“what’s on your mind?” nothing, i just can’t stop thinking about how integral music and the past are to the guardians of the galaxy movies, and it’ll not just that music is played throughout but it’s all OLD music because, yanno, the past and how all three movies start with just that: music and the past; the first movie opens with quill’s sad backstory and 1975’s ‘i’m not in love’ by 10cc, and the second movie opens with young happy meredith (who’s about to be very sad and sick) and 1972’s ‘brandy’ by looking glass and the third movie opens with rocket’s sad backstory and 1992’s ‘creep’ by radiohead, and the further we journey with them in the trilogy the more recently the music has been released until we’ve kinda reached our time, so it’s like the past has caught up with them, and that’s when everyone finally stops running from their past and they have to, get this, “face the music” and quill gives up his zune and gives it to rocket and goes back to earth to reconnect with the grandpa, the one part of his past that he’s ignored for like 40 years

In 1986 Missouri, 10 year old Peter meets four lost aliens, Gamora, nebula, rocket and Groot. believing it to be just like the plot of e.t., Peter allows them to hide in his house until they can find a way to contact their home, little does he know though, that returning to where they come from is the last thing any of his new friends want. Peter’s grandfather. Pete crush on Gamora. Has a bit of lilo and stitch. Peter quill’s Walkman . Family members start to notice that the character's spending a lot of time in their room, acting rather snippy about people going in there, stashing food, and apparently talking to themselves.(and aprently trees and raccoons) the Walkman was from Peter’s mother. Yondu and Kraglin are at first hired to find and bring back rocket and groot, while Thanos sends his goons to retrieve his “daughters” Lilo and stitch came in 2001. Peter’s element guns. Becoming concerned about Peter’s new habits, his grandfather decides to have Peter talk to a child therapist, who believes Peter made up his new “friends” as a way to cope with the loss of his mother. After discovering the kid’s friendship, as the true nature of the high evolutionary, yondu and kraglin decide to help Peter and his alien friends rather than capture them. Yondu and Kraglin find themselves unexpectedly attached to the unlikely group, especially after witnessing the camaraderie and loyalty the young boy shares with his extraterrestrial companions.

As Peter's bond with the aliens deepens, he starts to learn more about their pasts and the reasons why none of them want to return to their original worlds. Gamora and Nebula confide in him about their struggles with Thanos, sharing the emotional toll of their upbringing. Meanwhile, Rocket and Groot reveal their desire for freedom and adventure, away from the High Evolutionary's grasp.

Peter’s grandfather, still concerned but also intrigued by his grandson's resilience and happiness, starts joining him in his room. Although skeptical at first, he begins to notice unexplainable phenomena – moving shadows in the corner of his eye, small objects being misplaced, and strange sounds echoing through the house. These small clues eventually lead him to believe in the existence of Peter's friends, making him determined to protect his grandson and his new family from the looming threats.

In an ultimate showdown, Peter’s loyalty and courage inspire his alien friends to face their fears and fight back against their pursuers. Yondu and Kraglin, now fully on their side, work out a plan to thwart both Thanos’s goons and the High Evolutionary, using Peter’s resourcefulness and his element guns.

In the process, Peter realizes the depth of his feelings for Gamora, and while it's just an innocent crush, it solidifies the bond among them all. With their adversaries thwarted for the time being, Peter's home becomes a sanctuary where every member feels valued and accepted, laying the groundwork for their collective journey through the stars.

The unexpected blend of beings from different worlds helps Peter cope with his mother's loss, transforming his grief into strength, and he decides to keep his mother's memory alive by playing her favorite songs on his Walkman whenever they head out on a new adventure. Together, Peter and his newfound family embark on a cosmic journey that will forever shape their destinies.

I wonder if there's any songs the guardians can't listen to, or just skip when they play on shuffle. Peter can't listen to Brandy because it just reminds him of his mother and of Ego. Maybe whenever he 'returns' his grandpa could have it playing on a record, and Peter just asks to turn it off, prompting an awkward conversation.

On a more humorous note Rocket can't listen to Crazy on You, especially around windows, without getting nervous. I'm imagining a scene where it comes on and Adam just appears behind him and sighs and says "This was playing the first time we met." And Rocket just waits a second and says "You crashed through a window and almost killed me with your flashy lazer hands but yeah, get nostalgic about it."

i can absolutely imagine rocket staring up at adam with his most deadpan expression like are you shitting me right now and adam being completely clueless, just a small little wistful smile on his golden face. i suspect that adam sometimes calls rocket dad and rocket is like.... absolutely not.

pete's all well grampa i met my dad and. i mean you probably guessed he wasn't a great guy since he took off on mom and all. but whatever you're imagining, it was worse. and he, uh-

grampa probably says something like no need to say more, pete. i've hated that guy since the first time your mom mentioned him. seemed like a real piece of work. he takes the record off the player and offers it to pete. do you want to break it?

maybe they do break it, or maybe they don't. either way, catharsis is had, and pete is relieved, and the record is never played again. pete picks out something new, and the two of them sit and bitch - rightfully - about ego, and pete talks about how he's pretty sure all his friends except groot and maybe drax have had terrible dads -

and at some point, between the dry laughter and the can you believe its, just under the low croon of aretha franklin and over the quiet whisper of the newspaper pages and the clink of the coffee cups on the table - pete tells his grandfather how lucky meredith had been, to have him for a father.

Nebula: Are you going to tell me not to break Peter's heart or you'll break my legs or something?

Jason: No, I know you wouldn't do it on purpose, and it's pointless to get mad at someone over a mistake. And I trust my grandson's taste in women. Heartbreak's just a natural part of relationships, Nebula. You'll both hurt each other, but everything will be fine as long as you're mature, forgiving, and loving through it all.

Jason: Now, do you want a burger or a hot dog?

Nebula, holding back a sob: ...Both, please.

3 headcanons how Peter’s grandfather immediately recognized him.

Peter resembles his daughter Meredith.

He went to Avengercon in Missouri and read about his adventures.

He knows because Peter was with the Avengers during their battle against Thanos for Earth.

Nebula comes to visit Peter on Earth and Jason can immediately tell that there are feelings between the two of them, so whenever she visits he tries to play wingman for them. He'll talk Peter up to Nebula and vice versa, and excuse himself to give them some privacy.

His wife totally joins in, too. Maybe she gives Nebula advice on how to flirt with Peter, and Nebula is just mortified because she didn't ask and that means her feelings are obvious.

When they finally do start dating, Peter's grandparents' only response is "about damn time."

combining two of my current biggest interests because i can. peter quill was absolutely a wrestling kid and he definitely bonded with his grandpa over it. he'd probably take him to local shows and they'd watch wwe every week and jason would buy access to all the pay-per-view events for them to watch together

Imagine Peter Quill’s grandfather being in a Facebook support group for people who’ve had loved ones go missing. And one day he makes a post to people he’s known over a decade, who know his story by heart, and says “a man knocked on my door today and said he was my Peter back from the stars.” Going on to explain how his grandson was abducted by aliens, formed a superhero squad, met and killed his father who was a celestial god, helped defeat Thanos, formed a community in the skull of a completely unrelated dead celestial god, abducted Kevin Bacon, and came back for a reunion. Then there’s a slideshow of pictures of Peter smiling like it’s the first day of school, caught off-guard eating breakfast at the table, posing in his SL uniform, holding hands with his grandfather, then mowing some guy’s lawn.

I’ve been wanting to mention this for awhile, but not only does Peter grow from these words in Love and Thunder but he proceeds to go back to earth to stare the man who helped rise him in the eyes. He was going to find himself because he’s felt lost for awhile.

Yondu: like you all need any fancy education, I never went to any fancy school thing, and look at me! Who wouldn’t want to be where I am now?
