"Wait, Wataru, who told you this was our child?" Hiyori demanded, holding the matcha-haired baby at arm's length.
"Oh, one of the idols with silvery hair, I can't keep track of them all." Wataru flippantly answered, his own hair mimicking his movements.
"Did he look like Christopher Lambert in the Mortal Kombat movie?" Hiyori asked.
"Almost identical. Why?"
"Nagisa Ran..." Hiyori hissed.

This job had turned out to be a little more than they wanted for jobs. The goal was always get in, take out the linchpin, then get back out. Sometimes they took evidence or materials pertinent to letting others deal with the fallout, the rescues, the legal stuff.
Sometimes things got messy somewhere between "get in" and "get out." Sometimes the fallout was immediate, so they had to stay just a little longer, do a little more to keep their entire purpose from failing. This was one of those times. The leader had gone down easily and was now a bloody smear in his office. As powerful and somehow unknown as they were, nobody was ever prepared for their sudden appearance in their private quarters and offices. All it would have taken was a simple word, and they would be gone.
And then she walked through the door. Some seemingly random girl dressed in nothing but rags and bruises and dried blood and chains. One of the slaves they had come after him for. You could only account for so much. Sometimes there would be a random unscheduled underling walking in unannounced—and they were dealt with swiftly when they did. But they were not prepared at all for a child.
She, similarly, was unprepared for them. Or the blood that arced rather dramatically across the wall behind them. Or the dead, staring eyes of the man who had enslaved her. She did what any sane person would have done in that situation and she screamed bloody murder.
She tried to, anyway. They were not prepared for a child, but they were prepared for witnesses. A hastened silencing spell for the few seconds it would last was all the time the man needed to reach her and cover her mouth. The girl wriggled and bit, but the man was strong and his clawed metal gloves just made her teeth hurt.
The intruders looked at each other urgently. Whoever had sent her to the room would expect her back. How soon? They couldn't just leave her here, both as a witness and as one who they had come to rescue. And she was crying now on top of things. The man's masked partner made hand motions at him, and he shook his head and looked pointedly at things in response. A whole silent conversation. It ended with a sigh and a dropped head, both in resignation.
The masked one moved between the crying child and the body and the gore and the blood, leaning down a few inches so their masked face was near the child's. She removed her mask to reveal a face very similar to that of the man who held her. "We're going to get you out of here, but you have to stay quiet and do exactly what we say," she said in a barely-audible hiss. They were instructions, not an offer.
The girl's eyes widened, somehow feeling more terror than before. Her crying and thrashing intensified, prompting the man to sigh again, somehow in more annoyance than before. And the previous sigh had sounded pretty annoyed.
"We don't have time for this," he said, his own voice low and rough. He seemed about to shift his hold on her, but the woman placed a light hand on his arm and shook her head.
"I've got it," she said, something bordering on a disapproving tone in her voice. To the child she said, "You'll be safe."
And then there was something like a flash and she was dropped on the floor. The two shiny people were gone, but so was the floor that she recognized. And the walls, the ceiling, the things in the room. There were two men at a kitchen counter, turning to look down at her. One of them had way too many eyes and the other didn't have enough.
Her mouth freed once more, she screamed.
~~~~~~~~
"You can't do that!" Teer cried in exasperation, his arms flung in the air to emphasize the emotion. "It took us ages to convince her we weren't going to kill her, and longer still to figure out what the heck was going on."
Kiono sat guiltily in an armchair, arms wrapped around her knees and her eyes looking anywhere but at him. She said nothing.
"Your reaction was pretty funny," Akaros said unhelpfully from his place in the corner of the room. He might have said more, but Teer shot him a look that silenced him—an impressive feat given Teer's complete lack of facial expressions.
"We couldn't take her with us," Kiono said at length. "We—"
"You what, Kiono. She was terrified!"
"We had to take out the whole operation then and there," said Kitano, startling Teer. He'd nearly forgotten the man was in his own corner. "We weren't bringing along a child."
"Okay," conceded Teer. "That's a pretty good reason. But you teleported her here alone with no explanation to me or her."
"There wasn't time," Kiono said at the same time Kitano said, "Next time we'll send a note."
All eyes turned to him.
"We'll write them ahead of time."
"That wouldn't help now. I know what's happening now. But you still..." he sighed and pinched the bridge of his mask's nose. They had been lucky there had been a fresh batch of cookies available to help them calm the girl who had suddenly been teleported into their kitchen in the middle of the night. "Did you get everyone else out?"
The two aasimar gave a singular nod. It didn't happen often, but sometimes their shared history was evident. Their goals aligned, freeing slaves from their shackles and ending abuses.
"Good, at least it ended well. Was her family...?"
Only Kiono responded, with silence and a small, slow shake of her head.
Now it was Akaros' turn to sigh as he pushed himself to a proper standing position. "I'll get her some proper bed linens, then. I'm sure Kiki will be delighted to know she has another sister."
“Looks pretty fresh for an Old Master, doesn’t she?” said Raffles. His tone was strange. I could only suppose that he was jealous of my success. “So Craggs said. I hardly looked at it myself.” “Well, look now—look closely. By Jove, I must have faked her better than I thought!” -Nine Points of the Law
raffles originally saying hes only posing as an artist but then doing a perfect forgery in one afternoon is so funny to me. cannot stop himself from lying for no damn reason gjhgjf
