Hi! I’ve been reading Hellblazer lately, and I was wondering if you had any thoughts regarding John’s relationships in the comic? Either romantic, platonic, or familial (I know you’ve already talked a lot about Goldie especially, but I’d love to hear your thoughts about Cheryl and Gemma, too!)

My ghost sensitive friends can see ghosts in photos so this works actually. Tony Masters was not invited to the family photo because Johnstantine really doesn't want a photo of or with him haha.

I'm only about a hundred issues into Hellblazer but I love Cheryl and Gemma! I like that John cares for his sister and niece to such a point that if he learns his niece is in trouble he'd drop everything to save her even when he's about to get funky-style with someone. I find his relationship with these two just so endearing. They're a nice break from his other abusive family members. Other opinions on John's romantic partners under the cut!

Emma: excellent. I hope she keeps haunting John forever.

Zed: I think she's fun and a great love interest. Mysterious, cunning and tragic in a way that reinforces Hellblazer themes really well. I don't really like her return with that sort of culty following afterwards, just in terms of vibes. Idk I don't trust that brand of white woman haha.

Marj: Also a great love interest! I like how she contrasts Zed as the more down to earth hippie one. While I think she's sweet, I do agree with John's later assessment that they're not a fit realistically. Somehow I still don't trust this white woman. Just a vibe.

Kit: Icon. Queen. She should get to dump John and break his heart as many times as she wants.

Sarah: You deserved better, narratively. The minute this character showed up I took a long break from reading Hellblazer cuz I knew she was going to be Disposable Black Love Interest and yep, she was. John spent his whole time with her fixated on his ex-gf Helen, instead. The only saving grace is at least Sarah dumped John before meeting a worse fate by sticking around.

Chas (lmao): never did anything wrong and should be allowed to beat up John whenever he wants.

(Honorable mention since I'm also reading Spurrier's Hellblazer run too) Liza Ikumelo: I love her as a tragic mom to Noah Ikumelo and I like that she and John had a fling resulting in the tragedy that is John being an absent dad to Noah's younger years. Did she have to be a cop though. Spurrier is so much more critical of american cops in comparison for some reason >_>

"Non Est Asylum"/the Pilot - john's pov goes all slow mo when chas gets out of the cab the first time; it's implied that they go grocery shopping together off screen; john compliments chas' "famous" rack of lamb AND chas laughs at the dumbest john joke; chas goes to pick him up from a bar at the end like the most long-suffering boyfriend ever

"The Devil's Vinyl" - “All right, Daddy.”

"Danse Vaudou" - i feel like not enough people remember this but there's this really quick bit where john and chas are discussing previous/established ~schemes~ they could use to get information out of the police officers at the site of the accident (right before zed goes off and solves the problem way faster). anyway it's a nice friendship moment at the very least/speaks to them having been around together a long time

"Rage of Caliban" - the sword of night conversation. the butt slap chas has literally no reaction to but the sound editor made SURE we heard connect. john looking SO concerned when chas gets like, his knees pinned between two cars. (like ok john i'm sure that HURT but you literally KNOW he can't be killed and also. that's relatively SO minor.)

"Quid Pro Quo" - i mean beyond the literal queerbaiting we got from the creator before hand ("john's going to kiss a man in this episode!") will we ever really recover from the fact that john drunkenly put an arthurian spell that had literally never worked before, on chas, and it turns out the only reason it DID work on chas is bc he was like....objectively a "greater knight" than the other 47 people who died in the fire around him? what does that even MEAN?

(Okay, I had intended to wait on this till we got to CHAS but I forgot that the Letters from Watson chronology would get to BRUC first and BRUC also has a fun burglary sequence.)

Friends. If you enjoy reading about Victorian dudes committing burglary while being extremely in love with each other, please go read E W Hornung's Raffles stories. E W Hornung was ACD's brother in law, the Raffles stories are him going "what if Holmes and Watson but criminals though?", and there's some fun intertextuality between them and the Holmes stories. (For instance: is CHAS Raffles fanfic? Maaaaybe. Did ACD borrow ideas from Hornung for FINA/EMPT? Could be!) I don't know, man, I just think that's neat.

The main characters are:

A J Raffles: cricketer, man about town, jewel thief. ADHD icon, has no impulse control and a death wish you can see from space. Engaged in a constant battle with John Watson for the title of Most Bisexual Man in Victorian Lit. Thinks tricking someone into robbing a jewelry store together is romantic. Deals with the majority of his problems by theft, barefaced lying, or faking his own death.

Bunny: our narrator, sometime poet/journalist, also a jewel thief (not as good). He's not going to tell you his actual name till the last damned story, but he's really such a rabbit that you aren't going to mind. Drinks too much, angsts constantly about a) the immorality of crime and b) not being able to grow a proper mustache, only crossdresses in one story but talks about it in a way that implies he's done it before. Is dreadful at pretty much everything, but in a very endearing way.

(I love both of them so much.)

Together, they fight commit crimes! Often while holding hands.

There are three collections of short stories and one novel, plus a variety of adaptations of varying quality. The short stories are pretty consistently delightful (except for "The Fate of Faustina" imo). The novel is perhaps not as good - some things don't work as well when you stretch them to novel-length - but I haven't finished it yet so who knows? It might improve. In any case, the plot isn't great but Raffles and Bunny are still very enjoyable.

Anyway, go read Raffles and then please come and talk to me about it. If you'd prefer to wait until you can get the stories in your inbox, Letters from Bunny is starting up in March 2024 (on the Ides, natch). It's going to be a fun time.

(The negator is another iconic creature, although one whose card is simply not up to snuff nowadays- the balance of power has tipped so that its astronomical drawback is not worth the creature you get. Still, the obliterator is clearly a riff on it- and got its own, incredibly aesthetically boring riff later- and even then it's simply too fabulous a design not to use. Can you say "xenomorph"?

Lorewise, these explicitly saw most usage in the leadup to full invasion- perhaps, in a hypothetical Phyrexia campaign, this could be the final boss of the second act, before the REAL invasion force finally arrives.)

CR16 NE Medium Aberration (Phyrexian)

Negators are perfected assassins of Phyrexia, designed to eliminate key targets with compleat efficiency. They are singleminded in this pursuit- one infamous document stated simply "It exists to cease." Indeed, a negator's heart is terribly stilled- they are not known to experience any emotion but the satisfaction of a job well done and the desire to achieve so.

Negators, being stealth operatives and assassins, are rarely used once a full-scale invasion begins, although they are often deployed just in the leadup to it. Each negator is given all Phyrexia knows of its target, and is simply placed as close as Phyrexia can get it without garnering attention and sent to kill. Negators are surprisingly skilled at stealth and disguise, able to walk as a hunched figure through whatever streets it may need to to reach its target, and are surprisingly eloquent and skilled actors when they need to lie. Once it makes its kill, however, a negator rarely makes time for stealth. Such negators will begin a return to Phyrexia (such that they might possibly be reset, reprogrammed, and reused), but generally lack the precautions of one who has yet to make a kill. These assassinations are its purpose; it seems some higher part of it shuts off once it is done.

This wicked creature stands humanoid, with razor sharp claws and a smooth nubby head lined with tiny triangular teeth. Its body is dotted with glasslike hemispheres and wires arcing between body parts.

do you have a favourite outfit of John & Chaz’s throughout the series? (Or a favourite one to draw at least?) I fancy his blue little suit and chaz’s waist coat cafe shite.

Chas' little waistcoat is so cute, I really need to draw that tbh. I usually just draw Chas in the same kinda outfit with a leather jacket of sorts

John though, I love so many of his outfits! The blue suit is iconic, the gaudy late 80s colours in some of his outfits are amazing (remember seeing him in bright green pants and a bright yellow shirt it was awful and I loved it), the knitted sweaters are adorable, I need more of him wearing those. The PINK SUNGLASSES. He's such a little fashionista, I wish we saw more of it in modern media with him. Although I do also like the cartoon character same outfit all the time thing, it's got a flavour of neurodivergence to it that I love

One of my personal favourites is his look in city of demons, it's pretty obvious I take a lotta inspo from that when drawing my version of him. The stripy tie is just the perfect balance of punk and detective

“What’s your plan, knowing you have only 66 days to live?”

This journey began with Rainblood: Town of Death, an indie game I made back in 2010. The development process was a creative outlet for me as an architecture student, first in Beijing and later New Haven.

When I returned to China, I founded my own development studio, S-GAME, and Rainblood grew into a franchise that would later become Phantom Blade. Most of these titles were for smartphones and never released outside of China, but we still managed to build a fan base of over 20 million players.

Now, allow me to introduce Phantom Blade Zero, the spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood and the game we always wanted to make.

Kung-Fu Punk

Phantom World, the universe in which the game is set, is a place where many kinds of powers converge. Here you’ll find Chinese Kung-Fu, intricate machines reminiscent of steampunk, arts of the occult, and other intriguing elements that don’t quite fit into any of these categories.

In Phantom Blade Zero, you play as Soul, an elite assassin serving an elusive but powerful organization known simply as “The Order.” Soul is framed for the murder of The Order’s patriarch, gravely injured in the ensuing manhunt, and, though his life is saved by a mystic healer, the makeshift cure will only last for 66 days. Now, he must fight against powerful foes and inhuman monstrosities, all while seeking out the mastermind behind it all before his time runs out.

From Louis Cha’s Wuxia stories and Bruce Lee’s films to Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Donnie Yen in John Wick: Chapter 4, Phantom Blade Zero draws on a wide range of martial arts icons, but with a twist of its own. What we call “Kung-Fu Punk” instills a heavy dose of punk spirit and our unique visual aesthetic.
