Who wins the celestial showdown of galaxy clusters vs. superclusters? 相片擁有者 NASA Goddard Space Flight Center 透過 Flickr: This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a massive galaxy cluster glowing brightly in the darkness. Despite its beauty, this cluster bears the distinctly unpoetic name of PLCK G308.3-20.2. Galaxy clusters can contain thousands of galaxies all held together by the glue of gravity. At one point in time they were believed to be the largest structures in the universe — until they were usurped in the 1980s by the discovery of superclusters. These massive formations typically contain dozens of galaxy clusters and groups and span hundreds of millions of light-years. However, clusters do have one thing to cling on to: superclusters are not held together by gravity, so galaxy clusters still retain the title of the biggest structures in the universe bound by gravity. One of the most interesting features of galaxy clusters is the stuff that permeates the space between the constituent galaxies: the intracluster medium (ICM). High temperatures are created in these spaces by smaller structures forming within the cluster. This results in the ICM being made up of plasma — ordinary matter in a superheated state. Most luminous matter in the cluster resides in the ICM, which is very luminous in X-rays. However, the majority of the mass in a galaxy cluster exists in the form of non-luminous dark matter. Unlike plasma, dark matter is not made from ordinary matter such as protons, neutrons and electrons. It is a hypothesized substance thought to make up 80% of the universe’s mass, yet it has never been directly observed. Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, RELICS NASA image use policy. Top 10 most popular outfits of 2015 according to notes. Everything is so toned down compared to the previous years! See 2014, 2013 and 2012 top ten. I suspect number 8 was popular because of Madame Bissonnette!

Ocean Sky from Alex Cherney on Vimeo.
At a star party in August 2009 I took my first long exposure photograph of the night sky. I was so thrilled with the results that I dedicated most moonless weekends since then to photographing two things I love the most in nature - the night sky and the Ocean.
Taking a series of images and combining them into a time lapse video sequence made it even more interesting. I have since experimented with all-night time lapses, panning motion, etc. But most importantly I've enjoyed the journey immensely.
This time lapse video is the result of almost 1.5 years of work, 31 hours of taking images during six nights on Southern Ocean Coast in Australia.
Ocean Sky was awarded the overall winner prize at STARMUS astrophotography competition: starmus.com/pages/en/winners-starmus-astro-photography-competition128.php

PStereo - Emilie Nicolas from Outpost VFX on Vimeo.
OutpostVFX created this beautiful piece for Emilie Nicolas debut music video for Agile Films. Marcin Kolendo and Elena Estevez-Santos supervised the shoot in the Scottish highlands. A chilly affair. Back in the studio Josh Barlow was animating the whale so that the director could get a feel for the movement whilst still on the shoot. Giving greater confidence over the shot composition in the absence of a massive whale in the sky. The balance across the piece was to keep the VFX work believable despite the creatures being so far removed from their natural environment. With some very light touches from the animation and comp team we managed to reflect the power and grace of the animation to the serene yet powerful tones of the music. OutpostVFX are proud to have been involved in such a unique project and we are looking forward to seeing Emilie's music blossom as a result.
