Up through the 1950's, it was common to have multiple versions of a popular song on the market, simultaneously. "Ballerina" was one of those songs. 4 versions were found on Billboard's pop charts in early 1948. Vaughn Monroe had the most popular version, spending 10 weeks at #1. Bing Crosby and Jimmy Dorsey also cracked the top 10, while Buddy Clark's version peaked at #5, the 2nd most popular version. Cashbox ranked records differently, lumping all popular versions, together for 1 chart position. On their chart, "Ballerina" also spent 10 weeks at #1, with Monroe and Clark's versions showing all 10 weeks, while Crosby's was ranked for 9 of the 10. More on Buddy Clark; he's virtually forgotten, now, but in the late 1940's, he was one of pop music's top vocalists, scoring 3 #1 hits on Billboard in 1947-48. Sadly, in the midst of his popularity, he lost his life in a plane crash in October, 1949. #buddyclark #vaughnmonroe #bingcrosby #jimmydorsey #ballerina #bigband #swing #jazz #radio #classic #oldies #vinyl #music #song #vinyljunkie #45rpm #instagood #lovethis #recordcollector #bestsong #goodmusic #recordcollecting #singer #78rpm #vinylcollection #records (at Asheville, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuDJyMVgRxF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18e2q2czawcih

“TANGERINE” - JIMMY DORSEY [1942]
youtube
"Tangerine" is a popular song. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard.
It was introduced to a broad audience in the 1942 movie, The Fleet's In, produced by Paramount Pictures, directed by Schertzinger just before his death, and starring Dorothy Lamour, William Holden, Eddie Bracken, singer Cass Daley, and Betty Hutton in her feature film debut.
The song portrays a fictitious South American woman with universally recognized allure: "When she dances by, / Señoritas stare / And caballeros sigh.” As one of Mercer's biographers explained the initial popularity: "Latin America, the one part of the world not engulfed in World War II, became a favorite topic for songs and films for Americans who wanted momentarily to forget about the conflagration."
