Back on my placate/people please/fawn response Jean bullshit strap in

Jean’s learned response is to shut down his preferences, boundaries, and wants to reduce the amount of harm that he receives. In his words, he endures. This only serves him in actively abusive and traumatic situations, it’s a trauma response. Unlike freeze, fight, and flight it means the person is perceived and compliant and willing, that everything that occurs is okay else.

Jean out of a traumatic and abusive environment does so much worse because his brain is not longer in survival mode. Being so used to harm and being constantly vigilant has ruined his nervous system. Picking up patterns, behaviours, cues that aren’t present or do not mean harm anymore is a detriment to him now, they no longer serve him.

How Jeremy, Cat and Lalia approaches this is genuinely helpful. They don’t take Jeans fawn/placating as if they were being lied to or betrayed. It has nothing to do with them and they know that consciously. They point out when things aren’t okay to pull Jean into alignment, Jeremy going to far as to say ‘do not let us hurt you unknowingly’.

Something that I wish those that experience fawn/people please/placate more where told: people do not want to hurt you, they do not want to unknowingly do you harm, they do not like or enjoy seeing you suffer because you didn’t do something within your boundaries. If they do that’s not okay and that’s not how someone should ever be treated.

And for Jean this rings true so hard, he’s had so so few people in his life that do not want to hurt him. Renee helping him is a spark of hope and something that is so foreign to him, because harm and hurt is all he’s known for so long.

With fawn response for some their own boundaries have been ignored for so long they no longer know what they are. In regard to Exy I see this as true for Jean. He sees it as survival, because it is, but at the cost of his body and health.

Would love to see Jean realise the harm fawn does when it’s not in an abusive/traumatic situation<3

andrew hates jean because he was there at evermore with neil. he understands to some extent why jean did the things he did but he’s still fucking pissed

jean hates andrew because he saw neil at his lowest and knew it was because he cared for andrew. jean wants it to be him, jean and neil were supposed to be forever partners

When Neil goes pro he ends up in Jean's team and they're roommates. The first day Jean text Andrew "package received" with a picture of Neil in their apartment and Andrew answers "take care of him". Neil still misses Andrew, his last year of college was hell but now Jean's with him and he's feeling a bit better.

Jean, years in the future being asked by reporters for a comment on the news that Neil and Andrew are actually partners and have been supposedly for years: Neil was my partner first, I gave him to Minyard.

Reporters: sorry what? Care to expand on that?

Jean: not really.

This is some mythical shit for real.

Thinking about Jean having conversations with a random cat on campus. Like one of those times where he's sitting on a bench and waiting for the next person to accompany him to his class. And a cat comes up to him, maybe it's one that's claimed that particular bench as their napping spot. It stares Jean down but Jean will not be moved, until he finds how ridiculous this must look, so he scoots over and the cat reluctantly accepts him as a bench buddy.

At first, he simply ignores the cat. Standing up when he spots Jeremy or whoever's been assigned to him that day. A whispered, "À plus."

He thought it would be the last, but he ends up seeing the cat around. More often than not, they end up keeping each other company.

Jean starts talking to the cat. Maybe expressing his thoughts on a reading material, bouncing ideas to it about his classes or how unbearable his team/classmates are. (He rants to them about Jeremy sometimes, even Neil or Kevin.)

Then, he starts bringing it treats. A trade for bearing his company and lending its feline ears to his woes. The first time it bumps its head against his hand, Jean reminds himself to breathe. The first time it sits on his laps, it reminds him to breathe.

He's not trying to hide this. (He totally is.) But he keeps the cat a secret. Something about having something to himself. Even though he knows he can't keep it.

Eventually, he gets found out. He doesn't know whether it's good luck that Jeremy's the one who does or bad luck that Jeremy had to hear him having a conversation with the cat.

He's glad enough that Jeremy doesn't say a word about it. Just gives him that smile that feels like sunshine and tastes like the sea. He denies the warmth spreading across his face, the lightness in his heart, the urge to reach over and wipe that damnable smile off with his own lips.

the dynamic/parallels between jean and andrew in tgr absolutely kill me

the "tell me his name" scene just means so much to me and it just evokes every bit of andrew's protectiveness, the implicit trauma-induced reaction that he had in tfc, when he pins nicky against the wall and threatens to kill him if he touches neil

jean sees andrew as he is, even if he doesn't entirely understand him. he can see his thought process better than, say, nicky, who abides by andrew's rules without quite understanding or caring to know why, only that the consequences of not doing such are deadly

despite having barely said a word to him prior, jean is able to pinpoint the exact thing to say to convince andrew to quit smoking with a single sentence: promising him that one day, when someone comes for neil, he won't be able to save him

and then someone does come for neil—and comes for him—but all andrew can see past his pain is neil, lying unmoving on the court floor before he can reach him and he knows that jean is right

jean implicitly understands the lengths to which andrew would go to protect neil, would likely understand the necessity for tilda's death and his promise to aaron

for the first time in his life, jean has people he cares about and covets the power to protect them. he knows how fragile and gentle it is, how brutal it is when that choice to do so is taken away

he couldn't save elodie, hadn't wanted to save kevin, but for once, he had something like hope within his grasp and he didn't want to let go
