Phantom Blade Zero “Year of the Dragon” special trailer: Rain and Blood
Phantom Blade Zero is in development for PlayStation 5 and PC. A release date has yet to be announced.
Message from Soulframe
It was over four years ago. I was working with Mr. Yang Tingmu, one of the top animators in China, to create video assets for our mobile games. We applied traditional Chinese painting styles to modern animation and invented a whole methodology of it. The legacy of our work is evident in Phantom Blade: Executioners, especially the cutscenes when you launch Overdrive moves.
Now, working on Phantom Blade Zero, a whole different beast backed by Unreal Engine 5, we feel it’s kind of a shame to simply abandon all the hard work we did over the years on 2D arts. A bit of repurposing would be nice.
We think it’s pretty cool to blend together the old and the new, the simplified and the complicated, the fast and the slow. If by any chance you’ =re an avid reader of Wuxia novels, especially those by Gu Long, this scene should feel dearly familiar—a confrontation, ominous atmosphere, the warriors size each other up, considering their available moves and possible consequences. Heavy suspense, suddenly someone makes the first move, and the fight is over the moment two blades clash.
The duel in this scene harkens back to the original Rainblood in 2008, the game at the root of the Phantom Blade universe. Two friends parted ways on a dark and stormy night, setting in motion a series of events with far-reaching consequences. This moment marks a beginning and an end. In the game universe—the death of adolescent innocence and the rise of adult ambitions and responsibilities. Outside the game, in the real-life universe—a transition from 2D to 3D, from mobile to console and PC, from local operation to worldwide publishing.
So! Here it is, a little something to kick start the Year of the Dragon. At the end of the trailer you will find new footage of Phantom Blade Zero—running on PlayStation 5. Yep, you read it right. The game is R-E-A-L real and we are actively working on it! Expect more reveals as well as a playable demo as we plunge deeper into 2024!
May you all have the grace and power of the dragon!

Nice try Bioware, but I know the state of Southern Thedas better than you do.
First off, it matters if the Hero of Ferelden is alive or not. When the First Warden recalled all wardens, our hero knew that was a bad call and refused, finally splitting off from Weisshaupt after years of mismanagement and taking scores of wardens with them. Their presence and leadership makes all the difference, rallying southern Thedas once more against the blight. If you have only an Orlesian Warden Commander in Amaranthine they’re less inspiring, but as long as you’ve done Awakening they are a boon nonetheless. There is someone to lead the fight against the darkspawn while other focus on the Venatori.
If you 100% completed Awakenings and also Soldier’s Peak, the Ferelden wardens have never been so prepared. They’re organized, they’re outfitted and they’ve been ready for this for years. Also, if you allied with the Architect then you have scores of strange research to give you an edge.
If Merrill completed her Eluvian then she moves south once again and joins the effort. She’s managed to cleanse the blight before and she’s ready to try it again. And her knowledge of the crossroads gives the south an edge on their movement and supply lines. If Hawke’s sibling is a Warden they accompanied her.
If the Inquisitor let Briala have power in any way, the Dales become the leaders in the war against the Venatori, forming a formidable alliance with Ferelden, Orzammar and the Marches, the likes of which have never been seen. And if you completed Jaws of Hakkon then their alliances with the Avvar and Chasind are stronger than ever.
Of course, if the Inquisitor kept the Wardens around after Here Lies the Abyss then their numbers are bolstered. It may cost Wiesshaupt later, but that’s Rooks problem. And if you completed the Descent, then the Inquisitor and Warden had a much better idea of what was coming and spent ten years getting ready.
They will not be broken.
They will weather this storm.

edit (10/23/2024) now that the poll is over: Original version, with 10 questions, from April 2023 here
And, given that the original is from April 2023, that means I can very easily say:
No, this was not an ISAT reference!
Just because I use parentheses and 2nd person pov and love the same concepts of what a time loop can do to a person doesn't mean it's ISAT
(Yes, I like ISAT, the original poll is why I was recommended the game! But if you look at the original, you can see all the origins of the options to choose from, including what spurred me on with the moss option from the replies)
If I were going to make something for ISAT, I would never be so vague, you can simply look at my ao3 for proof of that

“What’s your plan, knowing you have only 66 days to live?”
This journey began with Rainblood: Town of Death, an indie game I made back in 2010. The development process was a creative outlet for me as an architecture student, first in Beijing and later New Haven.
When I returned to China, I founded my own development studio, S-GAME, and Rainblood grew into a franchise that would later become Phantom Blade. Most of these titles were for smartphones and never released outside of China, but we still managed to build a fan base of over 20 million players.
Now, allow me to introduce Phantom Blade Zero, the spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood and the game we always wanted to make.
Kung-Fu Punk
Phantom World, the universe in which the game is set, is a place where many kinds of powers converge. Here you’ll find Chinese Kung-Fu, intricate machines reminiscent of steampunk, arts of the occult, and other intriguing elements that don’t quite fit into any of these categories.
In Phantom Blade Zero, you play as Soul, an elite assassin serving an elusive but powerful organization known simply as “The Order.” Soul is framed for the murder of The Order’s patriarch, gravely injured in the ensuing manhunt, and, though his life is saved by a mystic healer, the makeshift cure will only last for 66 days. Now, he must fight against powerful foes and inhuman monstrosities, all while seeking out the mastermind behind it all before his time runs out.
From Louis Cha’s Wuxia stories and Bruce Lee’s films to Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Donnie Yen in John Wick: Chapter 4, Phantom Blade Zero draws on a wide range of martial arts icons, but with a twist of its own. What we call “Kung-Fu Punk” instills a heavy dose of punk spirit and our unique visual aesthetic.
