TRACK REVIEW: Deceptacon - Le Tigre
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"You got what you've been asking for, you're so policy free, and your fantasy wheels, and everything you think and everything you feel is alright, alright, alright, alright, alright."
Iconic. Catchy. Politically invigorated. The first track, Deceptacon, of Le Tigre's eponymous debut album is a pop punk diatribe discussing issues of apoliticism and feminism.
Deceptacon primarily focuses on censorship of political issues and the lack of fire that people have to fight for their beliefs. Critiquing the reduction in intentional meaning behind lyrics, the song references Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp, Bomp) by Barry Mann with the nonsense line "who took the bomp from bompalompalomp". Additionally, she criticises people who "depoliticize my rhyme" and how people who take an apolitical stance pretend that "everything you think and everything you feel is alright, alright, alright, alright, alright".
Furthermore, the track was a way of feeding feminist politics into the mainstream by discussing the objectification of women. This chiefly focuses on the commonplace nature of sexism within people's sex lives: "You want what you want but you don't want to be on your knees". Le Tigre uses their lyrics in order to highlight how women become, as phrased by Kathleen Hanna herself, "complicit in their own dehumanisation" through sex when their partners do not give them equal treatment.
Through the use of memorable lyrics and split audio (which creates the sense of being in the middle of a necessary conversation) this riot grrrl band created an epochal track that remains popular to this day.

“So the song we’re playing next is one I wrote, and it’s called ‘Viz’ (crowd cheers). This song was kind of inspired by this interaction I had in a club back in the 90s, not a gay club, but I was there with this guy- it was Jimmy Fallon actually- and I’d just released my lesbian calendar. And he said to me, isn’t it odd for a man to be releasing a lesbian calendar? And I said, actually I’m a woman, I just happen to have a moustache. And I walked away from that interaction thinking, that man just found out that I exist.”
- JD Samson, Le Tigre UK tour 2023

Bit of a story time - so my blog's sub head and first online moniker come from a Le Tigre song (Tres Bien). When I first heard Mediocrity Rules I was blown away - the lyrics, the riffs, I had never heard anything like it. Le Tigre were my first foray into alternative music, hell into punk music. Then as I listened more I not only learned what it meant to be punk, I learned about feminism too. Then I also learned about queer identity. As someone raised in a conservative + religious suburb I always assumed queer people never spoke about it, or were never seen or heard. I quickly learned about our history and also learned that I wasn't alone, that the feelings I had been feeling (not only about being gay, but the reaction and stigmas of gays) were okay, and not all that different than any other gay people. I owe SO much to this band for shaping me, and getting to see them play in Toronto (a city I grew up around and live in now) with my current partner gave me all the feels. Being surrounded with other queer people it made me realize I'm probably not the only who experienced the same. And THAT'S community motherfucker. I've never felt more validated or seen and I wanna thank Kathleen, Johanna, and JD from the bottom of my rainbow heart forever.
