Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love - Earl's Court 05-24-1975 Part 17

Okay, listen up people, Zep-heads, Jimbert shippers especially, because this video is un-fucking-believable in so many ways, and all of them good ways and I have a lot to say about it, mmkay? To start out, we have the boys coming out to do an encore, and Robert just...reclines on the platform thingy like the decadent demigod he is and eats whatever he's eating while Bonzo, the most laddish member of the group, in a fluffy robe, no less, declares that he finds football to be "a load of bollocks". Robert, almost certainly the most effeminate member of the group (I guess one might be able to argue that Jimmy - with his delicate features and willowy physique and soft speaking voice - might be a little more effeminate, but that's neither here nor there, the point still stands, and that point is that Robert is a pretty pretty princess), stands right up to defend the sport that he's so passionate about (side note: anyone know why he says "soccer" and not "football"? Because I can't think of another British person who calls it that. The first few times I heard him use it, it was during interviews with American interviewers and/or for American TV shows or publications, so I thought it was just for clarity so they know he's not talking about American football, but this is a concert in Britain with, I'm assuming, a mostly British audience. Anyone know why he calls it that?).

The song kicks off with Robert and Jimmy doing, as I referred to a few days ago on a post featuring a gif from this performance, "backwards humping", or, "the bisexual secret handshake". They are so shameless in their weird ass public courtship display that you might just miss seeing Jonesy's beautiful smile in the background (and if you do, take that video back a few seconds and freaking look at that gorgeous smile. You'll thank me later).

When we get to the first chorus, Robert freaking throws one arm around Jimmy's shoulder, pulling him close to share the microphone, and I shit you not, Jimmy's foot pops. And if that weren't enough, Robert pulls away for a second just to look at Jimmy's face and smile, only to pull him in closer again. Get a room, you dorks. Then when the second chorus comes around, they have the stupidest lovesick smiles on their faces, which are so close together they can probably taste each other's breath. Then Jimmy sort of pushes off with this shoulder nudge and one of them (Jimmy, I think? I sounds like Robert, but Robert's already in the middle of a drawn out vocal, so I think it's Jimmy) gives this soft little grunt/sigh/suspiciously sexual sounding noise. They spend a moment doing a short rendition of (I think?) James Brown's "sex machine" (worth noting/remembering here that Led Zeppelin have their own tribute to James Brown in "The Crunge", a song that gives off all the bisexual energy that's considered safe for human consumption), and then...then...

...we get to the theremin segment. The motherfucking theremin segment. The climax, if you will, of this entire performance. The part where Jimmy and Robert have hardcore sex right there on stage, right there in front of their audience, at least half of whom is probably male, and the vast majority of whom at least claim to be heterosexual, since this is the 1970s and there's very real consequences in store if you're a dude who goes around telling people out loud that one of the main reasons you go to Led Zeppelin concerts is to see and hear obscenely beautiful men fuck each other's brains out. Or even admit that you're aware that's just what's going on on that stage. Yes, this is the part where Jimmy does incredible things with his hands and long slender little fingers that make Robert moan and scream like a particularly horny banshee. Look, there's no getting around it. Even before I shipped it, I had to acknowledge (if in kind of a jokey-jokey way) that, wow, Jimmy is really dedicated to seeing how much and how hard he can make Robert cum. And Robert, in turn, is doing everything he can to let Jimmy know just how much and how hard he's cumming. Which is very much, and very hard. Some things to note are the way Robert not only mimics the sounds that the theremin is making, but also some of Jimmy's gestures, like when Jimmy puts both hands up in the air and then we see Robert doing the same. Meanwhile, the rhythm section are doing their thing, John Paul Jones' bassline providing the sort of bow-chicka-wow-wow type soundtrack to this auditory gay porn. Also, around 5:45, you can hear the bass do something that sounds an awful lot like "Achilles' Last Stand", which at this point hasn't been written yet, but that particular riff has been and will be used in concerts for quite a while before ending up in said homoerotic epic.

What really, really gets me about this performance, though, is what happens at around the six minute point, when Jimmy goes to grab his guitar back from offstage and Robert just has this look on his face. He's saying "ooh, ooh," slowly sauntering in Jimmy's direction, looking straight at him, his eyes filled with what can only be described as pure lust. This part isn't for the audience. Most of the audience can't see Robert's face with the direction he's facing, and those that can are too far away to be able to see it. He's not faking this. He's not pretending to be horny or desperate to be provocative, not in the look he's giving Jimmy, anyway. I'm not sure if the look in his eyes here is one that can be faked. Oh no. He feels it.

And then Robert gets back to singing, "Feel a little lonely, in the middle of the night. I need you darlin', to make things alright." And who is he looking directly at as he sings this? Just take a wild guess.

tl;dr: Robert and Jimmy are about as subtle as a rainbow fireworks display spelling out "WE'RE BISEXUAL DISASTERS IN LOVE"

JIMMY - I found most of their last names in the mouthwashing reddit and as I searched up the surname Zare, it seemed to be of Iranian origin, hence why he's Iranian American to me. I like to think he was already pale and sickly looking before but during the game events he just looks. Worse. DAISUKE- Juarez is fairly a Filipino/Mexican name but I'm sticking with Filipino purely bc i believe he can do the budots. what is mouthwashing (the game), I know I could look it up but I’m not confident in the results being moreso about the game than the dental care and I feel like asking someone who wants to talk about it would be a good place to start (please I keep seeing art of this game I’m confused what’s happening)

It's a psychological horror game set on board of a crashed freighter space ship. On board, the five crew members are faced with dwindling food supplies as they fend off the slow descent into madness. With the captain unresponsive after the crash, you play as co-pilot Jimmy who has to take over responsibility for the crew's well being.

pre-playthrough doodles for mouthwashing [bit shite since i only referenced the steam page to avoid spoilers beforehand]❗

okay, so- i drew these lot before playing the actual game (maybe spoilers? went off the steam page photos/videos for references.) anyways here' my artistic breakdown in order of who got drawn first.

Jimmy - I knew he was the protagonist, went OKAY SO HE'S TRIPPING BALLS based on the trippy horse/pony and eye imagery in the trailers. Each eye for a different crewmember. Obligatory 'main character? of course, draw him first that's the privilege.' HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-

Anya - She's really really pretty- um- I based her off this one scene from 'Pearl' because there were axe references made. Decided that she deserved a kick ass axe. Also the only character I had somewhat spoilers for since I watched an animatic on the 'dead pixel' scene a week before I got into this. Also, as the tired looking nurse, I would buy her crocs or something. Genuinely need to draw her again and properly.

Daisuke - Thought his shìrt was nice, did a little MIKU MIKU BEAM for him to show off his rings. Honestly didn't have much of him to go off but he reminds me of someone I know irl. He like me fr fr I love his design so much I need to figure out his shirt pattern.

Swansea - TBH IM NOT HAPPY WITH THIS DOODLE BECAUSE AFTER PLAYING THAT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE HIM. Based him off that one jester painting because he had disappointed dad feeling the end-times are coming after the match vibes. Met this guy before in a Tesco I sWEAR- I feel like he knows he's too old for this mouthwash bullshit. Spacing out all 'what the actual fuck'.

Curly - I... struggled so bad. With the bandages. Put him off until last. Harvey Dent has prepared me to draw eyes on the other side of the face like that. Want to do this man justice visually honest to God. Even if I genuinely believed he crashed the ship at the time because of the steam page. I played both 'How Fish Is Made' and 'The Last One And Then Another' before drawing these, and I loved meeting him as a little fish ball thing. Gave him the cake, too, since I assumed it would be his birthday at some point?

I’m bored, and for the life of me don’t wanna write for the like..15 other full length wips, I present you what I would think that the pony express crew would bring on the tulpar alongside their clothes & hygiene!

Daisuke:

Along with him canonically carrying a gameboy on ship with him, I feel he’d probably bring those game boy stereo headphones so he can play at night.

With swanseas voice line about Daisuke only thinking with his ‘downstairs long nose’, I headcanon that Daisuke would have a higher libido (sex drive), so he’d probably pack some type of porn magazine.

Would probably bring like six different games for the gameboy. (Most likely Pokémon games.)

Curly:

Probably wouldn’t take much on board, maybe a card game to play with jimmy whenever duty is slow.

Also brought a history book onboard. Probably ww2 or ww1. I see him as a huge history nerd, just look at him and say he isn’t. I dare you.

I see him as a guy to chew tobacco so he’d probably sneak in chewing tobacco in his boxers. Helps him focus when it’s late.

Swansea:

Pictures of his kids and wife, and a switchblade? I see him as a guy to pack anything he might need so for some reason I think he’d pack a switchblade to make repairs easier

..he’d also bring batteries. You don’t know how much you need batteries until you don’t have them.

Probably somehow snuck on his kids drawings. He didn’t pack them. Neither did he pack the stuffed bunny he knew belonged to his son. Wonder how those got there..

Jimmy:

Chewing tobacco, probably the one to get curly into chewing tobacco, also turns into his dealer and upsells him but shh…

Pocketknife/butterfly knife. Does tricks with it absentmindedly on the ship, scares the ever living shit out of Anya when she enters the lounge late at night and is met with a deadpanned jimmy twirling around an open blade. Almost fainted the first time.

Probably alcohol too. He seems like a corona or bud light guy. Brings a 12 case. Low tolerance too so it’s one and done sadly for him. Snuck it in under his white long sleeves.

Anya:

Either a Walkman or a cd player with those orange cushiony headphones. Music helps her calm, and it helps her sleep. Freaks out if it isn’t with her, was totally a gift from her mom.

Coloring books or sketch pad too. I head-canon her to be a big sketcher or painter, just can’t paint on the freighter. She likes to make big doodle pages with different sketches or sketches of things around her.

Stuffed animal, probably a blue bunny or a white lamb. No I won’t explain. She seems like a stuffed animal person, totally sees them as little people and turns them around before changing.

Heating pad too. She looks like she had horrible back pain so to fix that…heating pad. Also helps her with cramps. It sits on her desk in the medical room.

BIG MOUTHWASHING SPOILERS AND TW FOR RAPE

I saw discussion on the Steam Community page about Anya being pregnant from Jimmy because he raped her, and I’m inclined to believe her.

Aside from her being skittish around him and trying to spend as little time alone with him as possible - such as her actively avoiding doing his psych eval specifically, she also asks Curly why they can’t put locks on the sleeping quarters, and doesn’t tell Jimmy first when she finds out she’s pregnant.

Someone also pointed out that Jimmy has a criminal record, and if Anya reports him when they dock he’ll have even less of a chance of living an okay-ish life after being laid off - which seems like a much more likely reason for the entire ship sabotage than “he was anxious about having to support himself and Anya and his unborn child”.

I also felt like Anya had far more chemistry with Curly - she confides in him, and is very relaxed and personable when it’s just the two of them together. I had initially assumed it was Curly’s baby when she told him about it,,, ofc that’s not exactly evidence in support of the theory but I think that’s another nail in the coffin

I might be wrong, and I also might’ve missed details or misremembered things, but I think it makes sense, and it’s the interpretation that makes the most sense to me.

It is absolutely hilarious to me that Ethubs, compared to other popular ships in the fan base, is by far the most NORMAL duo.

Like ok ok, looking @last-lifeduo-standing ‘s page, the most popular ships in this fandom are those with lots of like lore, fantastical elements, or idk in-universe importance or significance that makes them stand out. Does that make sense??

For example- Desert duo. Going off popular fanon interpretations, Desert duo is a pair thats the Watchers’ favorite. They are constantly being toyed with and pulled together. One of them is also a Watcher but has no control over the terrible stuff that happens to him and his friends. And remember! This is all commonly accepted fanon stuff.

Flower husbands consists of a two-time winner of the game who won by disobeying the Watchers’ rules. The other guy got some bird curse and always dies first despite his efforts.

Team Rancher, another very popular pairing kind of is treated with the same approach. It’s got Jimmy with the canary curse and Tango is now commonly headcanoned to have a curse of meaningless death (he’s been lore-ified)

Renchanting too has evo listener Martyn, and Ren who very much leans into role playing. Their character significance is quite obvious

As for Ethubs, I’ve seen next to no posts in this fandom treating them with the same specialness that is fucking hilarious. They are literally just two assholes that won fans over by pure skrunkly scrimbloness. By no means are they normal people! They are not normal they are in fact very very strange people. But in both canon and fanon interpretations they are literally just some guys. Ok Etho has a big reputation as a minecraft legend, but one by one people (Cleo, Joel) are realizing that ok he is just some guy. There is LITERALLY an arc in canon about how much of a guy he is. There is nothing special about these two and there never will be. Sure Ethubs has angst and famous moments, but are they Watchers? Cursed? Winners? No! They are just two guys who want to spend their time playing the game being mentally unwell about each other. And the fandom (me) fucking eats it up every time.

TLDR: all of the popular duos in this fandom have heavy lore elements to them because they consist of winners, or fan-appointed watchers/listeners/cursed people.

And then there’s Ethubs

I had this idea floating in my head that never made it to a comic page due to laziness a change in priorities.

It's called Take Two: Curly Knew

The general idea is sort of like the Daisuke isekai by @mellowsharkpolice, but instead of Daisuke being given a "Take Two" aboard the ship, Curly gets a "flash-forward" of what would happen if Jimmy leaves his sight right after he walks away. It's shown that Jimmy had locked the door, but in this he had forgotten to.

Curly runs in, stops him from disengaging the autopilot, and the day is saved, right? Well no, Jimmy is still alive, and Curly can't exactly kill him. He's too much of a coward for that.

So instead, Curly ties Jimmy to a chair and is kept in the maintenance room, with Daisuke tasked with monitoring him to make sure he doesn't escape and still eats.

Ok so now the day is saved, right? Jimmy is detained and the Tulpar is uncrashed. You can probably guess the answer.

After some prompting from Curly (Not realizing why she might not want to tell everyone on the ship) Anya tells Swansea what Jimmy did. Curly says that this is not to reach Daisuke. Curly is too busy, Anya was traumatized by him, and going by Swansea's reaction, Curly doesn't trust him not to hurt Jimmy. Daisuke is the only person left with the time, patience, and mental fortitude to be able to properly care for Jimmy in Curly's eyes.

Problem is, Daisuke's lack of information means that Jimmy can manipulate him scarily easily. Jimmy slowly builds Daisuke's trust, bit by bit, until he starts hinting that the others on the ship are hiding something from him. Jimmy was oh so alone compared to the others. He has this job thanks to Curly (he gags at the thought of gratitude towards that traitor), but he had no other friends on the Tulpar. In fact, Daisuke is the first friend Jimmy's made since boarding!

Daisuke should understand that if someone spread lies about him, it would be much easier for them to be believed, since everyone else barely knew him. In fact, not even Curly has seen Jimmy this vulnerable. Daisuke is special, because he's immune to liars and deceit.

Meanwhile, Anya keeps trying to convince Curly that Daisuke needs to know what Jimmy did; at least tell him that he tried to crash the ship! But Curly refuses. Daisuke doesn't need to know. Especially when he's appointed to be Jimmy's caretaker. Anya says she'll be his caretaker. Curly refuses even harder. Even Swansea agrees that he needs to know at least the footnotes version. Why won't you admit it Curly? You're just a coward He doesn't want Daisuke to know how bad he almost let it get it almost got.

Eventually, Anya overhears Jimmy telling Daisuke to get the axe from Swansea to cut him loose, and she interrupts them, telling Daisuke to go to Swansea. Daisuke refuses. He asks Anya to tell him the truth; why was Jimmy tied up? Was there some misunderstanding?

Anya tries to tell him that he doesn't need to know, but he shoots her down. What has everyone been hiding from him? Why will nobody say anything? What the hell happened that lead Jimmy to being tied up? Anya asks to speak in private, but Daisuke says if it's the truth, she can say it in front of Jimmy.

Curly and Swansea show up, hearing the shouting. Daisuke tells them he's not a kid and he should know what's being kept from him. That whatever Jimmy did, he shouldn't be tied up and that they could talk this out. Jimmy taunts Curly, agreeing that talking it out would've worked.

Anya finally breaks and tells him what he tried to do to everyone else, and what Jimmy did to her when Jimmy tries to tell Daisuke that he should be smart enough to not believe her lies (though not directed at Daisuke). Jimmy doesn't try to hide it, seeing it as his right to her body. Daisuke is shocked, confused, and angry.

He asks why nobody told him this. Anya says Curly told them not to.

He asks how long Swansea knew. Swansea says a month, maybe longer. The days are hard to keep track of.

He asks Curly how long he was planning on keeping this from him. Curly doesn't answer.

He asks whether he was planning to tell him at all. Curly doesn't answer.

He asks if Curly how long he knew Jimmy was like this. Jimmy answers.

"He gave me this job because my criminal record was so bad that I couldn't get a job anywhere else. Said he'd help me get through it when I found out Anya was pregnant"

Daisuke asks if this is true. Curly doesn't answer.

He asks again. And again. And again and again and again and again and again and- Curly. Wouldn't. Answer.

Daisuke storms off. Curly doesn't follow him.

Daisuke isn't talking to anyone while he processes what he's learned. He isn't mad at Anya or Swansea anymore, his emotions were out of control and he was taking it out on them.

He is however mad at Curly. He was a coward. Unfit to lead. If he could, he'd make sure that he never got that promotion.

Anya and Swansea were surprised that Daisuke could be lead up to this point. But Anya also knew this was a possibility. If only Curly had listened.

This AU, as you can tell, was a lot more Daisuke and Curly-centric. I had noticed how easy it was for Jimmy to manipulate Daisuke by saying how proud everyone would be of him if he disobeyed Swansea and saved Anya, and went "What if that but in a 'fix-it' AU". This AU was meant to center around how the red flags were always there but Curly closed his eyes to them because he prioritized being Jimmy's friend and savior over being the Tulpar's captain and leader.

And how Daisuke was both young enough to not understand why you'd overlook something so egregious, while being old enough to believe that Curly should've known better. Throughout this story, Daisuke would blame Curly for Jimmy's actions, hating him almost as much as Jimmy.

I'm just gonna post this and pretend it doesn't exist because while I think a lot of what Jimmy managed to do to Daisuke was very in-character (it happens over the span of weeks, and he's slow enough and methodical enough to make it seem like he's opening up to Daisuke.), I feel like Daisuke and Anya's reactions might have been OOC?

Like I don't think he'd blow up per se, but he'd definitely be mad at Curly for hiding something so important as Jimmy being a (sex pest? rapist?) with a sordid criminal record. Especially while expecting him to care for Jimmy.

Anya doesn't outright say what he did to her btw, but she implies it in a way that Daisuke is able to pick up on it. Jimmy keeps forcing her to be more explicit in her wording until she practically had to spell it out for him, too. Jimmy was expecting her to give up on explaining what happened, seeing her as too meek to go into any detail. But at that point, he knew he'd already lost Daisuke and his chances at escape, so he decided to drag Curly down with him.

Imo the reason Swansea didn't tell Daisuke in canon, but will tell him here, was because Anya and Swansea had no reason to believe that Jimmy would've put Daisuke in any sort of dangerous situation, especially since the vent was the only active threat on the Tulpar.

Meanwhile, this situation leaves Daisuke vulnerable to Jimmy convincing him of anything, since they're usually alone. Idk why Curly wouldn't send Swansea to supervise, or wouldn't at least let him go if he wanted to, but this AU was pretty half baked when I came up with it.

Maybe he naively believed that Jimmy wouldn't try to manipulate Daisuke to escape. Maybe he believed that Daisuke wouldn't be able to get his hands on something strong enough to cut the rope. Maybe he was terrified of losing the last bit of respect his crew had for him. Maybe he thought this would all blow over and things would return to normal. Maybe it's Maybelline, fuck if I know.

Also, some other things that I forgot to mention; - Curly hides the override key in the medical bay, but Swansea then hides it somewhere else; not even Daisuke or Anya knows where he hid it, though Daisuke thinks it's somewhere in the maintenance room. - After Daisuke calmed down, the first thing he does is apologize to Anya. He felt immense guilt at blowing up on her like that, especially since she's had no control over what's been happening. Afterwards, he apologizes to Swansea, who didn't take it personally in the first place. He'd be pissed too if something like that was kept from him that long. - Swansea is also mad at Curly, though he wasn't mad to the same extent as Daisuke until he found out that Jimmy had a criminal record that severe; afterwards he was pissed that he brought a "goddamn time bomb" onto a cargo ship expecting everything to be "sunshine and rainbows". - Anya feels similarly, but moreso betrayed that Curly would sacrifice the crew's safety to help his friend.
