This is the end of an Era!
I started out this year in an art rut and in a relationship.
I finished out with pressuring myself to finish a note book (which I did), and single!
Here's the last page of my art notebook.
Tumblr media
I will tag appropriately, of course. Only one of the characters are mine, (Kai, from The Stars have Fallen, my original book on Ao3 (atm, hopefully publishing in possibly 2024? Idk I need more money) under the username F3v3r), the rest are not mine.

Come to the Nightside! We have:
Ms. Fate, the drag queen super hero!
John Taylor, the poster boy for British edge lord Gaty Stus!
Susie Shooter, aka Shotgun Susie, aka "Oh God, it's her, run!"
Razor Eddie, Punk God of the Straight Razor, whose B.O. kills flies!
Dead Boy! (please don't ask for details)
Literal man-made horrors beyond your comprehension!
Arson! Just, like, a LOT of arson!
Not to mention the most exclusive clubs in the multiverse, any and every kind of sex with any and every kind of being (and inanimate object), a really rather distressing amount of murder, and more money than God!
(Brought to you by The Nightside Tourism Board. Good luck finding the place.)

Diminishing returns
The year was 2020, it was the first of January. That seasonal bite of winter was prowling on the air. the light on my desk flashed once and I buzzed my assistant to let the client through. The door opened and one hell of a dame walked in.
eyes red, and makeup smeared. I could smell the trouble and spilled white claw. As I stepped forward to shake her hand. but I didn't judge, no sir. it was a new year and a new me.I introduced myself. Names Marshall D. Lawson, friends call me Law. so Let’s Be friends miss?Maria Rose, she said. I could see the twinkle in her eye from the mention of my name. people always found it amusing. But then again so did Alföðr.

The Nightside by Simon R. Green
I blew through the rest of this series.  Short, enjoyable, easy reads.  Simon Green is full of very interesting ideas.  His implementation of those ideas however sometimes fails to measure up. I prefer Benedict Jacka, or Jim Butcher, but this series was without a doubt worth the read.

Books I’ve Read in 2022 - Part 3
21. Sole Survivor by Dean Koontz
Tumblr media
One of Koontz’s typical suspenseful thrillers, leads a broken down father on a hair raising adventure as he tries to figure out why a mysterious woman is taking photographs of his wife’s and daughters’ gravesite when they died in a deadly plan crash a year ago. His exploration of it, using his journalist background, leads him around the southwest, meeting others connected to the victims or the investigation of the crash and a secret government agency that has been tried to be covered up for a long time. Plus it tries to bring this man closure while he also realizes he’s been running for his life.
22. The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton
Tumblr media
A really beautiful and fascinating story about how one house and the unfortunate circumstances that happen in it in the 1800s leads to connections of people who visit and unknowingly become connected to each other. Following the perspectives of a woman trying desperately to connect to her dead mother right before her wedding, we see how her search of a house from her childhood stories unravels the mysteries of it including the background story of Birdie, the now resident ghost of the house. It was cool to see the different stories all throughout history and while the past is tragic, it is also comforting to see it from a ghost’s perspective.
23. The Bride Wore Black Leather by Simon R. Green (Novel #12 of the Nightside Series)
Tumblr media
And at long last, I’ve come to the end of the Nightside and the adventures of John Taylor. It was fun though and I very much enjoyed the series exploring the dark and haunted land underneath Proper London. The action in in the novel is great, especially as John Taylor feels suddenly alone like he did in the first novel, but I’ll admit, since this is the Nightside we’re talking about, I felt a little let down by the whole ‘Oh and all my friends were on my side the whole time, just lying to me, in order to stop the threat and save the Nightside’. Like it felt a little bit too happy. Still it was also fun to see it come full circle with Cathy being the one helping John throughout when he only came back to the Nightside on a case to save her.
24. Hollow Earth by John and Carole E. Barrowman
Tumblr media
What if your imagination could bring things to life? Well in this novel, two preteen twins learn that not only are they a part of a secret order of artists that can bring drawings to life, but that they are caught of in a mix of danger and scandal as their powers keep growing because their parents should have never had relations in the first place. The pacing is set right as the beginning as Matt and Emily Calder escape London with their mom and travel to a remote island in Scotland to meet their grandfather and better train their powers. But the threat is still there when their grandfather gets hurt and their mom disappears. While this book solved some problems it definitely sets up for a series, so I’ll be curious to see where it goes.
25. Days of Blood and Fire by Katherine Kerr (Book #7 of the Deverry Novels)
Tumblr media
Picking up right where the last novel left off, we get to see Jill in full sorceress mode as she works to protect the Dunn of the future mother to the unborn/reborn form of Evandar’s daughter, a danger made more real as her mysterious figure of a mother threatens the real world. I really enjoyed this novel, except for the constant need to have Rhodry constantly have sex and fall in love with every woman that he meets which is very annoying, but truthfully right when I was ready to keep going the book ended. I mean come on! We just met a dragon!
26. The Stationary Shop by Marjan Kamali
Tumblr media
This is such a touching novel even if it is so tragically heartbreaking. It tells the tale of Roya and Bahman as they fall in love as teenagers in Tehran right before the 1950s coup that overthrows the Prime Minister. Torn apart by a cruel and twisted plot that involves the backstory of Bahman’s mother and the owner of the stationery shop where the two meet, they go on to live different lives, married to other people, only to discover when its too late the truth about their past. Its hard, but loving and makes you appreciate the chances you should take to stay with the people you care about as well as understanding that influences outside your control lead your life in different directions, but not all bad ones.
27. The Dresden Files: Side Jobs by Jim Butcher
Tumblr media
A collection of side stories written in between the other Dresden Novels, you get to see not only more of our favorite characters in between the fallout of the other novels, but also get perspectives we never see in the books. One of those is Thomas as he works in the mysteries of Harry to protect and help vanquish a war that no one knows about. It was nice seeing not only how Thomas operates day to day, but also how much he cares for his brother. I also loved the last story through the eyes of Karrin Murphy. While I still don’t like the idea of her and Harry ending up together as the novels and other stories suggest they will, it was nice to see how much she could handle herself without Dresden. I also appreciated that Jim put in his very first small excerpt he wrote to pitch this series because its a reminder to all writers that we all start from somewhere and just because people say no at the time, doesn’t mean the idea is bad or that we can’t grow our skills.

I'm making a little filet thing for John and Eddie because the scene where John kills future Eddie is fucking relationship goals.
(BREAKDOWN AS TO WHY IT'S RELATIONSHIP GOALS:
Eddie is immortal, so, he basically cannot die, and because of that, he got turned into a fucking roach parasite host to have more roach babies and that happened for God damn 82 years.
It's goals because John immediately saw his bro suffering and said fuck it, I'm mercy killing him, there's no way I can stop this otherwise. And he had a full on breakdown over it for the next chapter and a half. Joanna noticed and hasn't known him for longer than like... a half day. She spoke up about it too. Like this stranger noticed how haunted and bad he felt for doing that.)
(Anyway the little ficlet.)
[John]
I went into Strangefellows. I needed a damn beer.
I had been forced into a timeslip, took a break, although not nearly long enough, because right after I was almost eaten alive by an alien. A woman I thought was human was really just part of the fucking alien. I liked her too, really.
I looked at Alex as I approached the bar, and without words, he set a full glass down. It was one of the cleanest ones, so he could tell that I wasn't really doing well at this point.
"Eddie is in the corner again, if you want to talk to him," He offered in a whisper.
God. Eddie.
That gaunt, horrified face came into mind's eye, and I almost cringed.
I felt so bad, still. Maybe I could tell Eddie. He was better with guilt than Suzie was.
So I found him, no drink on the table, this time. I set mine down, and he straightened up a little. He could tell, too.
"John, what happened to you?"
"...A lot," I sighed as I sat down. "More than I bargained for."
"So you came for a beer?"
"Yep. I sure did... You know you're... immortal, right...?" I whispered the last part, and he raised his brows in slight surprise, but, eventually nodded.
Could I even bring myself to say this to him?
"Well, I uh... I stumbled into a timeslip, 82 or so years in the future..."
"You of all people stumbled into a timeslip?"
"Yeah, well, it was a trap to kill me. No one else knew it was there... but, the point is, Eddie... I saw some... fucked up shit," I managed as I started to tear up again.
He gave me a soft look, glanced around at who was watching, before setting his jaw as he got up, and moved me over to wit next to me.
This was... new.
"What kind of stuff did you see, John?"
"The whole world was gone," I took a deep breath, "You were the last person left... and you were a... host for... creepy-crawlies. I couldn't... I couldn't stand to see you like that, Eddie... and I had to do something..." I trailed off, and he relaxed his jaw as he figured it out. He sighed, and swung an arm over my shoulders. I didn't care about the smell at this point.
"Well, John, the future is fickle. It'll change. I'm sure of it. That's not going to happen."
"I'll make damn sure of that, Eddie. I was the one that caused it. I... I don't know what I did, or, what I was going to do to cause that, other than what the future you told me. I went looking for my mother. You told me to never do it. I swear, Eddie, I will never look for her. I can't stand the thought of you ending up like that again..." And then I couldn't hold myself together anymore.
He held me as I tried to quietly hold back the tears and sobs, and he even comforted me in the most Eddie way. He sat there, not saying anything. It did help.
God, I could never let his reality become that. I would rather kill a thousand more Eddie's than to let him become like that.

Cathy: I'm gonna pass the phone to someone who sees colors other than black as communicable disease.
Alex: I'm passing the phone to someone who makes soap grow legs so it can run away.
Eddie: I'm passing the phone to someone who reads Pharmacy as "All-You-Can-Eat".
Dead Boy: I'm passing the phone to the only person to out-pink bubblegum.
Ms. Fate: I'm passing the phone to the only woman who makes guns reload by looking at them.
Suzie: I'm passing the phone to the man who lets me top.

the penultimate peril is my personal favorite out of all 13 asoue books not only just because i’m a sucker for all characters who’ve appeared in previous books showing up again in the last or second-to-last book (which i am, this is totally my jam i remember reading nightside and seeing all john taylor’s old friends and old enemies in the bride wore black leather and was v excited ... im a simple girl with simple needs) and not only because just i still think about sunny’s burn down hotel line a lot and love it immensely (which i do, elaborated here), and not only just because the interesting differences between snickets vs denouements (on the same side but all haven’t seen each other in years, which taking into account j&k were in the same city during that time frame was very intriguing, versus not all on the same side but probably see each other every day), or just because as a child that court scene seemed so hopeful at one moment and turned so dreadfully wrong the next
rereading the books years later another thing aside the above that i (a sugar bowl generation enthusiast and also someone who loves b&b) love is that the reminiscing / mentions of b&b are both very A+++ in quality and quantity, out of all 13 books. there were moments of the baudelaires thinking about their parents and remembering them and there were moments of other sugar bowl generation characters talking about them. we got stories about them together and also separately with other people. we got the bertrand teaching the children elevator prank and beatrice objecting to it then giving in, beatrice doing magic tricks with dinner rolls, the elephant poem which bertrand would recite to the children, dewey mentioning how he and bertrand recognize on another in disguises using poems, kit mentioning passing the darts to beatrice and also beatrice wearing a red shawl, kit mentioning “your father wore the same frown” though this was, possibly, not about bertrand, beatrice keeping that poster of la forza del destino and telling the children it’s the most interesting time she’d ever had at opera, b&b playing blackgammon with their children, beatrice tickling bertrand, beatrice telling olaf “you’ll fail”, beatrice and olaf knowing each other at least as early as they were 7 year old, beatrice pregnant with sunny and spending her free time lounging on the largest sofa in library while bertrand fetched lemonade and toast and adjusted the pillows beneath her!!!  so many things!!!! i love them all!!!!  i love tpp and i love b&b!!
(p.s.: i have to. stop myself from launching another whole lengthy paragraph about eleanora poe being the one in the elevator during the prank and about certain employees of hers she fired and how this was connected)
(p.s.2: we can also indirectly infer about kit and bertrand’s friendship from a lot of things mentioned above, like while she might’ve never directly, specifically, unambiguously talked about him, they were both part of the la forza del destino operation too and the fact that bertrand was clearly good friends with dewey possibly made them both the very few people who knew of dewey’s existence, i said possibly because a lot of things were unknown here and the timeline’s fuzzy, but anyway since i love this pair of friendship a lot i’m going to interpret it the way i want)
(p.s.3: red shawl with long feathers along the edges!!!!!)
(p.s.4: while i do have my very own not safe for work galaxy brain take on dewey talking about that poem but even without that it’s very interesting itself, and he talking about bertrand twice is very important to me like everyone else always talked about beatrice, which i love obviously i love people talking about beatrice!!  but unlike everyone else he talked about bertrand instead which i find really fun)

My books came today. After reading "The Difference a Day Makes" in Mean Streets (which I bought just because it had a short story from The Dresden Files in it) I decided I needed more of John Taylor in my life.

I am the same age John Taylor is in Something from the Nightside
I've been reading these books since I was at least half this age, maybe even younger.
This feels weird, like when you realize just how young YA protagonists are and yet you felt a kinship to them and believed they could Change the World?
Only now I realize that it's not just that Taylor's a very careful Gary Stu type fuck-up
(you know, where he tells you how fucked up he is and how you shouldn't be around him because he's a Bad and Dangerous Guy, only he helps everyone and solves every problem and always has the witty line and can stare someone down till they bleed from the eyes but also every woman he beds wants to kill him bc dames eh?)
He's just thirty and Seen Some Shit
Cheers to making it to thirty amidst several apocalypse scenarios, bro. Let's drink to that.
