Song Review: John Mayer Trio - “They Love Each Other” (Live, Sept. 23, 2023)
He may have left Dead & Company, but John Mayer hasn’t left the Grateful Dead songbook behind.
Appearing at the Crossroads Guitar Festival with his eponymous trio, Mayer on Sept. 23 performed “They Love Each Other” in his own style.
With drummer Steve Jordon providing the glue and bassist Pino Palladino playing co-leads with Mayer’s guitar, the former Company man easily shifted the Dead song to his live repertoire.
The problem, as always, is Mayer’s vocal delivery, which veers from over-pronounced whining to off-key high notes. Dude sings as poorly as he plays magnificently. And his singing detracts mightily from his playing.
Grade card: John Mayer Trio - “They Love Each Other” (Live - 9/23/23) - B-

All In 2018
So, with Max airing the early years of AEW, now is the perfect time to start a re-watch of AEW. First though, a quick switch to ROH Honor Club to watch the 2018 All In – the beginning of All Elite Wrestling.
All In (2018)
Organizations Involved: Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling, NWA, TNA (Impact), MLW, AAA
Ring Announcers: Justin Roberts, Bobby Cruise
Backstage Interviewer: Sean Mooney
Commentators: Excalibur, Don Callis, Ian Riccaboni
Here we go…
MJF vs Matt Cross. A fine opening match. It’s weird seeing MJF eat the pin considering how big a star he would become in AEW.
Sean Mooney interviews Nick Aldis.
Christopher Daniel (accompanied by SCU teammates Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky) vs Steve Amell (accompanied by Josh Segarra). Jerry Lynn is the special guest referee. John Mayer is at ringside. Is John Mayer a wrestling fan? Good match considering one of the participants is a non-wrestler. I respect Steve’s love of wrestling.
Tenille Dashwood and Mandy Leon join the commentary booth for the next match, a 4-way involving Chelsea Green, Britt Baker, Madison Rayne, and Tessa Blanchard.
Tully Blanchard and Magnum TA are ringside.
Impact provided ¾ of the talent for this match.
Chelsea is introduced as the “Hot Mess”, and yep, that would be an accurate description.
Tessa is the first person to appear on the card who sunk their career due to their own actions. Don’t worry, she’ll have company as the night progresses.
Great match that the crowd popped for. Chelsea was a blast to watch. Tessa has talent and if she wasn’t such an egotistical, racist bully she would have progressed much farther in her career.
Nick Aldis vs Cody Rhodes for the NWA World championship. Brett Tarring joins the commentary team for the match. Earl Hepbner
Cody is accompanied by Brandi, Phaoroah, Diamond Dallas Page, Tommy Dreamer, and Glacier.
Brandi was styling this night.
Earl Hebner is the referee.
Nick Aldis is accompanied by Jeff Jarrett, Tim Storm, and Sean Davari.
Cody’s team (minus Brandi) came out in track suits. Nick’s team came out in actual business suits. In the war of style, Nick’s team won.
DDP gets the old-timer pop when he diamond cuts Davari.
Brandi shields Cody’s unconscious body and receives a top rope elbow drop from Aldis for her troubles.
Match was okay. I’m not a big Cody fan. Highlights were DDP and Brandi.
Joey Janella with Penelope Ford vs Hangman Adam Page.
The commentators mention that Page admitted to killing Joey Ryan in the press conference but I’m “Team Hangman Did Nothing Wrong” so I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.
The middle of the match turns into Hangman vs Penelope. My favorite part of the match – Penelope was awesome, and Hangman sold for her big time.
Janela eats a wicked powerbomb off the ramp through a table. Ouch!
People scold Hangman for the arson of Swerve’s house but the commentators consistently throughout the match remark on Hangman’s murder of Joey Ryan.
I think we need to realize that Adam has always been unbalanced.
Joey Ryan’s part in All In – returning from “death”, accompanied by penis druids, has been removed from the pay per view broadcast. Fine with me. I never liked Joey Ryan’s gimmick and that was before the Speaking Out allegations.
Joey Ryan and Flip Gordon join Tessa in the “Idiots Who Sunk Their Own Career” club.
Jay “Black Machismo” Lethal, accompanied by Lanny Poffo vs Flip Gordon, accompanied by Brandi Rhodes for the Ring of Honor World Championship. Ring of Honor ambassador Cary Silkin presents the title.
Jay’s in full-on Randy mode and keeps interacting with Brandi like she’s Miss Elizabeth.
All In was about the future of wrestling but I love the nods to the past: Sean Mooney, Earl Hebner, Cody and Nick’s support team, Lanny Poffo, Cary Silkin, Jay’s Black Machismo gimmick. Little touches that homage the past but not at the cost of the present-day talent.
Bully Ray attacks both Flip, Lethal, and Lanny. Colt Cabana makes the rescue, and the trio put Bully through a table. Fun match.
Penta El Zero vs Kenny Omega in their first singles match. Great match, as always when these two meet in the ring.
The arena goes dark…the lights come back up…Penta rises from the mat but it’s clearly a different Penta – he attacks Omega and reveals himself to be Chris Jericho!
This is before everyone was tired of Jericho (and his politics) so his surprise appearance drew a big pop!
Okada vs Marty Scurll is up next. Scurll is another member of “I sunk my own career” club. Tiger Hattori is the ref for the match. We have a BTE skit with Marty and the finger-pointing critics – if you watched BTE at the time, they were the “Now, Arthur” guys.
I had forgotten that Okada was in his red-haired breakdown era until he made his appearance.
Okada wins, as he should.
The Young Bucks & Kota Ibushi vs Bandidn, Rey Fenix, and Rey Mysterio.
Rey is cosplaying as Wolverine tonight.
I can hear the Young Bucks’ critics from my house: This is nothing but a high spot-fest!” And it is but that is what I want from the wrestlers involved in this match. If a match has the Young Bucks, Kota, Fenix, Rey, and Bandido in it and I am not seeing a rapid pace with amazing high spots, I would be extremely disappointed.
Kota and the Buck win in a great match.
Ranking the matches in order of my own personal enjoyment:
Chelsea Green vs Madison Rayne Vs Britt Baker vs Tessa Blanchard
Jay Lethal vs Flip Gordon
Adam Page vs Joey Janella
Kenny Omega vs Penta El Zero
Kota Ibushi & The Young Bucks vs Rey Mysterio, Bandido, and Fenix
Kazuchika Okada vs Marty Scurll
Cody Rhodes vs Nick Aldis
Christopher Daniels vs Steve Amell
MJF vs Matt Cross

I totally get what you’re saying about H&L compartmentalizing and how we as fans maybe need to compartmentalize as well… it’s just so hard sometimes. When someone’s music/lyrics have such an impact… when you feel thankful to have their music in your life… to exist at the same time as them.
Back in the day, I was a HUGE John Mayer fan. His music got me through being newly married, a young parent, losing my mother… it’s hard to put it all into words. But then his public persona blew up in the worst way. I haven’t been able to listen to any of his music since Continuum and John Mayer Trio. It all became so disingenuous… at least to me. It felt like a real loss.
I really don’t want that to happen with H&L.
I absolutely 100% get you. It’s hard to know how to proceed because on one hand, being here makes everything ten times worse because the discourse is endless and when things are tense I’m just bombarded with hot takes and harassment and complaining. But being here is also what allows me to see past their awful public personas. So… I really don’t know. 🫤

i barely go here, but: daughters by john mayer trio is such a tallulah song
like
fathers, be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers, who turn into mothers
so mothers, be good to your daughters too
and

I'm going to play devil's advocate (and go delulu) for a moment here: I think Taylor's going to be single for a while now. Why? You're On Your Own, Kid. I've always read tracks 5's as the point of the album. Some examples (im trying to keep it brief and I apologize for spelling mistakes and auto-corrects, it's 1 AM where I'm at):
All Too Well from Red, an album about how complicated emotions can be, has arguably her most "emotional rollercoaster" of a song as track 5.
Dear John from Speak Now, an album loosely based on the concept of "things she should have told people, but never did." has a song directly addressed to Mayer as track 5.
tolerate it from evermore, which I always read as an album about moving on from the past, has a song that discusses a failing relationship (which is heavily implied to have been a marriage or just really long) which, at the end, Taylor is implied to be leaving due to how unfulfilling it is, even if it was once great *coughs in Joe Alwyn* as track 5.
my tears ricochet from folklore, which I always read as an album about directly addressing the hurt the past caused, but not healing from it, has a song that discusses the pain of losing a partner, but explicitly not moving on, as the man still wears the jewels, missing her, while also tossing out blame *cough in Hiddleston/Harris affair and Harry Styles (my favorite duo (Hiddle)/trio (Calcium being an intrusion to all that is good))* and Taylor still speaks to him, while screaming at the sky, and feels she can go anywhere, just not home (which I see as symbolism for love in all TS songs) as the track 5.
Delicate from reputation, which discusses forbidden romance, has the most obvious example of portraying the theme, while also subtly hinting at the relationship being over already in the bridge and her only reminiscing and hoping to be remembered *cough in rep is about Hiddleston delusion*, as the track 5 (yes, I'm the Hiddleswift truther from earlier, hello).
These are the most obvious ones, to me at least.
You're On Your Own, Kid is a funny song in all possible readings of Midnights. I take the album as the third part of the reminiscence trilogy, as I've dubbed it. folklore is about addressing the past, evermore about moving on from it, and Midnights about learning from it. I take each song as her comparing a past situation to her circumstances with Alwyn (YOYOK past situation is obvious so I won't talk about that).
She starts with summer went away, I've always taken summer as symbolic of Hiddleston, but her yearning for love remained, and she tried to play it off as if it's cool, even if it wasn't, because if she did, that relationship would blow up in both their faces, with people already thinking it was PR and Kanye being a clown.
Alternatively, it could be refrencing the end of the honeymoon phase with Alwyn.
She then waits patiently, wanting to be noticed by a friend she likes (Alwyn), whom she potentially chased just because she misses the summer. The anyway is to me, a timeskip, of sorts. He's distant now, smoking with his boys, likely without telling Taylor about it, given that she heard it in his voice (disappearing at random for reasons she's not sure about; I swear I saw paparazzi pics of him kissing Laird in 2022, but I can't provide links, I just know I freaked out) and she touches her phone like it's his face, maybe because they don't talk much anymore and there's distance. In regard to the town line, it might be about how she's grown more closed off since Alwyn. She didn't chose this, she wants to be more open, but she'd stay like this for him. Forever, if need be.
She thought she waited years to meet him, that he's the one, only to learn he never cared and there were better options. All this time she was on her own, and didn't even realize.
She then decides she'll run away because she knows he doesn't love her. The Daisy May part is interesting because that's a nice, obedient woman. Joe Alwyn? Controlling? I wouldn't be shocked.
Now, she takes a taxi to take her there. When else has she used the word taxi? Come Back...Be Here and New Year's Day, ladies and gentlemen, certified Haylor songs. She also mentions dreams not being rare, which Wildest Dreams, ladies and gentlemen, certified Haylor song. It also repeats the better bodies part, meaning Harry was, in her eyes, the better option at that point. I think, Harry and Taylor were communicating throughout COVID after the first Grammy meeting and Harry knew Taylor was having doubts about Joe, que Boyfriends and Matlida, and he may have helped her mourn the relationship before it was over. During their midnight talking chats, he finally told her he still thinks of her, and she acknowledges it here, saying he wasn't alone in that.
She then proclaims how much she's given for a perfect kiss, but it solved nothing, because Joe wasn't perfect and how her friends (also the world and the fans) won't know what to say when she tells them. How the jokes weren't funny (the ones about her being everything and him being just Ken), which she's probably from his perspective, but sarcastically, because it was true, and how she took all the money with her, because he has very little in comparison. Her gown is bloody now, because she just destroyed her chances of ever marrying Joe, whom she wanted that with. But this was a step forward and she shouldn't be afraid. And he can't take away her future experiences. He can talk shit all he wants, it won't change that this is good for her.
So she'll make some frienship braclets and just exist for a little. And she can do that. She's on her own. She has been for a very long time.
- Faithfully, a delulu Alwyn not-enjoyer
I think you’re right about TS & HS communicating right before Covid. I have a theory on this. Both their albums had just come out Lover & Fine Line ( on TS birthday). And there are several things I put together from articles & interviews. I might make a post about it. Covid hits & TS goes off & right folklore & evermore ( with lots of Haylor songs) and HS writes HH (which to me every song is about TS). Satellite he says “I can see you’re lonely down there” so yea Harry knew there were problems with them.
And I never thought about Delicate being about TH. Makes a lot more sense than joe. That timeline is all kind of whack. It doesn’t make sense to me. She meets joe April 29th & is just blown away by him & so into him then a week later she’s being all flirty with TH at the Met & completely ignores joe & gets with TH?
I think she’s probably gonna be single at least till the end of tour maybe. She’s super busy at the moment.

Ultimate Playlist: Men’s Names, John
If you have guessed that “John” is the most popular man’s name in song, well, you’re close. Here are twelve songs about John.
Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean I don’t usually include country songs, but this one skyrocketed to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. It won a Grammy for Best Country & Western Recording the next year.
Uncle John’s Band by Grateful Dead The lyrics of this song reference several folk and bluegrass tunes that the band members liked. It became their first chart hit, reaching 69, and is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.”
Dear John by Taylor Swift Taylor wrote this song about her short-lived relationship with the singer-songwriter John Mayer. She utilized guitar slurring in the instrumentals, a technique favored by Mayer.
Sit Down, John by Sherman Edwards From the musical 1776 about the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this song finds John Adams frustrated due to Congress refusing to debate his proposals on independence, let alone consider them. The other delegates implore John to sit down.
The Adams Administration by Lin Manuel Miranda In the more recent musical to feature John Adams, Hamilton is fired by Adams and publishes an inflammatory critique of the new president. Hamilton’s words reference the aforementioned 1776 song: “Sit down, John, you fat mother–[BLEEP]."
But, Mr. Adams by Sherman Edwards One more song from 1776 repeatedly refers to John Adams as Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson all argue with him about who should draft the Declaration of Independence.
Sloop John B by The Beach Boys Originally titled “The John B. Sails,” this Bahamian folk song was first published in 1916. The Kingston Trio recorded it in 1958 with the title, “The Wreck of the John B.” The Beach Boys recorded Brian Wilson’s adaptation in 1966 for their groundbreaking album Pet Sounds. It was their fastest selling song to date, with over half a million sales in less than two weeks. Rolling Stone ranked it at 276 on “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
John Barbour by Great Big Sea A king asks his daughter why she looks sad, and she explains that she misses her true love. When the king learns that the man is merely one of his sailors, he vows to hang him. But when he sees the striking young man, he asks John if he’ll marry his daughter and take charge of his lands. Oh, but wait for John’s reply.
John Donne by Michael Clem Referencing the poem “The Sun Rising” by John Donne, Clem complains about the sun waking him in the morning. He wasn’t much of a morning person in his Sophomore year of college when he had to attend a poetry class at 10:00 am.
John Lee Supertaster by They Might Be Giants In the intro to the song, John Flansburgh says, “When I was 39 years old, I heard a story. I found out that there're people walking among us who have superpowers. These people are called Supertasters. To a Supertaster, bitter fruits taste far more bitter, and sweets far more sweet. Then, just a few months ago, I had the chance to meet a real, live Supertaster named John Lee. And this is his true story."
John The Revelator by John Mellencamp Originally recorded by the gospel-blues musician Blind Willie Johnson in 1930, the song refers to John of Patmos who wrote the Book of Revelation in the Bible. Many artists have recorded versions of the song, including Depeche Mode, Jerry Garcia, The White Stripes, and Santana.
Piano Man by Billy Joel When Joel was trying to get out of his recording contract with Family Productions, he worked as a lounge musician in Los Angeles from 1972 to 1973. This song relates his real-life experiences in that role. It became his first major hit and his signature song. It has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress. I like to think of it as my birthday present, as it peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1974.

JP SAXE WANTS TO MAKE YOU FEEL “SAFE” - NEW SINGLE OUT NOW
Today, multi-platinum master storyteller JP Saxe releases “Safe,” a sweetly quiet but subtly sticky new single out via Arista Records. The R&B-kissed pop track is the multi-platinum GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s first new solo song in more than a year, since Saxe hit the road in late 2023 in support of John Mayer’s arena tour then kept going deep into 2024 on his own sold-out, globe-spanning, headlining run. This past week, JP premiered the song live at what would have been a single release show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom that he instead transformed into a NY For LA benefit show raising money for those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. He was joined by friends Allison Ponthier, Ally Salort, Elliot Skinner and Kristiane. Coverage of that was featured in Billboard & Rolling Stone.
His first release “Safe” is more beat-based than Saxe’s most recent singles, creating a mellow mood out of a reversed soul sample, bent synth tones, shimmering keys, and crunchy drums. But our host delivers his signature mix of personal reflection and humorous wit all the same: “Never needed a sword, never needed a shield / Never stormed a castle on a battlefield / Haven’t needed a fist since since third period gym / Jeremy Copeland, honestly f--- that kid.” Soon, it’s clear that the battle he faces is a more subtle one: learning to make his partner feel emotionally protected.
On his first release since 2023, JP shares:
It’s a strange feeling to be dropping a song about what it means to protect the people we love on this particular week. I guess we don’t really get to decide what our songs are about. I thought it was about emotional safety — about the masculine urge to protect with fighting before listening, and relearning what it really means to make the people we love feel secure around us. Right now it feels like "hey checking on you" texts and donations to the gofundme's of our friends who've lost their homes and voting for environmental protection policies and against the leaders who oppose them. “I want to make you feel safe” feels like, “come over stay as long as you’d like.” I have a love/hate relationship with the way songs intertwine their way into the scariest parts of our lives. I just hope this one can lovingly contribute to our conversations about how we’re all looking out for each other.
The comforting cut reunites Saxe with GRAMMY®-winning songwriter/producer Malay (Frank Ocean, FLECTHER, Lorde). The pair worked together closely on Saxe’s last album, 2023’s A Gray Area, which included the groove-steeped, John Mayer-featuring “I Don’t Miss You,” plus collaborations with the likes of five-time Latin GRAMMY® winning Colombian musician Camilo, folk-pop trio Tiny Habits, and singer-songwriterLizzy McAlpine. The set garnered praise from Billboard, People, Forbes, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, and more. By openly exploring his deepest thoughts, anxieties, and emotions, Saxe shared his most relatable song set to date.
Last year, after canvassing North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia on his A Grey Area World Tour, Saxe shared a pair of performance albums: A Grey Area (Live Sessions) — featuring acclaimed guest instrumentalists like Cory Henry and Tal Wilkenfeld — and Live on Stage, recordings from his recent tours that included a moving solo version of his late 2019 blockbuster, “If the World Was Ending.” Stay tuned for more music from JP Saxe in 2025.

Ooo the songs I play on guitar. I mean I play a lot of the driver era (obviously), Christ you’d think I was a part of the band with the way I constantly talk about them lmao. Obviously a few R5 songs, the very first song I ever learnt was actually “loud”. Also loveee playing some John Mayer. He’s obviously a very intricate guitarist , so his stuff is more fun to play. So songs like “slow dancing in a burning room”, “stop this train” and “something like Olivia” and all that business. Also throwing this one out there because my friends pure drop their panties whenever I play this song for some reason (don’t think they realise how simple it actually is to play lol) but also because I saw it in your bio thingy so I think you’ll appreciate it but I can also play Sex on fire🫡 lmao 🎶
honestly at this point you should just join the band. make it a trio haha. huge respect for the first song you learned being Loud by R5. that song HITS even to this day— i don’t care what none of y’all say!!! and ohhh i love John Mayer‘s earlier music. my brother’s fave song of his to play was Bold As Love. BUT SEX ON FIRE ? 😏 idc how easy it is to play that song is ALWAYS a panty dropper !!! kings of leon holds a special place in my heart. they were my first ever concert, and i’ll never forget that moment. they started my passion for watching music live haha. anyways you literally have a one way ticket into legendary status if you whip out the guitar and start playing sex on fire after a hook up…do not miss ur chance 🎶 anon🤣

John Mayer - Live at the Nokia Theater [Pop Blues]
John Mayer - Live at the Nokia Theater [Pop, Blues] I am a pretty big John Mayer fan, so I’ve always marveled at how amazing this live album is. John was on fire that night, and it seemed like he didn’t miss one vocal or guitar note. And the live version variations of songs he did (e.g. Stop This Train) are amazing. And can’t forget it’s the only version of In Your Atmosphere he “released”. Mayer and the Trio and the rest of that band were truly in peak form that night imo, but what say the rest of you? Is this one of the better live albums? Submitted December 08, 2024 at 12:23PM by redbullsgivemewings https://ift.tt/IOF48G7 via /r/Music
