I want to make clear
If Papa Essiedu takes the role of Severus Snape, I will not tolerate any racism, cruelty, or unwarranted criticism of him as a person or as an actor on this blog. However you feel about the casting fitting the character or not, harassment of the actor doing the best to fill the role is never going to be supported here. Nor will any negative references to him as a person or as a black man be tolerated.
I will however be critical of actors who support JKR going forward without addressing her transphobic remarks. That goes for any actor in the series. We are already on shaky ground engaging with the series publicly at all.

I do not have the expertise or knowledge to join in the chorus of people who are accusing JK Rowling of Holocaust denial. I’ve done part 1) of my goals with this piece and explained why people are making the accusation; she was objectively wrong about a historical fact in which the Nazis burnt research into trans healthcare. But any analysis as to whether this constitutes Holocaust denialism is, in my view, best left to the experts in that field. My expertise is in transphobia and the way it operates. I think JK Rowling’s social media activity over the last two days is an interesting case study into how bigotry constantly and confidently bullshits itself into believing it has successfully reasserted the narrative. When, in reality, any real inspection causes it to quickly fall apart. Throughout these tweets Rowling seemingly can’t give a direct response to anything put to her. The tweet that kicked off people making these accusations is unmistakeably her disagreeing with established historical fact about the burning of Institut für Sexualwissenschaft’s research. When presented with citations by Caraballo and others demonstrating the established historical facts regarding the burning of Hirschfeld’s Institute JK Rowling’s responses get increasingly further from the point. She moves the goalposts as facts are repeated to her, adding more conditions and hoops trans people need to prove and jump through for her to accept she was wrong in that first tweet. When this fails, she changes tactic to discrediting Hirschfeld, as if his shitty beliefs somehow make the burning of his Institute – and research into trans healthcare it contained – null and void. Then, you get the ending; the real anxiety the she was expressing reveals itself. In my view, this is demonstrated via the tweets where Rowling expresses the belief that trans people are inserting ourselves into history and centering things around us all the time. To my eyes, its just another form of the common anti-LGBTQIA+ trope of claiming we’re asking for too much in some regard. None of this was about historical facts. It wasn’t about the Nazis. It wasn’t about the Holocaust or any of its victims. It wasn’t about the research Magnus Hirschfeld led. It wasn’t about what a few random Twitter accounts said. It wasn’t about the lives of transgender people in early 1900s Germany. It was, in my opinion, just a bigot being upset that trans people aren’t quiet about our erasure from history. All just one big billionaire whine that we are asking for too much by insisting that our histories aren’t erased.

hey now, she can be pitiable AND awful. people contain multitudes.
I'm not going to say that JKR is pitiable, because she's not, but I do think that a system of perverse incentives and social rewards have set up a sort of self-destructive feedback loop in her brain. I think that a lot of people are trapped in such loops; I think that encouraging them in users is a major part of social media's business model.
I think it's almost impossible to be happy in such a state.

Alright, I'm sick of seeing TERFisms on my dash, so here's a handy list of TERF dogwhistles and talking points to think about before you reblog a post.
I've seen a few of these before, but it doesn't hurt to make more. Especially when we're seeing a lot of radfem rhetoric popping up in LGBT spaces from people who might not know better.
SCREENNAMES: these are terms that commonly appear in radfem usernames across the web
rad or radical
fem or femme
vulva, clit, uterus, womb, ovary, vagina, etc.
febfem
anything along the lines of "angry woman"
xx or chromosomes
wombyn, wimmin, womyn, etc.
LGB
feminist
BIOS: things that show up in radfem bios
♀ or ⚢
febfem
female separatist
female, human female, adult human female
xx
something along the lines of "the scary feminist you were warned about"; being an angry woman, being sick of being silenced, being an evil woman, being an angry lesbian
detrans (NOTE: detrans people are absolutely not always transphobic)
dysphoric female
males/men do not interact
LGB✂️
misandrist
feminist (NOTE: again, very few feminists are actually terfs, but this is commonly in terf bios alongside some of these other terms)
TERMS: terms that radfems use in their circles
TIM - trans-identified male, a way of saying transfems, trans women, and other trans people
TIF - trans-identified female, same as above but the other way around, less commonly seen
DSD - disorder of sexual development, a way to avoid saying intersex and to categorize intersex people as "still male or female" (you might see "males with DSD" or "females with DSD" for example)
females or males instead of women and men
alternatively, women and males to dehumanize men
"peaking" or "peaked" - referring to becoming radicalized as a radfem or TERF
womyn, wombyn, wimmin, wo**n, and any other spelling that takes "man" out of the term woman
mentally ill men/women
sex-based oppression
gender critical
"TIRF" - trans-inclusive radical feminist (don't be fooled by the name, they're very much not)
TRA - trans rights activist, derogatory
sex-based rights
female separatism/"women's land"
WBW - womyn-born womyn
autistic girls/children
troon - (ridiculous) slur for trans people
RHETORIC: general ideological themes in radfem rhetoric
men are inherently more violent than women
women don't or rarely rape men
(woman on woman rape is ignored by almost all radfems)
being nonbinary is a way to "stop being" your assigned sex while still acting as your birth sex
lesbians are not attracted to men/penises and can never have sex with men/penises (otherwise, you're bisexual)
men can and will never be lesbians
there is no such thing as a bi lesbian, only lesbians and bisexuals. labels are rigid and sex-based
all of the world's suffering is driven by men
women would be better off separate
an all-female society is utopia
sex is binary, and intersex people are "glitches" or "still male or female but DisorderedTM"
men should expect to be feared by women
female/female relationships are safer and more pure than straight or gay male relationships
men and women are more different than similar
intersex people should not be allowed in sports
intersex people and trans men are never in men's sports
terrible world events wouldn't have happened if women were in charge
men are stupid and aggressive
being a man is not a positive thing
men's problems are lesser than women's
penises are disgusting and vaginas and vulvas are beautiful
trans women are performing at being girls
trans men see themselves as above lesbians
attraction is sex-based
porn is rape
porn is inherently violent
watching porn makes you predisposed to inflicting abuse
BDSM is inherently violent and misogynistic
transitioning children (whether socially or medically) are being abused
"bitch" and "cunt" are slurs against women
only gay men can say faggot and only lesbian women can say dyke
When you see a few or more of these together, RUN! It's a terf.

I bought the wizard game because all the troons were making a big fuss about it. jk rowling did nothing wrong.
Okay look, I need you to take a step back from yourself and your in-group and really see that message, because to a normal person it's nonsensical. I acknowledge that you are trying to insult me, but it's not hitting the mark because "troon" just sounds like something a scifi character would use as currency. This is like when incels were calling women "femoids" like that's supposed to mean something. Get better writers.

TBH being a fan of Harry Potter should honestly be more embarrassing than having a piss kink. Like, good for you if you wanna enjoy it in the privacy of your own home but don't pretend that other people are ok with having it brought up in front of them with no warning and please for the love of the gods do not discuss it at work.
And I say more embarrassing than having a piss kink because at least financially supporting kink gear doesn't put money in the hands of organisations trying to decimate the few protections trans people have from bigotry.

the thing everybody and I mean everybody needs to understand is that you cant succumb to bigotry and dehumanization even when youre dealing with the worst, most terrible people. you cant. you cant let yourself be convinced that anybody "deserves" it. you can criticize and even hate people without throwing bigotry and dehumanization around. and you need to. you need to. I am not saying you need to defend horrible people because god im not but I am saying you need to be aware of when youre spouting bigotry and dehumanizing rhetoric and you need to be critical of yourself, and of others, because you could be the most left-leaning person around but you are not immune to being a misogynist, a racist, a homophobe, a transphobe, an ableist, any kind of bigot just so you can throw insults and feel like the bigger person

Note
If JK Rowling wasn't transphobic the Left would be stanning her right now.
yeah, no one would really care. they knew about her racism and didn’t care until she was openly transphobic, and it’s still an afterthought. truly do not understand the bigotry hierarchy.

Nothing drives me up the wall like “progressive” cis people who justify, minimize, defend, and/or equivocate about supporting JKR and Harry Potter. It costs you nothing to NOT do something and NOT make those comments acting like trans people are stupid or overreacting. It’s disgusting, especially how many of them get on their high horse and act like they’re so profound and smart for being beyond trans people’s measly concerns about systemic oppression.
