Comics Review: 'Jenny Zero' TPB #2: Homeland Insecurities
Jenny Zero TPB #2: Homeland Insecurities by Brockton McKinney, Magenta King, Arnaldo Robles, Geraldo Filho, Dave Dwonch

action
adventure
coming of age
giant monster
kaiju

superhero
My Rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Action Science Police is still stocked with a bunch of assholes. Monsters, the jigokai still roam the planet. And Jenny Tetsuo is still a giant mess. JENNY ZERO v2 picks up the action, the mayhem, and the hysterics without missing a beat.
Except, of course, this volume pivots around back stories full of tears and regret. On the face of things, Jenny agrees to tag team with the fools of the ASP with the goal of stopping some massive "overking" monster from awakening. But as luck would have it, or not, the ASP's Director Santo has her own plans for General Fujimoto and the infamous "Jenny Zero." The ASP is the world's foremost organization designed to assess and eliminate high-level threats; it has the tech, the personnel, and the brains. And that's kind of a problem. Will Jenny and her pals figure identify this "problem" before it's too late? The hive mind waits for no one.
JENNY ZERO v2 is less visually and narratively chaotic than the first volume, but still contains solid amounts of delightfully inappropriate humor and gratuitous violence. Sounds like a win. Jenny's time in the mountains with Aiko has mellowed her out a bit (alcohol, yes, but no more drugs), and the young woman's date with destiny has her reckoning with her and her father's pasts more concretely than before. Jenny's assorted collisions with mind-control death cults, indestructible dark gods, and an awkward reunion with Alpha are par for the course.
The art is up to the challenge, too. Here, the coloring is less gratuitous and more amiable, relative to the previous volume. Instead of the creative team's infatuation with brightness and ferocious complementary colors, readers encounter a more consistent and theme-appropriate mixture of blues and purples that give the comic a saturated, mellow, dreamy look and feel. The end result works, and the comic is both fun and easy to read because of it.
Jenny is still a pain in the ass, but she's got Fujimoto and Dana Sheratin, her best pal, nearby to keep her (somewhat) in check. The story's deeper investment in the history of Jenny's father, as well a into Director Santo, lend the comic much-needed dimensionality beyond the tale of a sorrowful adult who refuses to grow up. For want of criticism, JENNY ZERO v2 definitely rushes the ending (e.g., super bad villain misses his time to shine), and the final chapter could well skirt a rather calamitous comic book trope (e.g., good characters with very bad luck), but here's to hoping Jenny remains as strong and complicated as ever.

Jenny Zero #1
Tumblr media
Jenny Zero #1 Dark Horse Comics 2021 Written by Dave Dwonch & Brockton McKinney Illustrated by Magenta King Coloured by Megan Huang Lettered by Dave Dwonch    Sex, Drugs, and Giant Monsters! Meet Jenny Tetsuo, the hard drinkin', hard partyin' daughter of beloved superhero, Mega Commander Zero. After washing out as the military's top Kaiju-killer, ''Jenny Zero'' now lives the celebutante life with her hotel heiress and publicist best friend, Dana Sheraton. But when the massive creatures return, Jenny must decide if she can sober up and save the world!    I found myself really enjoying this.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this but at its heart it is a Kaiju story told from a very unique point of view.  I found myself thinking that this was so on trend right now and then to see how it kept getting more and more original and unique to these creators.  By the time we got to the end of the book with that huge cliffhanger ending I wanted more, I needed more.  Oh just the way we see things happen and how we get to know some folks really struck every single chord within me that I couldn’t get enough of.      I love the way that we’re seeing this being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence ov events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  One of the things that I thought was done exceptionally well was how we the story moves forward while bringing us the past events that brought us to the point where they are currently at.  This ties into the character development and it’s amazingly good to see as the dialogue and the interactions alongside the way they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter.  We really get a great sense of who they are through all this.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story, introducing the characters and shows this world it creates this whirlwind of awesome.    I’m digging the way that this is structured and how the layers within the story are both subtle and complex, sometimes at the same time.  There is so much happening in such a short amount of time and yet all fits together like puzzle pieces do.  How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it movies the story forward is achieved beautifully.    The interiors here are fantastic!  It has this crazy Japanese style art inspirational feel to it and yet it also feels like totally original work that would fit right into the old underground comix realm.  That the linework is so good and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create the detail work we’re seeing is astounding.  Backgrounds are utilised here but we could always see more.  Regardless, how the composition within the panels bring us this depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story is rendered perfectly.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a marvellous eye for storytelling.  The colour work leaves me gobsmacked.  The choice of colours, how the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is brilliant to see.  Again the colours are so out there and they work on so many levels and it showcases and eye for colour that isn’t afraid to utilise it in some bold and daring manners.     This is definitely an adult title thanks to the language, sexual situations and adult themes and I think that it’s unapologetically European, how they swear and use words that Americans tend to find distasteful, makes me smile with sheer delight.  This may be over the top at times but it works on so many levels and I gotta say this is so much more brilliant than I ever could have imagined.

Both Kei and Kaneda are part Inupiaq. Kei's parentage is a touching story about how her dad was a prodigy studying marinebiology in an Alaskan university before his fifteenth birthday when he was imprisoned after the declaration of World War III on suspicion of being a spy and her mom was a teenage activist who publicly protested and advocated for his release. It took over a decade, even after the war ended, until their persistence paid off and he was a free man. Over all that time they fell in love and eventually married and had Kei. Kaneda's story is that "my mom was a wild child and hooked up with an eskimo boy on a vacation her family won in a contest. She had me when she was sixteen. I think she was trying to prove a point to her dad."
Kaori translates as a hobby. In the movie continuity she's shared bits of her translation of Goethe's Faust with Tetsuo and other members of the Capsules and they loved the scene with the naked witches and smutty apple tree metaphors. In the comic continuity, she would sing songs about suffering and revenge in other languages so the others wouldn't understand, with "Jim Jones in Botany Bay" (which she actually sang to Akira as a lullaby once) and "Seeräuber Jenny" being her favorites.
Yamagata will draw Betty Boop on just about anything, even if it isn't his in the first place. This doesn't sound like a problem, but sometimes he draws her topless and not being able to scribble it out when there are authorities who will take offence to it around can get old really fast.
Tetsuo's been known to have a thing for "good girls" but the farthest he's gotten with one is his relationship with Kaori. A lot of the group thinks it's a "corrupt the innocent" thing and call him a pervert for it but the truth is the more goody two-shoes types just never seemed to know what to expect from him so he never felt like he wasn't good enough for them.
Kai grew up in an abusive home and while the necktie is mostly a snazzy accessory, he's definitely taken into account how it can be used to bandage up a wound or choke out someone much bigger than him.
Kaneda calls cigarettes "cancer sticks" and claims he hasn't smoked one since he was nine years old. Tetsuo smokes and sells cigarettes to little kids.
Kaori is Jewish and her Hebrew name is Esther.
Tetsuo's lackey in the comics was involved in selling drugs and sex trafficking before Neo-Tokyo got mind-nuked into the apocalypse, but then it was for corrupt politicians and business executives.
Kai bought Kaori a new shirt and took her back to her dorm after Tetsuo's attempt to skip town went wrong in the movie. He even walked his bike the entire way because he figured she wouldn't want to hear another motorcycle engine for a while.
More too, but that's what I got for now
Your Akira headcanons...I must see...
