i am also very influenced by older movies because im a huge movie fan! i collect video tapes, especially of exploitation films

i think a lot of the "style thing" just comes from drawing a whole lot and naturally finding your favorite ways and most effective shorthands for features/objects/whatever. like me, i really love simple-looking cartoons, horror, and older shoujo comics. of course i wish i could draw like miura, but i cant! lol

the most important thing i think i have learned about drawing comics is that thinking about the way the image will "read" is like vitally important. even if maybe it isn't the most realistic way to draw something, or i have to sacrifice certain details i wanted to draw in, i will pick 100 percent of the time the version of my drawing that reads better and easier when i look at the page as a whole. if that makes sense? ♥️ it is probably not noticeable to anyone but me, but for example, i will switch which side of joey's mouth his scar is on depending on what looks better to me.

i think maybe other people plan better than i do, because all i do is write a pages worth of script at a time, think about what i want to be in each panel and then layout the boxes in a way that seems appropriate to me. i sketch, then i do the lettering, and then i ink. i hate lettering!!! but i don't like how the comics look if i don't handwrite the words, so i suffer. it's embarrassing but doing the lettering takes me literally an hour usually lol. i actually had to take after school classes as a kid to correct my pen grip, because i held it like a caveman and people wanted me to not do that haha

I’ve seen many of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, but I had not seen “The Wind Rises” so this was an interesting watch for me. Even though the film is set during World War II, it doesn’t show warfare or showcase a narrative of the victims of the war. I honestly appreciated this aspect of the movie because we’ve been watching a lot of films that only focus on the atrocities and violence of war. At its core, the film serves as a profound exploration of love, ambition, and the human spirit, inviting viewers to reflect on the complexities of life and the pursuit of one's dreams. One of the central themes of "The Wind Rises" is the power of imagination and creativity in the face of adversity. Through the character of Jiro Horikoshi, Miyazaki portrays a passionate visionary whose love for aviation fuels his relentless pursuit of excellence. Despite facing numerous obstacles and setbacks, Jiro remains unwavering in his dedication to designing the perfect airplane. His unwavering commitment serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of creativity in shaping the world around us. However, beneath its surface beauty lies a deeper exploration of the human condition. Miyazaki- The Wind Rises

The Wind Rises is another Studio Ghibli film that is set in post-WWI and pre-WWII. The movie hows made almost 100 years after this time in the 2010s.

Unlike other postwar anime viewed, the message in the movie isn't to speak about the lives lost in war or to narrate victims' lives during the war. It was more like a story about science and a man's [Jiro Horikoshi] story about his inventions and his life.

Even his life, it was not focused on what he lost, with the great exception of losing his wife and his many failures, but focused on what he was creating. This includes the unsuccessful inventions that he had to learn from. He repeats to himself and Caproni, his idol, that his dream is to build beautiful planes. Does it mean planes are beautiful and he wants to make them even more beautiful? Or are they ugly and he is transforming them? Or is the creation process what makes a plane beautiful? We know he and Caproni did not like making planes for the war, but it's because of the war he was able to learn so much about other planes and gain experience. His design wouldn't be significant if there was not a great demand for them from the government.

Random things I noticed: The machine sounds like a human was sputtering and blowing into the mic. Like any time the planes were about to fly and the turbines were spinning, it sounded like a person. An Italian character sounds like an Italian immigrant speaking English, which makes sense, but it reminds me of the Russian characters in the English dub of Yuri on Ice!.

The boss looks like the mayor from the Lorax movie. Short, bowl cut, old (middle age), all talk, and I didn't think anyone, even his direct subordinates, liked him as a boss, but we see he is just really passionate about his job and maybe takes time to get used to.

The movie title is based on a quote in a French poem that the movie refers to a few times. When Jiro is with Naoko, the wind suddenly rushes and rises, blowing objects up into the air like the planes Jiro has been trying to create, and they lead to the other. Yet, it is Naoko who no longer lives. Perhaps the "you must live" refers to also Naoko herself as she is about to die, she still chooses to push forward and live her life to the fullest with Jiro. Only in Jiro's dreams does the umbrella fall to the ground, signifying Naoko's passing away.

I also realized wind rising is usually how a plane can rise from the ground. If I remember correctly, the wind pushes the wings up and down, but whenever Caponi asks Jiro if the wind is rising, he always says yes, implying no matter what, he must continue to keep living. I don't know if this choice to live is a post-war message, but the visuals and imagination is very compelling.
