I MET JOHN FINNEMORE
It is a thing that happened and I still kind of can't believe it
I went to Tall Tales and it was so lovely and there were such talented people (including Susanna Pearce of the JFSP musical element who sang two songs from a musical she's working on) and JF did a 35 minute staged reading with three other people of something he's working on that's essentially fanfiction of one of my favorite book series and it was so much fun
AND THEN I STOPPED HIM IN THE AISLE AFTER AND TOLD HIM HOW MUCH I LOVE HIS WORK AND HOW MUCH IT'S MEANT TO BE ABLE TO, IN MY WORST MOMENTS, JUST SWITCH ON HIS SHOWS AND CARRY ON AND FEEL BETTER
AND HE WAS SO NICE! I HAD ALWAYS HEARD HE WAS NICE AND HE REALLY WAS, I'M SURE HE HEARS THIS KIND OF THING ALL THE TIME BUT HE WAS SO SWEET IN HOW HE RESPONDED, I'M KIND OF FREAKING OUT, IT JUST FELT SURREAL BECAUSE I WAS TALKING TO HIM AND EVERY SO OFTEN A SYNAPSE WOULD ACTIVATE AND I'D BE LIKE "I'M TALKING TO JOHN FINNEMORE RIGHT NOW"
Anyway, sorry for yelling, I'm just very not over it. Didn't get a photo because I was too chicken to ask in the moment and then too chicken afterward to go up to him later at the bar and then our cab came
Red letter day, is all I can say

Just to note- somehow, not only is this not the only time in fiction that a man buying a woman in whom he is romantically interested a dog collar actually turns out to be a sweet thing to do, it's ALSO not the only time that he does this in a British university town (though when Pidge does it it's at Cambridge, not Oxford, and for different reasons).
Ever since I first listened to Here's What We Do, I wondered whether John Finnemore got the idea from Gaudy Night, as IDK why but Sayers seems totally up his alley and there are a lot of weirdly similar details. I will note that if I hadn't previously read Gaudy Night I'd have had no idea what the JCR was when listening to HWWD, so for that, thanks Dorothy!
“The man was very much interested,” he observed, “in my bull-terrior bitch. Extremely plucky animal, but reckless and obstinate fighter. Personally, he said, he preferred greyhounds. He told me where I could get my name and address put on the collar, but I said that could wait. Now we’re out of the town, you can try it on.”
Lord Peter Wimsey to Harriet Vane, Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers
One of the few times, if not the only time, buying and offering the woman you love a dog collar is actually sweet and thoughtful.

All excellent recommendations! Worth noting that while most of Souvenir Programme is pretty straightforward sketch comedy (with S3E6 and S7E6 being standouts that do something a bit experimental in a super cool way), JFSP S9 is a totally different kind of show. It needs a bit of of time to get used to but it will make you CRY.
There's also Double Acts! It's harder to find (legitimately at least...) but they're half-hour two-hander radio plays that range from very good to utterly fantastic. For fans of Good Omens, I'd especially recommend The Goliath Window, Hot Desk, and Penguin Diplomacy (especially Penguin Diplomacy), but you can't really go wrong.
If anything, I found JF's Job minisode to feel a lot like a Double Act (just with more people lol)- it had a central emotional through line between two people, but it also has a very clever plot full of little random Chekhov's guns that all come together beautifully in the end.
A crash course in all things John Finnemore!
Now that we've all suffered watched Good Omens S2, and realized how incredible the one and only John Finnemore is - or possibly just wondered who the hell that man is, let me give you a little introduction to his works!
The most important one first:
youtube
He'll probably hate that this will be first one, but ya'll need to know about this. Yes, you will be playing it for the rest of your lives. Yes, you will inflict it on everyone you know. No, you will NOT regret it.
Next up we have the most wonderful Cabin Pressure where he plays Arthur Shappey (after writing the whole damn thing - yes, its funny as hell with an oustanding cast, and yes it will break your heart but i can't stress it enough, it will have a happy ending! Yes, that's a spoiler, but I think this one will be overlooked as we've been through enough heartbreak for a while, no?) It stars John himself as Arthur, Benedict Cumberbatch as Martin, Roger Allam as Douglas and Stephanie Cole as Carolyn. (There are guest appearances by the great Anthony Head as Herc!)
youtube
Here's some small excerts from each episode - you can purchase them here or keep an eye on BBC Radio (4), sometimes they do repeats!
Then we have his wonderful Souvenir Programme which IS repeating on Radio 4 right now!
youtube
And last but not least because that one will forever have the specialest place in my heart - Arthur Shappey's Lockdown Diary!
youtube
There's 26 episodes, getting us through the very first Lockdown back in 2020! Just check them out - I've always adored the man (because he's a sweetheart and the nicest man I've ever met, he's smart and funny and comes up with some insane storytelling!)
So yeah, this is all i can think of right now! Check out his stuff - and leave the man some love!
He deserves the damn world!!!

Ankylosaurus - share some of your favorite descriptive text
i need you to know that this was so hard for me to narrow down adjfklsda;jfda there are so many that I'm actually proud of!!!
So I'll make this easy on myself and post a snip from the latest scene I've been working on in Demigods. I hope you enjoy!!!
Eve had known Orin for thirteen years, and was still uncertain how she felt about him. She was not excited to see him again, after these long moons. Nor did she dread it. Orin was, after so long, more of an inevitability than a nuisance. He had arrived at the sanctuary with the Holy Commander and the rest of those elite chosen. Eve had not laid eyes on him since the day that the Holy Commander had plucked him out of their home sanctuary, in the southern niches of the capital city. For his prowess, it had been said. It was natural that he would be assigned to such a critical and sensitive mission. And he looked natural among the other men of the search detail, if a bit young. Eve found herself pausing atop the marble steps that led down into the walled courtyard. She had never been in the habit of paying Orin attention. They were not friends. They could never be friends. But just this once, he caught her interest. They’d trained that stoop out of his posture, she noticed. By the expanse of his shoulders beneath his pauldrons, by his towering height, by the way he stood confidently within the small circle of a few of his chatting peers, he almost looked every bit the man he’d long tried to be. But time had not yet relieved him of his boyish air. When he laughed along with the others, it was still a little too forceful, and uncertain in its forcefulness. When he spoke, he could not stop the way his eyes would glance towards the oldest of the lot to gauge their reactions. Eve could tell when a fellow paladin said something that must have been a joke at Orin’s expense, for she could see from afar how his embarrassment colored his ears, the back of his neck. He was highly skilled in his duties, but he was not one of them. Not yet. Eve looked away, then, and refocused on her true task. When she passed the small group of au Haulgen’s chosen, she heard a distinct falter in the words spoken—and then conversation redoubled, as if to compensate for the lull. Among them, Orin said not a word more.
#your honor she's a lesbian#<-this tag i realize will make a lot more sense once Orin says literally anything#writeblr#ask game#amwriting#writblr#writers on tumblr#asks#{roses there are many}

THANK YOU this is so incredibly sweet! This is probably the worst summary I've ever written for a fic but hopefully the source material inspo helps it speak for itself... though I'd be remiss not to recommend that people listen to Hot Desk first because a) the fic is very niche and I'd assume nigh on incomprehensible without it and b) I am basically compelled at this stage to recommend all JF's works to everyone who will listen.
For the fic recs meme: 7 and 10?
A fic that makes you think #writergoals
Series rather than a discrete fic, but: kissing is what lovers do (and we're not lovers) by @onlylostphysics
A vaguely canon-compliant friends-with-benefits scenario where they've been having sex since episode five but still don't kiss until episode nine, because they're both idiots who don't talk it through as a crew.
A fic that isn’t prose (poetry, text fic, etc.)
Pub Quiz by half_a_glass
The characters in Hot Desk go to a pub quiz, or rather they message each other before and after the pub quiz.
This is extremely niche, fic of a John Finnemore half-hour radio play, but it is so perfect.
#john finnemore#double acts#jfda#fic rec#ofmd#bc while i'm not up to date on ofmd fic now i want to check this one out!

A guide to John Finnemore (in particular his Double Acts) for the Good Omens S2 lovers, haters, and everyone in between (I promise, there's something for all of you!)
Found this in my drafts recently and honestly, I feel this is evergreen, so here y'all go:
As I mentioned semi-facetiously in my previous post, I don't care whether you loved or hated Good Omens S2- you're probably sleeping on John Finnemore. He's a super talented writer and while he's collaborated with other writers like Mitchell and Webb and Armando Iannucci before, I still think his best stuff is his solo stuff.
But where to start? Behold! I shall now recommend a different Double Act (that is, a different episode of his radio series of excellent half-hour two-hander comedies) for every kind of person who has reacted in literally any kind of way to Good Omens.
If you love stories about two people working on opposite sides in a conflict who over time break down each other's defenses to become valued friends despite the continued conflict between their sides, with some queer undertones: Unquestionably you want S2 E4, Penguin Diplomacy
If you loved Good Omens S2 because it's quiet, gentle, and romantic: S1 E6, Hot Desk
If you like quiet, gentle and romantic in principle but wish there was a bit more plot structure: Still Hot Desk
If you like quiet, gentle and romantic but watched Good Omens S2 and were like "this is quiet, gentle and romantic?!?!": DEFINITELY still Hot Desk
If you hate quiet, gentle and romantic and want something darker and more cynical: S1 E3, Red Handed
If you were meh on S2 but did find yourself enjoying the Job minisode: FREE ROLL! You can choose any Double Act at random and will probably enjoy it.
If you loved Good Omens S2 because you love characters who give off vibes of being dim yet helpful: Well, really you want to meet Arthur in Cabin Pressure, but from Double Acts you'll do great with S2 E5, Here's What We Do, and in a very different way S2 E2, Mercy Dash
If you loved Good Omens S2 because lesbians: S2 E3, The Rebel Alliance
If you like lesbians in theory but wish that Good Omens S2 had maybe sketched out theirs a bit more: Still try Rebel Alliance
If you were annoyed by the minisodes because there wasn't enough old-timey dialogue in the olden-day bits: S1 E4, The Goliath Window
If you like the Victorian minisode because you like the era: check out S2 E1, The Queen's Speech, which literally has Queen Victoria in it
If you think that Crowley making gentle fun of Aziraphale's magic tricks is entertaining: try S2 E6, The Wroxton Box
If you like relationship dynamics where one half is trying/pretending to be cool and the other one has absolutely no interest in it and likes the first half just how they are: try Here's What We Do
If you enjoy the whole corporate-nonsense aspect of Good Omens: give S1 E2, WYSINNWYG a whirl
If you think that one of the main flaws of S2 was that it didn't have Mr Young in it anymore: S1 E1, A Flock of Tigers
If you like Good Omens because you like fandom and fanfic: S1 E5, English for Pony Lovers
And, if you love the idea of a cliffhanger but also want the satisfaction of knowing there's an amazing ending coming: Wait on Double Acts and just listen to Cabin Pressure. And when you get to the end of Yverdon-les-Bains, before you move on to Zurich just take a moment to remember all of us who nearly died for two years waiting for the finale.
Anyway, happy listening!

I am still delighted that the third sketch of the second episode of the eighth series of John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme was the speech that was going on in the background for part of the “Rebel Alliance” episode of the second series of Double Acts.
