in true canadian fashion: sorry i'm late

although, in some ways, i'm actually early. You know what I realized doing this ambitious painting? this year is going to be the 15th anniversary of IAMP.

The call for auditions was uploaded September 22, 2009, and if I recall correctly my audition as artist and VA was accepted around October or November of that same year. I've grown a lot as an artist and as a person in that long time and for some weird reason I just can't let these guys go.

anyway, thanks for everyone who participated in the roulette, I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but I really struggle drawing all of these guys without losing steam. it really helped! especially since I don't do a lot of gouache work and I second guessed myself a lot. It warms my heart a little to see you guys engaged in this silly game.

what else is there to say. oh yeah, I put two types of maple leafs. the stereotypical sugar maple is in the upper right of course, but I also put a manitoba maple in the lower left because that's the kind of maple I'm most familar with where I'm from. it's long been my mission to bring the western rep in whatever I do, so it's kind of my love letter signature to my own constantly changing understanding of Who Am I and Where Am I From.

Got any New Brunswick headcanons?

So my usual disclaimer: I’ve never personally been to New Brunswick (though my mum has through Katimavik), I met only a couple people who explicitly mentioned they were from there, and most of what I know beyond stereotypes is from my own history readings and generally what I’ve learned via osmosis. As a result these ones are more fact-y and less uh... romance?

- Similar to BC in being geographically isolated. I think unlike BC though she really values her close contact with other people and her isolation makes her self sufficient yes but also Very aware of her interdependence on others. You break her trust though and she’ll break your face (or at least she will vividly imagine doing so).

- that said despite her close proximity to them I have a feeling that NS gets along ostensibly better with NB’s American neighbours than she does- I think she’s still got quite a loyalist heart even if her passion has been on slow burn for a few hundred years, lol. I do however think she still has a much closer relationship with her American neighbours than other provinces do, even if most of that relationship is dipping down for some good sales!

- that said like most people she interacts with, she let the loyalists walk all over her

- BUFF AF. when she wasnt felling trees she was arm wrestling in the pubs and could drink anyone under the table. Her weak constitution these days is still not to be taken lightly- I wanna say she got her tattoo in those early 1800s on a dare or something.

- “you cant be BI-(lingual) you have to choose one” nb: you think i wear this flannel all the time just because im a lumberjack, love? :^)

- Really has a problem with asserting herself verbally. I think people really underestimate her or ignore her because she makes it easy for them- she does tend to trail behind everyone else and takes longer to think over things. She doesn’t look as physically imposing as she actually is, and when she opens her mouth I think people tend to critique how she says things rather than listen to what she’s saying. 

- “I’m not a Newfie, I’m a Newbie!!!!” - actual newbie quote

- The exception being when she’s talking to NS- she can rough him up a little or let loose a stream of curses (affectionately!) to make sure he’s aware that she’s going to stand her ground on something. It’s when she’s up in front of a group or in the room with central Canada that she forgets everything she wanted to say. She’s the type of introvert that doesn’t shut up when she’s with the ones she likes and all about small town gossip, and can be really scathing when talking about people she’s having a difference of opinion with.

- idk where exactly she’d choose to live but i think she’d like a sort of off-the-beaten-path sort of place that’s got trees all around that’s just a liiiittle difficult to get to. Of course there’s evidence of clutter everywhere that her fam has left behind so it looks like more people live there than they actually do (and I mean yeah her fam are the ones she CAN say no to but like... why would she have to if they want to drop by to chat and have a cup of tea and her homemade rappie pie.) Her garden is not very maintained, things just grow and curl around the property just enough to suggest “come in” rather than “keep out” for those who are curious enough to care to look. 

- all the bold 1950s fashion though please like... she looks so good and intimidating in it jeezus

- i do legitimately wonder how she felt about a potential Acadian secession in the 70s-80s, it was very hesitant to identify as a ‘nationalist’ movement and I think she’d be very conflicted about the potential of on the one hand embracing part of her identity but on the other hand to the point of also having it separated out... like would she remain as NB and someone new be created or would she form a new Acadia, idk. I feel like it’s something that really gave her a headache from worrying about.
