I might be stepping into a controversial domain right now, but I think I'm going to explode if I read one more BS post praising Hammer of the Gods. That book (along Cole's book and the others that used Cole as a source) is so horrendous that I can't even begin to fathom why anyone would ever believe it or take it seriously.
On the one hand, I somewhat understand. Rockstars aren't exactly known for being decent people, so why would these guys be an exception? Why wouldn't they be just as bad? But I would like to think that people who call themselves fans would know better than that. Were the four of them perfect? Hell no. But they were absolutely not the gross, dubious people those books make them appear to be. Every word in those books was meant to make them look like the worst people, and people just believe it. They even think some of the false things written about them are funny.
We've all seen the interviews, and we know what others who know them have said about them. No one else seems to have anything negative to say except Richard Cole and the people who write whatever he says is true. Cole said the things that he did for drug money, and he has certainly never been a reliable source. Yet for some reason, everyone just automatically believes everything he says. It's always quoted and referred to in most articles, YouTube videos, etc.
I'm sure the band must love living with the fact that people judge them and even hate them based off of several series' of events that never took place and words that were never spoken. I'm sure Bonham would love to see all of the horrible things said about him after he was dead and no longer able to defend himself. If those things were really true, why did Cole wait so long to "blow the whistle"? I wonder how their families must feel about people thinking their father/brother/etc. is someone completely opposite of who he actually is.
As I said, they are not perfect. They have made mistakes just like everyone else. But they are certainly not the people those books made them appear to be. Those books were not "exposing them" or "calling them out on their debauchery", they were meant to harm the reputation of four good, family men who really just wanted to mind their own fkn business and wanted everyone else to do the same.
And no, this isn't just me defending celebrities I like. I don't even like them all that much, they aren't really my type. But right is right and wrong is wrong, and the utter slander against them by a mentally ill drug addict is absolutely wrong. Even worse are the people who constantly rattle on and on about how amazing it is.
So this veers a bit too close to fandom criticism for my tastes, but I'll share it because the major grievance is with Richard Cole and Hammer of the Gods, with the fans who take it seriously only being a secondary consideration. Generally, though, please avoid critical language toward Zep fans/fandom in confessions. Thanks!

if i could only pick one anecdote that just perfectly describes the kind of person robert plant is, it would be this one:
“On the drive from the hotel to the Forum, as his limo was jammed by traffic near the arena, Plant opened his sun roof and stood up on the seat to look out. He was instantly recognised by fans milling about, and he began to beat his chest and shouted “My people” at the fans before cooler heads dragged him back into the car.”
