THE BOLT (1778) by JEAN-HONORÉ FRAGONARD

The painting we see here is of a young couple hugging, right next to a bed. The red curtains hang down elegantly, and the bed covers look disheveled and uneven. The light catches the right hand of the composition and immediately brings our attention to this couple.

The gentleman raises his right hand so that the light penetrates diagonally from his upper right hand to the lower left hand and the female’s outstretched foot. The lighting is intentionally matched to this angle. The reason the man extends his hand is because he’s closing the door.

The man is already undressed, but the lady is still clothed. This first observation allows us to conclude that at the time, it was much more challenging for women to undress themselves than it was for men. She was burdened by a corset and bothered by a petticoat.

The bed is unkempt. If we take a closer look, we see that the pillow behind the lady is breast-shaped. The pillow is almost covered by the red curtain, which suggests a vagina(labia). The enlightened parts on the bed suggest an erection.The bed occupies about half of the paintings, It symbolizes sex, love, and pleasure.

Finally, in the darkness, we see a reversed vase. The vase symbolizes virginity. There's also an apple, which symbolizes the original sin. We also notice the chair which is reversed too: “les jambes en l’air” (legs in the air), “une partie de jambe en l’air” is a french expression which litteraly means “get laid”.

The painting is well-known for its sexual and suggestive motifs, which were very popular during the ROCOCO PERIOD. The painting is in the permanent collection of the MUSÉE DU LOUVRE and has been shown all over the world.
