The Saint: Marcia (2.6, ITC, 1963)
"Presumably you know the story behind your sister's death?"
"You mean the acid in the face?"
"Mmhm. A friend of mine, another actress named Claire Avery, has been threatened with the same thing. I thought you might be able to help me."
"How?"
"By telling me about your sister."
"Do you mean the girl? Or the legend?"

Plant of the Day
Friday 14 July 2017
At the National Trust's Melford Hall, Long Melford, Sudbury, the Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica (sweaty betty, biennial clary) was producing tall stems bearing many pink to white bracts and soft blue and white tiny flowers. This hardy short-lived perennial or biennial will seed freely and grow in any reasonable soil in full sun. The plant does have a very distinctive scent!

Hot Enough For June (Agent 8 3/4, 1964)
"I am very well informed about England: I read The Daily Worker."
"I see."
"And, uh... Is it true that you have to go to Eton to be in the government?"
"It helps."
"And a Party member - a Communist - could he go to Eton?"
"I've never actually known anyone who was a Communist and who went to Eton, but uh, there have certainly been quite a few who were Communist by the time they left."
"Ah, but did they go into the government?"
"Usually the Foreign Office."

Father Dear Father ** (1973, Patrick Cargill, Jill Melford, Natasha Pyne, Ann Holloway, Noel Dyson, Joyce Carey, Ursula Howells) – Classic Movie Review 9840
Director William G Stewart’s 1973 British comedy Father Dear Father is a pleasant record – if a pointless expansion – of the popular, simple Seventies British TV comedy show into a feature-length format that unfortunately only stresses the failings of the original series by extending a slight story to 99 minutes of screen time.
Gifted farceur Patrick Cargill (1918–1996) is fine as he re-creates…

The Organization (Yorkshire Television, 1972)
“I tell you how this office spends its time. First; we answer queries from the press. The firm’s a big one, my Chairman’s a well known public figure - we get a lot of queries. If the answer’s a creditable one, I give it. If the answer is discreditable, but there’s no way of concealing it, then, uh, I… make it sound as good as I can. Sometimes I have the easy way out! I can simply say I don’t know. For instance, this morning. There’s a rumour flying ‘round Fleet Street that the Chairman will get a title in the next honours list. Now, ah, I know he wants one - I feel sure he’s been working for one - now thank God, I don’t know if he’s getting one! Second. We feed information to the press, of the kind that redounds to the glory of Greatrick. For instance these last few days. The manager of our Shaddington toy factory, uh… doesn’t expect a title, but he’s working his arse off for an OBE! He’s a local do-gooder. He’s conned his workmen into half an hours unpaid overtime, to make toys for the local hospital - and he wants to have it known! Hmm? Now, ah, thirdly… I explain to the Chairman - or whomever - why that story didn’t make the centre-page spread of The Mirror, or… why an uncomplimentary remark about Greatrick did make the bottom of page fifteen of The West Wittering Weekly. This takes up most of my time.“
A strangely hybrid type of mini-series from ITV, The Organization isn’t entirely sure what it wants to be. It’s often funny, sometimes very funny, but its also a drama, a satire, a piercing critique of ‘middle management’ types and business-speak. It seems to deplore the vacuousness of public relations whilst simultaneously celebrating the ingenuity and guile of the people who practice it. It’s a lot to take in.
It’s also strangely timeless. The modern business model it explores, with emphasis not on product or even consumer, but on the very act of consuming, feels prescient for 1972. In style it prefigures the kind of TV Aaron Sorkin would go on to write - very fast, very wordy, lots of movement but little of great weight actually happening. Everybody is so wrapped up in the job at hand that the outside world never once intrudes.
It is, though, very well written - by Philip Mackie, late of The Caesars but before The Naked Civil Servant (Mackie’s granddaughter, btw, is Pearl!) - lots of incredibly sharp back-and-forth, a lot said but even more unsaid (and most of whats said is intentionally misleading). Fantastic cast; Donald Sinden is in prime Cheshire Cat mode, Jill Melford savages everyone and Bernard Hepton is at his brow-beaten, downcast best.
Very enjoyable but not to be consumed all at once. Proto-yuppies can become too easily exhausting, and by the end I was screaming for somebody to just say whatever the hell they meant to say.
