Nerdery
Here is something the first episode of Inspector Morse (1987) and the first episode of the magnificent BBC radio series of The Lord of the Rings (1981) have in common:-
Philip Voss (the Coroner / the Lord of the Nazgul[1]) asks searching questions of Peter Woodthorpe (Max DeBryn[2] / Gollum).
I have to wonder whether the parallel occurred to either or both of them during the filming of Morse. ;-)
Incidentally, because this delights me, here's a full list (so far! I may have missed some!) of actors who were in both the LotR radio series and the morseverse:-
James Grout (DCS Strange in Inspector Morse / Butterbur)
Michael Horden - (Dr Starkie in Inspector Morse ("Service for all the Dead") / Gandalf)
John McAndrew (Leslie Garnier in Endeavour ("Cartouche") / Pippin)
Robert Stephens (Sir Wilfred Mulryne in Inspector Morse ("The Setting of the Sun" / Aragorn)
Philip Voss (the Coroner in Inspector Morse / the Lord of the Nazgul)
Peter Woodthorpe (Max DeBryn / Gollum)
That all makes me so happy. :D
ALSO
a) James Bradshaw's played Bilbo Baggins in a stage production of The Hobbit so Max really is the hobbit pathologist (Bilbo!Max and Gollum!Max ;-) )
b) the composer of the LotR radio series was the late, great Stephen Oliver who (was the wonderful comedian John Oliver's uncle and also) wrote the music for the RSC musical of Nicholas Nickleby that was rather a hit in the 1970s. It was the success of that musical that was a huge part of why Trevor Nunn and the RSC in general were willing to take a risk on a musical of rather a long book by Victor Hugo in the 1980s... So, there's a Roger Allam connection too. ;-)
[1] Aka the Witch-King of Angmar, but he's called the LotN in the radio series cast list (and it makes sense for him as a title for nerdy reasons I won't go into ;-) ).
[2] "DeBryn" was created as Max's surname for Endeavour so strictly speaking that's inaccurate but.

Part 6: Sources, references, and further reading
(There are links under all the pictures in this post)
1: Concept art posted by Nick Arnett on Instagram
"Here is some more concept art I got to be in, that never made it." https://www.instagram.com/p/BvwpicenXHg/
And many thanks to @minilev for originally sharing the picture on Tumblr here!
2: “Last-Supper-like” images
The first picture was used to promote the game, for example during E3 2017 where it was on display outside the Los Angeles Convention Center (it briefly appears in this video).

"KIDNAPPING TWAIN APPEAR FOR HEARING," North Bay Nugget. April 23, 1934. Page 3. --- Committed for Trial; Evidence of Victim and Police Presented ---- NOT GUILTY PLEAS --- Nabbed Wrong Man, Geroux Said in Telling Court of Incident ---- Charged with kidnapping and robbing with violence Emile "Musty" Geroux, North Bay taxi driver, April 13. Joseph A. Feeney, Detroit, and Nelse Paananen, Sudbury, were committed for trial by Magistrate Weegar following a preliminary hearing Saturday morning.
Neither was called to give evidence by their counsel, P. J. McAndrews, Sudbury. Testimony was taken from Geroux and Deputy Chief J. J. Dennis. Nonchalantly, Feeney and Paananen elected preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Geroux Tells Story Claiming that he was beaten and whisked away in his own car by Feeney and Paananen early in the morning of April 13. Geroux told practically the same story in the box as he did following his escape. Though Chief Constable Clark has refused to divulge the men's records, he did say both have served prison. terms.
With only the evidence of Geroux. and Deputy-Chief Dennis being heard, the police court hearing lasted but 55 minutes, Spectators were disappointed in that the expected fireworks did not materialize.
Magistrate Weegar directed commitment a few minutes after Crown Attorney T. E. McKee made a request on the evidence presented. Emile Geroux was the first witness called.
"What is your business?" Crown Attorney McKee asked.
"I am a driver for the Diamond Taxi," Peroux replied.
"What was said over the phone when you were called on the night in question?"
"A car was wanted at the Continental Hotel."
"What did you find?"
"I saw two men on the other side of the street."
"Well, what happened?"
"Feeney told me to go to 20 Morris street," Geroux went on. "When we arrived at the only house on the street, Feeney got out of the car but the other fellow turned off the light and grabbed me by the neck. He put his fingers in my mouth, but I bit them and got clear. Then we started to fight."
"Did each of these fellows take part in the assault?"
"Yes, Paananen held me and Feeney poked me."
"Well?"
"I was thrown in the back seat by Paananen and with Feeney at the wheel we drove over the T. and N. O. tracks down McIntyre street to John street and out by the Callander road."
"What happened then?"
"On the way to Callander they took my tie and tied my hands. They also took my money and driver's license. Paananen held me on the floor with his foot on my neck."
"Go on."
Untie His Hands "On the other side of Callander they untied my hands and let me sit on the back seat. At South River we got gas but Feeney made me walk up the road."
"What was the next step in the proceedings?"
"We got gas again at Sundridge but they told me I could stay in the car if I remained quiet."
"What was done next?"
"About a quarter past eight we took the ditch on the other side of Bracebridge. Feeney went to get a team of horses and while he was gone I hit Paananen and ran to a farm house. The farmer phoned the provincial constable at Bracebridge who arrived in plain clothes and arrested the men."
"Did they carry a gun?" Mr. MoKee asked later. "I don't know. They passed something between themselves but I don't know if it was a gun or not."
"How old are you?" Mr. McAndrews questioned when the witness was turned over to him.
"Twenty-three years." "How long have you driven car?"
"About six years."
"Were you ever away?"
"Yes, I worked at Sudbury in the Nickel Range Hotel."
"Were you ever arrested?" "Yes." "You were sent to Burwash for six months were you not?" "Yea."
"How were these men sitting when you stopped on Morris street?"
"They were both in the back seat."
Mr. McAndrews then made Geroux tell the story again of the alleged assault.
"Was there any talk during the trip?"
Wrong Guy "They fold me I was the guy they wanted, but after we passed Powassan they said I was the wrong fellow and that they were sorry." "Why didn't you yell when you stopped for gas at Sundridge?"
"I was afraid to yell."
Deputy Chief J. J. Dennis was the next witness called.
"What was the first notice you had of this affair?" Mr. McKee asked.
"Chief Clark received a call from Bracebridge about a quarter to nine Friday morning."
"What did you do?"
"A warrant was issued and I left for Bracebridge in the morning."
The officer told of locating Geroux at the hotel in Bracebridge and described his Injuries.
Feeney and Paananen were handed over to him by Provincial Constable Harwizlt of Bracebridge.

Coronation Medals: Recognition for Our Frontline Heroes
Tumblr media
  - Culture Secretary unveils design of Medal to mark Coronation of Their Majesties The King and Queen Consort - Medal will be given to Armed Forces, frontline emergency service workers and those taking part in the Coronation - Medals, made of nickel silver and plated in nickel, feature image of The King and Queen Camilla The Medal acts as a thank you gift from the nation to commemorate the Coronation for the people who will make the historic service happen. Everyone actively contributing and supporting the Coronation on 6 May - including choristers, police officers, military personnel and St John Ambulance personnel - as well as those directly involved in the delivery of the Coronation are eligible. It will also be given to serving frontline members of the police, fire, emergency services, prison services and armed forces that have completed five full calendar years of service. It is expected that more than 400,000 Coronation Medals will be issued. The design features a double portrait of Their Majesties on the front and a version of the Royal Cypher, a laurel wreath and the date of the Coronation on the reverse. The ribbon is made up of red, blue and white vertical stripes - the colours of the Union Flag and are made of nickel silver and plated in nickel.
Tumblr media
Official portrait of Lucy Frazer, UK Culture Secretary. Photo by Chris McAndrew. Wikimedia.   Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: The Coronation Medal will act as a reminder of the important part each person has played in this moment of history. From our Armed Forces who protect our country to the emergency services who care for us at home, alongside those volunteers who are giving up their time to make this event so special. I am delighted that we can mark their contribution to this special day, and for each and every day that they go above and beyond serving their country.   Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden said: The Coronation would not be possible without the dedication and selfless service shown by our armed forces and other public servants. This Medal is a fitting recognition of their efforts, and a thank you from the nation. It will be worn with pride for years to come.   Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: This Medal is a symbol of the critical role our emergency services will play in this potentially once in a lifetime opportunity to honour our new King. However, it rightly also goes further and recognises not just those who are helping at the Coronation, but the heroes across our emergency services, such as the police, fire and rescue services, that go to work every day to protect and support us all.
Tumblr media
Official portrait of UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. Photo by Richard Townshend. Wikimedia.   Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: Our Armed Forces and the Monarch have a unique bond. Our histories and customs mirror the reigns of Kings and Queens. Our deployments are in their names and our allegiance is sworn by each and every one of us. The Coronation Medal will celebrate that bond and allow huge numbers of service personnel to reaffirm that linkage as King Charles is crowned our new Monarch.   The double portrait of The King and Queen Consort on the front of the newly unveiled Coronation Medal was designed by Martin Jennings who also designed the official effigy of The King for the new coins issued by the Royal Mint. The Medal is made by Worcestershire Medal Service Ltd in Birmingham.   Those who will receive the Medal for the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and Queen Consort are: - Individuals who have actively contributed to the official Coronation events in Westminster Abbey and processions, and other officially recognised ceremonial Coronation events; - Serving members of the Armed Forces who have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023 or participate in Armed Forces Coronation events during the course of 2023; - Frontline emergency personnel who have been in paid service, retained or in a voluntary capacity, dealing with emergencies as part of their conditions of service, and completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023; - Prison services personnel who are publicly employed and who have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023; - Living individual recipients of the George Cross or of the Victoria Cross.   The tradition of Coronation Medals dates to the reign of King James I when the first Medal was awarded in 1603. This Medal featured a bust of James I wearing the costume of a Roman Emperor. Its reverse included a crowned lion rampant holding a beacon and a wheat sheaf.   Sources: THX News & Department for Culture Media and Sport. Read the full article

UK Space Assumes Command of Worldwide Disaster Monitoring
Tumblr media
The UK Space Agency is taking over the leadership of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters (The Charter), which provides data from satellites to aid disaster response around the world. The UK Space Agency’s six-month leadership will begin with the 49th Board Meeting of the Charter in Edinburgh this week (24 – 28 April 2023), attended by space agencies and organisations from across the globe. The Charter has 17 members and 270 contributing satellites, supporting people in need in 131 countries.  This mobilises space agencies and satellite operators across the globe and benefits from their knowledge and satellites through a single access point which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and at no cost to the user.
Tumblr media
Dr Paul Bate. CEO of the UK Space Agency. UK.GOV.   Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: All too often we hear reports of the devastating and far-reaching consequences of natural disasters on communities across the globe. Satellites play an important role in the response, with Earth observation data used worldwide to map, monitor and mitigate impacts and, ultimately, to save lives. That is why the UK is a proud member of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters, which has been activated more than 800 times since November 2000. As we assume the leadership of the Charter we look forward to working with our fellow members to drive forward this vital humanitarian service.   Since it launched, the Charter has been activated over 815 times to date for natural and man-made disasters such as cyclones, floods, landslides, earthquakes and oil spills.
Tumblr media
Official portrait of John Lamont, Minister for Scotland. Photo by Chris McAndrew. Wikimedia.   UK Government minister for Scotland, John Lamont, said: I would like to welcome the members of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters to Edinburgh as the UK begins our six-month leadership. The Charter is a fantastic example of how the international community can work together to help with natural disasters around the world. Here in Scotland, we have seen the benefits of this group with the satellite imagery of the flooding in Aberdeenshire last year which helped local agencies deal with the issue.   Weather-related disasters are the most common cause for a Charter activation. On average, the Charter is activated 42 times per year, although since 2020 this has risen to an annual average of 50. This included an activation for flooding in Scotland in November 2022.
What is the Charter?
Formed on 20 October 2000 by the European Space Agency (ESA), French Space Agency (CNES) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), with the UK joining in 2005, the Charter is a worldwide collaboration, making satellite data available to help with disaster management. It helps us respond to major natural and human-made disasters, with the aim of saving lives and livelihoods. Information and maps derived from satellite data sourced via the Charter assists the coordination of resources and expertise for rapid response in major disaster situations, helping civil protection authorities and the international humanitarian community. The Charter can be activated by authorised users from over 80 countries and the UN, as a cooperating body. All countries can ask an authorised country to activate the Charter on their behalf, meaning the Charter can be used by any country in need, anywhere in the world. Any country can also apply to become an Authorised User under the Charter’s universal access initiative.
Tumblr media

What happens when disaster strikes?
When a disaster strikes, an Authorised User (AU) activates the Charter, kick-starting an international effort. In some cases, co-operating bodies and organisations may request further data. Next, an On-Duty Operator, who is available 24 hours a day, verifies the activation and forwards it to an Emergency On-Call Officer (ECO). The ECO then prepares by identifying available satellites and which of those would be the best ones to use based on the disaster type and circumstances. This plan is submitted to the relevant satellite operators, who task their satellites accordingly. Then, a Project Manager (PM), an expert in data handling, is assigned by the Executive Secretariat to assist the AU. The PM coordinates the delivery of maps from the Value-Added Providers - they take the data provided by member agencies and interpret this, assessing what they see from the satellites; for example, in a flood they can monitor and track the change in flood extent and water levels. These maps are then given to the end-user to plan their disaster management and relief efforts.
The Charter and the UK
Since 2005 the UK has contributed satellite imagery and operations to the Charter through the DMC Constellation and high-resolution Vision-1 satellites, operated by Airbus Defence and Space Limited. The UK team at Airbus performs Emergency on-Call Officer duties and jumps into action to task these UK missions and provide disaster response imagery whenever required. The UK has activated the Charter on multiple occasions, the last time as recent as November 2022 for flooding in Scotland, with torrential rail causing roads and rail travel to be impacted, with school closures and power cuts affecting areas in Aberdeenshire. The satellite imagery of the area provided by the Canadian Space Agency’s RADARSAT RCM assisted the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in determining flood extent and the height of the water levels over large areas, resulting in the issuing of relevant warnings as well as planning and preparation for any rescues. The Charter is an invaluable international tool that frequently provides lifesaving information and data. So spread the word and be assured that, when the next disaster hits, there are globally connected teams working together and using satellites to save lives.   Sources: THX News & UK Space Agency. Further observations on “Endeavour” (while I’m watching season 5):-
- did anyone give Shaun Evans permission to be that beautiful and to make me ache for Morse even when he’s being a prize git?
- did anyone give Roger Allam permission to be that awesome and glorious?
- okay *now* I’m beginning to see the Morse/Max thing. :-)
- nice that the Whump The Morse game continues, even if less than in earlier seasons. Russell Lewis is blatantly a whump and a hurt/comfort fan and I respect this about him so very much. More comfort needed to balance things pls though. (NB: I do know we probably won’t get it...)
- IT’S JOHN MCANDREW PLAYING THE CINEMA ORGANIST HI JOHN MCANDREW so for those who don’t know he played Pippin in the utterly superb 1981 radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and his voice does not appear to have markedly aged in the decades since. :-) Also he played Claudio to Roger Allam’s Benedick at the RSC in the 1990-91 production of Much Ado About Nothing with Susan Fleetwood as Beatrice and ALEX FUCKING KINGSTON as Hero and I so wish I’d seen that. (https://www.photostage.co.uk/shakespeare/much-ado-about-nothing/1990-1991-rsc.html More about it here.)
- Oh No I know what’s coming for Fred and Win and I wish it wasn’t. :-( Must read/reread more Thursdays Being Happy And Adopting Morse fics.

this is the first track on their playlist and for a GOOD reason. the lyrics in this just work so well. ludwig’s score & the strings in the background also sell that old & new / past & present vibe that kanan and hera both have.
love, let’s talk about love / is it anything and everything you hoped for? / or do the feeling haunt you? / i know the feeling haunt you
+ what goes together better than loving & haunting & kanera? the answer is nothing. they perfected it.
2. IT GETS BETTER by REX ORANGE COUNTY
this one of my favourite lovey dovey songs because it’s written so personally?? it’s talking about a real love & one that makes you in the process a better person and i don’t really think that could fit them any better. kanan just loves her, okay?
she changed the world, i know / and it’s better for it / four years later, and look where we really are / look how far we’ve come / look at us now
+ special points bc it mentions flying too (we’re flying i finally know / I’m here for a reason) & like????
3. LETS GET MARRIED by BLEACHERS
legally i had to put this song bc they’re space married. it’s just so happy???? and honestly, that’s what they deserve and i refuse to believe anything else. i am still on the first stage of grief.
cause we don’t wanna walk alone / or run away / change me at all costs / starlight and star-crossed / take me so breathless / we could be reckless
+ also the line it’s hard enough to love me???? that’s them. no further explanation needed your honour.
4. ¡QUE BONITO! by ROSARIO
so this song is very near & dear to me because latino kanera rights. also the lyrics just about undo me. this is the english translation but the song is in espanõl tho.
that my body doesn't stop noticing / that your soul is always with me / and that, from me, it will never depart
+ it also mentions flying too (how beautiful it would be to be able to fly / and next to you) like hello pilot and her co-pilot who’d follow her anywhere !!!!!!!!
5. COOL ON FIRE by DANIEL JOHNS
this one very much gives me the vibes about them being separated for most of the time from the end of s2 and throughout a lot of s3. like being so in love and having to like. put it to the side out of duty both to kanan’s teachings and hera’s duty to the rebellion.
i get higher / you keep getting better and i’m trying / but i can’t see nothing else / cause together, nothing matters / we’re on fire / cool on fire
+ we love fire symbolism & hera as the cool & kanan as the fire is uh. que rico.
6. IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT by MICHAEL CRAWFORD & MARIANNE MCANDREW
i like to think about this song as like, right after their first kiss maybe or just like reminiscing about it. idk. it just fits. trust me. i had to put one overly romantic musical theatre song on here so uh. here it is.
and that is all that loves about / and we’ll recall when time runs out / that it only took a moment / to be loved / a whole lifelong
+ to think, it is a love that went beyond one lifetime. i am going to breakdown and cry now.
7. THE MOMENT I SAID IT by IMOGEN HEAP
so, it’s them so i had to add one sad song. this is very much the j*di n*ght song. like kanan KNEW. he KNEW what was going to happen and i personally think hera will think about that for as long as she lives, even when it’s all been forgiven and accepted.
but darling, you’re not thinking straight / suddenly things just happened, we can’t explain / it’s not even light out / but you’ve got somewhere to be / no hesitation, no / i’ve never seen you like this
+ thank u imogen heap for understanding emotions and making it into music so brilliantly. i am hurting.
seven songs for their little crew of seven. hope u like them and my past midnight absolute wild explanations <3

It’s not everyday that an anthropologist is featured in the New Yorker, but the 12 June 2021 edition of that mag has a long feature on Heidi Larson, who studies the cultural dimensions of vaccine rumors
Tumblr media
Larson has a Ph.D. from Berkeley, where she studied with Gerald Berreman, John Gumperz, and Alan Dundes. I have not read a single word of her work but with that sort of genealogy it looks like she is taking the folklore/oral literature/linguistic anthropology lens (Gumperz, Dundes) and applying it to a topic of political economic importance (Berreman). Sounds fascinating and important!
