the man, whose previously neatly styled hair has now become a more familiar (while still greasy) messy head of blond locks, turns around, and that’s when stephen realizes why he just couldn’t fight him.

“john?” he calls out, and despite the ringing in his ears from all the earlier action, the world seems too quiet in the short moments that follow.

“who the hell is john?” the man says back, and in hearing that voice again, the one he hasn’t heard in so long, stephen almost feels his legs give out. in his state of utter shock, he does manage to, at least, fall to his knees.

Gives nose/forehead kisses

Oh my god it’s Stephen, 100% it is Stephen. Stupid, cutesy forehead and nose kisses. John always groans and rolls his eyes and pushes him off, but there’s definitely a little smile there.

Gets jealous the most

John. Dear lord in heaven, it’s one of his biggest flaws, but you know, when he gets over being ANNOYED by it, Stephen kind of loves it.

Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive

John. And he lectures Stephen the whole time, and Stephen just leans into him and slurs “I love you” and John softens up. Really. Under the frown, totally softened.

Takes care of on sick days

They both do. Stephen has learned all the tricks from his mother, and John has become so parental that it’s almost second nature. Out of the two of them, though, Stephen is definitely better at it.

Drags the other person out into the water on beach day

John, actually. Once he gets to the point where he’s realized that being outside and in the open is happening, he gets really into it, and tugs Stephen into the -frankly - freezing water.

Gives unprompted massages

John. Stephen gets caught off guard by it, but he relaxes and gets really into it. Humming and moaning and everything, and John sits there, straddling his thighs and smirking.

Drives/rides shotgun

John insists that he gets to drive. Stephen tries to fight it, now and then, but he always eventually gives in because sexual favours are extracted.

Brings the other lunch at work

They trade off surprising each other with random different fast foods.

Has the better parental relationship

Definitely Stephen. He and Marla have such a close relationship, and it’s a good thing. Marla definitely takes John under her wing, too, once he properly lets her in.

Tries to start role-playing in bed

Stephen. Just offhandedly comments about something and then side-eyes John, trying to see if he’s into it or not.

Embarrassingly drunk dancer

Stephen Jameson holy shit. Just an embarrassing drunk dancer, and John stands there and watches, and tries to wave off being dragged into it but he totally goes. He does.

Still cries watching Titanic

They both try to hold back. There’s definitely some wet eyes going on though.

Firmly believes in couples costumes

Neither of them. They claim. They don’t “believe” in costumes, but Russell definitely calls them on their matching outfits a half dozen times.

Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas

Stephen, but just by a little bit. Yeah, John technically stole his gift, but Stephen actually broke the rule.

Makes the other eat breakfast

Stephen. Catches himself saying some of that “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” shit, and then stares into the middle distance for a good minute while John laughs.

Remembers anniversaries

John. He’s good like that. And he tries not to be disappointed when it’s obvious that Stephen only remembered at the very last minute.

Brings up having kids

They already have “kids”, they don’t need to discuss it.

First time Stephen entered a hospital to talk with his mother after finding about who he was, the weight of emotions and thoughts and sufferings of those who were sick in that particular side of the hospital was so unbearable that Cara felt his unease. He was later found by Cara/John outside, crying against the wall of a death-end alley as old emotions came through him. He needed a hug.
