Genuine question for those who have watched all of Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld
What are your thoughts on Gugu? (Spoilers below!)
Specifically, what are your thoughts on all the lies she told? Do you think it's given enough focus in the show? Because to me, she is an extraordinarily complicated character, and while not a villain, I can't get over how much she lied. To the point that I'm kind of surprised Jentry isn't still angry with her by the end of the series and even defends her to her mother.
Yes, there are absolutely moments when Jentry gets angry with Gugu. Quite frequently, in fact, at least in the first half of the series. But later on in the series, when Moonie mentions that Gugu isn't trustworthy, I kind of have to agree with her. She actively lied to Jentry through almost every episode, barring maybe the last 2-3. And most of her lies 1. aren't small white lies, and 2. aren't really done to protect Jentry. The two biggest ones to me are that she lied to Jentry that she (Jentry) has had her powers since birth when in actuality Gugu purposefully gave Jentry the powers in order to protect them from a demon (and kind of blackmail her parents), and that she lied to Jentry that both of her parents were dead despite knowing that Jentry's mother was alive.
It's clear she loves Jentry and they have a close bond, but damn if Gugu doesn't continuously lie about multiple life-changing events.
So, I'm just genuinely curious what everyone else thinks on the matter. I just binged the show and really enjoyed it, and now I'm getting wrapped up in analysis and fanart.

So we can all agree that Jentry going back to Zhong was out of left field, right?
She was generally calm and mature when her "parents" were explaining things to her and when she talked to Gugu after closing the portal. Then Gugu leaves and all of a sudden she wants to break them out of ghost jail? No build up, no plan, no connection to her current goals. All we got was a throwaway line about wishing they could be with her, and that's it. The sequence of events before this made me super excited about the direction Jentry's character was going in and then it was all flipped on a dime. And then tying that ham-fisted scene to ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT REVEALS OF THE SERIES took away the impact of that scene. Because the scene of the reveal WAS impactful on its own, but I was still reeling from Jentry's sudden change of motivation. We were ROBBED of a well-placed reveal and that's going to have a negative impact on the ENTIRE rest of the series

Jentry Chau vs the Underworld Thoughts (Spoilers)
Tumblr media
Jentry Chau is a fun but flawed series. The premise is engaging, and Jentry is a strong lead whose complex relationship with Gugu (her great aunt) is one of the best things about the series. However, some of the characters and plot beats were underdeveloped. While it's common for a show to go through many rewrites before the finalized version is finished, I could feel the revisionism in season one between how Stella is barely a relevant character and Michael gaining the power to see into the future isn't explained at all. I especially get the feeling that Kit went through some changes because, in the intro, we see him with wings yet in the show that isn't the case at all.
Tumblr media
The fact that this show doesn't explore the things I critique more in-depth is especially strange since this series was able to get 13 episodes in its first season! Given how animated shows have received fewer and fewer episodes, the fact that it managed to get that many episodes is crazy. Another major critique I have with the show is that Jentry revealing that she was the one who burned down the town in the second episode was a mistake. Besides the fact that the bombshell should have been dropped at a more pivotal moment, it feels like it barely has any repercussions on Jentry's life. Like we see students give her the cold shoulder and judge her, but it feels like it's not being pushed as much as it could be. This ties into the overall pacing problem that plauge the show.
Despite all my gripes, I still recommend giving this show a watch! While it's a subversion of the 2000s animated Teenage Superhero series in some ways, it still feels like a throwback to them. Throughout watching this show I kept thinking "Man, a Danny Phantom reboot could take some notes from this show." The show can be funny due to the character's banter (Ed is great comic relief), I love how it utilizes a lot of things from Asian Mythology/religion and the animation can be absolute fire. I do hope this show gets a second season as there's still a lot of story left to tell.

K I think this is the last one but at one time while carpooling we ran into the VA for Gugu after a company promo event and she indulged us with this stellar image lol (she’s super sweet this was her just having fun lol)
So I HAD to replace her in this photo with GUGU later (added Ed and Jentry in the back for shits and giggles)

In his defense, that's absolutely what Gugu would be saying if she could still be heard by non-psychics.
