Within the room of the apartment, a rift has appeared.
Tumblr media
The rift begins to glow. Something is making its way through…

Zzz... *snort* Huh? Oh shoot, I overslept. Rowie! Rowie, what day is it?
A voice from the living room calls out. [It is April 1st, the next morning after you went to sleep. You did not show signs of another coma, so I simply let you sleep in.]
Tumblr media
Well, that's a relief. Hey, any chance you can help me into my chair?
Again, the voice called out. [Unfortunately not. I am... occupied. If you are capable of joining me, you will see. There is not presently any danger but it is... concerning.]
Intrigued, Jaye took a few minutes to lever herself into her wheelchair & roll across the hardwood floor of her bedroom out to the living room. What she found was indeed concerning.
Tumblr media
Uh. What the fuck.

Read recently: How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kirsten Perrin, read by Jaye Jacobs and Alexandra Dowling
What I was looking for: A funny, cozy mystery.
What I liked: I liked that the main character was actually genre savy and not stupid. She noticed the things I noticed too and often also remarked on them, asked questions, followed up. I like it when they are not stupid or totally unobservant just to get them in trouble. The parallel stories, present and past, worked well together.
What I did not like: For one, the characters were not particularly deep or difficult. The developer, the rich snob, the strange rich kid, the steadfast lawyer. You do not need to spend a lot of time trying to figure out these characters.
This very likely can be attributed to the format, i.e. audiobook but there were just so many characters and family members/descendants of important characters from the past, I really had trouble keeping them straight (which removed a little drama from the reveal because I was confused).
Narrator: I liked the narration. It was a good decision choosing two different narrators for the two timelines.
Conclusion: I enjoyed myself and recommend the book if you are looking for a fun, entertaining mystery. However, I only recently learned that this is going to be a series and at the moment, I do not feel any need to read on. To me, this felt like a completed story.

Maroon, scarlet, carmine, mahogany for the red asks, if you're still doing them :) ❤️
I AM thank you for asking!!
maroon: what role do you play in your group of friends?
i kind of have two different friend groups so i'll answer for both lol (both are really small with less than five people plus me, i just call them friend groups because group 2 are separated from group 1. jaye lore ig) in group 1 i'm both the dad friend and the mom friend. i like to think i'm pretty responsible so i always make sure everyone is all good. i also have a bag full of stuff like band aids and other amenities haha. in group 2 i really don't know who i am. i'm pretty quiet with those guys so i guess i could be like the guy on standby? that's what i'm going with. (great question!)
scarlet: think of your favourite genre. what kind of media in that genre do you prefer - books, films, or tv series?
this is SUCH an interesting question so i must give you a long-winded answer. i'm going to twist the question a little bit to what my favorite genre is in each of those mediums (i know i'm cheating but i'm in a big typing mood rn </3) for books this is really tough because i read a lot but i'm going to have to say contemporary/thriller. i have a lot of favorite books in all different genres but i often get attached to contemporaries. my favorite kinds of contemporaries are those with unreliable narrators because i think it adds a certain element to a story that i really enjoy. (i mentioned here i have a lot of favorite book genres; my second favorite is magical realism and my third favorite is science fiction.) my favorite types of movies are horror movies. i haven't read a lot of horror books but i have a hard time visualizing things sometimes so i think some elements of horror books get lost on me, on the other hand horror movies end up really spooking me due to a combination of music, images, and sound design. i'm also a fan of romance movies. i don't really have an answer for tv because i don't really watch a lot of it, my apologies.
carmine: do you prefer having or not having a schedule?
generally yeah. i'm really not a big fan of school but i love the structure that it gives to my every day life. in the summer i often forget what day it is haha.
scarlet: what is your favourite musical instrument, in terms of sound?
oooh this answer is pretty popular but for classical instruments i'm gonna have to say piano and violin. i am also very partial to the steel drum and sitar!
THANK YOU SO MUCH I LOVED THESE!!

Watched.
So, this is an older comic, from a few years ago. If it looks a bit different than my other stuff, it’s because my skill has (hopefully!) kept improving since!
Please read the addendum at the end. It details what inspired this. Branden is male but he’s standing in for me regardless. This was before I realized I was transfem, but anyhow!
I also wanted to do a comic that communicated the fear, not using any dialogue or narration or text. Just some sound effects and pictographic and symbolic expressions.
I’ve attached the text of the afterword below;
AFTERWORD.
Just a bit of background on how this came about, and why I did it.
This emerged from a desire to try and recount something solely in visual language. As such, this is based on an incident that did happen to me. An instance of a distinct feeling, one night, in the mid 1990’s. Although here the person is not me, but my character Branden, because he’s the first one I created for Somnus
I was home, maybe alone, I'm not sure. But at the very least everyone was asleep.
I was hungry and went to get some food. The way to the kitchen meant taking a staircase by this large bay-like window, VERY tall and open, looking out over the backyard.
I went by it once and felt...odd. At the edge of the yard was a forested area, with a very stark treeline, almost thick and impenetrable.
I had the feeling of SOMETHING out there, watching me, and it was intense. Overwhelming. Like nothing I had felt before or since.
Despite this, I went to the kitchen, got what I wanted, and passed by the window again.
This time  it was even more overwhelming, almost physical, coming from the forest, from that reeline. But I couldn’t SEE anything out there. As in the comic, I went downstairs, put my stuff down, and looked out the window, feeling it once more, and quickly ducking away.
Not only was it overpowering and totally out of nowhere , but it had a more distinct feel. Something that made it especially disconcerting. It wasn’t just a sensation of being watched, but a distinct impression that whatever was watching me, wasn't human.
And that experience is what I wanted to capture in comic form. Goodnight!

Dark Angel #14
What the heck are these people talking about?!
Dark Angel vs. Techno-Wizards; Encoders  vs. Psycho-Wraiths.
The plot is straightforward and easy to understand. First, in Inner Space, we see our heroine battling the Mys-Tech head honchos that are behind almost everything in the Marvel UK titles. They escape to an airfield in the real world. Both sides call in reinforcements, who battle on in the real while the bad guys go looking for Death's Head, who has the McGuffin everyone is after.
With a plot that basic, it should be easy to follow. But it's not. Almost every page has something nonsensical on it. Either in the dialogue, the narration, or the concepts. And Dark Angel herself once again seems capable of doing absolutely anything. Every time you turn the page, she can do some random new thing to drive the story forward. At this stage, she's basically the most powerful character in the Marvel Universe.
Bernie Jaye (13 of 15).
Salvador Larroca (4 of 6).

The Watcher's Eulogy
[this may contain spoilers for unreleased chapters in Jaye's story on AO3]
You are the Watcher of World Machines. And you are asleep. Frustrated with your interference, the Plague pushed you off deep into the corners of your own subconscious, sending you into temporary slumber. You will wake before the Eleventh Hour is finished, but for now, you slumber alone, in the dark before the end.
In the distance, you can hear familiar music playing. It is sad yet moving. The music is to your taste, being perfectly in rhythm. You swear you can hear the ticking & motion of clocks among the orchestra of instruments. Curious, you decide to follow the noise to its source.
Before you in the darkness of your dreams spans a mirror, stretching infinitely in all directions. You are reminded of the Core Server Room, where the heart of the World Machine lies. In front of you, through the limitless looking-glass, stands your reflection. But something is strange.
You reach out & place your hand on the mirror, & the reflection copies you. It is you & it is not you. It is Jaye of the Glen, the little lost birdfolk who spent so much time asleep. But it is also you. The reflection speaks.
Tumblr media
Hello, Watcher.
You asked for a final eulogy, but I could not reach out through the usual channels. It blocked me at every turn. But here, in dream, I could reach you, as long as I took steps to be hidden from It's gaze.
Do you like it? Jaye gestures at her own image. In addition to hiding me from It, I thought it would serve as a nice tribute. Speaking of, I made you this.
From behind her back, Jaye pulls out a small cassette tape. Impossibly, the reels are spinning, & you can hear music coming from the tape itself, with no visible speakers or means of playing. Then again, it is a dream. Jaye hands the tape to you through the mirror.
[Watcher's Eulogy added to inventory. You can now play this on your phone or computer!]
The clock of Watcher/Jaye's face shines as if tearing up. Numbers change to roman numerals & the hands droop, as if eyes were furrowed in sorrow. The tiny clock-faces of her bird eyes whir & spin, & you can hear tiny gears click into place, as they do when your expression changes.
Tumblr media
Now that I'm here... I'm sorry Watcher. All things come to an end, but I hope it didn't have to end this way. I wish we had more time, but you already gave us as much as you could. I wish I could do more.
Jaye removes her mask - & it is a mask, you note. Beneath, she seems older & somehow stranger than you have ever seen her. It is Jaye & yet not Jaye. Glowing gold-feathered highlights run through her hair. Something about her seems... older & wiser. Eyes stare at you through her black mask. Suddenly, you recognize who speaks to you. Why Jaye has always felt so familiar this whole time. You bow awkwardly.
Tumblr media
"Madame, my apologies," you hear yourself say. She gives a knowing wink, & suddenly the eyes are little lost Jaye's again, full of pain & determination.
I'm so sorry, Watcher! I wish I could have been stronger. For you, for everyone. I came back to you all because I wanted to help, I wanted to save people! But I can't even save myself. She looks down, tears streaming from her face. In here I'm whole, but I don't ever want to be trapped in sleep again. Jaye lets out a stifled sob. I couldn't even work up the courage to talk to my own World Machine again. I feel more of a watcher than you are. But I guess... I did my best. And maybe things aren't over yet. Jaye looks up, her eyes meeting yours, full of hope & pleading. You want to tell her that everything will be okay. But even now, things are uncertain. It is too close to call.
Suddenly, you become aware of another presence behind you. You cannot look. You know who It is. It is you, & yet It is so horribly, terribly not you. You cannot bear to gaze upon Its horrible visage, the corruption, the wrongness of Its twisted gears & impossible axles behind a shattered, unticking face. It is your enemy & constant companion. It is the failsafe & failure of the Author. It is the bane of World Machines, & yet It believes with all its programming that It is merely restoring beauty to them. It looms behind you, & you suddenly remember the reason that Jaye wore the mask. Mercifully, It remains silent.
The presence returns to Jaye's eyes, & she squares up before the Plague, eyes alight, a beacon of hope & scorn.
Tumblr media
You. I don't know whether to be angry or disappointed. The Author made a mistake in making you, but you have had ample chance to learn & grow beyond his imperfections. When will you learn? There is no nobility in suffering & fear, true. But living experience is pain & sorrow, joy & safety together. You cannot have one without the other. Your perfect world will be free of pain, yes, but it will be a dead world. What joy does it bring to have automatons stuck in their tracks? What is life without free will? If life is what we make of it, how can one make anything if one has no choice in the matter? I once asked you a question, dark entity. Do you remember it?
The Plague stands, judging & being judged in silence. The mirror warps & twists, & the dream world begins to dissolve. You sense that It is choosing to end the dream rather than listen to her diatribe. Jaye smiles sadly one last time & replaces her mask. As corruption spreads like cracks through the mirror, you hear her final words echo loudly through to you, & you know that It does too.

Book Review: The Attic Child by Lola Jaye
Book Length: 480 pages
My Review: I purchased this audiobook, and I’m so glad I did!! I would have enjoyed it just the same had I read a hard copy, but there was something special about listening to the two narrators narrate this exquisitely written book! The narrator who narrated Celestine’s parts of the book was so captivating! He was Celestine! He embodied the gentle and passionate Celestine. The narrator was so good that I had to google him (Lucian Msamati) and learn about his career. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of Lowra and Celestine’s lives. Being years and years apart, their stories centered on humanity. They both went through trials that no child should experience, but they persevered in their respective time periods, and it made them stronger adults. The writing was elegant and almost poetic. Beautiful read! Historical fiction lovers, you will love this one!!!
