Salvation for the Damned!
Tumblr media
Daredevil #325
Flawed but enjoyable.
DD & Elektra vs. Hellspawn; the Snakeroot; Erynys.
41-page chapter brings the storyline to a mixed-bag conclusion. Some parts are okay, and other storytelling choices are headscratchers. As with the previous instalment, there's little or no narration on display. And what there is isn't ridiculously overwritten, as has been the style in this title for a long while now. The absence of narration helps clarity enormously and makes for a smoother reading experience.
This long-running storyline tested my patience. Some of the central ideas driving it were flimsy, to say the least, and it wasn't immediately clear what was happening a lot of the time. But... it got better towards the end. I didn't particularly enjoy the choices that concluded the story, but at least I understood what was happening in most scenes. The status quo for the series is now changed in a way that doesn't interest or excite me.

Tumblr media
Daredevil #324
Best Chichester issue in almost 2 years!
DD & Stone vs. Morbius
Little or no pretentious narration, lots of plot development, and a guest star that fits into the ongoing storyline really well. It's still flawed, of course, but it mostly reads well and parts of it are entertaining. Siege's departure is clunky and some of the shorter scenes don't make sense. But Matt's secret being out and him coming face to face with Elektra is enough to compensate.

Conflict
Tumblr media
Daredevil #323
Frequently incomprehensible filler.
DD & Siege vs. Venom
This can be hard to follow, both in terms of the big picture and the individual scenes. Continuity between chapters is weak. The previous issue ended by apparently setting up a fight between DD and Siege. But we open here with no such battle. In fact, it appears that some time has passed and they are pals again. Likewise, an earlier instalment ended with DD talking to Eddie Passim and the next one had him finding him again. It always feels like there are details or full scenes that I've missed out on. It's exhausting.
Within the scenes, the combination of long-winded scripting and obtuse artwork means you frequently have to put concerted effort into understanding what exactly is happening. It's exhausting.
The battle with Venom as pointless and easily defused. For some reason, one scene is a total non-sequitur and has a short debate about pornography. While another scene is DD once again seeing a sai and being reminded of Elektra. That has happened in almost every chapter now. And he's always shocked/surprised. Every single time. I just want this to end now. It's exhausting.

Confrontation
Tumblr media
Daredevil #322
More of the same.
DD & Siege vs. the Snakeroot
The chat here between DD and Eddie Passim is much the same as the last one, just with a tiny bit of new information. It's honestly frustrating that, after 4 full issues, we still know so little and so little has actually happened. This is equally true in the Ben Urich plot. It looked promising at the start when his new intern found out about Matt Murdock being DD. But the story hasn't moved forward at all. Not even a little bit.
The only bright moment in these 23 pages when it is strongly implied that Foggy know Matt's secret. That came out of nowhere.

Transgression
Tumblr media
Daredevil #321
Slightly better.
DD vs. Hellspawn
Two of Marvel's best characters at this point in time are Siege and Venom. Both are added to the ongoing storyline in this chapter. Neither one really suits this story but I like them a lot so I'm happy to see them pop up (briefly). This is also the chapter where DD gets his new costume. It doesn't look good and his reasons for switching to armour fail to convince but it's something different.
Most of this 23-page comic is DD fighting his doppelganger. Matt can't "see" this opponent, so that makes the fight a little bit interesting. We also get a better understanding here of what exactly the Hand wants with the abducted John Garrett and how they plan to use him to resurrect Elektra. There's a goofy logic in play, even if everything is taking a long time to happen.

Daredevil #320
More murky storytelling.
DD vs. Silver Sable
27 pages. And it feels it. The pace is lethargic. The fight with Sable is filler. By the end of this chapter, DD has finally come face-to-face with Eddie.
Away from all that, someone new discovers Matt’s secret identity. In a less crowded comic it might be a key moment. Here, it’s just another scene in a cacophony of unrelated moments.

Temptation
Tumblr media
Daredevil #319
This is hard work.
“The pictures Eddie put in my head.”
These 29 pages are all over the place. DD finds different homeless people and learns that an ex-Department of Defence agent called Eddie Passim is controlling them. Kinda. We learn that Silver Sable is also after Eddie.
But that’s only one thread in a packed issue where everybody talks like they read a thesaurus at breakfast, and the narration serves to makes everything less clear. You really have to study this carefully to understand what is happening. And what's happening isn't worth all that effort.

Private Viewing
Tumblr media
Detective Comics #597
Not quite as strong as part one.
"But the war goes on forever... and I'm only one soldier. Only one wounded soldier."
There are two elements in play here. The story, which kinda fizzles out before the end. And the idea of Batman, battered and bruised but not broken. It's an appealing idea. He sure takes a beating in this one. But he won't stop. I like that about this series.

My Enemy, My Son!

Fantastic Four #384
A dip in quality.
Scott Lang joins; Franklin attacks Susan.
The continuity between this series and FANTASTIC FOUR UNLIMITED is all over the place. Some of this story clearly takes place before issue 5, and some takes place after! But it all happens in reverse order, so it seemingly cannot be reconciled. How on earth did they mess this up so bad?
Anyways, Ant-Man actually joins the team here and soon proves his worth. That said, the situation he faces feels highly contrived so that only he could sort it out. Meanwhile, Franklin discovers Susan's deeply buried secret but things don't go well for him in the end.

Stroud's Report
Tumblr media
Morbius #10
Cartoonish.
Simon Stroud ambushes Morbius.
Some interesting ideas here, such as Morbius using hypnosis to make Stroud forget him. But the scene with the CIA guys and the cop is over-the-top and silly. And Vic Slaughter undoes the hypnosis at the end, so what was the point? Something could have done with that.

Video Nasties
Tumblr media
Detective Comics #596
Seedy.
Random beatings in the street being filmed.
Another Batman story where I really like the tone and subject matter. No fantasy in this one, just a grim tale of videos of attacks in dark alleys. But it's perfect for the lurid world that Batman inhabits.
The cliffhanger that ties in to the ongoing alien invasion is an unwelcome intrusion.

A Bluer Slice of Heaven
Tumblr media
The X-Men Annual #2
Good storytelling.
Revanche; Pyro; Jonathan Chambers.
I've been wondering where the storyline with the two Psylockes was going to go. And now I know. Maybe I'm actually interested in them now. Maybe. Whether it pans out or not, as a storyline that will ultimately get me invested, I will say that the revelation - concerning Revanche - packed quite a punch here.
The real highlight of this comic for me was seeing the plot threads from the last Freedom Force story get picked up and dealt with in an intelligent manner. Seeing Pyro and the others together again was actually kinda cool. And the storyline developed in a genuinely interesting way.
The X-Men came across very well here. They didn't end up in a pitch battle against Chambers over the Legacy Virus and I appreciated that maturity. Both in the characters and in the scripting.

Wrath of a Woman Scorned
Tumblr media
Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #4
Standard stuff.
"You must help us liberate the Inhumans from under Rancor's oppressive heel!"
We're in familiar territory here. There are different chapters and most have one Guardian facing one villain in battle. The chapters with Yellowjacket, Charlie-27 and Nikki are the best. Away from all of that there's a heck of a lot of exposition-heavy dialogue/narration. Some of it very clunky.
The most interesting aspect of the story is the ending. The Guardians leave very quickly without helping the Inhumans. Talon pulls them out because Rancor forces him to get her pregnant! Gotta say, you don't see that storyline very often!

The New, Nefarious, and Downright Nasty Frightful Four
Tumblr media
Fantastic Four Unlimited #5
Not terrible.
The New Frightful Four.
The Wizard escapes prison using a special chess board (?!). The FF has replaced Reed Richards with Scott Lang (?!). Klaw releases Sharon Ventura from the chamber she was it. It's never made clear exactly why he's doing this. Or what he wants to achieve. It just seems like a really stupid thing to do. At this point, the Wizard snatches them away to be in his new gang. Really getting into the swing of things, Sharon immediately turns full-on evil with no prompting. Whatever sympathy I was feeling for her over in the (excellent) regular title evaporates instantly. There, she was attempting suicide. Here, she's just an evil bitch.
Hilariously, the Red Ghost shows up for no reason whatsoever. It's just a random thing that happens. The script doesn't even bother to explain it. Instead, we are told it's "fate." Next time we see the FF, they are in their locker room (?!) at Four Freedoms Plaza. It's unisex, too, because Sue is changing in front of the guys (?!). Later, she and Scott Lang go on a date (?!) and they are abducted. In fact, all of the FF members are abducted. And each one is forced to fight one member of the Frightful Four. These fights are actually okay. The Sue vs. Sharon one is remarkable because Sharon is - and I can't stress this enough - a super-villain now. We then learn that all these fights are happening in... the Wizard's old house in the suburbs (?!). But, at the last minute, the Frightful Four's victory is snatched away because something something something cause and effect something something.
The Fantastic Four then escape the house having forgotten everything that happened (?!). Why did they forget? Absolutely no idea. It must be "fate" again. Presumably it's written this way so that all this nonsense doesn't ever have to be referenced in the regular title. Will Sharon stop being evil in the regular book, I wonder?
The previous issue was complete drivel. A chore to read. However, in sharp contrast, this issue falls into the so-bad-it's-good category. It's so hilariously bad that I truly loved it. Every scene was dafter that the one before. It should be a cult classic. Essential reading for every FF fan. I was sorry to finish it because it was making me chuckle.

The Night Negative Man Went Berserk
Tumblr media
My Greatest Adventure #83
Above average.
Negative Man does not return to Larry Trainor!
This story is much more linear and cohesive. Unlike what went before it doesn’t feel like different mini-adventures tied together. It’s all about one thing - NM out there causing problems - and it doesn’t feel crowded.

Dull.
Crossfire traps Hawkeye and Mockingbird in a basement with an old movie star and her butler.
And everybody talks a lot. And there are references to really old movies. I have seldom seen a more boring superhero battle.
