Mitsubishi A5M

I have been somewhat obsessed with this historic airplane design since I first saw it in a video game and thought it looked so sleek and pretty. The Mitsubishi A5M is the predecessor to the more famous A6M 'Zero'. It was designed by legendary aviation engineer Jiro Horikoshi. Prioritizing aerodynamics & eliminating weight over armor & weapons, Horikoshi's airplane designs were more for the aviation purists. He opposed Japan's escalation into WW2 despite designing the aircraft that enabled them to do so. "But now, bereft of any strong government move to seek a diplomatic way out, we are being driven to doom. Japan is being destroyed." He wrote in his journals upon hearing news of the Pearl Harbor attack. His story is told in the Hayao Miyazaki film 'The Wind Rises'.
