horror films before like in the Wishmaster franchise and TV shows like Warehouse 13 and Angel and it’s still horrific.
Honestly, every character was kind of unlikable in that last episode. Sip was clever with how he handled the situation with The Talamsca. HIs sister was an idiot. Paraphrasing: “Hello, powerful, illuminati-like secret society I am not supposed to know about, Is my brother there?” But what Sip wanted to do with the baby (even knowing it’s Lasher) is kind of terrible. I hope he had a scheme up his sleeve outside of “Hand the baby over to be vivisected.” It was also kind of cute seeing baby Lasher try to teethe on the Mayfair necklace.
The only character who didn’t say or do something terrible was Josephine. Go, Josephine, you go take over the Mayfair family. You’re the only sane one there. By the way, I want her actress (Jen Richards) to play Wanda in The Sandman Netflix series. She’d make a perfect Wanda.
The show is addictive but some of the characters have lost likability and I hope Cortland doesn’t really stay stuck as a statue forever. He’s fun.
