Johnny Guitar foi um filme de faroeste à frente do seu tempo. Lançado em 1954, o longa apresentava o embate entre Vienna e Emma Small, duas mulheres. O que era algo praticamente impensável nos anos 50, época em que a maioria absoluta dos filmes desse gênero eram protagonizados por homens. Por mais que o título do filme seja Johnny Guitar, o protagonismo de Vienna é indiscutível. Interpretada magistralmente por Joan Crawford, Vienna é a dona de um saloon que vê seus planos de construir uma cidade ao redor da ferrovia ameaçados pela perseguição do xerife e dos capangas da latifundiária Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge). Junte a isso um violeiro de passado misterioso, Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden), e um grupo de mineiros acusados de um crime, liderados pelo galanteador Dancin'Kid (Scott Brady), e terá uma trama intensa e de emoções grandiosas, que ainda se sobressaem mais de sessenta anos após sua estreia.
