Más de 21 pulgadas se registró tras históricas lluvias, y han convertido la rica región agrícola del Valle del Río Grande en un escenario de emergencia donde equipos de rescate continúan respondiendo a llamadas de auxilio, mientras las autoridades texanas confirman al menos tres fallecidos en el condado de Hidalgo y oficiales mexicanos reportan la muerte por ahogamiento de un anciano de 83 años en Reynosa.

Las intensas tormentas que han azotado la región fronteriza dejaron viviendas inundadas hasta la altura de las rodillas, vehículos abandonados en carreteras convertidas en ríos y miles de personas sin electricidad, obligando a la suspensión de clases en más de 20 distritos escolares y al cierre completo del Aeropuerto Internacional Valley en Harlingen, donde se cancelaron todos los vuelos programados para este viernes.

«La cama es lo único seco en este momento, porque los sofás están empapados, todo está empapado», declaró Jionni Ochoa, de 46 años, desde su hogar en Palm Valley, cerca de Harlingen, mientras esperaba ser rescatado con el agua alcanzando sus rodillas, tras experimentar cómo el líquido comenzaba a salir por los tomacorrientes eléctricos durante la noche anterior.

Las autoridades advirtieron que la devastación causada por las tormentas, que establecieron récords en partes del Valle del Río Grande, apenas comienza a vislumbrarse, mientras en México cientos de personas buscaron refugio temporal y videos en redes sociales mostraban a personal militar vadeando aguas que les llegaban hasta el pecho en zonas completamente anegadas de las ciudades fronterizas más afectadas.

Emma Alaniz, residente de una colonia rural con infraestructura subdesarrollada, describió su situación como estar «en una isla», resignada a no poder salir de su hogar debido a las inundaciones que hacían imposible utilizar su automóvil pequeño, ejemplificando el aislamiento que experimentan miles de habitantes en ambos lados de la frontera ante la magnitud del desastre natural que ha paralizado la región.

Perjuangan Sultan Hasanuddin yang terkenal adalah menolak monopoli perdagangan yang dilakukan oleh VOC Belanda. Selama masa pemerintahannya, dia berhasil menggagalkan rencana Belanda untuk menguasai Kerajaan Islam Gowa dan menyatukan kerajaan-kerajaan kecil dalam perlawanan melawan penjajah. Karena keteguhannya, Sultan Hasanuddin dikenal sebagai "Ayam Jantan dari Timur" atau De Haantjes van Het Osten oleh Belanda.

Sultan Hasanuddin meninggal pada 12 Juni 1670 dan dimakamkan di Katangka, Kabupaten Gowa.

Berkat kegigihan Sultan Hasanuddin mempertahankan kehormatan negerinya, dia diberi gelar Pahlawan Nasional. Dia angkat sebagai Pahlawan Nasional dengan Surat Keputusan Presiden Republik Indonesia tanggal 6 November 1973 No. 887/TK/Tahun 1973.
