Hey, Chance! 💚 Thank you for the aro ask!

1. When did you realize you were arospec?

May of 2022!

I had never heard of the word until I was doing character identity research and it wad late at night when it just suddenly clicked.

15. What are some things you associate with arospec identities?

So most of the things I associate have come straight from Tumblr or other aro blogs, but:

Absolutely anything green, specifically 💚, froggies, dragon scales, SHARKS, and my personal favorite: our mascot the Dino.

16. Do you have any arospec OCs? If so, tell us about them.

There's an argument to be made that literally all of my characters ever are arospec, because I thought I was writing them experiencing what I was experiencing. Which was aromanticism.

Anyway.

I'll hit a few highlight characters:

Gwenevieve Hampshire

My first character to be recognized as aro. (I think. Some of them were close.) Gwen's aroallo, though she does not know it or even know the words. Her aromanticism is definitely there if you know to look for it in The Animatronic Saga, but it's becoming a focal point in my secondary series.

Javon Midori

Javon was actually one of the characters I thought escaped my aro blast. 🤭 He's ace, but I thought his relationship with another character kinda excluded him. Then I realized said relationship is just a really wonderful qpr and my baby is platoniromantic with really strong alterous attraction. He loves her, but who even knows how.

Tomas

My baby with the most labels! I actually have a joke in one of my stories about him just trying to claim the whole rainbow alphabet.

Tomas was my first bi character, but he's also demiromantic. He loves his boyfriend with his whole heart.

Angie Farley

One of my aro girls from my Aro Movie. Angie was the first character I created to be intentionally aro. She's aroflux and in a qpr (not yet in the timeline of my movie, but still) with Ruth. Working through her identity in the movie has been such a cathartic experience.

Ruth Eymmons

My romance-repulsed aro stand-in of a character. I have absolutely adored getting to write stories and scenes featuring someone like me who is also in a beautiful and wonderful relationship with someone who, to the ebst of her abilities, respects her boundaries and loves her just the way she is.

Camille

Literally the first character I ever created for writing, Camille's identity may end up being my favorite to write into existence. Because she's completely aro, but she also had a loving and devoted relationship with a woman and now she doesn't have any of those memories, but the woman in back in her life and she knows she cares? Question mark?

Okay, this is actually something I've never thought about before. So... yeah. (And my characters are from the future, but social doesn't exist, at least in the same form.)

Maybelle: posts nothing of her own. HOWEVER, she likes/follows/reposts anything artistic or poetic.

Gwenevieve: fashion blog. Has the most gorgeous outfits and camerawork and overlaid over the images are a bunch of historical facts she associates with the outfit.

Edward: his friends told him it would be fun. Posts mostly pictures of them or cool shots of the sky. Someone (not telling who) posted one of his workout videos-- he's checking his form-- and all his followers freaked out before he could take it down.

Emerson: adamantly declares he doesn't have it. Too modern, too cliche. He totally has a secret account to follow all his friends from and post funny videos.

Jade: doesn't understand. Posts the weirdest pictures that end up being actually stunning. Yes, it's just the bathroom floor, but it's also the endless nature of society. Yes, it's just half her shoes, but it's also how the world is stepping on the weak.

Javon: posts only text. It's either superiorly profound or inherently stupid. No in between. Also reposts as much social advocation as he can before it gets taken down.

WAIT WAIT WAIT I have an OC question for y'all who have characters from a fantasy world or from the past. if your characters were born in modern day what would their social media presence look like?

Using my Animatronic Saga cast:

Maybelle - will moan and groan and accept a portion of the work. There will be more slacking on her end, but she also won't allow any other slacking either.

Emerson - tells everyone that he'll do it. He doesn't trust anyone else to handle anything that might affect him or his grades. He'll just do it himself.

Javon - super excited to work with others. Happily splits up the work and discusses a plan to meet up and everything.

Maybelle: wads of paper, including any notes she's been given ever, wire scraps, and probably a whole ass transmission device

Jade: one knife, three or four apples, a half-eaten bag of cereal, two more knives, a pen

Javon: a couple of old rags, a fancy bracelet he does not remember taking, someone else's wallet

Cass: hair ties, a couple extra arrows, wire cutters, a pack of tissues

Character Interview VI: Javon Midori

Q: So it's been a while since we've heard from you. Anything you can tell us about how you've been spending the time?

A: Pretty much just getting pushed around. I'm not very good at not running my own show, so it's been an adjustment.

Q: How has the story changed from Book 2 to Book 3?

A: I don't know. I think things have just always been changing, slowly at least. We have to try to be ready for it.

Q: What lies ahead for your character in particular?

A: Some trials. For better or worse, some decisions he can't take back.

Q: Any budding relationships blooming?

A: Nah, still just my people. And no complaints there either.

Q: Is the story you're trying to tell different now?

A: I don't want it to be a broken story, you know? I'm always scared it might be.

Q: What do you want readers to know before they start Book 3?

A: It's easy to forget, but it was our first try, too.

Hello, darling. Gotta talk about my lovely automatons for this one.

Maybelle loves chocolate chip cookies, especially when she bakes them herself like her parents did.

Javon has a serious sweet tooth. The kid grew up smuggling important things and also all the candy he could get his sticky fingers on.

Cass really likes light desserts, some of the citrus flavors in particular. Scones and poundcake and sorbets.

Okay. So I'm using Animatronic Saga characters, because they're from a very modern but twisted future and I think it'd be funny.

Jade - a whole ass tent. And a portable stove. Maybe an entire camping supply kit even.

Javon - the kid is taking everything he can get his hands on. A scooter. Several iphones. Definitely a pair of those fuzzy dice (they're a gift for Vedo).

Javon Midori's getting kicked out of a Chili's.

But only because Emerson dared him to steal one item from the servers as they passed until he had everything-- apron, notebook, pen, pocketful of straws, receipt book-- and then go pose as a server himself.

He worked as a server for a solid half hour before someone noticed and then chased him around the Chili's, Emerson cackling at the table.

Hehehe! I can't just let this ask go by without using it for my most good-heartedly rebellious character of all-time:

Javon Midori, smuggler apprentice.

The Animatronic Saga society is comprised of family-built rules. No loners. Everyone has their place. Sounds great.

Except it's really not.

And Javon, having been an orphan until Vedo picked him up, knows this better than most. Vedo is his family-- illegal family doing illegal business-- but family nonetheless.

So he goes with him. And he loves his life. He helps people and steals stuff from corrupt organizations. He's an assistant to one of the most nefarious smugglers of all time.

In another life, he probably wouldn't be all that rebellious, but in this one? Hell yeah.

Let's start from the top, shall we?

The Animatronic Saga

Maybelle Clark, Gwenevieve Hampshire, Edward Sundune, Emerson Haryl, Jade, and Javon Midori have one thing in common and one thing only: they're now on the run from Insignia, a corporation that wants them and wants to use them.

A 5-book series, The Animatronic Saga is really about the relationships between my characters and what situations and experiences will do to change people.

Secondary Series

Set 7 years after The Animatronic Saga comes to a close, my unnamed secondary series follows the same characters, but at a very different time in their lives.

Can't say much obviously, but this project has been really fun for character development and for engaging with more adult material and challenges.

Queer Superhero Story

Camille knows three things:

1) Five years ago, she woke up with no memories and the ability to heal people at her own expense.

2) She will do whatever she can to help all the people she can.

3) She's dreamed about the same girl ever since she can remember. And that same girl just appeared in her life.

A rewrite of my very first novel ever, my queer superhero story follows Camille as she realizes the life she's living isn't her first; five years ago, she was someone else entirely: The Orchid. A superhero. A hero with a magical ability that didn't hurt. A girl with a best friend, Roldan, and a girlfriend, Nia. And an Extraordinaire with enemies who've been waiting on her return.

StormWatcher

Ever since Kib Gree can remember, she's wanted what they have. The StormWatchers and their freedom. Trapped inside the isolated world of the everyday citizen after terrible weather ravages the planet, Kib yearns to escape it all and become the very thing her Mam and sister, Merieh, hate: the people supposedly protecting everyone, the StormWatchers who now run the world.

This story was born from my fear of bad weather, but it's grown into my back-burner piece about the choices we make. Especially the choices that decide between our homes and the people we care about and the life we think we want.

1940s - Jade. A kind of timelessness that changes once we hit the 50s.

1960s - Javon Midori. Unironically loves the peppiness.

1970s - Casanova Calvino would live and die for some disco and roller skates. But alas.

1980s - Emerson Haryl. Boys just wanna have fun.

1990s - Maybelle Clark. In another world, she's a grunge girl with anger issues instead of just... a... sci-fi girl with anger issues, I guess.

2000s - Edward Sundune. This boy was built for sad ballads.

2010s - Gwenevieve Hampshire would eat bubblegum pop of the 10s up.
