I am genuinely so close to rewriting newsies guys. The Broadway show that is. I don't wanna hear anybody complain about Katherine being underdeveloped when literally EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. IS UNDERDEVELOPED. IT'S A 2 HOUR MUSICAL I KNOW, BUT JESUS CHRIST. so I'm gonna list off things I'd add/remove/fix if I did rewrite it
Cowboy jack
I really liked the UK sets and the UK costumes so.... *snatch*
Polio definitely impacts Crutchie more because let's be honest, we all know he probably wouldn't make it past like, 23
I think the opening scene could definitely just be like Crutchie being anxious and Jack helping to ground Crutchie and at the end of Santa Fe (Prologue) instead of saying like, "Time for dreamin's done." I'd rather him say something like, "If you need me today don't hesitate to get me." I'M SORRY IF THIS SEEMS DRAMATIC I LOVE CRUTCHIE AND I FEEL BAD FOR HIM
Carrying the Banner stays relatively the same, but "Go get 'em cowboy!" Gets added back in
I don't like Katherine as Pulitzer's daughter. I don't. I LOVE Katherine, but I hate the "Oh I'm the daughter of your rival and I'm in love with you!" THIS ISN'T ROMEO AND JULIET GET OUT. sorry guys 😇 but still. And the fact Katherine is based off of Pulitzer's daughter that died as a baby also really rubs me the wrong way so instead of her being Pulitzer's daughter, I think it'd be cool if she came from a middle class family. I will expand on this later on in the post but bare with me here
Katherine's an alto.
Contralto to Alto depending on who's playing her but yeah
Alto supremacy
SARAH EXISTS!!!!!!! SARAH ILY COME HOME THE KIDS MISS YOU!!!!!! I think it'd be cute where in some scenes she's seen fixing Les and Davey's clothes. She should get a solo and Davey should too (except I can't write music)
Sarah would he a mezzo soprano or soprano
I really liked Davey's character in the 1992 movie more than I did the Broadway show if I'm being honest...... So... *snatch*
Now I know it'd make more sense to combine Katherine and Sarah into one character, but I wanna see Katherine and Sarah interact because yk they're both girls in the 1800s surrounded by a group of guys who probably smell like a cow pasture and I also like the idea of Sarah standing up for Katherine when Jack's like, "Shouldn't you be at the ballet?"
Hear me out on this guys please
FEMALE SPOT CONLON
In act two when Jack's like hiding out, I want Davey to talk abt being impacted by being poor as well and then Jack starts being really hypocritical and then he gets called out. (Preferably by Sarah)
The scene where Pulitzer is talking to Jack and then reveals Katherine is his daughter wouldn't work that way if Katherine wasn't his daughter, so instead I think it'd be neat if he was offering her a job for like, yk, a bit of money and she doesn't wanna accept it because she's working with the newsies and she feels it's more important to help them than it is to take the job but Jack walks in and Pulitzer hands Katherine the money and is like "omg thank you for taking the offer that was so sweet of you!!!!! 😇" and jacks like, "bro wtf I thought you were helping us out" and Katherine is forcefully escorted out of his office so she doesn't have a chance to explain
On the rooftop scene when they're arguing, instead of Katherine immediately kissing Jack, I want her to see him crying or something of the likes so she just hugs him because, c'mon. He needs it. And then Something to Believe In is the same except they don't kiss, not yet at least. (Sorry to all you newsbian shippers and javey shippers)
Uhmmm
I can't think of more rn but uhh Jack and Medda content
We get more of it 💪
Girlsies make a come back please and thank you
And I don't mind them being in traditionally masculine clothes, but I also want some girlsies to be in historically accurate girlsie clothes
Plus the show will be longer so there'll be time to go into multiple characters and actually like pick them a part a little bit
That's all I can think of for now um yeah you can add to this if you'd like and if I can think of anything more I'll add to it so yeah please don't dox me for my ideas 😇

asking you to stop and wait and stay
some javey angst for you on this fine friday!
.....
There were many nights when Jack felt like his family’s home was too big.
It was a problem he’d never dreamed he’d encounter as a boy. Not when he lived in a cruddy matchbox apartment with his parents, not when he was crammed into one shitty lodging house with twenty other boys, and not in the brief few months he spent working at the shipyards, learning to weld steel with unforgiving sun beating down on his skin. His life was rough cotton, sleeping in beds too small with too little room.
Katherine’s world was strange and empty and new, and Jack was finding that he almost preferred the uncomfortable comfort of bodies pressed against him out of necessity. Not he and Kath’s too-large bed, not the too-long hallways or the too-far distance between their too-big bedroom and his son’s, which seemed miles away when the boy was having a nightmare, cries splitting the too-quiet night. The household staff moved about like mice and the entire massive country estate seemed to drown in silence every night. It was different. No snoring newsboys, no gentle humming from his mamá, nothing but Katherine’s soft breathing and the occasional groaning of wood.
They’d been living here for five years and Jack still hadn’t quite grown used to it– the decadence of it all, the looming quiet, the heavy weight of responsibility. Maybe the halls were empty in an attempt to encourage them to fill it with family. That’s what the Kellys were doing, after all– they  had their first darling son Micheal and Kath was with child (they’d found that out recently and Jack was beyond elated), and he was positive there were more children to come. Happy about it, too. He’d always wanted a family.
They were young, though. Micheal was almost five and their little family was as small as he was, with his little hands and feet and his precious youth. Jack’s boy. When he slept well, the quiet never went away.
Jack found himself unable to rest when he felt truly suffocated by the empty air. He’d travel through endless hallways and wander into the sunroom he’d claimed as his art studio, sit and bask in the moonlight that streamed in from the massive paneled windows. Paint a thing or two. Kath and Micheal, Davey at his precious piano, Race with a cigar, Charlie sitting in the penthouse. It was one of those restless nights, with rain gently pattering around the window, when the Kelly family’s stuffy butler poked his head into the studio and murmured something or other about Jack having a visitor.
He thought disdainfully about unnecessarily long hallways as he made his way to the front of the house, following the flickering candle of the man ahead of him, dressed in nightgown and cap. Jack was still in his clothes from the day– he hadn’t even bothered sleeping. In one of his moods.
Guilt for joining the ‘upper echelon’ as Davey so furiously called it during his rants, maybe. Jack never stopped feeling guilt about it. The money, the clothes, the house.
Think of the man and he shall appear, apparently, because behind the door stood a rain-soaked Davey Jacobs. Wet curls clung to his forehead and his green eyes were bright and wild as he stared at Jack, flushed and breathless with his chest heaving beneath his soaked clothes. Jack realized, with slightly muted horror, that his best friend rode here on horseback all the way from the city in the middle of a rainstorm. He could see the miserable pony pawing at the mud in the lawn, somewhere in the distance as thunder rumbled.
“Dave. Jesus. Jesus, Davey, you gotta get inside–”
“No, no. No. Not necessary. I just– I’ve got to head straight back home as soon as possible, really, but I had to talk to you, Jackie. Just had to.” He breathed, running a freckled hand through that curly hair of his. It was black with rainwater, and Jack realized that at some point his butler had disappeared into the night. “We’ll talk on the porch?”
He felt his own lips ticking down into a frown. This was very un-Davey like behavior. Davey never did impulsive things. Something was wrong. “Sure.”
The ornately carved door clicked shut behind Jack, and they stood alone in the lamplight of the porch. A storm sang around them, and dim moonlight saved the rain-soaked lawn from the depths of the shadows. Davey’s face was half-blue and half-orange, a strange mix of lighting that Jack was almost certainly going to paint later. Though he couldn’t quite focus on thoughts of paint and color when his friend’s face was taut with worry.
“Jackie.”
“Everythin’ okay?” Jack asked carefully, feeling tension begin to coil up in his spine.
He received a terse nod in response, and David buried his probably-freezing hands in his pockets. “Yes Of course. I’m… I’m perfectly alright.”
“Good. That… uh… that’s great.”
Davey nodded, awkward and stilting just like he’d been recently. For some reason, the man had been acting strange. Long silences, bouts of intense staring, a lingering melancholy sadness that seemed to bubble up when nobody was speaking– Jack wanted to understand. Wanted to shake Dave up a bit– figure out what was going on in his curly head.
With a little bit of horror rising in his chest, Jack noted that Davey’s wide green eyes were growing glossy with tears.
“In short, I’m moving to France. Paris, specifically.”
Jack blinked. Mulled the words over in his head. Considered the actual possibility of Dave Jacobs moving to Paris. Felt his own chest shaking with a laugh as his eyebrows shot up. “Yeah, alright. Good joke, Dave.”
“No. I– I really am. Next week.” Earnestly, his voice rose in pitch. Jack almost frantically scanned his best friend’s face for any sign of lying but he found none– he’d known this man for six long years, and Davey was an awful liar. He was decidedly not lying about this Paris thing, and Jack was so baffled that he could scarcely form a logical thought. Davey drove his point forward with more rambling, elegant fingers fidgeting with the hem of his dripping coat, which was still dripping onto Jack’s porch. “I didn’t— I haven’t told you because I kept thinking I’d change my mind. I kept thinking it was too impulsive or too unlike me, and that I’d back out at the last second, but now I’m really seeing the deadline and I know I have to go. I know it’s what I need.”
“What you– what you need?”
Jack stared in disbelief, sort of feeling like the floor of the porch had dropped out beneath him. He felt like he was falling, like the air had been knocked from his chest, like he’d received a particularly nasty kick from his toddler. Davey was leaving. Davey was moving to another continent.
He forced himself to breathe. Calm down. Katherine would be telling him to count each breath, make his way to ten– he wasn’t patient enough for that. “How long? A month?”
“Well– no. It lasts until I… um… learn everything. Or until my mentor thinks I’ve learned everything which– well, that… uh– that could be years, Jackie, I’ll be honest.” He looked away, rife with guilt from face to feet.
And Jack wanted to explode. Years. Years of Davey being fucking unreachable, years without his best friend and closest confidant by his side? Jack couldn’t do that. Davey was his person. Davey was who he went to when Kath wasn’t around. Davey was the first person he’d invite over for a casual drink or a night in. He ranted about his problems to this man. Told him absolutely everything. How was he supposed to function for years without Davey? And how could Davey choose to leave him?
He’d stayed for Davey all of those years ago when the call to Santa Fe had been so strong it nearly killed him. Kath firstly, of course, but Davey was amongst the long list of reasons. Davey was supposed to ignore this Paris call. He was supposed to stay in New York with Jack. They were happy. They had good lives.
“How could you– I don’t understand how you could need to be so far away from everyone you love, Dave? You don’t need that!”
Davey winced, looking smaller than Jack had seen him in years. He almost looked seventeen again, which thrust Jack back into memories of a much simpler time. This man did not look like a twenty-three year old, confident maestro that played piano in Irving Hall and chatted pleasantly with all of New York City’s wealthy folk whilst talking shit about them right behind their backs. This didn’t look like Jack’s best friend. He wasn’t sweet and funny Uncle Day. This was David. Jack was looking at David and he scarcely knew him, because Davey would never up and leave him like this.
“Jackie, you don’t– you don’t get it.” He seemed to plead, lurching forward like a wooden toy sprung into action. Rigid and frantic. “I got accepted for an apprenticeship in Paris. I’m going to study under some of my favorite composers, Jack, I’m learning from Debussy himself. I know– I know it’s going to be difficult to be away from home, but I need to leave–”
He saw red and felt his hands curling into fists as unrestrained anger coursed through him. “You’re abandoning everybody that cares about you, Davey!”
“I’m not abandoning you or anybody, Jack, I still– I’m going to be a part of your life! I’ll write you letters every week and I’ll come back as soon as I can. And I’m not just leaving for the sake of leaving, I– I have my reasons and that– that’s actually why I’m here. I needed to talk to you alone. I need to tell you something. I can’t leave without telling you.”
“Telling me what?” Jack scoffed bitterly, still stuck between unbridled fury and disbelief.
“I–” Rigidly, he met Jack’s eyes. Davey looked almost like a frightened fawn, frozen like a statue with droplets of water slipping down the sides of his face from his damp hair. “You have to promise me that you won’t let this ruin our friendship.”
“Like movin’ to another country ain’t gonna ruin our friendship anyways?” He spat, almost bitterly, though there was a thick undercurrent of sadness beginning to roar beneath his mighty anger. Davey was right in front of him and Jack was already missing him like a lost limb.
His friend’s lips pressed into a thin line. Jack could see him biting back a sarcastic retort and almost wished he’d let it out, but Davey seemed seconds away from tears and miles away from considering anger at Jack. “It won’t. But that’s beside the point. I just– I need you to tell me that what I’m about to say won’t change the way you see me in your mind.”
“What the hell, Dave?” growing fed up with the cryptic bullshit, Jack groaned and pushed a hand through his hair. Dave just blinked at him and Jack clamped his jaw shut tightly. “Okay, Davey, I promise.”
“Good.”
The other man sucked in a breath, chest swelling with it. His clothes– every layer from overcoat to waistcoat, were clinging to him. He was soaked through to the bone and his curly hair was only just stopping it’s dripping. Jack could see the nerves in the way his fingers were fidgeting nonstop, feet rocking forward onto tiptoe and back onto heel repeatedly. Whatever this was, it was tearing him up. It had led him to ride into the countryside through a thunderstorm. It was making him speechless, green eyes staring up at the flickering lamp to the right of the ornate door. He took another deep breath. A third one after that. Lashes fluttered. Jack was beginning to grow incredibly anxious– what the hell was his problem?
Then, Davey turned to face Jack and met his eyes with an almost searing intensity, a single tear slipping from his left eye as he opened his mouth. “I’m in love with you.”
Huh.
Jack considered, briefly, that he might’ve been joking, but after the events of the night, that was doubtful. Something about the way Davey was looking at him… he felt his own heart dropping to his feet, chest clenching tightly. “Davey…”
“Don’t– just– don’t say anything, Jackie, please.” He begged, lurching backwards. “Don’t. I– I’ve been feeling this way for so long, and it… it’s been making me miserable. Ruining my life. I see you every day and I know I can’t have you, but all I fucking feel is love love love and it’s driven me insane.”
He ran his hands through those wet curls and pressed his hands to his scalp, somehow still fighting tears. Davey cried often; it was remarkable how well he was holding himself together because Jack was closer to crying than he was. There was no way Davey was in love with him. He could scarcely believe it– until he began to actually think about it, examining the signs and realizing all of the little details he’d missed.
Since they were seventeen, Davey had always had a particular soft spot for him, hadn’t he? Suddenly memories were flooding Jack’s mind. The private smiles Davey saved just for him, the way he looked at him with those owlish green eyes, the compositions he wrote just for Jack. The way he’d refused to be Jack’s best man and sequestered himself behind the piano all evening. The inexplicable tightness of his smile when he met Jack’s son for the first time. The awkward tension that never seemed to relax from his body when he found himself in Jack and Katherine’s home. The moments of sorrow when no one was looking, every single fucking time Jack caught him staring– oh, God. Davey had been feeling like this for years and Jack hadn’t noticed once.
His own throat was feeling tight with dismay as why why why ran through his mind.
He’d known about Davey’s homosexuality since they were eighteen or nineteen and Dave drunkenly confessed to kissing a boy. Jack had never cared about who he loved– Davey was his best friend and Jack knew plenty of other homosexuals. But Davey– Davey should’ve been in love with someone better.
Someone that could love him back, someone without a family of their own.
Jesus. That explained Paris, too. Davey had been bottling this up for six years. Of course he was finally snapping and running away. Lined right up with the announcement of Kath’s second pregnancy. Oh, this was bad. Jack was driving him away.
“Davey–” Desperate to comfort, he reached out his hand. Davey flinched away. “Dave, c’mon, I ain’t mad at’cha.”
“I– I’m glad about that but I just–” he turned to face the rainstorm and a bolt of lightning crashed across the sky, illuminating the picturesque lawn, bathed in darkness and soaked through and through. “I… I know you could never really love me back, but there was always part of me that hoped that maybe– it’s stupid. I’m looking at you now and all I see is pity.”
“I do love ya’.” Jack insisted, feeling his own voice warbling with unshed emotion.
Davey’s bottom lip trembled and Jack felt like his heart was being shattered. He wanted to return Davey’s affections. To give him everything he’d ever wanted. To wipe the slow-rolling tears away. He couldn’t give him any of that. “Not like I want you to.”
And if that wasn’t a painful truth… Jack sucked in a breath. “Nah… but I still– I care so much–”
“I know you do, Jackie, that’s– that’s part of the problem.” He hiccuped a watery laugh and dragged his damp sleeves over his eyes, only making his face wetter. “Sometimes it feels like you’re st-stringing me along with all of your flirting and touching.”
“Oh, God. I never– shit, Dave, I really never meant for you to feel like that. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Jack was itching to do something. Hug him or just place a hand on his shoulder, Jack didn’t care. His fingers were burning with it.
Davey offered him a sad little smile and shook his head. “Not your fault. They’re my stupid feelings, anyways.”
“Not– not stupid. Y’can’t help it, man.” Jack swallowed around the lump in his throat as the air thickened with awkwardness. “I just– I wish you’d’ve told me sooner before ya’ decided to just run away from me.”
“I’m not running.” He insisted firmly, though Jack privately disagreed despite the force of his friend’s conviction. “I’m just putting a bit of distance between us for both of our sakes. I’ll write you letters and focus on my music and by the time I return, I won’t be in love with you at all and I’ll be everything you need me to be. Best friend, godfather, uncle– I’ll do it all perfectly and we won’t ever have problems again.”
Jack, once notorious for running without the notion of ever settling, was feeling pity. It hurt, sweltering with all of the other emotions within him. “That ain’t healthy, Dave. You oughta deal with it here.”
“I’ve tried dealing with it, Jackie. Six years. I’ve been in love with you for six years. That’s more than half a decade. It– it’s not fair for you to ask me to stay and wallow in it.”
Like always, he had a point. Unable to stand still a moment longer, Jack turned on his heel and paced the length of the porch. His mind was racing with incoherent thoughts, a jumble of panic and sadness and pity. If he’d have just known sooner, if someone would’ve told him, if Davey wasn’t going to Paris… and when he turned around, Davey was right there waiting, hands in his pockets. Jesus. Davey was in love with him and he was moving to another continent.
“Am I… am I gonna see you again? ‘Fore you go.”
“Sure. I’ll have a little get together so we can all swap stories and have a drink before I set off.” He stared at his feet, at the black boots he so enjoyed to wear. Said they made pressing down on piano pedals easier. Fuck. Jack was going to miss his strange Davey-isms. “You and Kathy and the guys. My siblings.”
He sounded hollow. Defeated. Jack felt sick.
“We’ll make time.”
All he earned was a little smile. Davey’s eyes raked over him– hair to shoes– like he was committing the image of Jack to memory. Jack wondered if he was really ever going to come back from Paris, what with all of the raw hurt in those eyes, posture bent like he’d just been stabbed. What if he never came back? What if this was the last time he’d ever see Davey alone? “Well, guess I’d better–”
Without thinking, Jack lurched forward and tugged him into a tight embrace. Dave made a squeak of a soft sound, but he hugged him back after just a moment of hesitation. It was damp and cold and an awful hug– Jack’s cheek was frigid just from the contact with Davey’s shoulder– but he held tightly because this amazing, intelligent person was leaving his life and it was partially his fault. He’d been oblivious and he’d been a bad friend for not questioning the sadness he knew was there; for brushing it off as a part of Davey that wouldn’t go away. Even if he didn’t want to believe it, this was partially his fault. He really didn’t want Davey to go. He didn’t want to watch another loved one slip through his fingers, and he hugged the man like that might convince him to stay. Like maybe if he gripped Davey’s coat hard enough, he’d pull back and ask to go sit by the fire and warm up. They’d talk about Paris and Jack would talk and talk and talk until he’d convince Dave to just fall out of love with him and stay around, normal like things had been before.
But their normal obviously was never as good for Dave as it was for Jack, and that hurt too. It hurt when Davey sobbed quietly and it hurt because Jack was sobbing, too.
Davey was leaving. No question about it. No embrace could stop that.
And the embrace didn’t stop it. When Davey finally pulled away, minutes or hours later, he smiled a small, broken little smile. “Well. I’d best be off now.”
“Be safe.” Jack whispered, voice breaking.
And Davey nodded. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets and made his way down the stairs, walking right into the unforgiving embrace of the storm. Climbed onto that horse and snapped the reins with vigor, disappearing into the night without leaving a trace behind.
Gone. Probably never coming back, despite his promises.
Jack retched. He threw up off the side of the porch and gripped the wood like a lifeline as the grief hit him in full force. Davey was leaving. Just like his parents had, just like everyone seemed to do eventually. Somehow Davey had gone and fallen in love with him, and Jack wanted to hate him for it. He wanted to throttle him for not choosing someone else. Wanted to throttle him for not saying something before Kath got pregnant, before the whirlwind of a wedding, before Pulitzer practically banished them to this stupid, too-big house in the too-empty countryside.
Davey hadn’t even truly left yet. Hadn’t climbed onto a ship with his belongings stuffed into a suitcase. Still, Jack felt the loss. He figured he was going to feel it forever.

javey. dave is performing with an orchestra and has like 3 massive solos, jacks come to support bc why wouldn't he come watch his crush best friend perform the performance of his LIFE.
the performance goes REALLY well, davey absolutely eats it up, and finds jack after the concert and they walk home tgt to their shared dorm. along the walk, davey complains and complains how hot his concert blacks are and then as soon as their dorm door closes, the tie and the shirt and the shoes all come off at once. davey is a master at taking clothes off fast, and now all he's in are a pair of pants fitted very nicely around the waist.
jack falls over dave goes jack what happened are you feeling lightheaded, jack tries to remain suave as this Hot Ass Man is helping him up and rubbing his back consolingly .... then they kiss or whatever

-Javey anon
I’ve been…Throwing up. But Crutch has been with me all day so it hasn’t been all to bad.
I’ve been helping around the lodge, I got here late so I didn’t really get to sell many papers. My ma’s fault, she started yelling at me again. Les snuck out though, ain’t that right. You sold more papers than me.
I did! I think that just means I’m…Better!
Spot and Race have been…Cuddling? I think? They say it’s for warmth and their planning a super secret plan’ but I just hear giggling and whispering coming from their bed
I’ve been okay! Watching Jack suffer hasn’t been the best but…I’m glad to help! Even though he’s sick we’ve been joking around. It’s nice to have a day with him
I sold tons of papers today. I hit up the retirement home for the first time in a while. A long walk but it’s worth it!

oh oh you put out new prompts! May I humbly suggest “Come here, let me hold you.” for Javey (specifically livesies)?
"Come here, let me hold you." || the prompts sorry for the late response! i was super busy this week </3 cw: violence & blood!
"Mama's gonna kill me." David said and looked down at his shaking hands. "She's gonna kill me. Pa's gonna kill me. Sarah's gonna be so upset. I was supposed to protect him, Jack. I'm supposed to keep him safe."
"Dave, ya did keep him safe-"
He looked at the stains on his shirt and looked up at Jack with wide eyes. His hands continued to shake violently as he helplessly wiped at his undershirt. "I got- I got blood on my shirt. It's gonna stain, Mama isn't gonna know how to get a blood stain out of my shirt-"
"Dave. It'll wash right off. Stop worrying about stupid stuff. Are you-"
"I could've killed him, Jack. He was sputtering underneath me and I thought he was gonna die, and I didn't stop. I would've killed him," David's voice was caught in his throat. "I think I might throw up."
Jack sighed and sat across from the boy. "You ain't gonna throw up, Davey. It's gonna be alright. You know we wouldn't let you kill anyone. Ya family need's ya too much for us to let you get locked up."
David held his shaking, raw, bloody fists up to his chest. "I was supposed to keep him safe."
"Les is okay, David. He was downstairs playing pirates with the other boys just a couple of minutes ago. You did good, Dave. Ya kept him safe," Jack said.
"It wouldn't have happened if I had just sold with him like he had asked me too."
Jack sighed again, deeply. He waved the other boy over. "Come here, let me hold you." David got up, his entire body continued to shake as he fell into Jack's arms.
"Look," Jack said as he took David's hands into his own. "Ya hand's all dirty, all bloody." He spit into his shirt—which made David wince—and wiped at the other boy's knuckles. The blood came off and stained his white shirt. "But underneath it's still all nice and clean. Ya know why? Cuz ya ain't dirty, or mean, or cruel. You've got good intentions. Any one of us woulda reacted the same way if we had gotten to the guy first."
David took a deep, shaky, breath and nodded his head. "Can you walk us home? You can stay the night, so you don't have to walk back so late."
"I'd walk anywhere for ya, Dave. Ya know that."

Through Your Window
Pairing: Javey (Jack Kelly/Davey Jacobs)
Fandom: Newsies (2017) Broadway
Au: Modern Era
Word Count: 1026
Davey hummed to himself, flipping through the pages of the book sat in his lap. In all honesty, while he typically loved reading to himself, right now it was such a drag. He wanted to hang with the other newsies, but he was stuck alone in his room. He drummed his fingers against the spine, puffing his lips in boredom.
"Aye! Whats a handsome boy like you doin alone on a Saturday night?"
Davey jumped, yelping as he jolted up out of his seat, rushing towards the window where the noise came from where he met the gaze of noneother than Jack Kelly. He gasped, a ratted giggle escaping him, "Jackie?!" he exclaimed.
Jack clicked his tounge, gripping tight onto the edge of the window. "Nah, its ya landlord," he sneered sarcastically, grinning ear to ear. "Hey Davey," he smiles, waving at him with his free hand.
Davey stammered, shaking his head in disbelief as a giddy smile crept onto his face. "What on earth are you doing here?"
Jack leaned against his arm, admiring the beaming smile spread across Davey's face. "What'd ya think? Here to see you, now will ya let me in?"
Davey intertwined his fingers with Jack's,tugging him inside his room before swiftly shutting his window. "Do you realize my entire family is home and don't know you're here?" he reminds him lightly.
Jack threw his hands up in disbelief, "Fine, you want me to leave Dave?" he began with a smirk.
Davey frantically shook his head rushing towards the window to block Jack's entrance, "No No No No!" he blurted out, "Of course I'm happy to see you Jack. But I'm not out to my parents, or Les for that matter. I don't think he knows what being gay is." The omly people Davey was out to were Jack and Sarah.
Jack chuckled softly, plopping down onto Davey's bed,"We've been friends since I met ya and you boldly stood up to Weasal, " he comments,"me being here doesn't have to be seen as strictly romantic. "
Davey flopped down next to jack, tracing circles on the blanket. "I know that of course," he began, "but if you're here just the two of us I'm gonna want," his words trailed off as usual, he wasn't very good at this. "I'm just sayin I don't want to get us caught."
Jack felt a smirk tug on the corners of his lips, "Who said anything 'bout gettin caught?" he snickered, "come on, I escaped the god damn refuge, I can be sneaky in my boyfriend's room."
Davey's breath hitched, he still couldn't believe Jack considered him his boyfriend. Just hearing it was enough to make his heart skip a beat, pounding against his chest, sending a thunder in his ears.
"Ah, theres that smile Dave," Jack snickered, watching Davey smile like an idiot upon calling him his boyfriend. He bit his lip, tilting his head. "Ya still didn't answer my question, what the hell are you doin alone on a Saturday night?"
Davey rolled his eyes, picking up the book that he had tossed aside the minute he recognized Jack, "Readin" he replies simply with a shrug.
Jack laughed under his breath, "You never fail to be the brains of the group, Dave," he expressed. "But seriously? Yous inside, nose in some pages?"
Davey sighed, "What else am I gonna do Jack? I help out alot around here yknow? I can't just go out as much as I please," he huffs."Trust me, I wanted to see you, " he admits, blush rising to the apples ot his cheeks.
Jack's gaze trailed down to the other boy's lips before he quickly glanced back up to his eyes."Well good thing I know how to climb up to windows huh?" he cooed, scooting himself closer.
Davey gently caressed Jack's jaw before tilting his head up ever so slightly,"Good thing indeed," he hummed in agreement. He held his gaze there for a moment, staring into Jack's eyes, which glistened in his room's light.
Jack suddenly surged forward, pressing his lips against Davey's and pulling him into a kiss, to which Davey clumsily responded. Jack's arms winded around Dave's neck, and davey hummed into the kiss.
Suddenly, Davey pulled away, gasping for air. He panted, wiping a trial of spit from his lips. "You never fail to impress me with your boldness, Jack Kelly."
Jack's arms remained drapped around Davey's neck, though they now rested on his shoulders. "Hey what can I say, thats kinda my thing."
Davey glanced towards the ground, face tinted a light pink color. "I know, you were our leader. Thats honestly when I fell for you," he admitted, "When you stepped up to protect all the other boys."
Jack ruffled the other's hair,"Awh Dave had a little crush on me, " he cooed triumphantly. And suddenly Jack was gently slapped in his face.
"Shut upppp," Davey snorted, the blush on his face darkening even further. "Obviously I did, how could I not? I don't understand how you didn't know, I was embarrassingly obvious."
Jack rolled his eyes, shaking his head,"I was trying to force a relationship with Katherine, remember?"
Of course Davey remembered, how could he forget? He had seen Jack kiss Katherine and for the remainder of the night his head felt dizzy and he had been choking back the lump in his throat. Eventually he'd cried at home, which is when Sarah practically forced him to come out to her.
However, to both Jacobs' twins relief, Jack and Katherine quickly realized the sparks between them were practically nonexistent. Which led them to today, Davey still mesmorized by the fact Jack liked him back.
"Im sorry it took me so long to notice you, Davey," Jack mumbled, sending him a tender smile. "I love ya."
"I love you too, Jackie."
And so maybe Davey let Jack stay longer than he probably should, and maybe Sarah had to come in to tell them to be quiet and be careful so they wouldn't get caught. But Dave didn't mind, he just wanted to be in Jack's company.

gimme ur javey headcanons or i’ll make your kneecaps into soup <333
-🦡
do it you wont-
jk anyways
uuhhhh, so werid thing but not bc there the same people (kinda) I mostly ship Javid bc 1992sies is my life rn, and ONES JUST AN ARTIST AND THE OTHER IS A COWBOY
so if everything seems weird or anything, stab me
1992sies-
David finds Jack extra cute with his cowboy hat on
Their first kiss happened on David's fire escape while Jack was walking him home
Sarah saw it happen while she was looking for David to see if he was close to home
Sarah is so happy for them and gossip to Blink and Spot about this they lowkey girlboss and have tea parties
David is a blushing mess when coming in and Sarah smiles at him
Les asked if David was alright and all David could do was blush harder
When they have birthdays Jack always gets David a book or a new shirt (BECAUSE THIS BITCH WILL SAVE EVERY PENNY)
David would get him more dime novels and even a well-illustrated poster of cowboys (Sarah and Les chipped in even if David didn't want them too)
On a snowy day in New York everyone is playing but David is there looking at each Newsie UNTIL JACK CHUCKS A SNOWBALL AT DAVID and they have a snowball fight
Tumbler looks to Skittery and says " Skits, mom and dad are fighting again"
It's now like a playful civil war, UNTIL SPOT COLON COMES IN AND HELPS RACE WHO IS ON DAVIDS SIDE, JACK TEAM DIES
Jack learns about Hanukkah and ask questions
David's mom and Sarah all make the Newsies quilts each with something resembling the newsie its given too
All the newsies try to find something for them, they all pitch in to get Sarah and Ester a new dress, Myer a new razor, and Les a stuffed dog
Jack and David stay up all night talking while the windows open, either in the lodge or at David's house
On thanksgiving the whole Jacobs family makes a meal for all them AND the Newsies
David sometimes has to stay at home while his parents take Les to see their grandparents so he invites Jack over while Sarah goes spend time with Katherine
If his parents are out more than 1 day Sarah and him each get a day for the house all to themselves with their partners
OK NOW FOR JAVEY BC IDK WHAT IM DOING
Jack ofc draws Davey all the time
He even drew the whole family once
Sometimes they skip an hour or two to walk in the park
Once Jack dared Davey to climb a tree and he did,,,but he fell after word
Jack wouldn't stop apologizing Davey just kissed him to shut him up
Jack would invite Davey to see Medda and drink tea with her
Davey would discuss different scenes that Jack could paint while at this
They first kissed up on Jacks penthouse
Crutchie walked/climbed in on them the first time and called to Race who owed him a quarter because he was right to bet that Davey would kiss first
Jack found out how to make flower crowns
Davey was taught by Sarah how to press them in a notebook
He looks at said notebook when he misses Jack (mostly at night when he can't sleep)
Davey tries to teach Jack how to dance
He fails a lot but at least he can dip Davey and kiss him
He also tries to teach Jack how to read better
Well he dose to most of the Newsies but like Albert and Elmer they need extra time to learn
Jack has many issues so dose Davey so they both help each other
And they have new ways to help each other all the time

Yessss ofc!!
Ummm here are some rapid fire javey headcannons because I literally just woke up lol
- Davey’s favorite color is red and Jack’s is blue (jacks bandana, davey’s eyes)
- the other newsies all relentlessly make fun of Jack and Davey because of how much they’re together, how couple-y they are, etc.
- Jack is obsessed with Davey’s eyes. Because gay.
- Davey adores Jack’s accent
- If they were a song, they would be the hozier cover of “do I wanna know?” By arctic monkeys. Specifically the hozier cover.
- Jack is always holding Davey’s hand at all times. He like the security and safety that comes with holding his hand.
- Davey likes to mess with Jack’s hair
- Davey feels like he has known Jack for his entire life. Like, when he met him, he felt like he met a missing piece of himself
- They had met one time when they were both younger. Davey was stealing food, he wasn’t good at it, but he was trying because his baby brother was hungry. He ran into Jack (when he was still Francis) and Jack walked him home. (This is a little plot point in one of my fanfics)
- When Jack scabbed, Davey was so hurt but he couldn’t bring himself to hate him. He knew that there must have been something that happened to Jack to make him scab, but he pushed away that thought because the idea of Jack being hurt was too much for him. He would rather Jack hurt him than have anything hurt Jack.
- The reason Jack stayed in New York was because of the look Davey gave him when he was about to leave.
That’s all I’ve got for now!!! Thanks for letting me yap🤪
(asks you about javey)
OKAY SOOOOOOO—
The way I see them is like, they met and they instantly clicked. They immediately became friends (and more).
I also think that Davey fell first, but Jack fell INFINITELY HARDER. Like, Jack is so so in love with him that it’s sickeningly obvious. Davey is constantly shocked by how much Jack loves him and it makes his heart swell.
When they first meet, Davey is a little bit skeptical and untrusting of Jack. Within hours, Jack gains his trust and they click.
I think that Jack would have a hard time actually opening up to Davey because of his past, but once he got comfortable, he just spilled his guts to him. Everything that he’d been through just came out and Davey listened intently to everything.
Jack would also listen to Davey talk about his struggles with things like money, family stuff, anxiety, etc. Jack knows that Davey doesn’t have it as bad as him, but he doesn’t ever bring that up. He just listens.
Thank you for letting me yap

hello/goodbye hugs that linger for javey 💙
Number 18 comin right up!
edit: oops, this got away from me because I don't know the definition of concise apparently
******
"It's just another three weeks, and then I'm home for the entire summer," Davey assures.
"It's too long," Jack whines. "I hate Yale. I hate stupid Boston and their stupid red-sox and their stupid Ivy League schools that have ya away for nine months of the year."
As much as Davey wants to pretend that Jack being all sorts of clingy is a major inconvenience, he can't dismiss the fact that he loves the way Jack always refuses to release them from their final hugs before Davey heads back to school.
It's become a tradition of sorts. They hug goodbye, and Davey makes some comment about being late for his train, and Jack tightens his grip while Davey rolls his eyes and lets his arms go limp at his side.
There's something different this time around, though, and Davey can't quite put his finger on it. The soft, ragged breath Jack takes when he buries his face into the crook of Davey's neck. The way his smile isn't entirely reaching his eyes.
"Hey," Davey's hands settle on Jack's shoulders as he puts enough space between them to get a good look at his best friend. "You okay?"
"Yeah," Jack mutters. Davey can tell by the dimness of his eyes that he's lying. " 'm'fine."
"You don't seem fine."
"I guess," Jack sighs, "In the past year, with you bein' gone and all... I didn't realize how much I was gonna miss ya. I didn't realize a lot of things."
Before Davey can even open his mouth to reply, he's being hauled in again for another bone-crushing hug. Davey's arms dangle by his side in shock as Jack's come up behind his back, gripping the back of Davey's shirt with such force.
Davey blinks himself out of his stupor and slowly brings his arms to clasp around Jack's waist.
"I love you, Dave."
"Love you, too, Jackie."
Davey's on the train, his mind running through their last encounter the way a needle runs over vinyl, when his phone buzzes.
Jackie: i need to tell you something. Jackie: shoulda said it before you left Jackie: i mean, i said it, but i didn't really SAY it ykwim?? Jackie: fuck. i hope you don't have signal rn and we can just wait til u get back for summer
Me: Bad news Me: I have signal
Jackie: well shit
Me: You were saying?
The three dots indicating someone on the other side is texting pop up. They disappear for a moment and return, sending anxiety that rises like the tide shooting through Davey's veins. This is where Jack admits what's been bothering him. This is where Jack says they've grown apart, that keeping up with Davey when he's so far away isn't worth the effort, that their friendship of nearly six years isn't worth the effo--
Jackie: I love you.
Davey squints at the screen.
All that fuss for Jack to tell Davey something he already knows?
Me: That's nice, Jackie. I love you, too!
Jackie: ffs Jackie: you go to an ivy league school Jackie: ain't no way ur really this dense
Me: ??? uncalled for??
Jackie: Dave. Jackie: I'm IN LOVE with you.
Oh. Well. Davey certainly wasn't expecting that.
Jackie: and i feel stupid sayin that over a damn text message but i was too scared to say it earlier and i feel like it'll eat me alive if i don't say anything Jackie: if you don't feel the same i TOTALLY understand btw Jackie: we can also just. pretend this never happened when you come back and it'll be just like old times
He blinks dumbly at the phone, heart hammering in his chest as more frantic messages come in.
Jackie: OR you could continue to ignore me Jackie: you have your read receipts on, you know that?
Jackie: oh my god i'm gonna block you. Jackie: hi hey hello, davey jacobs? jack kelly here, your best friend who just confessed his love for you? yeah it'd be great if you could SAY SOMETHING
Me: That certainly was a sentence.
Jackie: I hate you.
Me: Pretty sure you love me. Source: you.
Jackie: no fr how am *i* the one who gets a rep for being annoying?
Jackie: really though. are we gonna talk about this?
Me: Look who's being dense now.
Jackie: DAVE
Davey laughs at his screen and decides to put Jack out of his misery, chest feeling like it's exploding into a million stars.
Me: JACK Me: Good news. Me: I love you, too.
Jackie: see, was that so hard? Jackie: holy shit, so... Jackie: we're like. properly in love huh? Jackie: whaddya wanna do about that?
Me: We could call when I get back to my dorm? Have a real conversation about it? Me: And maybe talk about it when I get home in May?
Jackie: yeah. i like the sound of both those things
When Davey comes home for summer break, Jack runs to him as soon as he steps off the train, arms so tight around his torso and heart so full that Davey can't imagine either of them ever letting go.

📂 JAVEY
jack’s the one who remembers everything. he treasures good times so much, it’s impossible for him not to. he remembers every date they’ve ever been on, where it was, what davey ate and whether he liked it, what time it was when he walked davey back to his apartment and left him at the fire escape.
he remembers littler things too, like if davey mentions having a song stuck in his head or that he’s looking for a book, jack’ll remember and keep it tucked in his head until he can find it for davey. davey’s usually totally forgotten about it when jack gets back to him, but it comes back in a wave of delight when jack recounts all the specific details of davey mentioning it - including exactly how davey described what he couldn’t remember.
ask jack anything else, though - ranging from what he ate yesterday to what he and race were just talking about - and you’re out of luck.
(also, in modern au, this absolutely translates to davey being the one coming home from class or work to jack getting ready in the bathroom, already dressed, shaving his stubble.
“‘ey, you’re late. we got that dinner with sarah and kath, remember?”
“we’ve got that what? god dammit.”
“shower quick. boiler’s already warmed up.”
davey tosses his bag to the floor and starts climbing into the shower while still actively undressing. when they finally get to the restaurant, only slightly late, katherine’s already ordered their food because jack remembered davey’s favourite at this particular place and texted her to put their orders in.)
send me a 📂 + a newsies character/ship for a random useless headcanon <3

Approval (Javey drabble)
I took inspiration for this from Heartstopper by Alice Oseman, I think the panel was in book 3? I can’t remember :/
“Davey! You know what tomorrow is?” Jack took both of his boyfriend’s hands and leaned close to him, his lips not even an inch from Davey’s ear.
“Our anniversary.” Davey blushed. “We’ve been together for an entire year, Jackie.” He cupped Jack’s face in his hands, stroking a pair of fingers down the shorter male’s head. Davey’s own face reddened as he took in all of Jack’s features; his deep brown eyes, his soft skin and very slight stubble (newly grown, Jack didn’t like it, but Davey thought it made him look cute).
“How should we celebrate?” Jack scooped Davey up and spun him around, setting him down again.
Davey smiled brightly. “I dunno! What did you have in mind?” He leaned up against Jack and kissed him gently. “Anything special?”
“I was thinking I’d take you out for dinner, then we could watch the stars up on the rooftop.” Jack admitted, his face flushing. Davey beamed and placed a kiss on Jack’s forehead. “That sounds amazing, Jackie. I don’t deserve you…”
Jack frowned and pulled Davey in for a kiss. “You deserve all the love I have to give.” He assured him, “You’re perfect.”
Davey chuckled. “Oh. Thanks, Jackie.” He seemed to brighten up a bit. Jack put an arm around him and kissed his cheek. “Anything for you, honey. And I hate to break it to ya, but it’s getting late. My place?”
He hesitated. “I’ll call my mum. You know she thinks we’re…too close for comfort.”
“I know.” Jack breathed. “But we’re 18, now. We can make our own choices, and I want to be with you. Tell her we’ll stay in seperate rooms tonight.”
“We never stay in seperate rooms.” Davey raised an eyebrow.
“I never said that would be the truth.” Jack smirked. “C’mon, Davey, you know we’re allowed to cuddle and stuff at my place!”
“Yeah, yeah, I know.” He giggled as he pulled out his phone, went into his contacts, and called his mother.
She picked up immediatly. “Hello, sweetie! You on your way home?”
He sighed. “Well, actually, I’m gonna spend the night at Jack’s. Is that okay?”
Davey could practically see his mother’s smile droop over the phone. “Oh.”
“That’s okay, then?” He asked pleadingly.
She went from being upset and surprised to sounding angry. “David! Your life can’t just be taken over by that boyfriend of yours! I don’t care if you’re gay, but you can’t just spend all your time with him. I see the way you look at him. I hear the things you say to him. You’re too young to be sleeping with him.”
“Mom! I’m a legal adult. And besides, we’re not…we never…we don’t…I’ll sleep in the guest room, okay?!”
She sighed audibly. “Fine! Fine! Go ahead!” She hung up, exasperated. Davey sighed and turned to Jack.
“So can you come?” Jack asked, concerned when he saw the look on his boyfriend’s face.
“Jack.” Davey grasped onto Jack’s shoulders. “My mom thinks we’re…y’know…”
Jack’s face went red. “No! Did you tell her?”
“I don’t think she believes me.” He leaned into Jack.
Jack took Davey’s hand. “Come on, baby. Let’s just get home, then we can talk about it.”
They stepped through the door, were greeted by Jack’s guardian, Medda, then went upstairs to Jack’s bedroom. Jack pulled Davey down onto the bed, smothering his face in kisses. When Davey didn’t perk up, Jack pulled him in for a tight hug, then met his eyes.
“Are you going to be in trouble?” He whispered.
“I don’t know.” Davey snapped. “Probably. My mother’s convinced we’ve done more than just cuddle and stuff at these sleepovers. I’m sorry, Jack, I just—”
“You don’t need to apologize, Davey. She’s your mom. Moms do these things, I guess.” He pulled Davey down onto his back. “Tomorrow morning, we’ll go talk to her.”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Davey whispered back. “Are you sure you want to come?”
”You’re my boyfriend, Davey.” Jack laughed. “I need to be sure you’re comfortable, and if it means having me there with you, I’ll go.”
”Thanks, Jackie.” Davey closed his eyes and rested his weary head on his boyfriend’s shoulder. Jack pulled the blankets up around the both of them.
“I love you, Davey.”
”I love you too, Jack.”
The next morning, Davey awoke to the pleasant sound of Jack whispering into his ear. Little things. ‘I love you’ and ‘you’re amazing’ and ‘my little boy’, stuff that Jack knew his boyfriend loved to hear.
Davey’s stomach churned at the thought of what he was meant to do today. He shook himself awake, curled up in Jack’s arms.
”Happy anniversary, baby!” Jack cheered, pulling his Davey in for a long, soft kiss.
Davey pulled away. “Thanks, Jackie. Are we still gonna…?”
”Talk to your mom? Yeah. Call her.”
He pulled out his phone, tapping into his ‘recent callers’ list.
It rang for a few seconds before she picked up. “David.” She simply said. “Do you need a ride home?”
”No thanks. I—we—uhm, wanted to talk to you.”
”We?”
”Me and Jack.” He said, his voice trembling.
“You and…him.”
Jack took hold of the phone. “Hi, Mrs. Jacobs.”
”Hello, Jack.”
Jack gulped. Davey could tell he was a little nervous.
“I just wanted to…thank you, for approving of my relationship with your son. I really love him. I would die for him. I’m grateful I met him, and that he had feelings for me, just like I did, and still do for him.”
Either Davey was crazy, or he could hear his mother’s voice sound just a bit more happy. “I’m…happy to hear that.”Jack continued. “And I wanted to assure you that he and I are completely safe when we’re together. I would never do anything to him without his consent, and my guardian is always here to make sure we’re safe.”
”That’s quite the relief!” She laughed, actually laughed. Had it been she was really just worried about her son’s safety, that she wasn’t trying to keep him from Jack?
“One more thing,” Jack added, “I really, really do love him. So uhm…thanks for letting him come today. You’re a good mom, right Davey?”
Davey grinned and nodded. “The best mom. I love you.”
His mother’s voice turned loving and soft. “Thank you, David. I love you too, sweetie, and I’m so proud you’ve found someone you can be so safe and happy with. Have fun, baby. Happy anniversary.”
She hung up. Davey tackled Jack in a hug and kissed the tip of his nose. “She remembered our special day.”
Jack wrapped his arms around Davey. “Every bit of what I said back there was true. I love you more than I think you realize.”
Davey pressed a kiss to Jack’s lips. “I love you too, Jackie. I love you too.”
