So I just finished a read of the gospels and I decided to read Ecclesiastes after seeing a tumblr post a while ago about how it was kind of really cathartic to read with the current state of the world and whatnot.

I don’t know if I’m interpreting this right, because this chapter has my head spinning a little, but if I am seeing this right, Solomon is saying that he has seen everything that goes on on earth and his conclusion is not only that everything is vanity, but also that “What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted.”

I think this is a good summary of the world, not just the one we live in today but the world that has existed since Adam and Eve sinned.

The world is hopelessly broken if not for God. We cannot fix the brokenness in the world or even inside ourselves. It’s all crooked, and it cannot be made straight without God.

And what is lacking cannot be counted. If you take God out of the picture, life is meaningless and there’s a vast gulf in it. If God is missing from life, the amount of lack a person experiences is indescribable and cannot be measured.

Those of you who know my story know I struggle with religious OCD, specifically about whether or not I am saved. Running parallel to that excruciating anxiety is a deep, personal, felt certainty that nothing in my life matters without God. If I don’t have God, I have nothing. Sure, there are other things that are important to me—friends, family, etc.—but those things are most valuable to me in light of them being a gift from God to me.

And I guess that since I feel this very deeply in my own life, it’s just kind of nice to see someone expressing this nearly 3,000 years ago. Truly, nothing has changed. There is nothing new under the sun. Thousands of years have passed, and even if thousands more pass, it will all be the same: nothing in this world can satisfy the desires God is meant to fill.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. —Psalm 73:25-26

There is no reference in the text to any other faith besides Christianity, which would also have been unusual at this time.

According to the Frankfurt Archaeology Museum, reliable evidence of Christian life in the northern Alpine regions of the Roman Empire only goes as far back as the 4th century AD.

‘Fantastic find’ made possible by modern technology

Wolfram Kinzig, a church historian and professor from the University of Bonn, helped Scholz to decipher the inscription.

“The silver inscription is one of the oldest pieces of evidence we have for the spread of the New Testament in Roman Germania, because it quotes Philippians 2:10–11 in Latin translation,” Kinzig explained in an interview published on the University of Bonn’s website.

“It’s a striking example of how Biblical quotations were used in magic designed to protect the dead,” said Kinzig.

Peter Heather, a professor of medieval history at King’s College London with a specialist interest in the evolution of Christianity, described the discovery as a “fantastic find.”

Heather, who wasn’t involved in the research, told CNN:

“The capacity to be able to decipher the writing on that rolled-up piece of silver is extraordinary. This is something that’s only possible now with modern technology.

If they’d found it 100 years ago they wouldn’t have known what it was. Silver amulets are probably going to contain some kind of magical scroll but you don’t know what – it could be any religion.”

He added:

“You’ve got evidence of Christian communities in more central parts of the empire but not in a frontier town like that in Roman Germany so that is very unusual, well it’s unique. You’re pushing the history of Christianity in that region back.”

I should log the fuck off but like. The tyranny, the violence that you’re so terrified of? I’ve seen some of it up close. I’ve lived in the aftermath of a right wing coup. I’ve attended five funerals in the space of a week, of much-too-young men (with much-too-young children) who were killed by US government policy in a very real and direct way.

And then I have returned home to an election between Hillary Clinton - who openly bragged in her memoir of helping to facilitate said right-wing coup - and Donald Trump, whose entire campaign revolved around demonizing my former neighbors and friends, and promising to wield the violence of the American state against them and people like them. I have held my nose and voted for Hillary fucking Clinton, because I know a would-be fascist dictator when I see one and I understand what harm reduction is.

And then I have gone to immigration protest after immigration protest after immigration protest. In fact it’s no exaggeration to say that basically all of my human contact during the entire pandemic year was weekly immigration protests. I’ve stood up and argued against off-brand Richard Spencer fuckheads in city hall meetings and stared them down when they showed up to counter protest and intimidate. I have cried more tears than I’ve probably cried during the entire rest of my adult life over murdered and brutalized immigrant children who could so so so terrifyingly easily have been children that I personally know and love.

I’ve voted for Biden and hoped that he might keep his promises and dreaded that he wouldn’t - because I know what the Democratic party’s track record is, because I’ve worked with immigration activists who are many decades older than me and who have been betrayed over and over and over. I’ve watched over four years, sickened but not shocked, as the Biden administration did exactly that. I’ve watched Harris’ unbelievably callous response to asylum seekers fleeing for their lives (“Do not come”). I’ve watched as the New York Times and other media that screamed condemnation from the rooftops about Trump’s immigration policies justified those exact same policies with the tiniest bit of airbrushing, and anytime I criticized those policies I’ve gotten the predictable crowd of DNC fans having hysterics at me about how I must want Trump to win again. To my own shame I’ve been quieter than I probably should have been in my criticisms because I was so sick of dealing with those people.

And then I’ve held my nose and voted for Harris and STILL gotten accused of being a vote-abstaining traitor who should be deported the moment I expressed the tiniest ounce of frustration with the Democratic party - because you needed somewhere to put your rage, and you either don’t understand or (even more ghoulishly) don’t care what the violence of deportation entails, and because apparently anything less than choking myself on the DNC’s dick makes Donald Trump my fault.

I do not wish any of this on you, because I’m not a fucking monster.

Instead I wish you enough moral and mental and emotional clarity to understand exactly what it is that you’ve said, and enough scraps of conscience to regret it as you ought.
