hi! do you have any recs for your favourite portrayals of Talia in fics? I just reread Choices and now I'm in the mood for some more well-written Talia

Few things make my heart go as soft as rereads, anon, thanks so much. 💙 I went through my bookmarks, and here are a few I love (some of these are locked to archive members only):

Drink Your Tea by Lysical. One of my all-time favorites.

people die (love does not) by JHSC. This is a comfort read that I come back to again and again.

Let the Night be Dark for All of Me by GavotteAndGigue. The premise of this fic is super unique and interesting.

make a wish (or two) by someplacewarm. I don't like to pick favorites, but if I was going to for Talia portrayals, this might be it.

Reviews Are In by Here_we_go. Part of the Bargain Bin series, this short installment might be the only one with Talia. You'll probably need to read previous parts to understand this one, but it's well worth it bc the series is fantastic, and I adore Talia as she's written here.

Nests and Cages by LanternWisp, Lysical. This is a series (the whole of which is amazing) - different installments feature varying degrees of Talia. I especially like Temporality (it hurts sooo good).

The Incredibly Reluctant Re-Establishment of Family (A Live Blog with Jason Todd) by southby. Another series, the entirety of which is wonderful and hilarious, but I think this is the only installment with Talia on-page for any length of time.

butcherbird, fly away home by e_va. Talia's on-page presence is pretty limited here, but her influence on the story is huge. Another of my all-time favorite fics.

I wish I had more recommendations on this topic. Unfortunately, it seems like the majority of fics cast Talia as a backdrop villain to the Bruce & Jay dynamic (she manipulated Jason, turned him against Tim, etc.), which is so disappointing.

this is actually such a difficult question. in spite of years spent reading jason-centric fanfics, it is very rare that i find something that i genuinely enjoy. still, i do have some favourites that i go back to.

i want to tell you so badly why i adore this fanfic but that would spoil the conclusion. so instead i can just tell you that it contains my unpopular agenda for jason's character development.

the (family) doctor's appointment by smleeish (1/1, 4k)

i have some qualms with the minuatiae of this work but this sickfick surprised me with the depth of the character study. the conclusion is so beautiful in the way it gets to the core of jason's values.

i normally avoid sex-worker aus so please do know that this had to really impress me to be found on this list. the main reason for which it winded up here is a conversation jason has with bruce in the second installment.

the clay steals the clay by zipadeea (1/1, 2,5k)

just give it a read. a haunting... fix-it. i think about the usage of catholic themes in this fanfic often.

a huge reason for which i love this one so much is the thematic similarity to the earth-51 arc in countdown. there's such good understanding of what made jason who he is as the red hood & his relationship with batman as the symbol and with bruce as his father.

my favourite jay & dick fanfic! if you've been following this blog for a while, you know i am very particular about their relationship. you also know that i believe in jason's need to reconnect with his childhood and that dick should be a part of it, and this piece delivers that in the sweetest way.

before i get to the praise, i have to say that this fanfic does talia very dirty and that i am not a fan of how it deals with mentions of jason's childhood & his robin days. however, it is also 190k of jason having a perpetual mental breakdown and it follows canon event starting from the lost days and finishing with countdown. it has great pacing and an admirable balance of being plot-driven and the focus on character development. jay is so painfully young and lost. i also really enjoyed dick's attitude. it's a riot and an emotional rollercoaster. i will never recover from it.

Hello lovely! I'm sorry it took me a couple of days to get to this, I needed to sit down and look through some blogs/AO3, but I've found a bunch of fics that feature one or both of the boys celebrating Hannukah! It's a wonderful, well-written, heartbreaking story about how Clint loses one family, joins SHIELD, and gains another family in the process. It spans about 18 years start to finish, there's a lot of great stuff about Natasha and Phil coming into Clint's life, there's 4 *amazing* OC women that are Clint's friends/family, there's bits about depression and mental health and therapy all woven in...

and if you fall in love with it like I did, there's a companion piece about Barney's story that is even longer and more heartwrenching 😭

Damian slowly unclips his cape. He hesitates. Then he wraps it around Dick’s shoulders.

“Not,” Damian says, “everything.”

I didn't think too much of Willis Todd before reading this. Normally people characterise him a lot as an abusive dirtbag, but this fanfic doesn't do that and I find it really interesting. Definitely a good fic.

“I beg to bloody differ,” Constantine mutters.

Nobly, Tim elects to ignore him. “I want you to teach me.”

“Teach you what? Manners?”

“I already know manners,” Tim says, then barrels on as Constantine snorts in disagreement, “what I need to learn is necromancy.”

Very much enjoyed a look at the magic side of DC, especially since I haven't read much stuff on it before. I don't know how much of it is true to canon, but if it isn't, it feels very built-in and detailed in the way the magic system is written. Necromancer!Tim and questionable adult John Constantine is a delight to read.

Bet Your Bottom Dollar by husborth (7k, T) cw: referenced sexual assault

Dick's been having kind of a hard time, recently. When it boils over, Bruce is there for him.

Lots of good things to write about this fic: comes highly recommended. I've reread this and the author's other works multiple times.

Circles by withthekeyisking (9k, M)

Dick understands the necessity of working with Hush, that having the world continue on thinking that Bruce Wayne is alive is a useful thing. Doesn't mean he has to like it. Doesn't mean it's easy to engage with a man with Bruce's face when Dick still misses his dad like a limb.

And it turns out that's a weakness Thomas is all too happy to exploit.

If you're feeling up for some angst, give this one a try.

Boku no Hero Academia

One For All is a sentient quirk. It isn't evil, or malicious. But it's sentient and it has one goal: to carry out the will of its first user - overcoming All for One.

A very cool fic! It does a great job of making OFA come across as creepy, and then they take it down another road.

Shouto’s life has cracked open like a raw egg on concrete. Some things will never be the same, but some things will.

It's actually been a while since I read this one, but I do remember that I really enjoyed it.

Candor by OwlF45 (60k, M)

Izuku’s ears pop.

It’s the third time Izuku’s hit the pavement face-first.

He’s so close to pulling himself up to his knees when a pipe slams through his lower back and pins him to the concrete. His breath leaves him all at once. He tries to scream. He can’t.

And the rest of the building falls on him in a burst of smoke and dust. His eardrums shatter, he lays flat against the pavement, spitting red globs of blood, and he tries not to remember red eyes and white hair and—

Or: The Hero Commission passes a new code that requires all heroes to complete a mental simulation test. For Izuku, the consequences are catastrophic.

I'm so into the themes that the author explored in this fic, and just kinda everything about it? You can tell they worked a lot on it, and I think Candor is now one of my favourite BNHA fanfics, because wow. Comes HIGHLY recommended.

Walk a Mile in Another’s Shoes by katydid (56k, WIP, T)

The Aoyamas think twice and decide not to get involved with a shady man who claims to be able to give quirks. Instead, Hisashi and Inko Midoriya purchase a naval laser quirk for their son in exchange for a large sum of money and an undisclosed favor.

A decade later, All for One comes to collect his due. Izuku Midoriya must choose between his mother’s life or betraying his ideals and his friends.

Read this fic. Read all of the other fics the author has written. Thank me later. This one isn't my favourite but I do very much enjoy it: all of them are really good and are worth reading I think.

At the beginning when everyone’s coming into the server and meeting everyone else! Seeing the new atmosphere for each bang is a lot of fun.

Who is your favorite batfam member? Why? // Which batfam member would you most like to be stuck in a lift with?

The thought process goes: Jason would kill me, I would kill Damian, Dick and I would get along pretty well but in trying to get out of the lift one of us would get stuck in the shaft, but Tim would actually manage to get us out so I’m choosing him. Although if I have to stay stuck in the lift, Steph would be great company,

What’s your favorite romantic ship, if any? // if you had a superhero identity, what would your colour scheme be? also, cape or no cape?

Cape absolutely, but one of those cool capelets that they had in Do Revenge except in black. Extra brownie points if it can attach onto a coat that my civilian identity can wear. The cape is also reversible. (Can you tell how much I want a cape in real life?)

Jason and Tim. I go onto ao3, to read something else, I blink, and I am scrolling through the tag again. However, give me all the Jason and Dick identity reveal and subsequent bonding in the world.

Code of Silence by JHSC is a series I’ve been rereading, as well as Ain’t No Compass, Ain’t No Map by ebjameston which has been a must read for lots of long car journeys.

Is there anything you’ve done for the batfam fandom that you’re especially proud of?

I was rereading my first dc fic, there are no rules in the underground fight club, and it made me laugh, so I’m dropping it here.

quarters halves and wholes by ladyeggplant HRPF; Mat/Tito I was a year and a half late to reading this one because I've not been much for HRPF for the past uhh year and a half, but it was a delight.

we could live for a thousand years by defcontwo Check Please!; Jack/Kent WIP, updating regularly. In which Jane Austen fixes Jack Zimmermann.

Code of Silence by JHSC (Series) Batman; Jason Todd & Willis Todd I generally do not bother listing recs that are already in my AO3 bookmarks but I have been eagerly awaiting updates of the latest installment of this series, so I will include it here.

let none be content with me by Mizzy Marvel 616; Steve/Tony You would be correct in thinking that I read through a good third of Mizzy's back-catalogue last week. This was a particular favorite. Set early in 616, aka before Iron Man's identity is known.

Belief Space by magicasen Marvel 616; Steve/Tony Did I mention I was in a 616 hole last week? This is a very good Hickman fix-it, and one that I had somehow not read before.

Dimension Home by Pookaseraph (Series) Marvel 616; Steve/Tony I am generally not one for kidfic but this series had me laughing out loud multiple times.

to be honest, i've been mostly reading books lately. xD that could be a whole other post, but three quick reads i enjoyed were: the lies of the ajungo, vera wong's unsolicited advice for murderers, and white cat, black dog. i was in the process of reading a desolation called peace but have paused to do a quick read-through of burn it down.

Too Much Fucking Salt by pez_the_platypus

A rural housewife instinctively understood the law of quantity into quality. Add a pinch of salt to a soup and it tasted better; add one pinch too many and you ruined the batch. Jason had been in limbo for a year and a half, trusting things would get better even though everything just seemed to be getting worse. It was something small that set him off, but really, it was an accumulation of a lot of things that led to this. He was going to kill the Joker.

What Would You Trade The Pain For? (I’m Not Sure) by Disniq

Jason has been doing an outstanding job of not thinking about Bruce in the four months since Roy pulled his ass out of Gotham. When Jason gets hit by an unidentified beam and starts reliving his worst Bruce-related memories in his dreams, though, there’s not a whole lot he can do about it except maybe vent some frustrations. Or; the universe conspires to put Jason and Bruce in a get-along shirt. It only deteriorates from there.

Complications by JHSC

He glances back down at the body in the alley below him, nose still ground in the dirt. Usually the Bat is up and fighting again within moments of a hit, blatantly disregarding whatever toll it’s taken on his body. He’s stupid like that. Hood watches, and somewhere in the back of his mind a voice is yelling at him about the unexpected fragility of the human brain, the innumerable dangers inherent in head injuries. And that voice starts to count.

His feet pound on the concrete sidewalk and he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder to know Jason’s booking it across the rooftops after him because he can feel it. Higher ground. Get topside. Better visibility, the persistently analytical part of him thinks, but realistically he knows that if—when—Jason catches him, they’ll need to be off the street. They’ll need to be somewhere private, for what Tim hopes Jason will do to him.

Casebook of Detective Timothy Drake by chibi_nightowl which is a whole series, the main fic of which is The Cleansing

Detective Timothy Drake's next big case finds him and his partner Gannon Malloy hot on the trail of a new killer in Gotham, one who slices their victims to shreds. The clues lead Tim to the most unexpected of places, causing him to leverage tools he doesn't like to admit he even has in his arsenal…the Red Hood, Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Batman.

The Caroline Chronicles by glaciya for SociallyAwkwardFox

Tim runs into Jason while he's disguised as Caroline Hill. Jason doesn't see through the disguise and becomes increasingly fond of this mysterious woman. Shenanigans Ensue. ------ Tim scowls at Jason’s innocent act. “Miss?” he repeats, thinking for a moment Jason is mocking his disguise. “Uh, Mrs. or- fuck- it’s probably, Doctor, right?” “You…” don’t know who I am, Tim realizes. “You can call me Caroline.” “It’s nice to meet you Caroline,” Jason says, and Tim almost laughs at how absurd it is to have Jason being polite to him. “I’m Red Hood.”

in an effort to get myself to read something other than the same 3 longfics over and over, i am going to report on my (non-fic) readings here. these posts will be tagged with "#jhsc reads".

First up:

The Denunciation, by Ernest Hemmingway (short story in: "The Fifth Column and Four Stories of the Spanish Civil War")

Ok 2 things to note: first, i skipped the first story in this book because it was super long and i dont have that kind of patience. second, i have read one (1) short story by Hemmingway ever in my life and it was in high school 20+ years ago. So i am going into this story knowing quite literally nothing about Hemmingway.

Having read the story i now know the following things:

- Hemmingway sure loves bars. like half this story was just an ode to his favorite cantina and you know what, thats valid

- Hemmingway sure loves cute men with accents. no explanation needed.

- Hemmingway sure hates fascists! At the end of the story, the waiter calls the cops (the government? the non-fascists?) on a fascist spy hanging out in the bar. after, the narrator calls up his gov't buddy and is like, "before you shoot that guy, tell him it was me who snitched on him."

does he do this to preserve the moral sanctity of his beloved bar and its staff? does he do it just to make the fascist dude (who, im pretty sure, is an ex-boyfriend) get really pissed off before being executed? at the end of the story he cooks dinner for his new, not-a-fascist boyfriend so like. idk. Hemmingway is a weird one.

It’s a wip, currently with three chapters up. I’ve really liked it so far though. This is a pre- whole family together thing. And Joker dies. Always a plus. Not a good Talia fic though, so be warned.

It’s Tim-centric, but Jason, Tim, and Damian all get to know each other as they’re trekking across the world away from people that want to kill them or otherwise. Good times. Definitely not good Talia in this one, and Ra’s is a total pedophile, just so you’re aware.

i don’t think i ever posted this + it happened over a year ago, but someone brought this back up again at work today, and somehow the supervisors found out and we all got in trouble and they made us all sit and read the bullying/harassment workbooks again this morning. i think of this every time i have to email him my jhsc reports. every time i obsessively triple check a work email, it’s specifically so i don’t end up fucking up like this guy. if i sent a typo like this to 38 people i’d just walk into the ocean and die.

The Festival of Lights! Grab the family, spin the dreidel, and load up your plate with latkes. Below are my Top 5 Favorite stories:

“C’mon, Stevie. There’s no way I’m lettin’ you spend the holidays all alone. Besides, Ma’s expectin’ you, and if you don’t show she’s gonna be real upset,” Bucky prods, poking his toe into Steve’s side. They’re sprawled out on Steve’s ratty old sofa, Steve perched on one end, intently focused on whatever he’s drawing in that sketchbook of his, while Bucky takes up the rest of the couch by stretching across the cushions.

Steve’s pencil stills against the page, and he sets it down, a frown tugging at the corners of his lips as he fixes a thoroughly unimpressed stare onto Bucky. “Using your Ma to guilt me into crashing your holiday celebrations is a dirty, dirty trick, Barnes.”

“How many times do I hafta tell you, you ain’t crashin’ anything. We want you there,” Bucky assures, and bends down so his head falls into Steve’s line of sight, which has dropped back down to his sketchbook. Bucky’s practically lying in his lap now, and he reaches a hand up to touch Steve’s cheek, soft and gentle. “I want you there.”

Steve walks away from him, leads him out of the burning factory and into the surrounding forest, the air thickened by smoke and tension, and Bucky follows. He watches the newly-straightened line of Steve's back, the newly-broadened span of his shoulders, and thinks, There weren't supposed to be any more miracles when the temple fell.

Maybe this one slipped through.

To Steve, Hanukkah - or Chanukah, as the Barnes referred to it - meant spending time with Bucky's family in their tiny three bedroom apartment, the smell of Mama Barnes's fried potato pancakes filling every nook and cranny of the room. It meant listening as Bucky taught Rebecca the traditional Hebrew songs his mother had taught him, which her mother had taught her, even if Steve didn't understand any of the words.

It meant leaning into Bucky's chest, watching the candles burn lower and lower, and enjoying the closeness as their mothers whispered in the background.

Not all of Bucky's memories are back - specifically, not the ones of them from before the war. Bucky knows who he is, for the most part, but he doesn't remember Them, and it hurts. It hurts because he has Bucky back, but not really, not in the way Steve wants him, and they aren't sure he'll ever remember.

It hurts, but Steve's okay. As long as he has Bucky, he's okay.
