The Croods: A New Age (2020)
Tumblr media
Though 2013’s The Croods had some appeal, audiences weren’t exactly beating each other with clubs trying to get to the sequel. With Universal acquiring DreamWorks in 2016, canceling its production then changing its mind, and then the COVID-19 Pandemic hampering its production, The Croods: A New Age has finally arrived. This follow-up isn’t terrible - it’s about on-par with the first - but it won’t win the franchise any new fans and overall, is pretty forgettable.
The Croods, Guy (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), and their animal pets stumble upon the sophisticated home of the Bettermans - Phil (Peter Dinklage), Hope (Leslie Mann), and their daughter Dawn (Kelly Marie Tran). Though Ugga (Catherine Keener), Thunk (Clark Duke), Gran (Cloris Leachman), Sandy (Kayley Crawford), Eep (Emma Stone), and Guy are taken by the luxuries offered, Grug (Nicolas Cage) prefers the simple life they had before. Seeing an opportunity to pair Guy with his daughter and split up the relationship developing between him and Eep, Phil and Hope conspire to manipulate Grug and Ugga.
As before, A New Age offers visual treats in the form of mishmashed, made up prehistoric creatures, and a gorgeous color palette. It's so bright and poppy it’s a shame most people will be stuck watching it at home. I also enjoyed the voice work, particularly from Peter Dinklage. Everyone is still a name to sell the movie to adults rather than proper voice actors - but no one is bad or distracting.
The film’s two biggest flaws are the humor and story. Most of the jokes come from historical anachronisms. Thunk becomes obsessed with the Betterman’s window, spending all of his time watching it. The Croods are puzzled and/or dazzled by toilets with running water, hairdos, walls, that sort of thing. It isn’t as funny as in 2013 when Guy was impressing them with shoes and fire because it makes the characters drift further and further from their cavepeople origin - the series’ one unique characteristic.
Partway through, the plot shifts. Grug's been told to stay away from the bananas growing everywhere so of course, he eats them all. This introduces dire consequences. The Bettermans's sinister scheming is thrown out the window. Probably because writers Dan & Kevin Hageman, Paul Fisher, and Bob Logan couldn’t figure out how to make it fill an entire movie’s running time. Here’s what I’m wondering. If the bananas were so important… why didn’t the Bettermans tell Grug WHY he shouldn’t eat the bananas? It doesn’t make sense but it’s a way to give the female characters something to do: rescue the men by transforming into heavy metal-inspired warriors. What that has to do with prehistoric times, I have no idea. They make the modern-day songs sprinkled throughout feel slightly out of place but the movie would’ve been better if it had stuck to its original theme of a father worrying that his daughter is about to leave the nest.
Anyone who saw The Croods and enjoyed it will similarly enjoy The Croods 2. It's serviceable enough to keep you entertained the whole time but this movie isn’t funny, smartly written, innovative. or clever enough for you to ever want to see it again. (March 23, 2021)

Room Service
SPECIAL CHRISTMAS PROMPT
Joel/Asana
Requested by: the Anon who requested four.
Summary: As a famous spellsinger, Joel has been asked to light the capital city’s iconic Christmas tree, and do other events. Leaving Asana alone. But, a midnight feast, courtesy of room service, finishing the night on a positive note.
Tumblr media
An enormously large Christmas tree towered over the Central Square of the city but people from across the country had waited for this traditional day where they would turn on the lights to celebrate the coming of the festive holiday. Though this year, the lightning would be done a little differently. Joel will sing a song and use his magic to light the country’s iconic tree.
Of course, a massive Christmas festival had been set up around the event too. A stage had been erected near in the park where famous singers from across the country would belch out Christmas carols.
A flea market of stalls selling all kinds of items, Christmas and non-Christmas related items, attracted an interested crowd down by the riverwalk, stretching along the icy paved paths as far as the Ferris wheel. Rides and other fun activities were also available across the city. It is a perfect night for families, couples and just people looking to have a good time.
Snow had been swept to the side by the council, but new snow drizzled over the city and people’s feet dragged clumps of the white ice over the once cleanly swept path. Turning around to Joel, Asana smiled, “It’s such a beautiful sight. The snow drizzling above the city lights…is breathtaking,” she stared out the window, “Not to mention, the beautifully decorated city streets, it’s very Christmassy.”
Joel linked his cufflinks on his tuxedo and smiled admirably at her excitement, “The city usually spares no expense on this festival, but it is nice to witness and be apart of,” then, he hugged her from behind and kissed the nape of her neck, “But, won’t it be even better when I light up the tree with my magic under the same sky.”
She smiled brightly, “Yes, watching my husband sing to light up the tree will be very special,” she turned around to face him, “It’s the view not to miss tonight.” She straightened his bow tie and straightened his jacket, “You look so handsome, Joel.”
“I feel bad…,” he spoke his honest feelings.
“Why?” she wondered, trying not to mess up his groomed and slicked back hair.
His hand cupped her cheek and then traced the twisted locks of her long brown hair, swept over her shoulder, “Because, we’re at this festival and I have to leave you alone for one stupid song. Even now, all I have been doing is getting ready and you’re stuck in here with me…Well, not that you have to be.”
“What, and go exploring all on my own?” she laughed and wrapped her hands around his neck, “For one thing, it would feel super embarrassing being a married woman going around alone, and I’m not about to take off my ring. Second, I know you won’t let me go around alone because you always think I’m going to get hit on by other men, not discounting that woman in the bar at that music opera theatre last year. Lastly, you and I both know I’m going to get distracted and get lost.”
He smiled and wrapped his arms around her waist, “I’m glad you understand, but I still feel bad about this. You’ll be front and centre watching me right?” he put his nose on hers.
“Of course,” she giggled and kissed the top of his nose, and bobbed it with his finger, “If you truly feel guilty about not being able to spend this festival together tonight, then make it up to me through a date in the near future.”
“I think you’re becoming high maintenance, Asana,” he joked, pinching her nose in reply, “However, I think that’s very reasonable. We’ll have our own Christmas date after this.”
She giggled, “I look forward to it,” she leaned in for a kiss, but as she did there was a knock at the door. However, that did not stop Joel, he pressed his lips to hers and a male spoke from behind the door.
“Mr. Crawford. We are ready for you.”
Joel finished his kiss before he pulled away, “Yes, coming,” he answered and opened the door and turned back to Asana, “Go find a good spot to watch me.” She nodded, and then he left and she watched his back disappear down the hallway from their hotel room they were staying in for the duration of the event, and were scheduled to check out tomorrow since it ended tonight.
Racing from the hotel, she took a fire escape to reach the square faster. A sea of people, the colour spectrum of black woollen trench coats against the colourful lights of the city and the white snow drizzling from the sky and spread across the ground, filled her vision.
Effortlessly, she weaved between the people to seek a good vantage point to watch her husband in action, and deliver happiness to the people. “Wow, it’s so beautiful,” Asana admired the large tree and underneath the tree were presents which would be donated among the needy and sick these holidays.
There was a podium with a floating microphone for the MC of the festival to be heard through the crowd. People gathered rapidly, and soon the tree was surrounded by people, and reporters had taken pictures and swamped Joel with questions to the side. She watched him with a proud smile, “Hard to believe that’s my husband. I’m proud of you babe,” she whispered, hoping he heard her somehow.
Once all the formalities were done, the people cheered Joel on stage. Of course they would, he’s a famous spellsinger these days. Admiring his beautiful voice, the lights on the tree responded, and a golden veil of light enveloped the tree lighting it up. He added a twist though, and golden fireworks rang through the sky, receiving the applause and cheers from the people.
“Oh, Joel,” feeling like the happiest and proudest wife in the entire world right now, she smiled at his handsome figure shining under the lights and could feel the warmth of his magic flowing through the sky, “I am very proud of you.”
Once that was over, he had some other events to do for the city, and then he would be free to spend the rest of the festival with her. However, it all dragged on longer than he imagined, and started to worry. It wasn’t right for him to be enjoying the festival through the events he had to do as part of his job, and his wife was alone in their room.
Or so he had thought, she was alone but not in her room. She purchased a hot cup of hot chocolate and drank it alone on a park bench next to all the rides and near the ice skating rink. She wanted to go on all of them, but it did not feel right to enjoy them without Joel. As time went by, she watched the park empty and the body heat from the people disappear, followed by rides being deconstructed as the night came to an end.
Eventually, her energy wore off and she fell asleep on the park bench. One Joel was free, he returned to the room with a bouquet of flowers and a box of Christmas chocolates, “Asana, I’m very sorry-,” he looked around but the room was dark and vacant, “Asana? Are you here?” he checked their bedroom but it was still freshly made with no person within the sheets. “Don’t tell me she’s still out!” He turned to the clock which read it was quarter to one in the morning. He ran out of the room, hoping he was only overreacting and maybe she had found some old friends to catch up with, since he knew the Goldstein brothers lived in the city, so did Amelia. “Please be safe,” he worriedly whispered.
First, he searched all over the vacant central square around the tree but there was no sign of her. Then he went by the riverwalk, free of stores now the festival was over, but she wasn’t there either, and it was getting late. Worried, he sang to cast a search spell and followed the beam of light. It lead him to the park, where she was sound asleep on the bench.
Worried, he rushed over to her and shook her body, he feared something happened to her, “Asana!” he repeatedly called her name, until she eventually stirred. Finally, her pink orbs opened and she found herself staring into Joel’s eyes, but then shivered from being out in the cold for a while.
“Joel? We can go around the festival now if you’re done?” she smiled, but his heart sank.
He suddenly became torn between yelling at her for falling asleep in an unsafe area and being speaking to her gently because the festival was well and truly over. He had left his wife alone at the start of Christmas, and at an event she had been excited about to the point she waited and waited on this park bench, “Oh Asana, I’m so sorry to have left you alone like that but what were you thinking staying out here like this?”
“I was waiting for you…but you’re here now, right?” she remained positive even though he felt terrible, “We don’t need a festival to have fun, because we can make our own fun.”
“Asana…,” she grabbed his hands, but felt really cold when she stood to her feet. She let out sneeze after sneeze from being in the cold, and Joel thought it best to get her inside where it was warmer and the fire was raging. Taking off his jacket, he put it around her shoulders, “You’re right, we can make our own fun but right now, you need to warm up in front of the fire back at the room.”
Joel shivered a little now, and she felt bad about taking his jacket and stopped him from walking ahead, “Wait,” she held onto his arm and pulled herself underneath his arms and wrapped the jacket around him too, “I would feel bad if you got a cold because of me.”
He pulled her close to him, wrapping his arms around her to the point that he was carrying her and hugging her back to the room. When they got to their room, Asana laid herself on then rug in front of the fire. Then, her vision was filled with his face, and he didn’t hesitate to plant a deep yet sweet kiss on her lips, then he pulled away.
“I have the most amazing wife any man could ever ask for,” he confessed, putting his lips to hers again, “I swear I will make up for tonight. I didn’t expect them to keep me that late.”
Then, she had a bright idea in her mind, “Let’s stay in the city for the rest of the holidays and have an amazing holiday. To start off our Christmas morning, I suggest we order room service.”
Just as she mentioned it, Joel grabbed the phone and the flowers and chocolates he had purchased and rejoined her by the fire, “Hey, I got you flowers and chocolates as an apology…and I got the phone. So, what shall we order?”
“Wine, that’s a must…um…assorted chocolates…and chips and nuggets. Let’s just order everything and have fun with it.”
“This is an epic midnight snack,” Joel laughed, and ordered everything and had a early morning feast in front of the fire. The wine, however, made them quite drunk and in front of the fire, as the sun began to rise, they became very intimate.

Stop the Joel Crawford Hate: WH+
I love the WH fandom and really am not liking the hate on Joel.
I know he did the wrong thing in the unhappy ending, but it is understandable that he did what he did because he does not want to hurt her like he had when he had to leave.
Even in Vincent’s route, it ties in well with his own story and I can understand the frustration that he is feeling when he has waited so long to see the love of his life to have feelings for someone else, and realising that he had made a mistake, possibly, all those years ago.
Yes, MC is hurt by his actions but he too is hurting and is probably bitter the way he is because of his actions that he can’t forgive himself for. Even in his route where she loves him, you can tell that he doesn't forgive himself for what he did through his constant promise that he’ll never leave her again.
But, here’s the thing. Joel had to leave her when he was a child and the fact that his leaving was around the same time her parents died, he wanted to make her pain a lot less. That is understandable, because he loves her.
When you love someone there is no limit to what you’d do to ensure that they never feel pain. You never want to see the tears of the person you love, and this is proven in Vincent’s route. People say that he’s being dramatic, but put yourself in his shoes - I’d be pretty upset too. Everything he has done, is because he does not want to see her in pain.
So please, stop hating on Joel. He’s not a bad guy, or an asshole that some of you are calling him. He’s a guy in love, give him a break.

It's a funny world we live in, isn't it? The days are only getting faster, the end of the year looms and here I am, sitting back still; waiting for something to happen. People have come and gone, friendships have bloomed and fallen but the important people are still here - and then there's you. You've come into the picture and fitted in so perfectly, you filled the loneliness in my life and brought back my happiness. You're the best girlfriend anyone could ask for. I think it's time to stop worrying about the future, focus on the present (create my future) and be grateful for what I have. I'm very lucky.

Jealousy. (Joelxreader)
Genre: fluff, maybe a little bit of angst? Idk 😅
Summary: You were hanging out with Vincent and a specific someone (*hint* *hint* It's Joel. 😂) happened to see you, and didn't like it all that much. What was happening the entire Vincent route basically. That happened to lead to some fluffy, cutesy stuff; yeah, you get the point. 😂 That was probably the worst summary ever. Oh well.
Now on with the one shot/imagine 😂:
(This is written in first person point of view. *the reader's point of view*)
It was a sunny day; I had prepared to meet Vincent in the courtyard after class, considering it's been a while since we last hung out together properly; Lately, we've just been greeting each other, and that was it. He was mostly busy with "top secret" business at the ministry while I was busy with classes and studying, so we decided it was time to spend some time together.
I had baked some cupcakes earlier, so we can both eat them together. I walked around the courtyard, searching for my friend, but I couldn't see him anywhere. He's late. I sat down on the grass and patiently waited for him.
After a few minutes, I could see Vincent jogging towards me. He starts panting lightly after stopping right in front of me. "(Y/N), I'm so sorry I'm late! I had some work to do, and I got caught up and ended up being late." He frowns slightly. "It's okay." I gave him a cheerful smile, "I haven't been waiting for long." I assure him. "Really? Thank god." He says more to himself than to me, as he lays down right beside me.
My immediate response was to lay down too; it was something we did a lot after all. "So, how are your studies going?" Vincent looks at me with a gentle smile. "I'm still struggling a bit, but I'm doing a lot better than when I first showed up." I reply honestly. "I'm sure you can get even better." He grins, "I hope so." I sigh. "Oh! I almost forgot!" I sat up quickly. Slowly, Vincent sat up with a confused look on his face. I open up my bag while Vincent tries to peek inside it in curiosity; "What is it?" He asks, "You'll see!" I reply, getting excited.
"I made us cupcakes!" I pull out the small box that had Vincent's cupcake, "Awwhh, you know I don't like sweet things that much, but since you made them, I'm going to have some." He smiles; before I could cheer, he finishes his sentence, "Only if you feed me though." A smirk forms on his face. I felt the heat rise to my face, "Don't be silly; why can't you just eat them yourself?" I look away to hide my embarassment, "I'm tiiirreed; I've been working a lot lately!" He whines. "Please?" He looks at me with semi-pleading eyes, "ugh..fine." I mutter. He grins as I take out the cupcake and look towards him. My face was indeed still burning with embarrassment. Regardless, I still tried to hide it and brought the cupcake to his mouth. He wore a smug expression, clearly proud of how much I was blushing.
"Yup, definitely tastes better when you're the one that baked them AND fed them to me." For how long can he keep that smirk on his face? Yeah, well, we're about to find out. "J-just shut up, okay?!" My face got even more red. He chuckles before taking the cupcake from my hand; his fingers brushing across mine in the process. "That's enough blushing for you today; you're as red as a tomato." He teases before taking a bite out of the cupcake. "That's your fault!" I argue, but he only laughs in response.
"Aren't you going to eat too?" He looks at me, "Oh yeah, I got one for me too!" I say as I take mine out. I eagerly take a bite out of the cupcake and enjoy the taste. Vincent laughs lightly, "What?" I furrow my eyebrows in confusion, "Nothing." He replies. "What is it?" I playfully hit his arm; he laughs before responding, "Nothing. You look cute..and you've got something on your lips." He says. My hand immediately flies up to my lips, "Here?" I ask, "Nope." He shakes his head. "Here? I ask again after moving my hand. "No.." his fingers reach for my chin and lift my face upwards, as he draws closer to my face. "Right..about...here.." he whispers as his face moved closer to mine. He's going to kiss me! His eyes were shut while mine were quickly darting all around the place as if seeking help.
In that moment, I spotted a figure a bunch of feets away. It was Joel! My eyes made contact with his. I couldn't read his expression very well; it was either anger or pain. A few seconds after we made eye contact, he turned around and left.
As if out of instincts, I pushed Vincent away before his lips could touch mine. His eyes shot open, and he stared at me in surprise. "I..I gotta go! It was nice hanging out with you! See you later!" I blurt before grabbing my bag and dashing after Joel who was way ahead of me by now.
"Joel! Joel, wait!" I called out for him when I got closer. He kept walking and ignored me. "Joel! Please, wait!" I call out again, this time more desperately. He takes one more step before stopping. He doesn't turn around, however. My legs come to a halt before I slowly approach him. "Joel?" I ask, tentatively, "What?" He still didn't turn around.
"What's the matter?" I reach for his hand; he flinches a bit but doesn't pull away. "Nothing. Nothing at all." He replies coldly. He tries to complete walking, but I step in front of him and hold his arms, keeping him in place.
"Could you tell me what's wrong?" I look into his eyes, "Does it matter?! Vincent is who you like and care about, right?! So why does it matter if something is wrong?" He asks, annoyance clear in his voice. "But, Joel, you're my friend too! I care about you as well!" I reply. He pauses, looking at me, then proceeds to walk away. "I'm alright. Let's walk you to the dorms before you miss curfew." He replies in dismissal. I refrain from pushing it further. I quietly follow him; there was little distance between us, but we were acting as if the other didn't exist. Something was definitely wrong with him. Before long, we were already in front of the girls' dorms. "Goodnight, (Y/N)." Joel says quietly and turns around to leave. "Wait!" I held onto his sleeve, "Huh?" He looks at my hand then at my face. "Sorry!" I let go, "but..Joel, we've been friends since we were very little..I know when something is wrong with you, and right now...you're not okay.." I say while staring at the ground.
Suddenly, I found myself pushed against a wall. Joel had his hand on the wall near my head, cornering me. "The love of my life was feeding some other guy and kissing him while she considers me her friend. Just her friend. I've been loving her since we were very young, and in the end, I'm just her friend! She'll never see me as anything else. Just her friend. So yes! I'm not okay! And I can barely hold back from kissing her and claiming her as mine and no one else's! But I can't do that! You know why?! Because I'm just her friend!" I could see the anguish in his eyes very clearly. He was angry. He was jealous. But, most of all, he was hurt.
"Goodnight, (Y/N)." His hand slides off the wall, and he turns around and starts leaving. "B-but..but maybe..maybe she loves you too.." I reply quietly. The ground was the only place I could look at, currently. He stops dead in his tracks. "She was kissing another guy. I don't think so." He replies without turning around. "She wasn't. You didn't see her." I defend.
He finally turns around to look at me. It seemed like he was making sure I was serious or if the situation was real. Our eyes met, and we kept staring into each other's eyes for a few moments. "Maybe she loves me too? That's what you said?" A smile was tugging at the corners of his lips; my face started heating up as I realized I just confessed to Joel. "Uh..well..you know.." I started looking everywhere except his eyes.
He starts approaching me; my heart was beating really fast; it felt like it was gonna pop out of my chest. His hand gently touched my cheek; I looked up at him. "Does she like him? As more than just a friend? I need to know." He seemed to already know, but he just had to ask, didn't he?? "She does." I avert my gaze as I blush harder. "I like her too. A lot." Joel grins before slowly bringing his face closer to mine. In contrast to Vincent's time earlier, this time I wasn't trying to get away; I found myself drawing closer and closer until I could feel his lips on mine. After a few moments, we pulled away, grinning.
"I'm really happy you feel that way." He says; his eyes were shining brightly. So brightly that anyone could tell how happy he was. "Me too." I reply. We ended up kissing again. And again. And again. It wasn't until the dorm mother came yelling at us, that we stopped. Now we both have to do extra chores as a punishment...but at least it was a beautiful memory we could both remember and smile at. I wouldn't change anything about it.
