Umphrey’s McGee’s Kris Myers to Miss the Rest of 2023 for Rotator Cuff Surgery
- Jason Bonham, Duane Trucks, Ben Atkind and Jeremy Salken to rotate in UM’s drum chair
Drummer Kris Myers will miss the rest of Umphrey’s McGee’s 2023 tour dates to undergo and recover from rotator cuff surgery.
Four October concerts have been moved to April 2024. But Umphrey’s’ remaining gigs will go on with a revolving door of drummers - including Jason Bonham, Widespread Panic’s Duane Trucks, Goose’s Ben Atkind and Big Gigantic’s Jeremy Salken - filling in.
Guitarist Jake Cinninger and percussionist Andy Farag will also “spend a little time behind the kit to help round things out,” the band said.
“I love and appreciate you all and please take comfort in knowing that everything will be OK and I’ll be playing again soon with my favorite band,” Myers said in a statement.

ALBUM REVIEW: Big Gigantic — Free Your Mind
Big Gigantic is back after four years with their studio album Free Your Mind and it is exactly what fans have been yearning for from the duo. Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken, the two members of Big Gigantic, infuse horns, saxophones, and vocals into a number of their electronic dance tracks — a specialty of the group. Their sound has evolved greatly from their previous album, Brighter Future.  Big Gigantic’s production of sound and the guests on the album elevate the duo from before.
The album includes the previously released singles  “Friends,” featuring Ashe, and “You’re The One,” featuring Nevve. Consisting of several guest vocalists and rappers on many of the tracks, Free Your Mind sounds like a big party that anyone would want to go to. The party started in the recording studio where Lalli said working with all their collaborators was “awesome, the best.”
The two jazz musicians at heart successfully created a groovy album. When it comes to the themes of the album, Big Gigantic wanted to take next steps towards a brighter future (which was also their previous album’s name). In an interview with Westword, Salken said, “Some topics came up in what we wanted to talk about, and we sort of released our singles in that pattern. So we released 'You're the One' a few months back — that being like, you're the one, you're your person, you're everything. So I think in the story of how to free your mind, that was the first step. Then we went on to talk about friendships, like the song we did with Ashe called 'Friends.' Then 'Burning Love' — love, relationships, all those sorts of things. Those are the things that we wanted to touch upon in terms of what the album was about. And then we got to the title track, and we like to try and do something special in terms of telling a story through music."
In celebration of this album release, Big Gigantic will take Free Your Mind on the road with a unique North American tour. The Free Your Mind 3D Experience tour uses 3D cameras and a huge 3D LED screen to produce spectacular visual effects. Creating a mesmerizing show along with playing instruments live makes Big Gigantic a unique and special EDM group.

EDM: It’s What You Feel
I want you to think about your favorite song. Got it? Now, let me ask you this: What is the song about? What message does it send? My personal favorite (”Yellow Bird” by Pretty Lights) is about love, fascination, peace, and serendipity; however, there are no lyrics.
DJ Derek Vincent Smith (better known as Pretty Lights) evokes these emotions through his use of rhythmic, psychedelic, and dance-friendly beats.
For Derek’s live performances, he lives up to his stage name by incorporating mesmerizing light shows that change the arena space into a dream-like wonderland. Below is a video that I took of Derek’s live set from Basslights 2015.

Other DJ’s like Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken (better known as Big Gigantic) combine jazz and electronic beats to produce funky, groovy, get-down music. Big Gigantic’s songs are most easily recognized by the overpowering tunes of the saxophone. Try listening to their 2014 hit, “Blue Dream”, while resisting the urge to bob your head, or sway your feet, or break out into a full jam sesh. (Or do, no one’s looking).
youtube
If you’re interested in more of a broken techno vibe, Opiuo (Oscar Davey-Wraight) is your DJ. His electronic, club-like beats landed him into the “glitch hop” category of EDM; although, Wraight rather describes his own music as being “funkadelic bass music”. For a better taste of this definition, give his 2011 song “Loist Monial” a listen:
youtube
On the heaviest end of the EDM spectrum lies Lorin Ashton, or better known as Bassnectar. His unique mixes and mind-blowing bass leave for lots of body swaying and head banging.
youtube
Lorin has headlined major EDM festivals like Moonrise, Electric Forest, Okeechobee, and Ultra. His songs are perfect for a quick pick-me-up (like getting ready for a night out, or blasting it through your car radio at the start of your weekend). For bass-heavy songs, try listening to “Speakerbox” or “Teleport Massive”. For more relaxed songs, give “Butterfly” or “You and Me” a listen.

Dance music’s sax man, Dominic Lalli, and his drumming partner, Jeremy Salken, have released their three-track Where I Wanna Be EP under their Big Gigantic stage name. The EP is named after the crowd favorite single, a piano-laden, soul-filled, oscillating synth groover with a blissfully serenading sax solo. Big Gigantic unveil slick new single ‘Where I Wanna Be’
Boulder, Colorado duo Big Gigantic return with new single ‘Where I Wanna Be’, out October 2nd via Counter Records. An irresistibly slick slice of 140 bpm, ‘Where I Wanna Be’ is a polished track that’s underpinned by the dreamiest of sax solos. It draws on the same feelgood vibe of their last release, the summer-tinged ‘Friends’ featuring Californian singer-songwriter Ashe. Marking as one of their first releases in over three years, the single gained 12 New Music Friday Spotify placements including the US, Germany, Italy and Norway. “Playing all these live shows is our favorite place to be in the whole entire world and we owe the experience to our fans supporting us so we wrote a song about it,” Big Gigantic explains. “A simple way to say thank you to our fans and that were grateful for them.” Composed of saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken, Big Gigantic interpret traditional electronic music with live instruments, successfully creating an innovative, distinct sound that’s all their own. Their 15-year history spans playing in different bands, living together and touring the country in a beat up Subaru, with the pair going from roommates to friends to something that more closely resembles family over the years. https://open.spotify.com/album/0i6gWR8jsFiR8J61QWDFPz?si=W4PKhfJTTkaP3Kh0_AkxCA The band have gone strength to strength following their fifth most recent studio album, Brighter Future, released in 2016 that featured special guests Logic, Waka Flocka Flame, Griz, Cherub and many more. The singles ‘The Little Things’ feat. Angela McCluskey and ‘All Of Me’ feat. renowned rapper Logic have received national acclaim, with over 3 million downloads and 75+ million streams. Big Gigantic also unveiled an immersive 3D live experience earlier this year, with a series of unique technologies and creative techniques paired together to create a 3D show unlike any other, using stereoscopic 3D cameras and larger than life giant images projected across an LED screen. Their transcendent live shows are a showcase of brilliant improvisation and a tightly-knit bond between Salken and Lalli, who alternates between keys, sax and laptop, building a futuristic wall of sound that keeps crowds on their feet. A seriously high-quality production, Big Gigantic once againdemonstrate their unique sound in ‘Where I Wanna Be’.

Big Gigantic’ Rowdytown Is a Stunning Success at Brooklyn Mirage
Big Gigantic – Brooklyn Mirage – August 23, 2019 (Tom Zhang)
Big Gigantic were built for nights like these. No, OK, not just nights, as if this were any old concert, but experiences, in the grand sense of the word. How else to describe an event that’s as much a multisensory trip as a show, and that involves 3-D projections and immersive media as much as it does actual music? Big Gigantic have been staging these Rowdytown events for a while now, but this is the first time they’d brought the full experience to New York City, for a packed and diverse evening at a venue—Brooklyn Mirage—well-suited to its uniqueness. The weather showed up in its finest party pants as well: Late August heat and muggy rain had broken earlier in the day and long enough for a tenderly cool night in the open air.
What happens at this? Tunes, yes, including recent Big Gigantic gems like “You’re the One” and the laid-back “Friends,” along with plenty of new and unreleased music. Lights, all over. Visuals, dazzling. And 3-D glasses, definitely additive as opposed to just gimmicky. Plus, dancing, oh, yeah—this was hours of grooving, ass shaking and gyrating that hit the middle of the Venn diagram among hip-hop show, jam-band concert and rave. And while Big Gigantic were the main event, they brought along a polyglot musical circus that included Hippie Sabotage (playing late into the night after Big Gigantic had wrapped), Shallou, Louis Futon and Ilo Ilo.
But the big takeaway was an event you couldn’t really capture even in a hi-def video livestream, let alone an audio broadcast. The 3-D visuals, layered with the lights, layered with the music, layered with the group’s good-time goosing of the crowd, was something you had to be present for to truly get—no facsimile or halfway-in possible, and laced with Dominic Lalli’s screaming saxophone and Jeremy Salken’s crackling drums. That’s what the Big Gigantic duo built. That’s Rowdytown. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

NGHTMRE & Big Gigantic - Like That
With the hint of an old-time Tijuana Brass reference, this dance-ready energy blast does not disappoint. After the beat gets broken up with a big trap-style break, we get back to the soul feels and another heavy build.
NGHTMRE seems to like these one-off collaborations, and they are a great way of keeping the dynamics fresh. Not long ago, we were describing the ascent of dubstep as a genre, which seems quaint now. This time, Big Gigantic got tapped for the partnership, which brought in the talents of saxophonist Dominic Lalli and drummer Jeremy Salken. The focus here, although clearly genre-adjacent to the frantic stylings of Grave, finds more inspiration in the direction of hip-hop and electro-soul.
It’s the juxtaposition of a modern club-sound with the NGHTMARE hallmark: the drop takes center stage. Like That is the animate extension of a dark dubstep vibe into the blissed realm of a cocktail party. Also, horns.
Big Gigantic is a duo based in Boulder, CO whose blend of mind-bending beats, thunderous bass and frenetic melodies has developed a rapid following since forming in 2008.
NGHTMRE is a producer based in Los Angeles who has had a recent series of successful dubstep releases.
This song is featured on our Groovy Summer playlist.

Now that 2014 is only two weeks away I'm starting to get hella bummed that Big Gigantic won't be playing in Chicago this year. I mean Gramatik is great, but what a girl really wants is to open the new year with some BigG vibes.

Big Gigantic at Electric Forest
I’ve seen and photographed Big G a few times and was very exited to see the LED boxes again on the old Rothbury stomping grounds. They’re lights were so bright and back lit that night that a lot of images looked like this. The only difference being that this one is just badass – a solar explosion of sorts.
