who: @joel--montgomery where: desert bloom winery
It didn't matter how much time had passed (years, in their case), each time Edgar saw Joel, it was as if only a few minutes had gone by. Some friendships were just like that -- they couldn't be defined by time or distance or even the ways in which life could change. It was strange considering how the two had met, but Edgar knew better than to question the decisions of fate.
"So, impressed," Edgar asked, clapping Joel on the shoulder. They'd just completed a private tour of the winery and now sat in Edgar's office. "Figured since you and your lot own it now, you may as well get to see your investment in action." Edgar wasn't bitter, even if the words could easily sound that way; he'd simply done what he'd needed to to insure that the winery remain in business even if it no longer belonged to his family, a decision he knew that most in his inner circle would not agree with. They were already vocal about the absolute loss of the family's legacy. Edgar could only imagine what would be said if they knew that he'd had more to do with that decision than he let on. "I'm glad you agreed to meet me here today. With the end of the season coming, we have so much maintenance scheduled and I can't even justify escaping for a few minutes nowadays."

𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐒
Name: Joel Montgomery
Age: 41
Occupation: Chief Financial Officer
Affiliation: Obsidian Holdings Executive Board Member
Gender & Pronouns: Man (he/him)
Faceclaim: Ricky Whittle
𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐘
While some might balk at the term “nepo baby,” Joel took it in stride. He decided early on that he would never apologize for the family he was born into – or dull his life down to appear relatable.
Traveling was a constant in Joel’s life. It started with boarding school and vacations and morphed itself into study abroad experiences. He decided to backpack during his university summers and quickly fell in love with traveling roads less frequented by the average tourist.
All Joel ever wanted to do was travel, but traveling is not a profession for the majority of the world. Such was the case for Joel Montgomery. He earned his MBA in finance and promptly entered the workforce.
Joel never intended to work alongside his maternal uncle at Obsidian Holdings, but there was something to be said about companies like Obsidian Holdings. At the very least, they were traveling every couple of years from one place to the next, and it was the closest he’d get to traveling for a living.
Over the years, he found himself on the executive board and at the top of Obsidian’s finance department. Joel was good at his job, nepotism notwithstanding, and things were going well until they weren’t anymore.
It started when his uncle, Obsidian’s former CEO, suffered an unfortunate car accident after meeting with one of the company’s largest donors. The damage to his uncle’s mind and body was unprecedented, but it never sat well with Joel how quickly his uncle’s best friend and right hand man, Hector Santiago, took over. It didn’t help that Joel knew there were whispers about his uncle needing to step down prior to that accident. It was all just a little too convenient.
Maybe Hector Santiago wanted Joel to find the strange blips in his expense report as a sort of warning. Maybe Hector assumed Joel was too stupid, or too endeared towards him, to look deeper. Either way, Joel wasn’t weak, stupid, or sentimental.
Digging deeper into Hector’s accounts revealed some interesting charges attached to a shell company. At first, Joel assumed this was some sort of offshore account – honestly, things would be different if it was.
In the end, Joel Montgomery knows Hector has a few skeletons in his closet and he’s certain that his uncle’s “accident” was a set-up. He doesn’t have complete proof (yet), but the speculation alone and the rage that follows has led Joel to pulling strings behind the scenes for the past couple of months from the west coast. It took months for Joel to square away his mortgage and other accounts before making the move with the rest of the board to Paxton. Now, he's here full-time for however long it takes.
His goal is to ultimately take Hector Santiago down. It’s not enough to find out the truth, but it will be enough to expose Hector as a fraud. There were reasons why his uncle inherited the company years ago and there were reasons why Hector did not; Joel knows that the way to hurt Hector is to show the business world that at best he’s hardly a businessman and that he’s a criminal at worst.
𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐂
Joel’s no hero – even if some of his moves will buy Paxton time to shield themselves from Obsidian’s attacks. He may be in the background, making sure Paxton isn’t as profitable as Hector and Obsidian want it to be by ways of anonymous donations and news leaks, but this is revenge through and through. The saying is that numbers never lie and Joel knows exactly how to cover his tracks while punching holes in Hector’s delicate plans. Sure, Joel has friends in this company, but everything he intends to do is one big betrayal. He’s convinced himself that once Hector’s exposed that the rest of the board and the employees will be fine. There’s never a lack of companies like Obsidian out in the world or small towns to prey upon. Yet, there is only one person for Joel to destroy and he intends to do that before Hector’s grand plans for Paxton come to complete fruition. Paxton is Hector’s first business venture as CEO and Joel’s prepared to die to make sure it will be his last.

"He spoils me," she answered simply, as if it were that easy, and for Lindsey it was. She adored Joel's parents. They'd always been kind to her, always doted on her and acted as if the things she had to say were important. She couldn't remember a time they'd made her feel less than. Every time she saw, the Montgomery's seemed genuinely happy to see her. Lindsey couldn't say the same about her own parents. The Gallaghers had never been a loving or close knit family. Even from a young age, Lindsey had known that she was nothing more than a means to an end for her parents, a pawn to be played in their political games, and they'd proven that time after time. It was hardly worth thinking about now, though. She was an adult; it didn't bother her anymore.
"I'll hold you to that," she replied with a soft smile. "Joel and Lindsey, traveling the country and spreading pizza happiness to all. I already feel bad for the poor sap who has to cook for us." She laughed at that. It was silly but she could actually picture it and Lindsey couldn't think of a better way to spend her retirement years than traveling with her best friend. After a few moments, she turned to consider him. "I mean, you can't go wrong with a mid century vibe, but I think you'd like the contemporary style. Lots of natural light. You can add plants, statement pieces. Maybe go with the sunken living room look. Just depends on how long you plan to stick around and how much you'd like to sink into this house."
"Now, why would you do that when I'm right here?" Joel pouted mockingly. His father considered Lindsey a pseudo-child and in many ways, Joel assumed, preferred her company. Joel never quite lived down his backpacking years.
He reached for a different slice of pizza, considering the hot sauce before taking a bite. Joel just stifled a cough at the burning bite, but he caught the tail-end of what Lindsey said about a food truck. Shaking his head, Joel gulped down the rest of his wine. "Sounds like a retirement plan -- you and me can have a pizza food truck that'll blow this out of the water. We'll drive it, someone else will cook."
His joke drifted off as Lindsey appraised the house. As she tilted her head, he watched as the gears turned in her mind. For a moment, everything else fell away and he wished time could stop and that he actually planned to stay in town long enough to settle in. If only this moment went back months ago. "What's my aesthetic? I always wondered what my friends think about me," Joel said, he rested his chin in his hand and batted his eyelashes, grinning.

Condensed Milk - A Dirty Money Comic pt 14
[part 1] [part 2] [part 3] [part 4] [part 5] [part 6] [part 7] [part 8] [part 9] [part 10] epilogue: [ part 11 ] [ part 12 ] [ part 13 ] [ x ] [part 15]
eyy its been a hot minute (a year)
i got over some of (but not all of) my block on this comic that's spinning out of control. there should be more i assume but idk when.
Notes below as per usje
blue sky bert deactivated. manly man soother applied.
ben's ISBN shirt is real - i think i first saw it at the U of T bookstore tbh.
Flashbacks take place sometime between October 2019 and March of 2020, I think.
marie's outfit is based on a drawing i did like TEN YEARS AGO if you can believe (thx for fishing that out @celestialily)
FIFO stands for Fly-In-Fly-Out (i.e. oil camp shift work)
i said earlier in the wips about how i like the trope where stoic characters have the same facial expression for everything- I just think it's funny that for Ben his sole expression is ^_^
joel saying "great to have you back home" is referring to ben being on the east coast / in his element, i'm not conflating NL with the Maritimes I promise.
that said I think they know him well enough that they can tell when he's PISSED lol. I feel like Ben tends to mask his anger a lot (which is why I showed his anger in a reflection rather than on his face in part 6 above there.
but yeah the point of this page is kind of. "ben isnt an idiot and he was genuinely mad and everyone knew it". well. everyone except bertie obviously.
ok seriously what questions do we still have to answer and how do i end this comic before the epilogue is longer than the og? i dont knowwwwww! tell meeeeeeee.

yes this character is lying about every single aspect of themselves & their backstory & life & religion & their entire personality is a facade & a mask yes the love interest still gets enough of a glimpse of their soul to fall truly in love but the terrifying thing is what if it doesn’t last once the mask slips away what if the only thing anyone could ever fall in love with is the facade
#accidentally started becoming insane about my ocs for this novel#which is a good thing I’m happy I’m creating characters I care about#but I can’t even post about it & tag it as a ship so other people will get it which is the bad part of writing something original 😫#u can tag this with ur blorbos but it is actually about my original characters Claire Calloway & Grant Montgomery#we love a deranged girlboss & a sweet jock malewife#they are somehow cheer captain & football captain power couple goals while also being very#Connecticut Clark & Malfina#or perhaps Sheila x Joel Santa Clarita diet lmao#a stairway to nowhere
