Lost Illusions: The Untold Story of the Hit Show's Poisonous Culture
"The show was a groundbreaking smash, but behind the scenes it devolved into such toxicity that even co-showrunner Damon Lindelof now says of his leadership: 'I failed.' A powerful excerpt from the new book Burn It Down" by Maureen Ryan."

Episode 198: Strikesplaining
In Episode 198, “Strikesplaining,” Elizabeth and Flourish are joined by screenwriter, executive producer, and longtime friend of the podcast Javier Grillo-Marxuach to talk about the Writers Guild of America strike. Javi breaks down how television writing, production, and compensation have changed drastically in his three decades in the industry, and how this action is connected to broader labor struggles facing workers today. They also talk about the specific ways this strike touches fandom, including how streamers’ exploitative practices affect everyone from the people making the shows to the people who want to watch them.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Episode 3 : vendredi 08 mars 2024 (enregistré le 24 février 2004) -> Anniversaire de l'actrice Andrea Parker  ...

No one's dogpiling Neil Gaiman for all the omensposting he's doing on Tumblr and on Twitter. Why would people do it to a writer with a name that's two or three kinds of non-anglic? hm
And before you wonder and hum har about certain voices here.

This. This is how creators should act in solidarity right now. Not selfishly, but minding that all of them right now are risking everything while actively fighting.
Unions only work if everyone works together for the shared goal. Especially against giants like these unions are facing. Let's help them. Weaken the position studios have toward their investors. Increase the pressure to give in to the demands of the strikers. Take away what they rely on us giving them: time and money. Stand with the WGA and SAG and stop streaming.

BW's Daily Video & Article LInk> The Witcher Showrunners Keep Digging That Hole
BW's Daily Video & Article LInk> The Witcher Showrunners Keep Digging That Hole
Catch more from The Critical Drinker on YouTube When it comes to the current crop of shows doing everything it can to tick off their fans, The Witcher seems to be near the top of the list. I’m not even a fan of the franchise and I can see everything going wrong. First they chased off Henry Cavill for wanting to be accurate to the books, then tried to say he was hard to work with (which failed)…

This is a masterclass in how worldbuilding occurs organically through the process of storytelling. If you are a creator, read it, and then save it so you can read again later. You’ll thank yourself.

All joking aside, I don't have the energy for a full rant right now -- but this show was deLIGHTful. It's basically the superhero answer to Pushing Daisies: heightened reality, whimsy, snark, and all the comic book tropes lovingly turned on their heads.
Oh, and a ton of Doctor Who references.

Strike Support Declining - Here's how you can continue to support the writers
Since the WGA strike started on May 2, the public has shown immense support for the writers—sending food, snacks, drinks, and encouragement from across the world all the way to Los Angeles, New York, and other picketing locations.
But loud and vocal strike support—in the news and in public spaces—is notably declining the longer the strike goes on. So we're bringing you a few ways to show writers, studios, and fellow fans: we're still here, and we still stand with the WGA.
1. Post on Twitter (and other social media sites)
You might think social media noise won't be noticed by the studios, but it CAN encourage individual WGA members—and slowly but surely put pressure on the studios to make a fair deal.
If you follow WGA members such as Adam Conover (Adam Ruins Everything), John Rogers (Leverage, Librarians), Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul), Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The Witcher) [and many many more you can find through their following lists], tell them you support them! Hashtag #IStandWithTheWGA #DoTheWriteThing and tell them that you and your fandom are prepared to support them as long as the strike lasts; that they deserve to have their demands met and you're with them all the way. Boost morale however and whenever you can!
Likewise, actively push back against misinformation/disinformation. See a TikTok claiming that all Hollywood writers are filthy rich and we shouldn't vocally support them? Correct it with well-sourced citations from the WGA, published news articles, and stories from those affected (like the time a writer on FX's The Bear attended the an awards show with his bank account balance in the negative, only to then win an award for Best Comedy Series—proving that good writers on award-winning shows still cannot make a living!)
Remember you can always link to Adam Conover's excellent explanation of WGA demands versus studio refusals, tweeted here.
2. Donate or boost fundraisers
You might be surprised to learn that the picketing locations are not always parties! Sometimes themed pickets are fun, and fandoms and celebrities occasionally are able to fundraise for a food truck or ice cream truck at picketing locations. However, that is the EXCEPTION and not the norm. Writers are asking for food & drinks at many locations.
There are many funds to donate to, and it can be overwhelming to pick one! But one that could use your support RIGHT NOW is the CBS Radford picket line:
Tumblr media
-If you're in LA, you can bring food and snacks directly to that picket line (or get food deliveries sent there, with instructions to be given to the strike captain on duty.) Strike locations are available on the WGA West website and are updated there.
-Or there's a pizza fund for the strike locations (unfortunately Venmo is a US-only donation option)
Tumblr media
-If you're not in LA, donate to the Entertainment Community Fund to support TV and film workers affected by the strike.
-More tips on donating to the strike in this great article!
-Lots of fandoms are organizing donations on their own, for instance the Our Flag Means Death fundraiser on Paypal (updated 30 July 2023 with new link) (available internationally). Check to see if your fandom has started a fundraiser... or start one yourself to show your support! We're happy to give tips on organizing your fandom!
As always, please boost this post and any and all well-sourced information that comes from the WGA or its members. We're happy to fact-check anything you send our way too.

“I think the struggle that we’re on is real, I think it’s valid. It is not one that is being made out of greed, but it is one that is being made against greed. I think the individual people who work at the corporations, many of them I have great relationships with, but corporations are not people, the people who make up corporations are not the corporation. We are fighting against a system that basically was both put together and also which was empowered by circumstance to be really horrible, and frankly I think all labor should be looking at this strike and saying, ‘When do we get our cut?’ Otherwise, you know, we’re gonna be living in a gig economy hellscape and I promise you you don’t want—that’s like Ready Player One shit, you’re gonna be in like an Airstream trailer on a scaffold someplace, you know, with your headset. You don’t want that.”

Even more in here
It boggles the mind that billion-dollar corporations are willing to hand stewardship of a globally consumed product that costs millions to people without the necessary experience, or the simple human decency, to do the job professionally and humanely.
Two years of what could be called the “Tallahassee mentality” was enough for him. The term comes from characters on the show poking fun at the Florida city. One day, the Lost offices got a letter from the mayor of Tallahassee, who gamely invited the show’s personnel to visit and enclosed brochures touting the city’s attractive qualities. “In response, Damon told the writers room to double down on Tallahassee, and when asked why, he replied with a straight face that the only thing funnier than punching someone in the face for no reason is punching them harder when they ask why,” Grillo-Marxuach said. “If you can imagine that as a management philosophy, you can understand what it was like to work on Lost.”
This is an infuriating and illuminating read

New writers haven't been learning how to write or showrun because there haven't been the opportunities for them to do so. Companies have been employing mini rooms and not paying for enough writers to do the job, so most of the time, they can't bring in new writers, people that need to learn.
As I've said elsewhere, these are some of the reasons that current shows aren't always great: not enough writers, not enough training, not enough time to do their job.

Lucy Lawless says they 'keep trying' to reboot Xena
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/lucy-lawless-says-they-keep-trying-to-reboot-xena/
Lucy Lawless says they 'keep trying' to reboot Xena
Tumblr media
Lucy Lawless has spoken about the multiple unsuccessful attempts over the years to reboot her 90s hit series Xena: Warrior Princess.
The New Zealand actress became a global star playing the lesbian icon in the fantasy series from 1995 to 2001.
In a new interview ahead of a trip to Australia this week, Lucy has weighed in on a possible return of the character to TV.
“They keep trying and it keeps foundering at the last step for various reasons,” Lucy told news.com.au.
“The thing is, you have to reboot it in a way that honours the old but is entirely new.
“If you can’t do it as well as or better than the original, then you can’t do it at all, really. You can’t do a lame version because it’ll just flop.”
The closest Xena came to returning was back in 2015, when it was reported US network NBC was developing a reboot.
At the time, the producer in charge, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, promised that Xena and Gabrielle would be depicted as a lesbian couple – not just subtext – if the show returned.
But by 2017, it was confirmed that particular reboot was sadly dead.
‘You should be so lucky to have that problem’
Lucy Lawless says that if the show did come back, she knows what type of role she’d want.
“Perhaps Hera? Or maybe, was it Labyrinth or was it The Never Ending Story where there’s the lady that’s made out of all the trash?” she said.
“Just some character role, but it would have to be either super characterful or super pivotal. There has to be something vital about it. I’m not there to play someone’s wife.”
The New Zealand actress went on to say she’s forever baffled by people who don’t want to known for one of their previous roles.
“To hear about actors wanting to get away from a role, I just felt like almost that was a cliché. You should be so lucky to have that problem,” she said.
“So many actors struggle their whole lives and never get a role that achieves this sort of household recognition.
“That sets you up for all kinds of other things. Whether you want to admit it or not, there’s benefits to that. So I’m very grateful.”
Lucy Lawless directs new documentary
Lucy Lawless is coming to Sydney this week for the Aussie premiere of her new project Never Look Away.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is screening at SXSW Sydney this week.
It’s a powerful documentary film on the life of gutsy Kiwi-born CNN photojournalist Margaret Moth, who blazed a trail as a war correspondent.
“I had no intention of directing. But when I received this email out of the blue saying, ‘do you want to make a film about my best friend Margaret Moth?’, my mind cast back to when she was shot [by a sniper in Sarajevo in 1992]. The whole country was riveted,” she said.
“I’d never ever wanted to direct before. It was as if Margaret picked me and booted me through the directing door. Now it’s all I want to do.”
