Genshin Descendants official Character Poll

First of all (for all you newbies out there), what is Genshin Descendants?

Genshin Descendants is a Tri-world crossover of Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Honkai Impact 3rd. The cast of Genshin Descendants consists entirely of the children of ships. You, a character insert, are the child of the Traveler and the Trailblazer [purposefully left ambiguous]. The main character, as you soon discover, is not truly you, but a mysterious fox girl who appears to be the daughter of Raiden Ei and Yae Miko…

(There is no Zhongli x Childe, and do not ask. The answer is NO)

For those unfamiliar ^^^ Ladies and gentleman, feel free to critique any already created character (except for Kaminari Rayaka, my poor innocent bundle of angst and hurt/no comfort), so long as it’s not for any unreasonable concept (E.G. you like Yae Miko x Ayato more than Ayato x Thoma; basically, don’t hate the character because of ship preferences).

Last but not least, my characters are FREE DOMAIN, unless being used for the following reasons:

An incest or pedophilic ship (I hate that I have to put this, but there are some people out there)

Any fanfic directly depicting a character of my creation committing sexual assault, necrophilia, or murder

Changing the ‘birth’ parents of the character for any reason (other than BOTH parents dying, or them abandoning said character, and being adopted by another ship)

Things I DO allow, but other creators might not:

Putting certain characters into other universes where OTHER ships don’t match with the ones I have added; E.G. putting Kamila in a Yae x Ayato universe and having her interact that way.

Time travel fics. That’s fine, especially if Rayaka is involved.

Four Ships:

1. Wangxian (Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian from MDZS) - greek mythology was one of my passions, still kind of is, but lately I've been venturing out to danmeis and man what can I tell you, Wangxian's love story is beautiful and worthy of the countless retellings (a 5 book series, a 50 episode LA/ the cql, a donghua, a manhua, a chibi anime, YOU NAME IT!!) The way they portray selfless love got my heart all melting up into so many happy pieces (Wangji carrying the 300 strikes on his back, raising WWX's kid, okay i'll shut up now). I may not retweet/reblog them as often as other MDZS content but that's only because if i think about them too long I go clinically insane (j). Shoutout to SangCheng being my favorite MDZS secondary pair tho, Jiang Cheng & Jin Ling as my fav platonic pair and 3ZUN for my favorite poly ship.

2. Sukka (Suki/Sokka from ATLA) - Migrating to twitter to join the ATLA fandom in 2021 was... an experience. But if there was one thing that kept me going through every drama popping out, it's them 💚💙 god i love mutual respect and rivals to lovers and the way they look so simple yet their love is so strong like they found each other in the war EVERY. DAMN. TIME!! Also I'm weak for the goofy guy and the cool girl dynamic, and they nailed that dynamic to the ground. It's a very important pair to me, at least enough to make half of my edits on twitter about them and a dedicated account to daily pictures of them that I don't really update that much anymore.

2. Arenos (Ares/Hypnos from Hades Supergiant / Greek Mythology) - I've had lots of greek myth ships, Zeus/Hera once occupied my mind a lot. Now, maybe it's because both these gods are hardcore favorites, but i love this ship a lot. It's about the war/dream dynamic, the guys struggling through parent issues and finding healing with each other, Ares only being soft around Hypnos and Hypnos letting his guard down for once and allowing himself to be angry and sad towards the one person who understands it (at least Hades!Hypnos would, as he is the reason I love Myth!Hypnos a lot more now). I just think they're neat :>

4. Ninglan (Ningguang/Yelan from Genshin Impact) - One of the first pairings someone would mention when talking about Genshin is Beigguang, the really really popular ship between Beidou and Ningguang. I, however, chose pain. Ninglan excites me because it's a lady in a high position and her operative who does her dirty work,,, but it's more than that. Yelan also helped Ningguang get that position (thru legal but errr still sus means). Yelan is someone who thrives off of danger and pain, Ningguang gives her a job that makes her feel fulfilled, but when Yelan was at her lowest point, when her colleagues died and left her emotionally drained and scarred you know who was with her? Ningguang. It's about the mutual understanding and trust they place in each other, to look at each other and understand what the other is saying by just a glance. They're the embodiment of Phoebe Bridger's "Graceland Too." I love them a normal amount.

Last Song: Funeral by Phoebe Bridgers. I relate to it, after my cousin died. Everytime I feel sad I listen to it and think of my tita (aunt). It makes me feel less alone, and the song is relateable ("I don't need you to tell me what that means, I don't believe in that stuff anymore.") A worthwhile listen when feeling melancholic.

Currently Reading: Mo Dao Zu Shi Vol. 1!! Already finding the donghua and cql, I need a doctorate in this story because I love love love it.

Last Movie: Do series count? If so, my last series was with my mom, In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal, which is basically a netflix documentary of fucked up Korean Cult Leaders cases. It's quite respectful about its topic and uses real life testimonies. I'm throroughly disgusted by their actions but the marites in me wants to know more.

Craving: for my little cough and cold to end ;) and maybe cheese popcorn. I miss popcorn.

Four ships:

Zeus/Ganymede: feel like it'd be a crime not to start here, haha. I've always been into mythology, but randomly thinking about Ganymede's myth a couple years ago now (that long!!) got me wanting to read Greek myth stuff, and I started with the Iliad (for the Trojan-related angle) and the Bibliotheke, and so. I might currently be more focused elsewhere but this is still my beloved ship <3 You can do so much with them, and, especially, I'd say, by interpreting them as mutually in love. There's obviously other m/m couples in Greek myth and even one of those that at first looks tragic doesn't need to end that way (Apollo/Hyacinthus) but there are so many reasons Zeus/Ganymede is the one that has me by the throat.

Menelaos/Paris: Honestly, looking back I'm not quite sure how I didn't zero in on this one from reading the Iliad itself the first time, because this is definitely one of the flavours of ships I love. This ship is also what led to, first, Helen/Menelaos/Paris for me and then Helen/Paris, because 99% of the time I just don't care at all about het ships. This ship is also why I currently am like I am about Paris! Make no mistake, I didn't hate or dislike him before that, either, like the majority of Tumblr (and elsewhere) seem to do; reading the Iliad I mostly thought him kinda hapless and inoffensive, so going from there and liking him wasn't that big of a step. The possibility of them having bonded during those nine days in Sparta (or in Troy!), going from friends (or more) to enemies with complicated feelings still in the background is just so damn juicy to me.

Carmilla/Laura: original novella flavour! One day I hope to do a rewrite/retelling of my own, that would definitely end with Laura going or otherwise together with Carmilla, one way or another. The way Carmilla talks to/about Laura and what they feel for each other is just. so great. The caterpillar quote. The one about Laura loving her or hating her, and especially "love will have its sacrifices; no sacrifice without blood". And you know. The boob-biting to feed is extremely inspired and very hot, even if Le Fanu undoubtedly didn't mean it that way. I don't care. They're mine now. :)

Darth Vader & Luke Skywalker: Since I am so deeply into gen&family ships aside from romantic/sexual shipping, it feels, again, like a crime not to mention these two. The ST might have broken the back of my fannish engagement in SW currently, but these two? I love them. I love Luke's impossible and earnest belief in his father's inherent goodness, I love that fucking scene at the end of ESB where Vader reaches out and Luke reflexively, despite everything, says 'father?' HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE IT???

Last song: Oh, uhh... I don't remember, but it's possible it was Teeth by 5 Seconds of Summer (happens to be one of my Helen/Paris songs for late war lol). I end up listening to a row of songs while drawing, sometimes (which is the only time I can listen to music and actually do something else at the same time), but it could have been another one, just as well.

Currently reading: Iliaden - en cover, by Dimitrios Iordanoglou, which is a (pretty heavily, sometimes) abridged and modernized version of the Iliad where the language is extremely slangy sometimes and the setting has been moved into "present day". Everyone uses guns and stuff. Apollo's main epithet is now "the Bomber" lol and he uses bombs and grenades. It's both extremely fun(ny) and really interesting, even if the language used sometimes make me wince even when I get why he's chosen it. But it's exactly because I know the changes he's made etc. that makes it extra interesting. When he keeps lines word-for-word from the Iliad they both stick out and fit in very well and it's interesting to see that, too. Also, and much longer than the above, is Paris in the Epic Tradition : a Study in Homeric Techniques of Characterization by Roberto Nickel, his thesis from 1997! I've mentioned it before; Nickel is exploring the possibility of the Iliad having changed/presented Paris (a lot) differently from how he might have been in traditional oral epic material. It's really interesting!

Last movie: Dungeon and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! Loved it, a lot of fun, and despite how long it was, it all moved along at a good clip, nothing dragged.

Genshin impact characters and songs that fit them???

Just to clarify: Characters can appear multiple times, this can also apply to groups, and yeah

Dainsleif - Soldier (Fleurie) 

He was a knight in the royal guard, and the chorus “Soldier keep on marching on/ head down till the work is done/ waiting on the morning sun/ soldier keep on marching on” 

It just seems so fitting since he’s immortal and roaming the lands now. It’s sort of like “Don’t give up hope yet” and I really hope Dain doesn’t lose hope. 

Kaeya - Set Me Free (Nico Collins) 

Kaeya singing about how he wants to run from fate. Nuff said. 

Ragnvindr Brothers - Achilles come down (Gang of youths) 

I know that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers, but the great thing with a lot of love songs is that if you show a different imagery you can show siblings. 

Both of them are depressed as hell and I doubt they would want one another to die. 

“Achilles, Achilles, just put down the bottle/ Don’t listen to a word you’ve consumed” Works for Kaeya for obvious reasons. And “You crave the applause, yet hate the attention/Achilles your act is a ruse” fits Diluc for some reason. Idk. It just works

Ragnvindr Brothers - Empty Space (Reiinary) 

This song is originally a SheRa (?) song and it’s just so sad. Just listen to it and you’ll get what I’m saying. I know that I have the Ragnvindr brothers on this list a lot, but I really want them to end up on better terms by the end of Genshin since I had my heart ripped out of my chest by Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying in GDC. Let the siblings be happy for fucks sake. 

Khaenri’ah as a whole - The Plagues (Prince of Egypt soundtrack) 

Idk why but I see the destruction of Khaenri’ah going two ways; 1) a bloody fucking massacre in one night, or 2) A slow downfall due to curses from the archons like the plagues from Moses’ story from the Bible. 

I imagine maybe Dain being Moses and telling the gods to stop the slaughter, like yelling at them on a cliff while Khaenri’ah burns in front of him. 

Also the archons as the choir (that’s actually supposed to be God in the movie which is pretty fitting) that say “Thus said the Lord” as in the “lord” their talking about is Celestia’s will or something. Because they can’t disobey Celestia’s orders.

If I were to animate this,  I would make the archon’s these imposing black silhouettes with eyes glowing their respective colours so that it would make Dainsleif and Khaenri’ah as a whole seem small and weak compared to them. 

Khaenri’ah trio - Cradles (Sub Urban) 

Mainly because of the “Fire’s spreading all around my room/ the world’s so bright/ it’s hard to breathe/ but that’s alright” because I just like the idea of having Dain watching as Khaenri’ah burns. 

“I see the world through ink and bleach/ Cross out the ones who heard my cries and watch me weep” works really well for Dain??? I mean think about it, his mask is the ink, and he’s “crossing out” the archons. 

Also because of the sort of music box sound is sort of childish, and Kaeya and Albedo have a lot of trauma from their childhood so it could work. 

Archons - They’re Only Human (Death Note musical) 

Idk why??? I just eh??? I originally thought Venti as the female voice, but I think the Tsaritsa would fit better since she turned against the other archons. Idk who would be the male voice though since we don’t know what the other archon’s are like and Venti and Zhongli just wouldn’t work for it. Maybe one of the harbingers??? 

Xingqiu x Chongyun - Russian Roulette English demo cover 

It’s just such a cute song and really gives me highschool au friends to lovers vibes. Idk just fits

Kaeya x Albedo - Sweater Weather (The Neighborhood) 

Ah yes, our two disaster bisexuals to the Bisexual Anthem.™ Idk I just picture them at the beach just being all lovey dovey and maybe even a little spicy. 

If I animate it it’s gonna be black and white and a modern au of course. No questions asked. 

Beidou x Ningguang - Everybody talks (Neon Trees) 

Just because they’re both pretty famous figures and people would talk if they got together. Also the way the singer sings the song just sounds kinda fruity?? Like idk what it is about it but it is definitely not a straight song.

Sinae Unicornis Act 1

I went into Ganyu’s story quest with a low bar set for it to jump over. As long as it was better than Albedo’s, I wouldn’t be disappointed. And hey, I wasn’t. Not because the bar was low, but because this story quest was very fun.

Warning: this post contains major spoilers for the entirety of Ganyu’s story quest! If you haven’t played through the quest yet I would recommend not reading this post because there are lots of spoilers and some of it will not make any sense.

the characters

The characters were possibly my favorite part of Ganyu’s story quest. I absolutely love seeing playable characters and named NPCs during other characters’ story quests and Ganyu’s was full of them.

Firstly, we need to talk about the character who was unequivocally the most important NPC in Ganyu’s story quest... the Hydro Fatui Skirmisher. He was perfect and I love him. He just wanted to pick fresh berries on his morning off and ended up getting attacked by some randos who thought he was doing wrong just because of his loyalty to the Tsaritsa. The game’s been giving the Fatui NPCs a lot more personality as time goes on— they now have idle animations, voicelines, and some of them even have names— and I love it. This perfect hydro man was just the icing on the “sympathetic villains” cake.

Another awesome character featured in Ganyu’s story quest was my favor— uhhh, my second fa—- no, uhh.. one of my favorite adepti, Cloud Retainer. I want to see more of her. She’s fantastic. I’m really confused about her relationship with Ganyu in the past, because it sounds like she looked after Ganyu when the latter was a kid, but Zhongli says that Ganyu’s the Adeptus who’s been working for Rex Lapis for the longest. Maybe Cloud Retained knew Ganyu from before she made the contrast with Rex? I dunno. Her stories about Baby Ganyu were so fecking cute and revealed a little bit about Ganyu’s adorable past.

Another Adepti we saw in Sinae Unicornis was, in the words of Paimon, “that cold- hearted loner”, Xiao. It was nice to see a little corner of Xiao’s caring side— while he’s pretty blunt about it, he does want Ganyu to be happy and acknowledge both her Adepti and her human sides. It’s also pretty adorable to see Xiao caught off guard for a second— he isn’t quite sure what to do for Ganyu’s second trial, so he gets flustered and makes something up. It’s gonna be a real test not rolling for him during his banner, because the more I see of him the more attached I get.

The next character I desparately have to talk about was the real MVP of Sinae Unicornis, Uncle Tian! I was absolutely delighted to get backstory for the slightly sus fisherman who looks after Childish Jiang. It was so fun to hear an old man call Ganyu “onee- sama” in the Japanese dub,,,, and the idea that Tian’s known Ganyu since he was young enough to call her “older sister” is really cute. And kind of upsetting. More on that later. Now, *stares pointedly at Jiangxue*, if only we could get some backstory on another mysterious fisherman...

the combat

Ganyu’s story quest had a really nice balance of combat and story for me. The two trial run trials were well- designed to showcase Ganyu’s abilities.

Cloud Retainer’s trial was a lot harder than Xiao’s for me because I kinda suck at aiming, especially when my eyes kept drifting to the ticking timer above Ganyu’s head. But even though at one point I didn’t notice the correct path forwards for a solid 30 seconds, I still managed to finish the trial in one try. It was kinda difficult, but not too hard.

Xiao’s trial was a neat demo of Ganyu’s cryo abilities. Even though I refuse to roll on any banners until Hu Tao’s, she fit right into my team of Diluc, Xingqiu, Kaeya, and Zhongli. Ganyu in a team comp seems to reeeeally want Pyro and Hydro units with her, plus maybe a cryo user for the cryo damage boost inside her circle. She’s like Amber but way better.

Side note: I haven’t looked for any sort of meta info on Ganyu yet, but during her trial run her ult energy regeneration was really weird. It took her a long time to get her first ult up, but right after I used it her next ult was up off cooldown, and the ult after that was ready before her circle had even ended. Idk what’s going on there but her ult seems to do something with energy regen.

Ganyu

Sinae Unicornus showed us a lot about Ganyu.

Not that I knew anything about her before it.

Ganyu is a polite, kind, and respectful person. She overworks herself to the point of falling asleep standing up and likes eating Qingxin flowers. But her story quest shows another side of Ganyu— a side that’s learned a lot from being alive for thousands of years. Ganyu is incredibly good at her job and has picked up a lot of tricks over the millennia. She observes what those around her do and learns from them. She has a severe, cold side to her that makes her all the more efficient in her work. Ganyu’s is the second Adepti story quest we’ve gotten so far, and oh by the archons she and Zhongli are such great strategic players.

Ganyu is also lonely. She’s in between two worlds, and can’t be fully a part of either. When she’s with mortals, she’s an Adepti, and when she’s with Adepti, she’s a mortal. There’s nobody in the world that Ganyu knows of who is truly both and neither like she is. The mortals around her admire her, the Adepti around her seem to see her as young/ lower in rank than they are. So of course she would take solace in befriending Aether, someone who’s also not quite a mortal or a god.

In a way, Ganyu’s story quest almost ties into Albedo’s. They’re both “inhuman” in a way that isolates them from others and turns them into lonely individuals. This loneliness and isolation brings them, consciously or unconsciously, closer to Aether. This one similarity also brings attention to the differences between Albedo and Ganyu— Albedo is neither human nor god, while Ganyu is both.

I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I think putting Ganyu’s story quest right after Albedo’s was a very nice touch.

ending thoughts

Sinae Unicornis was a very decent story quest. It was no Carmen Dei, but I’d say it was on the level of Jean’s and Mona’s. And,, ,,, it made me value Albedo’s story quest a tiny bit more. I love Ganyu, I think she’s adorable, and she seems like a pretty good versatile unit. She’s risen through the ranks of my favorite Genshin characters and is probably in the top 10. Despite all of these complements I will unfortunately not be rolling for her.

The next story quests we get shoooould be Xiao’s and Hu Tao’s (ofc I wouldn’t complain if Qiqi, Keqing, Fischl, Bennett, Barbara, Noelle, Sucrose, Chongyun, Diona, Xinyan, and Ningguang also got story quests...). I’m extremely excited to see Edgy Boy again and to finally meet my favorite funeral parlor owner. I’m also hyped for the events we’ll get before 1.3– hypostatic symphony and multiplayer Liben should be coming up soon. and then.... 1.3!

The names are kind of boring but "Xiao" sounds nice and "Jiang" has a nice ring to it and "Ningguang" means "gentle cloud." Also, you should come up with a cute pun, like "she's a snake lady because of the yuan ti bard." Anyway here's the names, you can just pick one!
