Umphrey’s McGee’s Kris Myers to Miss the Rest of 2023 for Rotator Cuff Surgery
- Jason Bonham, Duane Trucks, Ben Atkind and Jeremy Salken to rotate in UM’s drum chair
Drummer Kris Myers will miss the rest of Umphrey’s McGee’s 2023 tour dates to undergo and recover from rotator cuff surgery.
Four October concerts have been moved to April 2024. But Umphrey’s’ remaining gigs will go on with a revolving door of drummers - including Jason Bonham, Widespread Panic’s Duane Trucks, Goose’s Ben Atkind and Big Gigantic’s Jeremy Salken - filling in.
Guitarist Jake Cinninger and percussionist Andy Farag will also “spend a little time behind the kit to help round things out,” the band said.
“I love and appreciate you all and please take comfort in knowing that everything will be OK and I’ll be playing again soon with my favorite band,” Myers said in a statement.

Spring Tour 2023: Goose Live @ Georgia Theatre
For the third time in four years, I have been fortunate enough to cover Goose for Concerthopper.com. This time around Goose came through my area on their Spring Tour 2023 and performed an intimate set at the historic Georgia Theatre located in the middle of downtown Athens, Georgia. Tickets for this event were just as hard to get as Master's tickets are at Augusta National. IYKYK (Thanks a lot, AXS.). For those who are not familiar with Goose, they are an American indie groove/funk/psychedelic rock/jam band that hails from Wilton, Connecticut, and started as a trio in 2014. The band originally consisted of Rick Mitarotonda (guitar/vocals), Trevor Weeks (bass), and Ben Atkind (drums). Peter Anspach (keyboards/guitar/vocals) was added in 2017 and then later Goose added Jeff Arevalo (percussion/vocals) in 2020. Goose has released three (3) LPs, two (2) EPs, and nine (9) live albums that are all amazing! If you were lucky enough to get their latest live album (2022.12.31 Cincinnati, Ohio) on preorder from Diggers Factory, 'Congratulations!' I know we are all eagerly awaiting this pressing to ship out later in the year!
Before doors opened the line, filled with eager and excited Goose fans, to enter the Georgia Theatre was wrapped around the building way down the side street. Whether doing photography or just attending a Goose show as a fan, you will always find me here smiling with my people! Honk Honk!
Let’s get back to this once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness Goose perform live at the Georgia Theatre. The eager and excited crowd gathered was a mixture of University of Georgia college students, fans of Goose, and those hard-core fans that travel with the band as much as possible during their tour dates. It is always nice to notice those familiar faces in the crowd that attend every Goose show that you also attend. If you follow Goose while on tour, I am sure that you can spot some recognizable faces riding the rail during other tour dates across the United States thanks to other concert photographers.
Once Goose came on stage, the gracious crowd erupted with a loud and all-so-familiar “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!”. This tradition has become one of my favorite things to do as a show of affection and love toward the entire band. Not knowing what was coming song-wise, the audience puts their trust in Goose to take them on a journey through their musical soundscape. Some of the things that I love about Goose aren’t always music, for instance; Trevor’s bass face while performing is something serious as he lays down some crunchy and funky bass lines. Or Pete’s ever-present smile as he either talks to the crowd showing love and support or while he is just jamming on the keys/guitar, you can tell that Pete is all about making the crowd smile along with him. Another thing that I love to see, is Rick’s face as he gets deeper and deeper in the sauce while he’s playing guitar. The more I see Goose play, the more I believe Rick is defining his craft even more with each note he performs. A master of his craft! Well, let’s not forget the percussion pieces of Goose because the excitement from both Ben and Jeff also shines bright as they lay down some funky beats. Goose makes sure that each song performed is an experience to remember as the crowd dances away their worries during the performance.
Check out the setlist from this sold-out show at the Georgia Theatre below:
Set 1: “Tumble, Time to Flee” [1] -> “Green River” [2], “Flodown”, “Thatch”, “Silver Rising”, “The Empress of Organos” -> Trevor Reads Poetry [3] -> “The Empress of Organos” Set 2: “Arcadia”, “Slow Ready” > “Rock The Casbah” [4], “Hot Tea” -> “Turned Clouds” > “Hot Tea” [5] Encore: “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” [6] Teases: "After Midnight" tease in Hot Tea Coach's Notes: [1] Unfinished. [2] Creedence Clearwater Revival. [3] “Fuck The Pain Away” by Peaches. [4] The Clash. [5] With “After Midnight” tease from Peter. [6] Rupert Holmes.

"Funk, Rock, and Soul: DJ Williams Delivers with 'By Way of RVA'" Welcome music freaks, brace up for some rocking summer as DJ Williams, electric guitar wizard and producer par excellence, sets off for a 26-city tour across the U. S. This is more than just an ordinary concert – it’s a celebration of his latest album titled “By Way of RVA” that is a testament to the city of Richmond, Virginia where he cultivated his unique creativity. If you have got the opportunity to watch DJ Williams perform, then you well aware of the fact that this guy is a monster on stage. Premier Guitar even described him as ‘…a monster… an inspiring and efficient and melodic soloist, with a warm sound and extraordinary technical proficiency. ’ Now, he begin and ends his tour on May 3 in New Orleans during Jazz Fest After Dark and on July 13 in Golden, Colorado. But he’s not doing this alone – DJ is supported by incredibly talented musicians, including Ben Atkind on drums, Steph Orsini on bass, and Macon Mann on keys. Together, they’re going to be ripping through tracks from his latest EP, “By Way of RVA,” released on Projekt Records and highlighting just how versatile of a musician DJ is. We’re talking funk, rock, soul – all in one, and all part of this excellent piece of audio. [caption id="attachment_55817" align="alignnone" width="1038"] This is followed by the opening track on the EP ‘Fade Away’[/caption] This is followed by the opening track on the EP ‘Fade Away’, a catchy tune that can only be attributed to DJ Williams but has hints of Lenny Kravitz to it. It has its energy from the power chords, live drum and a guitar solo that will bring anyone to their knees. Next up is “Burning Ash” which features very powerful riffs and great falsetto, and then we’re on the dreamy “By Way of RVA” which features Hip Hop beat and awesome Guitars that take one to another world. Though, the piece that I found most impressive as generally unorthodox is “Mr. Nobody,” with it’s strange guitar line and extended vocal summit that solves this great tale. There’s also DJ’s take on Nirvana’s heart shaped box, so this is one of those they take it into lo-fi, trip-hop, trap style, this and that, that proves how much of a beast he is. “Turn Of Events” is the final cut with a reggae inflection perfectly serving as a laid-back finale after the musical chaos. What is even more intriguing is the fact that the album can be regarded as highly personal for DJ. He did the whole thing in his bedroom and even produced some peculiar ideas such as placing drums in the wardrobe and vocals in the shower as it created a natural reverb. Listen to how he stacked like 22 vocals on “Heart-Shaped Box” or just how he went over the top with these orchestral synth arrangements on the title track. That is the life story of DJ, who was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and who listens to the music ranging from Curtis Mayfield and Nirvana, from Miles Davis and Led Zeppelin. He is currently the lead guitarist for Karl Denson Tiny Universe Band, also performs a solo project DJ Williams Projekt as well as has performed with John Legend, Dave Matthews Band, and George Clinton to name but a few. And if you are up for the fact filled summer of live music, don’t snooze on DJ Williams ’ tour. And, with his fiery performances and this thrilling new EP, he’s absolutely making an impact on the musical landscape. Don’t wait for the show, take Your tickets, turn up the music on RVA, and let the concert begin! Now, after three months of their respective bunkers, the 4 musicians are venturing again out. Just about, after all.
For the following 10 days, Goose shall be holed up at a barn in Fairfield County, the place, beginning final night time, they will be broadcasting their distinctive mix of improv-inspired rock ‘n’ roll by means of eight units of reside music.
Some acts, like Marc Rebillet, Garth Brooks and Spafford, have tried drive-in film theaters. Others, like Dropkick Murphy’s and the Disco Biscuits, booked empty stadiums.
However for street warriors like Goose, who spend the majority of their time enjoying small or medium-sized venues in cities throughout the US, rising their fanbase with each present, the following smartest thing they will do is play on-line and hope the followers present up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“The demand for reside, new content material hasn’t actually gone anyplace, by way of what individuals need to see,” stated Peter Anspach, who performs keys and guitar. “Perhaps they don’t seem to be going out to a present, however we nonetheless discovered the demand for individuals watching new never-before-seen units from the lounge is simply as large as a present.”
Twiddle, a Vermont rock band with 15 years of relentless touring behind them, is gearing up for the same run. Theirs is “Roots Tour 2020,” they usually’re promising 9 units of reside music carried out at numerous areas round their residence state at venues instrumental to their profession — all streamed reside for followers to look at at residence.
“That is going to be one thing actually particular for us and really excited to relive a few of these particular moments from our profession,” Mihali Savoulidis, Twiddle’s guitarist and lead singer, stated in saying the occasion, which begins at $75 for the package deal deal.
Each bands’ digital excursions are being produced by Dwell From Out There, an internet music & content material collection below the 11E1even Group that started producing live performance streams within the early days of the pandemic.
“Lots of people are going up on Fb Dwell simply sitting on the sofa with their acoustic guitar. We wished to offer our followers one thing that was far more participating that changed what a ‘tour’ is for us and our followers,” Dwell From Out There co-founder Dave DiCianni instructed Appradab. “Goose, and each band that we work with, type of got here up with their very own idea.”
Recreating a neighborhood on-line
Part of the problem these bands face is making an attempt to recreate the neighborhood expertise that usually revolves round their exhibits on the street.
“Everybody’s residence quarantining. All we wish is to be related,” stated Ben Atkind, the band’s drummer, of the reside Fb Q&A’s they’ve tried in current weeks. “Our fan base may be very lively, and on the market, so we’re positively making an effort to communicate — for his or her sake and ours.”
For Goose’s digital tour, there shall be a number of extra possibilities to attach.
Followers who purchased tickets to stream the exhibits can play alongside as balls are pulled on the stream, every one dictating what music the band will play subsequent, giving followers an opportunity to win prizes if these songs match their supplied boards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There will even be merch, VIP meet-and-greets with the band (over Zoom after all), and even a neighborhood expertise present.
“That is only a complete different ingredient of randomness,” stated Anspach. “It form of makes it extra entertaining for us, in addition to the followers.”
Rick Mitarotonda, who sings and performs guitar, agreed.
“It is going to be enjoyable. It is going to be a unique expertise. It is going to hold us on edge,” he stated.
Goose usually drafts out a set proper earlier than they take the stage, or lets the music take them the place they need to go. However now? “We gotta go along with the balls,” he stated.
The query stays of what a interval of retreat from the stage will imply for a band like Goose, whose momentum appeared to be unstoppable within the jam music world earlier this 12 months.
Some may by no means make it by means of the opposite aspect. Different bands may change for good.
Mitarotonda is not too anxious.
“Having house from issues is very nice. There’s all the time a renewed vitality if you come again, particularly if it is taken on function or not,” he stated, including that by having slightly breath “improvisation goes to new locations.”
Anspach agreed. “I really feel like after we get again we’ll have far more concepts and be way more impressed, and we’ll respect the truth that we’re enjoying collectively a lot extra,” he stated. “I am positively stoked for it.”
“I hope we alter,” added Mitarotonda. “As a result of if it simply stays the identical for too lengthy then it is — it isn’t good. The very best bands, the best bands, change loads. I hope there’s some components of change.”

Gearing Up for Goose's Capitol Theatre Run & Summer Tour 2024!
Goose, a jam/psychedelic rock band from Wilton, CT., is getting ready for an eventful year in 2024 that all starts with a highly anticipated four-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. A little over a month after this four-night run, Goose’s Summer Tour 2024 kicks off by headlining the inaugural Solshine Music & Arts Revue at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, IL. (May 24-25). FYI – Orebolo (featuring Rick, Pete, and Jeffrey of Goose) is also on this stacked lineup. ICYMI: Orebolo and the legendary Sturgill Simpson made some very happy music fans at this year’s Dead Ahead Music Festival in Rivera Cancun, Mexico when they performed “Breakers Roar”, a song from Sturgill’s Grammy Award-winning 2016 album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. Seeing this kind of creative collaboration with some of my favorite artists solidifies the reasons why I love music so much. For those who know me personally, anytime that I get to bring up Sturgill Simpson in any shape or form, I am taking that shot 10 out of 10 times. But I digress.
So far, the Summer Tour 2024 will conclude on June 30th at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, CT. Along the way, Goose will complete some epic multiple-night runs: a two-night run at The Factory in St. Louis, MO., a two-night run at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village, CO., a three-night run at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA., and a two-night run at Thompson’s Point in Portland, ME. Tickets for the Summer Tour 2024 are still on sale with some good seats available at various locations. In addition, one dollar for each ticket sold for the Summer Tour 2024 will be donated to Greenpeace. Sadly, The Capitol Theatre run has long been sold out, but you can still find some tickets for sale through verified resale markets like cashortrade.org.
Goose consists of Rick Mitarotonda (guitar/vocals), Trevor Weeks (bass), Peter Anspach (keyboards/guitar/vocals), Jeff Arevalo (percussion/vocals), and newly added Cotter Ellis (drums). Last year was an extensive year of touring for Goose, although Goose and founding member Ben Atkind (drummer) mutually parted ways after their annual Goosemas celebration in Hampton, VA. After a few months of speculation between the fans as to who would be chosen to sit behind the drum kit, Goose announced the addition of ex-Swimmer drummer Cotter Ellis. And to the fan’s surprise, Goose also released Ted Tapes II on multiple streaming platforms. This jam session would be the first with Cotter on the drums and let me tell you this jam session is something special right here. So, knowing that information, this tour is a DO NOT MISS! Which tour date will you see Goose during the Summer Tour 2024?

Cotter Ellis is Newest Member of Goose’s Flock
- Drummer replaces Ben Atkind
Cotter Ellis is Goose’s new drummer.
The “stoked” band named Ellis to replace co-founding sticks man Ben Atkind, who left in 2023 over “fundamental personal and creative differences.”
Goose first saw the Vermont drummer play about five years back “and were immediately struck by his deep sense of pocket and feel,” the band said. Auditions confirmed their initial feelings.
“There were some consistent threads we all felt in the room throughout these early sessions; ease of communication, freely flowing ideas and a feeling of effortlessness moving through different zones,” the band said in a statement.
“We experienced a patience that allowed all our personalities to come out and energy to well up in new ways. … We couldn’t be more stoked for what’s to come.”

Drummer Ben Atkind Leaves Goose
- “It’s just not the right fit anymore,” band says
Goose and its co-founding drummer Ben Atkind are severing their musical partnership because of what the band called “fundamental personal and creative differences.”
The split was announced by the band’s remaining members and Atkind in separate statements.
Calling the situation “unsustainable,” Goose says the split with their now-former “world-class drummer” is amicable.
“These types of situations are often far more complicated than what meets the eye, and … this decision is a difficult one for all of us,” the band said. “It is not the result of fighting, drama or malicious intent on any end, but merely recognizing that, over time, it’s just not the right fit anymore.”
Atkind echoed the band in a statement of his own.
“Long-term creative camaraderie demands personal evolution, …consistent communication, mutual empathy and a willingness to compromise,” he said. “Even though this is something we tried, these elements fell out of sync, which is where we find ourselves today.”
Goose is off the road until a May 24, 2024, gig in Illinois. The band hasn’t named a replacement but said: “We will be heading into the New Year with a renewed sense of creative fire.”

Goose Are Worth the Hype at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday
Goose – Music Hall of Williamsburg – January 25, 2020
It’s a frequent lead for these types of write-ups but here it is again: The jam-band scene is a remarkably self-renewing thing, with word-of-mouth breeding interest in upstart acts from all pockets of the country, elevating them to national exposure, cementing their place in an emerging vanguard behind the generations of artists who came before them (and who were themselves once the emerging vanguard), and then, later still, looking over their shoulder to welcome a new crop—always, a new crop—of wide-eyed and excitable young improv savants who’ll stake their claim to vanguard status soon enough.
Claim-staker of the moment is Goose, the Connecticut quartet already sniffing rarefied jam-scene air in terms of how quickly they’ve gone from buzzed-about curiosity to being able to sell out a venue the size of Music Hall of Williamsburg—in advance. The expanding national tour dates are booked, the crucially tastemaking opening slots are popping up (hello, Red Rocks with Umphrey’s McGee in June), and, most important, the buzz is legit: These guys can strap together a hell of a meaty two-setter, which they most certainly did in a three-and-a-half-hour show at the very, very packed Music Hall on Saturday Night. There’s a lot of what you’d expect—polyglot style ranging from straight-ahead rock and R&B to loping reggae and groovy psychedelia—and then a bit of what you don’t for a band in this developmental stage, namely, patience.
The guitar-hero peaks come but they’re earned, and the marination leading up to them isn’t just aimless vamping or ambient sprawl meant to signify a “jam” before all parts land in the same spot and its guitar-and-keyboard hose ahead of an outro or segue. Several times throughout Saturday’s show they went for a just-enough exploration that felt richly satisfying for how it was crafted as much as its dance-it-out fun factor and impressive musicianship. I really enjoyed “Hot Tea,” “All I Need,” “So Ready” and the tautly bouncing “Doc Brown” among the sturdy originals that tried a few things. They tucked in a little Radiohead (“Weird Fishes/Arpeggi”) and Moody Blues (“Nights in White Satin”), too, although they didn’t need ’em. There’s a lot of depth in Goose that they weren’t necessarily in a rush to show us all at once. Word of that kind of mojo in this scene gets around, and, well, here we are. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

Goose: Sold Out at The Eastern (Night 1)
Goose is an American-indie groove/jam band that hails from Norwalk, Connecticut and has been touring all over since their inception in 2016. The band now consists of Rick Mitarotonda (guitar/vocals), Trevor Weeks (bass), Ben Atkind (drums), Jeff Arevalo (percussion/vocals), and Peter Anspach (keyboards/guitar/vocals). They have released two (2) LPs: Moon Cabin (2016) & Shenanigans Nite Club (2021) and one (1) EP: Night Lights (2020). Just a heads up, they are selling Shenanigans Nite Club LPs at their merch booth nightly while on the Fall Tour. So, do yourself a solid and grab a copy of the record before they sell out!
When Goose announced a Fall Tour for 2021 and had two (2) Atlanta dates added at The Eastern, I knew that Concerthopper needed to be there to document this performance. Not only would this be my first-time catching Goose live, but according to Peter Anspach, this would be their first time in Atlanta performing. So, the two (2) dates made more sense, especially after they sold out within minutes after first going on sale to the public some months ago.
I did not know what to expect from the band’s live performance, but after talking to some die-hard Goose fans outside the venue I knew that this was about to be a memorable night. Granted, this was also the first time I attended a sold-out show at The Eastern, I was pleasantly, surprised to see everyone still enjoying themselves despite having very, little room to dance on the floor. Even though the Eastern was at maximum capacity, this venue is prepared for such occasions and it did not feel as if we were all packed like sardines in a tin can.
