Most of the comics I read are Marvels from 1993. Every time I read a comic, I post a comment. That's pretty much it.

Death Hunt

Death Metal #4
Enjoyable and satisfying.
"You just gave me a reason to go on living!"
So much to enjoy here: The script's use of the Mys-TECH characters, the planet's clueless inhabitants, DM's renewed interest in living, etc. Also, the final destination of the bomb was hilarious. Really made me laugh. Fun storytelling from cover to cover.
The final page left me primed. I could totally read a DEATH METAL ongoing series. (Even if Bareknuckles reminds me to much of Killpower.)

Patsy Walker #37
Silly but funny.
Patsy is forced into a date with a slob.
Her efforts to get out of it are amusing. The way it all backfires in her at the end is particularly funny.

The New Warriors #39
Strong.
The aftermath.
I do love it when Marvel writers script their superhero characters in a realistic way. Here's a sombre issue where the team members try to deal with what just happened to them and their loved ones. And what they did in response. And can't do.
It's high quality stuff; intelligent. I wouldn't want downbeat issues like this on a regular basis, but I also feel like if the Marvel Universe was a real place then this kind of thing would happen to the heroes all the time.

Death Hunt
Tumblr media
Death Metal #3
Another fun issue.
"I don't want to be saved!"
This works really well because Marvel has nothing else like it. A killer robot who wants to die, or to be left alone. It also works because the action is wild and over-the-top. And it works because it's funny. It doesn't take itself too seriously. Consequently, it's just a blast to read.

Bulletproof
Tumblr media
The Punisher War Zone Annual #1
Good art; so-so story.
Mobsters gather in Atlantic City to buy new armour.
On one hand, it's hard to get excited about something so basic as bulletproof armour in the Marvel Universe. On the other hand, it kinda makes sense that everyone in this universe would want something like this, with so many super-types running around.
The story is told in broad strokes. The new hero is ridiculously naïve, his partner/confidant is a obviously a one-note bad guy from the get-go. The only surprises are: 1, how easily the hero turns killer, and 2, his life-changing decision on the final page.

The Sins of the Father
Tumblr media
Guardians of the Galaxy #42
Good.
"The first born son of Odin could not wield Mjolnir, for he was no longer worthy!"
The 4-page history of future Thor slows the pace a lot. So do the 5 pages with Heimdal and Aleta in trouble "at the outer fringe of the galaxy." When you include Mephisto, that's 10 pages that take us away from the conquest of Asgard. Which happen very fast and off-panel. Yet, the issue is undeniably entertaining and the final page is very satisfying indeed.

Slugfest.
DM vs. Alpha Flight
Not as much story as issue 1. This one is pretty much a long continuous battle with interludes dotted throughout. The robot is very cool, and the action is decent. The way the fighting stops is satisfying. As slugfests go, this one is above average.

Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear #2
Man, this is slow.
Matt gets revenge on his father’s murderers; kills a hooker; meets Elektra.
And everything moves at a snail’s pace. It looks great but it’s not very exciting. 3 more issues of this is a lot. The whole exercise feels a cynical cash grab designed to make comicbook fans wet themselves but give them nothing of substance.

Death Urge
Tumblr media
Death Metal #1
Clever; cool.
Death Metal has gone on a murderous rampage across six worlds. Argon sets out to stop him.
This is a big helping of fun. If you like big robots and complex plots then this is the comic for you. The use of the Argon character is ingenious. The violence is crazy. Consider me hooked.

Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear #1
This drags in places.
A re-telling of Matt’s childhood.
It’s hard to get very excited when we know these events so well. The art and script are both impressive, but it still feels like a last minute fill-in. The pace being so slow doesn’t help.

The Masters of Silence [Marvel Comics Presents #147]
Good.
The Masters take on a biker gang.
And they decimate them in a battle that lasts "six and a half seconds." Wow. The action is really good, really brutal, and the ending packs a punch.
This is the last appearance of the Masters of Silence.

Thy Kangdom Come

Avengers: The Terminatrix Objective #4
An okay conclusion to an okay mini-series.
"my struggle against Alioth has been all that has kept your era from falling into his clutches... until now."
I went into this series with high expectations. They were not met. But what I got instead was passable entertainment. Not good enough for the main AVENGERS title at this point in time, but it would have worked just fine a story spread across a couple of annuals. Having Kang back was fun.

Family Honor, Poisoned Memories
Tumblr media
The New Warriors #38
Dark.
Final showdown with Kimeiko Ashu.
Ashu is the weakest part of this. He's a fairly bland villain with a generic revenge motivation. He drags a very good story down. It's a grim story that definitely separates the book from other teen-team books like X-FORCE or NEW MUTANTS. The ending is strong, sending Rage down a dark but perfectly understandable path. Any other conclusion would have been trite/forgettable.
The art is beautiful.

Fellow Travellers
Tumblr media
Ghost Rider [Marvel Comics Presents #137-142]
Enjoyable.
"The Masters are besieged by an army of the undead and I stand paralysed, powerless to aid them."
Pages 1-24: Straightforward stuff, well told. The predictable hero vs hero bit feels like padding, but the villain (when we get to him) is certainly interesting and formidable.
Pages 25-48: There isn't quite enough story for 48 pages, but it does mean we get plenty of action to take us to the finish line. The Masters (in their first appearance outside IRON MAN) don't make much of an impact, being less and less relevant as the story goes on. This is the Ghost Rider's show all the way and he is as enigmatic/cool as ever. The way he's kept out of the fight for a while is fresh, and his final confrontation with the villain is well thought out also. Satisfying.

House of Rave
Tumblr media
Iron Fist [Marvel Comics Presents #141]
Awful villain who spooks very easily.
"He moves the drug out of his club"
Again, Danny is sporting a bit of an attitude. A police friend wants his help, but our hero isn't initially interested. Under his new scripter, Danny doesn't really want to do anything. Eventually, he gets involved. (Otherwise, we'd have no story.)
For no reason that makes sense, the bad guy decides to attack Danny as soon as he sees him sneaking into his nightclub. Legally, the guy is in the clear, so attacking Danny for no reason makes no sense. It's not like he has evidence or anything; he's just walking into the building. It makes even less sense that the villain rigs a bomb to explode should he lose the battle. Huh?
This is the 22nd and final appearance of Iron Fist in MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS. All of them were junk.

Guardians of the Galaxy #41
Exciting stuff.
"Now it begins... Take Asgard by storm! No prisoners!!"
This is very enjoyable indeed. Straightforward storytelling and crisp, clear artwork. All of the regulars get a chance to impress, and they are a fun team to follow. The villains they face here are cool and interesting. The Loki storyline is very strong, too. Cannot wait to see where all of this is going.

Avengers: The Terminatrix Objective #3
Bland.
“If Alioth wins, he will destroy everyone’s ability to travel through time.”
It’s hard to care about any of this. It feels like everyone is going through the motions. There’s a bit of action and a bit of time travel and a revelation or two. It’s fine.
