this is for @cuprun. you know what you did. i take no responsibility.
Joe isn't a TV guy.
Not, like—he watches TV. That's not what he meant. Obviously, he watches TV, he watched Game of Thrones and binged Schitt's Creek and Ted Lasso and he's so excited about season two of Severance and—
Anyway. He meant, he's not supposed to be on TV. It's not what he trained for, it's not what he's used to. Radio is different—the way you describe the game, the way you speak to the play unfolding in front of you, all of it.
So, to say he's nervous is an understatement. Especially when they tell him he's going to be working with Colby Armstrong for this game.
Colby's nice. He's soooo nice. Everyone with the Penguins has been nothing but nice and welcoming and helpful. But Colby is a player—was a player—and he's close with all the big names in the league, he's buddies with everyone, and it makes Joe feel a little...intimidated.
He's just some dork from Chicago. Hopefully he doesn't embarrass himself too badly tonight.
That hope flies out the window the first minute of the game when Joe opens his big fat mouth and tells Colby that he might need his hand held because he's so nervous.
He snaps his mouth shut, cringing as he waits for the inevitable awkward silence, but Colby just nudges him with a sly grin and runs with it.
They settle into something resembling a cadence. Joe's sweating in his suit jacket, but none of the other TV guys took theirs off so he doesn't either. Colby's so good at filling in where Joe drops off, and he's easy to riff with even when Joe freezes up and his whole mind fills with nothing but the buzzing of very loud bees.
He thinks that maybe he'd be doing a better job if the game was anything remotely worth watching.
It's boring. It's two bad teams playing badly, and it's so fucking late that Joe's desperately inhaling coffee out of the little styrofoam cup someone keeps refilling for him whenever he gets a break.
Calling games for Crosby, Malkin, and the Pittsburgh Penguins as a whole is an honor that Joe sometimes still isn't quite sure how he earned, but Malkin's out, and Crosby is pouting about it, and the Pittsburgh Penguins are not exactly bringing their best tonight.
So, his mind wanders. Colby's funny. Colby knows hockey so well. Colby is making him laugh and propping him up and sitting there totally relaxed and looking so handsome in his suit, tossing his water bottle from hand to hand while he squints down at the ice and offers yet another insight that Joe couldn't have picked up on in a million years.
It's thrilling. Joe might be starstruck.
They're talking about...something happening on the ice when Colby says something about some food truck he went to that afternoon. That sets them off on a tangent about food carts, and okay, maybe they should be narrating what's going on down on the ice for the audience, but that's the beauty of TV, isn't it? Anyone watching can see for themselves.
Plus, Joe highly doubts there are many people back in Pittsburgh that are so locked into this particular game that people will complain.
He's watching Colby's hands move as he talks when he opens his mouth and goes insane.
"How many hot dogs do you think you could down at once?"
Colby freezes for a second, and for the first time all night looks Joe head on. Joe holds his breath and waits to get fired on live television.
"...two," Colby says slowly, and the grin that spreads across his face is not comforting at all. "What, are you challenging me? I will dominate."
Joe thinks he squeaks in response. Hopefully the microphone didn't catch that.
Thankfully, the Sharks score right after. Well, no, not thankfully, god of course not, but it means Colby stops looking at him.
By the time the Penguins troop off to yet another loss, Joe is ready to rip his headset off and sprint all the way back to the hotel, taxi cab be damned. But he has to sit and wait until the crew untapes his microphone, and then someone comes by and wipes most of the makeup off his face, and when he tries to make his mistake Colby's waiting for him, slouched against a wall and tapping at his phone, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth.
"Uh," Joe says, coming to a halt.
Colby pockets his phone and raises his eyebrows. "That all you got? Did you use up all your words for the broadcast?"
Joe squeaks again.
Colby's smirk is deadly. "That's fine. I don't mind the silent type. Come on, let me buy you a drink to congratulate you on surviving your first TV broadcast, and maybe we can figure out something else you can do with your mouth if talking isn't on the table."
Joe practically trips over his feet to follow Colby out of the arena.
#gosh i haven't written crackfic in forever.#anyway. thanks for the inspo mwah mwah#hope this is everything you ever dreamed of

Rapunzel
You know those amazing Pony dreams where you find rare and unreleased ponies at a thrift shop or garage sale for like $1 each? Well, I had that happen in real life and the ponies are still here!
Yesterday was the Marysville Toy Show and I had a blast vending it. The promoters really go all out with their themes and ensuring the vendors have a great experience. This year’s theme was GI Joe. Their logo display evoked a military encampment, with a cot and lantern inside one side, a Jeep exiting the other side, a helicopter landing pad, rafting rapids, and smoked shark over a fire pit. And, to top it all off, a paratrooper dropping by to join in the fun. Vendors were given folders stating our name, rank, and location. Inside were custom dog tags with our name on them, the toy show, and “Mission Holy Grail.”

I set up my space and then browsed a little bit. Since my display took nearly the full four hours allotted to set up, I didn’t get much time to really shop and find goodies for myself. I mentally noted a few spots to check in the morning and headed home myself.

The next morning, just before we opened to the early buyers, a friend tipped me off to a table I had somehow missed and I headed over to see what ponies they had. I wasn’t expecting much-- probably overpriced or some fakies. But then, from a distance, I spotted pink with yellow hair and the shine of pink tinsel. I dared to hope and picked up my pace. When I tell you I was shaking when I grabbed that pony, I am not exaggerating in the least. It was Rapunzel, the mail order I nearly had as a kid and my dad never sent in the filled out form with collected pony points. Then I grabbed blue hearts Dazzle Glow. Oh, and is that a pearly Baby Cotton Candy? And pearly Baby Blossom? AND pearly Baby Moondreamer? Wait, that’s ALL the pearly mail order babies! Spunky too! Tropical ponies, and Perfume Puffs and Candy Cane ponies. Gimme all the ponies and nobody pinch me because I like this dream.
I asked the vendor how much and they were all less than $10 each. I gladly took the entire lot and danced back to my booth. I’m still in shock. I never thought I’d be lucky enough to own a Rapunzel after not getting her as a kid.

Mission Holy Grail? Mission accomplished!

What animal do you think the punch out boxers would be?
Okay so these are mostly from vibes and looks but I can explain a little
Mac is a Schipperke, not much reason I just think he would be a dog. This one is small dark & cute and it’s also nicknamed “The Black Devil” which is so funny because look at it. I don’t think it’s particularly aggressive but still just Mac vibes to me.
Seen @/asmoteeth draw Joe as a Roe deer and I wholeheartedly agree
I just think woodpeckers work for Von, specifically Pileated woodpeckers because they almost look like they have mustaches. Plus the drumming they do make me think of him a little
Thank u to my sister for this one 🙏 Disco is a cheetah. I was debating whether to choose a leopard instead cause their build is more like him but I can see Disco more in cheetahs than those guys
King Hippo (But more chill)
Idk what made me choose a Mandarin duck for Hondo but I mean look at it. It’s so him.
I dunno if some of you see Bear As A Bear but I don’t, he’s not really like that for me so I chose a beaver because they’re silly and fat. And they also cut down trees!
Great Tiger
Don is a Painted Redstart, their hair looks so funny and also they fan their tails (Heeyyy what’s one of the props in the Flamenco dance 🤔🤔). If you imagine these guys but kinda bigger this is him to me
Aran Ryan is a hare, I’ve seen him drawn as a rabbit by @/ohshy and I see it but hares look funnier so I went with that
Soda is a bear, kinda struggled with him but bears Are the national Russian animal and I can see him as one that lovessss honey (Winnie the pooh who?)
Bald Bull
@/ohshy also drew Macho as a shark and yeah. Yeah
I went with a moose for Sandman mostly cause of their size but they Can be aggressive you knoww… I do think Sandy is chill otherwise though (Well, at least when he’s not losing to a child)
And bonuses, Ref is a mountain goat because they look alike
Doc… well I’m not actually sure for him. I keep thinking but nothing Really works, but I like walruses and they were one of my contestants for him so I just slapped an image of one on him so he wouldn’t be left out
#Tysm for the ask! This was fun (Feel free to share any of your guys ideas I’d love to hear ;D)#punch out#ask

Nobody asked, but here are some of my personal headcanons for various Lucky Luke characters hehe
Lucky Luke
☆Luke is short for Lucas, but nobody ever calls him that except his mother
☆Luke's father (who wasn't in his life, ditched before he was born) was actually an outlaw (though not a very successful one). Unlike Luke, he was a terrible shot.
☆Luke got Jolly imported from London and initially found Rantanplan as a puppy in Texas (before he became a prison "guard dog")
☆Luke is 24
☆Luke's dream vacation spot is Belgium (which is why his outfit is based off of the Belgian flag 🇧🇪)
☆ Fingers helped Luke to quit smoking (semi-canon I guess because "Fingers" was the first issue where he stopped smoking completely)
☆Luke was born in Colorado, but his true home is ✨️Texas✨️
The Daltons
☆William and Jack are identical twins, although Jack is taller because he ate healthier growing up lol. They both like to confuse other people on who is who and often switch names and pretend to be each other. Even Luke can't keep up with who is who.
☆Joe has NRP2 dwarfism, a rare type of proportional dwarfism. He is about 4' 5" due to this condition, although he has never received an official diagnosis (because it's the 1800s, lol). Averell, on the other hand, is 6' 8" and often has to bend to get through doors.
☆The only food Averell hates is chocolate
☆Joe would never admit it, but he has a hobby for stargazing and often likes to analyze constellations
☆William loves to cheat at cards while Jack prefers to play fair
☆Ages: Joe: 26, Jack and William: 24 and Averell, 22
Billy The Kid
☆Billy's full name is Henry McCarty (just like the real Billy The Kid lol), but he will smack you (or try to at least) if you call him Henry
☆Billy has a secret passion for baking. He loves sweets, especially pastries, and will often make them by the dozen
Fingers
☆Real name is Freddie (he ALWAYS spells it with the "ie", he insists)
☆Always getting his nails done, and he always has on 2 inch blinged out acrylics (another reason why they call him Fingers, lol)
☆Born in the West Indies, specifically Martinique.
☆Fingers is a traveler by heart, so he is always going to and from different countries, his current residence being the United States, his previous being France.
☆Best friends with Pat Poker, they love doing card tricks together
Pat Poker
☆Born and raised in Chicago (pre fire), which is where he learned to play cards. Cheating runs in his blood, as his father, grandfather, cousins, and siblings were also huge card sharks.
☆Builds card houses for fun with his gang
☆When he doesn't cheat, he actually hates poker just because it is too unpredictable for him, lol
☆Favorite colors are pink and purple. He has his office painted pink and has rhinestones with his initials on his gun
Others
☆Phil Defer is like 7 feet tall, even taller than Averell. He is also best friends with Elliot Belt.
☆August Oyster and Calamity Jane secretly would like to befriend each other but would NEVER admit it
☆Waldo Badminton has a blackbelt in jujutsu
☆Mad Jim spent hours in the mirror just trying to get that Lucky Luke combover right lol
☆Ma Dalton and Pa Dalton often went on robbing sprees for their date nights
#lucky luke#bande dessinée#the daltons#averell dalton#pat poker#joe dalton#william dalton#les dalton#jack dalton#august oyster#calamity jane#phil defer#elliot belt#waldo badminton#lucky luke fingers#fingers lucky luke#mad jim#billy the kid#rantanplan#jolly jumper

My posts
Now all my crape myrtles have mildew. Additionally, I have hurt my back yet again and I am scuncht about it. Thus, I’m on muscle relaxers again, so here’s hoping this post is lucid.
Also, I underestimated how many people really, really needed to hear good news about the “my husband and FIL insist I will die in childbirth” woman on AITA back in 2020.

So here's something to ponder. If Shepard were to introduce old Earth anime to the Normandy team, especially the aliens, which anime do you think each squadmate would be into?
In a fictional world where I could imagine all the characters actually being interested enough (because a good chunk of them I just can't imagine them caring or being into it) and just putting aside that I actually really can't see some of them even being into anime of any kind;
Garrus: At first my thought would be something like Space Battleship Yamato, but I think he might actually be more into something like Rose of Versailles and no, not because I like it. But I think the internal conflict of the show of loyalty to the crown both as duty but also personal connection versus duty to the people and the desire to uphold justice would be something he'd be super into.
Wrex: Ashita no Joe. Easy choice.
Grunt: Ginga. I don't think there are any anime focusing on sharks so seeing dogs fight bears in the wilderness would probably do the trick. Otherwise DBZ would be the most obvious choice.
Liara: Cheating with this one by saying "Mysterious Cities of Gold" which is more a French show than an anime but is JUST anime enough to count, I think. Obvious reasons as to why are obvious.
Tali: Macross (the first one). If there was an anime adaptation of Pride and Prejudice I would pick that because Tali is a GIANT romantic who 100% reads fanfiction nad has even said in-game she's going to send Shepard gifsets of "Fleet and Flotilla". So Macross with its complicated romance aboard a giant spaceship and being unable to return to Earth will probably hit all the right buttons for her.
Legion is difficult because I can only really see him being into Isekai because he likes fantasy but that's a modern genre
As for Mordin, I don't know if there are any anime that would appeal to him or any of his interests.
Javik: Would hate everything

Headcanon Prompt; Punch out Boxers but if they have freaky features (I.E. Tails, Wings, Horns, etc) from some sort of curse or something that makes them more than just human.
1 am headcanons lets fucking gooo, also made up a story for how they got it
Glass joe - a dog tail used to signify emotion, got it from a curse that aran spread on
Von Kaiser - reindeer legs, got it from a failed magic trick tiger tried to do
Disco Kid - a 2nd pair of eyes (think of something spider-like for shape) that he got because he held on to a cursed relic that he thought looked cool
King Hippo - Tusks, it appeared on him after he ate a strange tasting fruit, he claims it tasted like a cucumber with sugar on it
Piston Hondo - a narwhal horn, it appeared after he hunted a "particularly tasty looking" fish that he made into sushi, sad that it tore through his headband
Bear Hugger - claws, got it from ms bear after she accidentally scratched him a bit too hard
Great Tiger - tiger ears!! Got it after he over-used his magic and it put on a curse on him while he tried to do a magic trick
Don Flamenco - wings, got it through the magic gem mishap that Tiger caused, pissed off about it since he cant wear gloves properly now
Aran Ryan - Wolf ears (omg werewolf era) that he got by being bitten by a suspiciously big stray dog
Soda Popinski - a fox tail, got it after one of his soda makers tried out a new ingredient
Bald Bull - horns (classic) after the universe decided that he should get bull horns if he wants to act like a bull
Super Macho Man - a shark tail, got it after eating some of hondo's sushi, hondo is pissed off about it, not because of the shark tail but because THAT WAS HIS FOOD!!
Mr Sandman - spider legs, got it randomly after he thought "yo what if i had spider legs" And got his question answered

Care to tell some facts about the ROs?
Fun or serious? I'll do fun little tidbits. Hard hitting angsty facts later, when you least expect it aye 🤌🏼 (this is me trying not to get too angsty at once because that's what I usually doooo)
Mason
On a first name basis both at the clinic in town and the hospital in the city. No self-preservation instincts. Zero. It's actually saved a lot of other people, houses, and animals, so bonus points for that. The nurses still look unamused when he comes through.
Does not trust roosters. Will never get a rooster for the ranch. Won't be caught dead near one of those feathered devils. (He's not afraid of rooster. He's not. Please believe him.)
Has a real hard time saying no to people and it almost got him unintentionally engaged (TWICE) before his friends were like hold up wtf dude. Alcohol might've been involved during one of these moments. Boy gets silly when he's had mezcal.
Alice
Like spice? Not as much as Alice you don't, she could eat a Carolina Reaper and go for another in half a minute. It freaks people out. Don't eat the chili at the potluck if you treasure your insides.
Has the most amazing memory. Forgot what you did on June 18th, 2016? She remembers. Need a reminder what to do five months from now? Personal calendar, let the lady know. It's a curse of you don't want to relive drunken shenanigans.
Total dog person. Sheep are great, but dogs is where it's at. You'll always catch her bringing one or two of her pups to the bar on slow weekdays. She owns many. Like 12 many, and they're all vital for the sheep farm. Absolutely.
Judge
Always, always has to sit with his face towards the exit(s) and back against the wall, otherwise he'll be tense enough to feel like solid rock if touched. He'll deal with not facing a door though. Just prepare for extra grouch.
His nickname used to be Joe. Joe. No one uses it anymore, for their own good. If you really want to burn bridges (or get the coldest glare), start quoting Don't Fuck With Joe by The Blackwater Fever.
Don't go hiking with him, whatever you do. This is a fella who smashes those long distance trails for fun, and has gone out for weeks and even months on end during extended vacations. 100 miles minimum to make the big lug take a relaxed breath.
Sadie
A living, breathing lie detector. She has a deep, intense interest in body language analysis, and listens to tonal changes so hard it looks like she's lost in though. But there's a very, very slim chance for anyone to lie to her and get away with it, which is a freaky skill for a lawyer.
Has never touched an animal bigger than her. Sure she's seen a horse, a cow, a bull, but she'll keep her feet firmly planted on pavement while the animals are out there in the pasture. Equal minding of own businesses.
No one plays poker with Ms. Sadie because they always lose. If the lawyer thing won't work out, she definitely has a future as a card shark, professional players better shake in their boots. Don't watch her shuffle the deck too closely. Or ask why she knows card tricks.
#wcv answered#oh hey look at that it's meeee lol#drafted this and forgot to post in the haste to leave for my adventures#anyway hi hi i'm almost home#thanks for the ask although i'm darned late on the uptake oofs#ch: mace#ch: alice#ch: judge#ch: sadie

The tiny pink house was pretty much empty. And run-down and dark, since the electricity had been shut off. Nevertheless, someone was trying to burglarize it, a caller told 911 well after midnight on a Sunday in Montgomery, Alabama.
The police called in a K-9 handler and his dog, Niko, to search 3809 Cresta Circle. The dog lunged, found a man and bit down, according to court records. It took almost two minutes for the handler to pull the dog off. And before long, their suspect, a 51-year-old Black man, bled to death. The dog had torn an artery in his groin.
The man was Joseph Lee Pettaway, and his family says he was no burglar. He got in trouble for bad checks and served time years ago, but was now taking care of his 87-year-old mother, Lizzie Mae, and helping to repair the pink house in her neighborhood, they said; he had a key and permission to sleep there.
Joseph Pettaway’s sister, Jacqueline, comforts their mother, Lizzie Mae Pettaway. Joseph died in July of 2018 in Montgomery, Alabama, after being bitten by a police dog.Joe Songer/AL.com
The family is suing the city, seeking damages and information about what happened. “I never thought a dog would end up killing anybody, especially a trained dog,” said Walter Pettaway, Joe’s brother. The family also wants public release of the police bodycam video from July 8, 2018, that is described in court documents.
The city is fighting to keep the video from going public, arguing in court that it would cause “annoyance, embarrassment” for officers who were acting in good faith and could end up “facilitating civil unrest.” Officials did not respond to requests for comment.
Police dog bites are rarely fatal. But in other ways, the case of Joseph Pettaway is not unusual. These dogs, whose jaws and teeth are strong enough to punch through sheet metal, often produce severe injuries. Police employ them not only in emergencies, but also for low-level, non-violent incidents. The dogs bite thousands of Americans each year, including innocent bystanders, police officers, even their own handlers. And there is little oversight, nationally or in the states, of how police departments use them.
These are some of the findings of an investigation by The Marshall Project, with AL.com, IndyStar and the Invisible Institute in Chicago. We obtained dog-bite data from police departments around the country, including the agencies in the 20 largest U.S. cities. Our reporters also examined more than 140 serious cases nationwide, and reviewed thousands of pages of documents, including excessive force lawsuits, department policies, arrest reports and medical studies. We looked at scores of videos of police dog bites. We spoke with victims and their lawyers, law enforcement officials, former and current trainers and other experts.
Here’s more of what we found:
Though our data shows dog bites in nearly every state, some cities use biting dogs far more often than others. Police in Chicago almost never deploy dogs for arrests and had only one incident from 2017 to 2019. Washington had five. Seattle had 23. New York City, where policy limits their use mostly to felony cases, reported 25. By contrast, Indianapolis had more than 220 bites, and Los Angeles reported more than 200 bites or dog-related injuries, while Phoenix had 169. The Sheriff’s Department in Jacksonville, Florida, had 160 bites in this period.
Police dog bites can be more like shark attacks than nips from a family pet, according to experts and medical researchers. A dog chewed on an Indiana man’s neck for 30 seconds, puncturing his trachea and slicing his carotid artery. A dog ripped off an Arizona man’s face. A police dog in California took off a man’s testicle. Dog bites cause more hospital visits than any other use of force by police, according to a 2008 academic analysis of 30 departments.
Many people bitten were unarmed, accused of non-violent crimes or weren't suspects at all. Court records show cases often start as minor incidents—a problem with a license plate, a claim of public urination, a man looking for a lost cat. Although some departments, like Seattle, Oakland, California, and St. Paul, Minnesota, now have strict criteria about when dogs can bite, many continue to give officers wide discretion.
Some dogs won’t stop biting and must be pulled off by a handler, worsening injuries. Although training experts said dogs should release a person after a verbal command, we found dozens of cases where handlers had to yank dogs off, hit them on the head, choke them or use shock collars.
Men are the most common targets of police dog bites—and studies suggest that in some places, victims have been disproportionately Black. Investigations into the police department in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have both found that dogs bit non-White people almost exclusively. Police dog bites sent roughly 3,600 Americans to emergency rooms every year from 2005 to 2013, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine; almost all were male, and Black men were overrepresented.
For many bite victims, there’s little accountability or compensation. Federal civil rights laws don’t typically cover innocent bystanders. In many parts of the country, criminal suspects can’t bring federal claims if they plead guilty or are convicted of a crime related to the biting incident. And even when victims can bring cases, lawyers say they struggle because jurors tend to love police dogs—something they call the Lassie effect.
Police dogs have a highly charged history in the United States, especially in the South, where they were used against enslaved people and, in the 1960s, civil rights protesters.
How Dogs Were Used as Weapons in North America’s History
French colonizers used hundreds of hounds against enslaved people who rebelled during the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), according to Tyler Parry, assistant professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Nevada, and Charlton W. Yingling, Assistant Professor at University of Louisville. An 1805 engraving shows trained bloodhounds attacking a Black Haitian family. Archive Photos/Getty Images

But police departments that use dogs said the K-9s are essential tools for finding fleeing suspects, and for searching dark, narrow spaces for hidden dangers. That makes them crucial for officer safety.
Not every suspect who runs or hides or is not complying with commands will try to injure an officer, said Deputy Chief Josh Barker of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. But, he said, "In a lot of the instances, we're using that K-9 as a tool because we simply don't know.”
When police use dogs properly, injuries should be minor and require little treatment, handlers, trainers and experts said. The dogs are trained to create puncture wounds, but little else. The wounds should not involve tearing flesh, and the bite shouldn’t last long—seconds, not minutes.
The dogs are “not taught to rip, they’re not taught to tear, they’re not taught to maim,” said Kenneth Licklider, who has been training and selling police dogs for decades. Licklider owns Vohne Liche Kennels in Indiana, which supplies dogs and trains their handlers.

And with training and supervision, the dogs bite only a fraction of the times they are used, officials said. That’s a hard statement to prove, because few departments keep standardized data. Many of those that responded to our requests for records did not provide information on deployments, and when they did it was incomplete and inconsistent.
As a spokesman for the Jacksonville sheriff noted, “With policies varying among agencies, the number of engagements cannot be accurately compared.”
But some attorneys said the law should treat police dogs as lethal weapons. “I'd put being attacked by a dog just below being shot,” said Hank Sherrod, who has represented dog bite victims in Alabama.
Law enforcement agencies employ about 15,000 dogs for everything from finding lost children to sniffing out drugs, according to the U.S. Police Canine Association, a professional group. But no countrywide database tracks police dogs, the number of bites or who is bitten. There are no national requirements for dog handlers.
Handling dogs is more art than science, some in the business say. “The handler’s personality will go right down that leash,” said Ernie Burwell, a former canine handler for the Los Angeles County Sheriff who now testifies as an expert witness in excessive force cases. “If the handler’s an idiot, the dog will be, too.”
The lack of regulation worries some experts.
“It’s just sort of the Wild West when it comes to these dogs,” said Christy Lopez, a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center who previously focused on policing and civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice. She recalled speaking to a young Black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, who’d been curled up in a closet when a police dog gnawed on his arm.
“In Ferguson, I realized this was not a thing that needed to be reformed,” Lopez said. “It was a thing that needed to end.”
The Police Executive Research Forum, a prominent law enforcement think tank, recently called for clearer national standards to ensure all agencies have protocols for canine use.
Police officers said they are already careful about using dogs.
“A dog bite, it’s a violent encounter,” said Patrick McKean, trainer for the Mobile Police Department in Alabama. “The dog’s hurting somebody. We’re not going to just do that just for any little reason.”
Trainers say bites are worse when people don’t follow orders—when they try to run or fight back. But many videos we reviewed show people screaming in terror or flailing around, even as the handler yells at them to stop.
“It’s really hard for someone not to move when they’re bitten, and the more they move, the more they’re bitten,” said Ann Schiavone, a law professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh who is an expert in animal law.
Take the case of Patrick Gibbons, a White 47-year-old who sells golf supplies. On May 5, 2019, he flagged down a golf-cart taxi in the Old Town district in Scottsdale, Arizona. After Gibbons demanded that the driver go faster and even tried to push the accelerator himself, the driver got out. Gibbons took off (at 15 mph) in the cart. The driver called 911, telling the dispatcher Gibbons was unarmed but drunk.

A swarm of patrol cars responded while Gibbons, wearing shorts and flip flops, laughed and gave police the finger. After they punctured the cart’s tires to stop it, Gibbons put his hands up. Then, an officer released the patrol dog, police video shows.
For almost two minutes, the dog chewed on Gibbons’ back and side. Police said Gibbons was “flinging the K-9 from side to side,” according to an internal affairs report, and they fired non-lethal weapons at him.
“I couldn’t move without feeling some sort of pain,” Gibbons said. “There’s still stiffness. Now I just tell people I was attacked by a shark.”
Gibbons received a $100,000 settlement from the city for his injuries, but said he’s dissatisfied that criminal and internal investigations cleared officers of any wrongdoing. Gibbons said he took a plea deal for driving while intoxicated and stealing the golf cart, spending 36 days in jail and five months on home arrest.

A Scottsdale police spokesman said officers received the call as a reported carjacking and believed they were responding to a violent felony. He said Gibbons also refused police demands to stop the golf cart. If officers realized the true situation, their response would have been “wholly and completely different,” said Sgt. Brian Reynolds.
“We’re not out just siccing dogs on people just because they’re drunk,” he said. “Absolutely not.”
Some of the most serious injuries happen when handlers struggle to make dogs let go.
In Sonoma County, California, sheriff’s deputies responded to a caller who claimed a man had a gun. They used a Taser on Jason Anglero-Wyrick, a 35-year-old Black man. After he was on the ground, video shows, they set a dog on him—and had a hard time getting it to stop attacking. Anglero-Wyrick ended up with a fist-sized hole in his calf, his lawyer said, and spent weeks in the hospital. He did not have a weapon.
Anglero-Wyrick’s family put a video of the incident on YouTube, his lawyer said, because they wanted the public to see what happened.

“If that video hadn’t been posted, nobody would know about Jason’s case,” said his lawyer, Izaak Schwaiger.
A Sonoma County sheriff’s spokeswoman said the case is still under internal investigation and referred a reporter to a video of the incident posted to the agency’s Facebook page.
Even when they have suffered terrible injuries, people bitten by police dogs can find it very hard to collect damages. Take Deborah Hooper, a White woman who used to work as an accountant. According to court records, on May 9, 2006, a security guard at a drugstore in the San Diego suburbs caught her stealing a nail file and a couple of lipsticks. A sheriff’s deputy issued her a citation for petty theft, then took her to the parking lot and searched her car.
The deputy said he found a drug scale and what looked like methamphetamine, and tried to arrest her. As they struggled, the deputy pushed a special button on his belt, releasing his German Shepherd, court records show. The dog latched onto Hooper’s head, ripping off large chunks of her scalp and biting down to her skull.
Fourteen years later, Hooper is still undergoing surgeries. Doctors grafted skin from her thigh onto her head. They filled water balloons and stuck them under her remaining scalp to stretch the skin. She said she became a hermit and has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder.
She is also still in court, reliving the incident over and over again. She had to battle to get the right to sue for excessive use of force in federal court because she had pleaded guilty to resisting arrest; an appeals court eventually ruled in her favor. Her second trip to federal court ended with a hung jury.
This spring, she was back in court again, in a third trial that also ended in a hung jury. “The dog was just ripping my head back and forth,” she told jurors in San Diego. “There was blood everywhere.”
The Sheriff’s Office and the deputy said she lunged for his gun, which she denied. At the most recent trial in March, Melissa Holmes, the lawyer who represents the agency, said the officer “did what he had to do to protect himself and to protect the public.”
A spokesman for San Diego County did not respond to a request for comment.
A fourth trial was scheduled for this month but has been postponed.

One hurdle for people seeking redress is qualified immunity, which in most cases shields government employees, including police, from liability when they are doing their jobs. In its last term, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up a legal challenge to the doctrine in a lawsuit over a police dog bite. A Tennessee man, Alexander Baxter, had sued alleging that local police used a dog after he had surrendered with his hands in the air.
Outside of the courtroom, some communities are pushing for change.
Elected officials in Spokane have proposed making it harder for the police to use dogs after bodycam footage from last year showed an officer shoving a dog through a truck window and watching it chew on a man inside as he screamed. Police leaders concluded the officer acted within department policy.
“It seemed like the officers essentially used the dog to punish him,” said Breean Beggs, a civil rights lawyer and president of the Spokane City Council. “If that's policy, then there is something wrong with the policy."
The department did not respond to requests for comment.

In Salt Lake City, officials suspended the canine unit after a video showed police releasing a dog on a Black man, even though he was on his knees, hands in the air. In a rare move, prosecutors filed criminal charges of second-degree aggravated assault against the dog handler.
On Sept. 25, the city said that a review found a “pattern of abuse of power” when police used dogs, and moved to examine earlier incidents.
The Salt Lake City Police Department said in a statement that it is taking the criminal charges and a report by the Civilian Review Board into account as it works on its internal investigation.
Change is also underway in Walnut Creek, California, after officers released a dog on a demonstrator at a recent Black Lives Matter protest.
When marchers snarled highway traffic, a SWAT team released canisters of tear gas. Joseph Malott, a Black architecture student who joined the June 1 protest in his hometown, said he picked up one canister and tossed it away—in the direction of the cops.

Then he was face-down on the pavement. A police dog’s teeth sliced through his T-shirt and sank into his back, tearing his flesh and poking holes through his skin. He felt chewing on his leg and hand.
“It felt like I was being eaten,” Malott said recently. “They literally had to pull the dog off me.”
Public outcry about police actions at the protest prompted city leaders to promise that law enforcement wouldn’t use dogs at future demonstrations.
Charges against Malott were dropped, and he no longer needs crutches or a cane. But he still has physical and mental scars, he said. “It’s stuff that will be with me for the rest of my life.”
