A thought I had, (this isn't a fully thought out meta, just an impression of sorts.)

Something about Wei Wuxian's inherited vengeance.

Where did Wei Wuxian get that vengeance from? Mild-mannered Jiang Fengmian? Benevolent and kind Jiang Yanli? Cangse Sanren, who Wei Wuxian remembers saying something along the lines of remember the good things people do for you not the bad? Wei Changze?

The child of Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze would've likely done something along the lines of protecting the common people and fighting for justice during the Sunshot campaign, but did Wei Wuxian do that?

No, I tell you truly, Wei Wuxian is also the child of Yu Ziyuan. Did they have anything resembling a healthy relationship? No. But the child of Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze wouldn't slaughter thousands in unholy vengeance. Wouldn't extract oceans of blood for every drop stolen.

But the child of Yu Ziyuan would.

That isn't to say, he's only the child of Yu Ziyuan, no, we see glimpses of the influences of his other parental figures throughout the story.

Look at how he doesn't flinch from leaving the proverbial (paradise) mountain to save the wen remnants (CSSR), look at his compassion for the common people (Jiang Yanli); His sense of loyalty (Wei Changze), level headedness (Jiang Fengmian).

Something about how conscious he is of debt. Does that stem from his inherent preference of righteous action? His desire to do right? Yes. But I wouldn't discount his awareness of debt also coming from a quasi-maternal figure like Yu Ziyuan. Now there is a woman aware of debt, what she owes and what is owed to her.

Everyone is shaped by the adult figures in their life, and we inherit many things from them, such as traumas, perspectives and traits.

I posit Wei Wuxian is no different. But, just like Wei Wuxian, we aren't defined by our parental figures.

Lan Siwen has inherited grandpa wwx's terrible naming sense? His spiritual bunny has a pun name, his sword probably has a pun name, and if he ever acquires a kid, he probably gives the kid a pun name too. Or maybe he's like his great-grandma cssr, who named her baby "baby."

I don't really think Wei Wuxian has bad naming sense (afaik the only "silly" name he ever chose was Little Apple, since Jiang Fengmian named Suibian, and Jin Ling's courtesy name is actually quite beautiful)...but Siwen digs out the generation poem from Sizhui's maternal family and uses that to choose his child's formal name. i am suddenly thinking a lot about jiang cheng and jiang fengmian, specifically in how jiang fengmian—while not being outright cruel to jiang cheng—gives us no reason to believe that he is proud of or pleased with jiang cheng due to jiang cheng’s 1) penchant of maintaining a certain status quo/refusal to take risks and 2) the similarities of his personality to yu ziyuan. and yet, the time we see jiang cheng put himself in the danger, take a risk, defy yu ziyuan, is when he is putting himself in yu ziyuan’s own line of fire to protect wei wuxian from zidian, all while the wens are there and the threat they pose is dangerously tangible. and jiang fengmian is not even there to see it, let alone live long enough to hear of the events.

jfm is pretty happy about it, because his daughter is happy! plus, considering all the Other sect leaders or heirs she could potentially marry, lan zongzhu is one of the likeliest to be Nice to her

yzy meanwhile is Conflicted. on the one hand: the highest ranked young master in the cultivation world? talk about marrying well! and a sect leader too!! on the other hand, he’s annoyingly un-patriarchal (just like jfm). why, she saw him stop and talk to a baby lan disciple about frogs the other day!!

lqr is … Stressed at first, given qhj’s marital situation. he’s secretly having war flashbacks when his nephew starts making doe eyes at a girl. the elders are running their mouths about weak cultivation and Improper Upbringing. well, at least she seems ladylike and proper, at least to his eye. then one day he observes jiang guniang with circles under her eyes because she stayed up to bake waybread to give lwj and a pack of disciples for a night hunt and he says “mn. she’ll do.”

There is something so suck about Wei Wuxian watching Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian tell Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng their emotionally constipated equivalent of "I love you" and then get only "Die for my kids please"

Something that always bugs me is that the way fanfic authors have it, there's absolutely nothing between 'beloved son treated and raised precisely the same as the two blood siblings in the blood based ruling lineage' and 'despised and excluded indentured servant psychologically manipulated into having no self worth cut off from any emotional support'. This is, historically, a very, VERY recent binary, as the fostering system outgrows things like orphanages and the idea of the nuclear family is cemented.

There is a whole range of different statuses that exist between those two extremes just in Western society, and more than that outside of what I already know. Wardship, for example. Fostering without adoption. Room and board apprenticeship.

Wwx is older than jc. Him being adopted and legitimised, despite not being jiang, would cause a succession crisis. By rights, as the eldest male (and prodigious and well liked besides) he would be first to inherit in some people's eyes. Being adopted formally in this way would cause those rumours of bastardry madame yu was always banging on about (though I'm never convinced those rumours were as prevalent as she believed). Jfm would lose reputation and status, yzy would take a tremendous hit to her reputation, jc's place as heir would suddenly be cast into uncertainty, coming under intense scrutiny as people suddenly feel as though they had a choice in who to support, and wwx would be forced into a role and potential future he has absolutely no desire for. And by putting him in a position where he could become head of jiang, there's the risk that he might assassinate jc to become the undisputed heir, something impossible if he isn't brought into the family officially. Would wwx ever dream of doing so? No! Not even slightly! But it is a valid fear of the time and culture, jgy just proves that worst case scenario.

Instead of being the child prodigy coming out of nowhere, the son of respected rogue cultivators so generously taken in the jiang and well trained, suddenly he'd be 'proof' of infidelity, both families involved would become scandals, even post-humeously. As jgy and mxy prove, being a bastard is a lower social status than the right hand man of the sect heir, head disciple of a major sect. Now wrapped in gossip and scandal, they would no longer be called the prides of yunmeng.

And then of course that kind of divisive succession would backfire horrendously when lotus pier is burned and jc tries to rebuild the clan while wwx goes demonic cultivator! It would be DISASTROUS for the jiang, jc having lost a lot of his legitimacy and political support, wwx's now filthy reputation being tied even tighter to the clan, reflecting on them so much more. Worst case gossip would be that the jiang as a whole are turning to demonic cultivation. People who wanted wwx for heir would be in a very dangerous position! People who disliked jc as heir would make it even harder for him! Not that the jiangs would/could have predicted the war and the burning of the sect but fr it would have made an already nigh impossible situation even harder and more volatile.

And it's not like wwx is treated purely like a servant! He isn't going round fetching tea and carrying jcs sword and keeping one step behind. He eats every meal with them, he gets pocket money from them, he is openly and pretty universally considered siblings with the other two, and nobody except yzy acts like it's weird, or he's acting above his station for it (though people like the wens and jin aren't above trying to use that 'son of a servant' thing when they're targeting him to get their own way).

Yes, yzy is deeply insecure and blames him, yes during their goodbyes jc gets hugs and wwx gets orders. They're far from perfect. That's the most affection jc ever got from either of them. Jyl got nothing, she wasn't there. Which is pretty representative of her treatment from her parents, ngl. But wwx had support from jc, had sorta paternal support and a safe authority figure in jfm, had maternal support and care from jyl (though she shouldn't have had to, but that's a different conversation). There are actual family servants (yzy's twins) who grew up with her and were trained for it and they act very differently to wwx. For all yzy throws her weight around and jfm is a bit of a doormat, wwx grew up well cared for and well loved.

The fact that the family as a whole was pretty messed up and his part in it made it worse? That's on the family members themselves. His never arriving would not have fixed that family. For wwx, genuinely, there really wasn't anywhere else he could really go once he was orphaned. If he hadn't died on the streets perhaps he could have made it as a civilian working for someone else, dabbling in cultivation because we know him.

The wen and jin would have eaten him alive. The lans? Don't make me laugh. I love a good 'wwx gets betrothed to lwj as teens and he moves to gusu and Fixes Everything' as much as the next person but let's not kid ourselves, canon wwx would have ended up whipped to death or expelled with the way he is. As a visiting disciple he got so many punishments and kicked out not even halfway through the year! Him living there with lwj as adults is due to him 'redeeming' himself through mystery solving and lwj being fully, openly ready to ditch the sect for him. Even then they're constantly on the road night hunting and lwj being the lightning rod of all of wwx's trouble making tendencies (and being 100% down to breaking the rules with him without enacting punishment). They might accept him now but it would not have happened without lwj doing it first (and the juniors all loving him lol).

The nie? Maybe, but that would have left NHS in pretty much the exact same position as jc: inferior second fiddle, unskilled, constantly compared to him. Wwx would be in the exact same position of being pressured to tone himself down and keep his dangerous ideas to himself, and NHS would have double the fear of inevitably losing both his brothers. And of course, the nie aren't exactly as patient and laid back as the jiang sect as a whole, with their hyper aggressive murder resentment swords. The first sign of wwx acting 'outside' of the clans best interests and getting risky and he's going straight down those stairs the same way as jgy.

Tldr: there's more options to raise a kid than full adoption or abused servitude, even today, and though officially adopting wwx would have made everything SO much worse, his other options would not have survived him. He deserved better with the jiangs but frankly so did the blood kids (and the mother and the father). All three were emotionally neglected and adoption would not have fixed that.

This is why I believe that if wwx had been even a day younger than jc everyone would have been so much happier.

There was one particular story with him being an awesome General who cares more about his soldiers and the lives of the people he's protecting and thus deciding to surrender rather than fight fully knowing that they would not be able to win. So you know how theres this TikTok Sound of someone called Nick who asks for the WLAN Password and its I Love You Nick and Nick is in a lot of denial about being lovers even though their anniversary is coming up?

I found a fic that was basically WY and LZ in a relationship, and WY/LZ (but more likely WY) didn’t realise that they were anything more than friends, and it was very funny.

I don't understand why people say Yu Ziyuan is the better parent while Jiang Fengmian is worse, whereas in the entire MDZS, Jiang Fengmian is the only one who tried to teach Jiang Cheng right from wrong (read how JFM tried to teach JC how to control his temper and his words after Xuanwu Cave).

But what about Yu Ziyuan? Aside from instilling the idea "Your Father doesnt like you" and mentally belittling her own children, what did she ever teach to Jiang Cheng? To Jiang Yanli?

She taught JC how to keep feeling unreasonable jealousy and envy of others. JFM never praised JC, but has YZY ever acknowledge JC either? What she did was to tell him that he is not good enough. Never good enough. What she did was keep comparing him to other people's children without ever acknowledging her own son's capability.

She taught JYL that the act of affection between people is servitude. Her, giving her Xiongdi a peeled lotus seed as an affectionate gesture between loved ones, was implied as humbling herself, as she was told "You are not a servant!"

Look at what good teaching this woman gave to her children.

I will never understand why anyone thinks Jiaojiao's account of YZY and JFM's courtship is accurate. She wasn't there! She's from a Wen subsidiary clan and she wasn't even born yet! Also she hates YZY and specifically felt humiliated by her. She is spreading nasty rumours to make herself feel better about YZY calling her her inferior and stepping on her. Beyond that I don't get how people think that JFM didn't outwardly favour WWX? he's more affectionate towards him and gets along with him better. He's also conflict avoidant and doesn't want to start shit with his wife. There's no amount of loving WWX that will change that part of his personality. Moreover he's already only picking JC up in the single digits when he's like 10, I do not think "my child has bad vibes like his mother" is really a factor in play there or if it is it's one that speaks very poorly of him. I also don't get feeling the need to defend WWX from the idea that his presence made an already tense situation worse. He's literally a starving orphan child in need of a home. Neither YZY or JFM's behaviour is on him, but if you think his presence in that household didn't exacerbate YZY's anger and JC's insecurity because of the contrast in how he treated JC and WWX as well as his past connection to WWX's mother you are just in denial. He makes sure that he gets to go to Gusu lectures and shows up in person to smooth things over when WWX starts shit, he picks him up and cuddles him as a child, he spends lots of time and energy searching for him to bring him home in the first place! None of that is at all wrong in fact it's a rare JFM win but it's way more than being a present for JC. Which again would be fine if he wasn't so willing to give up on his own kid for the crime of resembling his other parent making the contrast in easy affection obvious. He obviously loves JC but he doesn't understand or like him and he's terrible at hiding that. The absentminded well meaning father who's kind of a dick to his kid because he wasn't in love with his wife is a classic historical drama/wuxia trope anyway. You can see it in Joy of Life and Nirvana in Fire it's just that in both of those cases the protagonist gets to tell the dad his son loves him and he needs to do better and his relationship with his son is saved.

• remnant air nomad wei wuxian (air nomads being a minority of wanderers, like his parents) secretly taken in by the jiang clan after being discovered as the young avatar.

• He's raised as a fire bender as part of the lightning fire Jiang clan of Yunmeng, a firebending clan with the biggest amount of lightning benders and who teach the art, with Jiang Cheng and yzy specializing in it. We wuxian was taught by Jiang Fengmian to redirect it. Yzy comes from a smaller subsect, jfm is a firebender who doesn't really look the part but has adequate strength as clan leader, shijie is a non-bender and a disappointment, and Jiang Cheng has a rather aggressive bending style. The clan wears purple and has a more Japanese style. Jiang cheng and Wei Wuxian are the twin prides of Yunmeng, brilliant firebenders often fighting in tandem.

• Also bending fire is the tyrant nation of the qishan wen, featuring brilliant non-bender wen qing and underestimated fire bender wen ning. They have a similarly Japanese style.

• The Nies are rulers of qinghe and are less extravagant than their fellow earthbenders, the jins. Their earthbending has a classical aggressive and firm style. The second son is a notoriously weak nonbender. They wear the blacks and greens of the earth.

• The Jins of the Lanling kingdom are well known for extravagance similar to the inner city of Ba Sing Se. Their defining trait is the more common ability to bend metal, shown in the brilliant gold displays created by their most talented. Not that they are all actual metal benders, however, as displayed by Jin Guangshan himself. Many can bend only earth with a metal bending style swifter than that of the Nies. They wear the yellow of gold and dry earth. Jin Guangyao is a non bender (or a weak bender) and mo xuanyu is a normal bender, born to a nonbender mother. He's hopeless in metal bending, though. Jin zixun just sucks.

• The reclusive yet powerful Gusu tribes are lead by Lan Xichen and his uncle, the master waterbender similar to Pachu. They wear fur lined clothes similar to their water tribe counterparts but with a more Chinese fashion, especially pertaining to their inner clothes. They can be seen wearing the dazzling white of the water's spray and of ice as well as the tranquil blue of the water they bend. Their style is flexible and peaceful, as demonstrated by their twin jades. They hold themselves up to lofty standards and their elders can be inflexible. They still have token engagement necklaces.

• Wei Wuxian's air bison, Lil' Apple, is a nuisance.

• He wakes in the Cloud Recesses of Gusu after (almost?) being killed 13 years ago after the Qishan fire nation's attacks ended. Part of their seige included attacking the neighboring fire benders, the Jiangs (whose capital they destroyed) and the southern Gusu tribe (of which there is no north?). Only Wen Yuan remains to carry out the Wen bending style. Wei wuxian is rather peaceful and accepting of his fate after waking up again 13 years later, in the company of Gusu juniors, as well as metalbender Jin Ling and Ouyang Zhizhen, heir to a smaller clan.

• Wei Wuxian prefers airbending (which he was instructed to hide before the Sunshot Campaign) and excels in firebending, which he grew up with (although he cannot lightning bend. Maybe he can redirect it?) He can earthbend in a style less firm than the Nies an less extravagant than the Jins (not sure who taught him.) Waterbending is more difficult for him to get used to, primarily because of Gusu and their teaching techniques, as well as his tendency to observe, dodge, and strike rather than patiently use his enemies' strength against them. He does learn it, however, and becomes more comfortable with it after waking up, working in sync with Lan wangji (something he does with other elements, too, mainly air).

• Notable previous avatars include Lan An, Lan Yi, and Wen Mao.

• Baoshen Sanren should be a previous avatar, but because Wei Wuxian needs to lie about the core transfer that wouldn't work. So instead she is a reclusive airbending master who has her own temple instead of living in the mountains (wwx takes jc to an empty temple) and she taught wwx's mother as well as the airbending nomad Xiao Xingchen.

• Song Lan is anything but an Airbender. I don't want him to be a waterbender (so he isn't like a certain someone) so he'll be a firebender.

I mean, premarital sex is only really a problem if the parties don't get married. And the reason premarital sex was life ruining for JGY and Qin Su is uh, not the standard reason it ruins lives lol. The risk for Xuanli is fairly minimal because there's very little reason for Zixuan to drop dead before the wedding, and the match is wanted and approved of by both families. JC respects Yanli enough not to go ballistic about Zixuan knocking ber up before the wedding. Even if Zixuan had gotten gored on a nighthunt two days before the wedding, it's in both the Jiang and the Jin's best interests to claim that Xuanli had a secret wedding ceremony in private no for realsies and so the Jin heir she's carrying is totes legitimate!! Like JGS is not going to want to waste having an heir with ties to two great sects and Madam Jin loves Yanli like her own daughter. And the cultivation world as a whole will probably accept this polite fiction.

This is all very true! It's not so much "why do THEY get to do premarital sex while we, The Incest Couple--" because yeah, QS's high-risk high-reward gambit to force a shotgun wedding did indeed all go according to keikaku except for the part where oops! they're siblings.

It's more like... Xuanli didn't even have to do a high-risk high-reward shotgun wedding gambit. Everything was handed to them! Both sets of parents enthusiastically betrothed them! JZX didn't need to overcome any stigma to convince JFM and YZY that he was worthy of their daughter's hand. Yeah, he had to overcome WWX's dislike, but 1.) WWX's dislike (while disproportionate and uncompromising) is in response to JZX's personal words and actions re: JYL, not his background, and 2.) WWX has no real authority here. He can make JZX's life stressful, but his approval of the union is immaterial, especially one he and the Jiang sect have publicly severed ties. JC approves the union and that's that.

Granted, JZX didn't want to be married to JYL initially, but that almost makes it more galling from JGY's perspective? JZX publicly complains about his parents' choice of a bride for him, leading to fisticuffs with the Jiang head disciple that in turn lead to JFM cancelling the match despite JGS's objections... and JZX isn't punished for this at all! In fact, JGS tries to reboot the match again later on! JC, meanwhile, defers to his sister's wishes and is willing to accept that JZX has changed. The betrothal is ready to go the second JZX catches feelings and manages to hold one (1) functional conversation with JYL! And everyone who matters is so into the match that yes, they could get away with a fair bit of scandal.

Meanwhile, JGY's out here fighting tooth and nail to persuade both fathers to allow his chosen match, which is saying something given that he's so desperate to maintain JGS's approval that he's willing to orchestrate and conceal murders for him. And even the risk he takes on its own isn't enough! QS has to choose the nuclear option of "let me marry him or I disgrace us all" in order to strongarm her father! Qinyao have to assume a level of risk that Xuanli simply doesn't, and then they're punished for it by factors they couldn't have known.

(Of course, in actuality, out-of-wedlock pregnancy shouldn't be a problem for either couple, because abortifacients exist and both JYL and QS as noblewomen who are also cultivators would have had the means to safely procure them if needed, but shh.)

JFM and WCZ were not canonically in love, it's nit a change of CQL. In canon, he was not explicitly in love with Cangse Sanren either— it's all speculations and rumors incensed by YZY.

Many people (including myself) believe that JFM was in love with WCZ due to the way he treats WWX as opposed to JC and JYL, because JFM and WCZ really paralel JC and WWX.

WWX always gets son of a servant thrown at his face, but the way JFM did not set any boundaries in what he is to the family and the way WWX was both a brother and a servant to JC leads me to believe JFM and WCZ were very, very close.

Additionally, I find it interesting that we know nothing about what CSSR was to JFM beyond rumors, not even a glimpse of even a platonic dynamic, while we know much more (still little, but more) about his relationship with WCZ

Also going into realm of headcanon here, but I think it makes sense that JFM purposefully raised JC and WWX as brothers to avoid JC experiencing the heartbreak he himself did when WCZ left for CSSR. (He still did, in a familial rather than romantic way, but heartbreak nonetheless)
