The Jim Kweskin Extravaganza Celebration & New Record Release Event A live concert that honored and celebrated Jim Kweskin's legacy and his ongoing contributions to the music industry over the past 60-plus years. Held on February 4th - 2:00pm at the Arlington MA Regent Theatre “Sold Out” The concert featured songs from Jim’s recording on StorySound Records, Never Too Late: Jim Kweskin, Duets with My Friends, that was released on Friday, January 26, 2024. The show featured artists and songs from Jim’s storied career, including the renowned and influential Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Guest Appearances from Maria Muldaur, Fiona Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Samoa Wilson, Annie Raines, Paul Rishell, Juli Crockett, Suzy Thompson, Cindy Cashdollar and Matthew Berlin. 本日はMungo Jerryからの繋がりで、ジャグバンドを少し深く掘り下げて、米国よりジム・クウェスキンをご紹介していきます。

ジャグバンドは米国1900年初頭の米国南部地方で興った音楽バンドの形式。ジャグとはウイスキーなどの飲み物を貯蔵するための瓶を意味。ジャグは、口に息を吹き込むことによって、低音楽器として使用される。バンド構成はジャグや、洗濯板、ミュージカルソー、カズーなど身の回りのお手製楽器に加え、ギターやハーモニカなどを加えてカントリーやブルースを基調とした音楽ジャンル。

1900年にケンタッキー州で結成されたサイ・アンダーソン・ジャグバンドが元祖と言われています。

その後1924年にジャグバンド史上初のレコーディングが行われ、以降ガス・キャノンや、ウィル・シェイドが率いるバンドがシーンを賑わせ、一時下火になるも、1950年代に入ると、フォークブームと合わせてリバイバル。ボストンでは、Jim Kweskin、NYのThe Even Dozenなどがその代表例。若かりし頃のマリア・マルダーもどちらも参加。また、Rooftop Singersの「Walk Right In」はジャグバンド唯一の全米ナンバー1ヒットを獲得。またグレイトフル・デッドのジェリー・ガルシアらも、もともとはジャグ・バンドのメンバーであったことなど、時を同じくして、Dixieland Jazzも発展しましたが、ここら辺は米国音楽をたどる上で外せないジャンルであります。

では、本日はジャグバンド・リバイバルの火付け役であり旗手のJim Kweskin Jug Bandより、多くのアーティストにカバーされてる「Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me」をどうぞ。The Doorsとか、Frank Zappaあたりも色濃く影響を受けてそうな感じがします。何ならJim Kweskinは1950年代から活躍していて、まだ現役でやってますから、そこも注目に値するところです。
