It's time to reveal the sun dyed shirt! It's been 22 days since I put it in the jar.
Tumblr media
Smells like autum (decayed leaves) and look at that golden yellow! What about the red onion skins inside the shirt?
Tumblr media
Sure looks red! But red onion skins are supposed to give green dye, the red goes away when it's rinsed... right?
Tumblr media
Right!! It's completely different now! How fun!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some details! I can't quite capture the greenness of the top, it's not quite that dark in natural light.

People are misscharactering gerry and it is making me upset >:(
People are like "he wouldn't be goth anymore bc he doesn't have the trauma" and I've seen a couple of different takes that people are like gerry wouldn't dress goth or he is actually a metalhead and like No? And people don't know what makes someone goth it seems bc you have to listen to the music as the baseline and boom you can know learn about the history, dress it, and you have to understand the political stuff too(since it came from punk) and normies think that you have to have trauma? To be goth and like that's just factual incorrect. So they are making this thing that tmp gerry is a normal man now and like he can still be goth like bro just dressed that way in tma and just bc he has a support system now doesn't mean he got his goth card taken away

Attempt number 3 of pokeberry dyeing in this house. This time I used distilled water instead of tap water like the other two times. But then the dial got bumped (this keeps happening ??? Don't know how to stop it from happening) and the berries started boiling before I noticed. So, this might end up brown again just because of that.
But... this looks a lot closer to the color I got the first time I dyed with pokeberry, at the last place I lived. More salmon pink than anything else. Way too early to tell, but I'm hopeful.
In other news, I think my iron mordant might be ready for a test run soon. And the tannin bath (mostly acorn shells and caps) is looking strong. I've got another batch of acorns to put in the bath so I need to decant it and take the old stuff out, it's just a bit of a pain. Doing all my dyeing stuff on another floor sucks. But still, it's going.

Hohohoho I have put 5 mini skeins in jars with all my neon dyes in the oven 20 min ago and after another 25 min I can turn the oven off and let them cool to touchable temperature and THEN I can dye the last 5 mini skeins in all the colors I haven't tried yet because by complete coincidence I have exactly 5 colors I haven't used yet. All these colors are Jacquard acid dye colorways.
Currently dyeing: vivid violet, blacklight blue. Chartreuse, florescent orange, and florescent yellow (haven't tried this one yet. Very excited to see how it turns out)
Dyeing next: pink, teal, pumpkin, golden yellow, and fire red

pls recommend a true beginners first crochet project
I really like washcloths because they're small and you can start with a single crochet stitch and work your way from there. Cotton yarn is pretty cheap too, though it isn't stretchy. If you're struggling too much with cotton, blanket squares are another option that can use any yarn.
This tutorial has good pictures.
What I did to learn each crochet stitch was use wikihow because each step is in gif form. Videos were too fast for me and still images didn't make sense. They have guides for everything from making a chain to more complicated ways of starting a project like Magic Loop.

Part two of hibiscus dye!!! The jar on the left has some alum (to test out what that does to the fiber/dye) and the jar on the right is just dye, no mordants or fixatives.
I’m doing a method while I cobble together bits of information from different sources. Unfortunately I can’t find any true sources focusing solely on hibiscus dye, and what I can find seems to say that they get incredibly light pink colors (aka barely any pigment) or even blue green ish, rather than my yarn’s vibrant magenta, which has not been my experience at all.
So anyway, I boil my dried flowers in a pot, reduce as much as possible, and then pour the hot dye into the jar with pre-wet yarn (no mordants used). I close the jars tightly so they can boil or steam themselves however it goes, and then I take them outside! I’ve seen this called solar dye, but essentially I put them in a sunny spot and leave them there for 24 hours, overnight and all. Could probably leave them longer but I get impatient and want to see the colors hehehe.
I squeeze out as much liquid as possible, then let them drip dry in my shower with ventilation. Lol, my tub is a little bit pinkish now, I have to say, hibiscus loves to stain. Planning to let them sit for a while before washing them out, maybe with a bit of gentle Soak soap too.
So that’s my process! Apparently hibiscus takes to animal fiber incredibly easily with no mordants needed, which has also been my experience so far too. I did want to experiment a bit with a mordant anyway just to say that I had, and there is a minute difference in the color I can see in the jars, which doesn’t seem to be as deep a color as the non mordant jar. However, it was also from the second dye bath from the same batch of boiled flowers, which could be a weaker dye anyway. This is the alpaca fiber by the way! Excited for some pretty pink alpaca yarn!!!!

generally beginning to realize that most people who thirst for the jjk men are doing so incorrectly and for the wrong reasons like just making up a generic archetype of a really cool hot guy from those het smutty self published amazon novels and pretending theyre the jjk dudes. when you can say anything about gege akutami but he gave us such a diverse & fascinating cast of hot dudes who are losers in such specific and different ways but always so devastatingly that none of them get any hole whatsoever
#like gojo is this hot super strong unflappable cool guy but he only had 1 friend who tolerated him bc they were both the most insufferable#guy around and ever since he died he’s been annoying hapless teenagers who cant do anything about his obnoxious presence and thats his#whole social life.#toji is a badass action hero who also in his head has the Action Man backstory of yes i may have been a shitty deadbeat dad… but i did it…#to Protect My Family😤 but his legacy is that megumi doesn’t remember or think about his and when he does its ‘oh yea that loser’ and also#as previously mentioned his only employable skill is Can Cut Down Big Monsters; Fast and he looks like he uses dish soap on his hair#sukuna would be the closest to the idealized hot powerful guy image at least if ur a monsterfucker which i know many of us in the lgbt#community are. but he’s also an apocalyptic maneating entity who’s tied to the whims of a chaotically good teenager who would eat an entire#jar of mayo on a dare and summon him to ask for an opinion on his new hair dye.#which is both a hysterical premise that should be used more in fanart/fic for comedy AND profoundly pathetic on his part.#only exception to all this is nanami but thats bc he is textually canonically there to offset the swagless vibes of the main adult cast esp#gojo with his dignified huge dick energy.#to be clear i dont profoundly care about any of this like i think its funny im not mad about it . but as a known pathetic guy desirer i had#to say my piece#personal#jjk

I realized recently (read: today as I'm writing this) that while I associate certain specific fiber arts with Athena (knitting, weaving, dying, and spinning), I associate crochet specifically with Apollo, though Athena's there too, of course. I think it's because it's more free-flowing: I can freehand something with crochet more easily than I can with knitting, both because I've known it longer and because there are fewer Things To Learn, unlike knitting which has a million different techniques that may seem interchangeable but actually aren't and that all affect the end product in a pretty big way (looking at you decreases & bind-offs). Because I can free-hand crochet more easily, and I grew with it the same way I did with drawing, they have similar vibes. Knitting and weaving, on the other hand, have steeper learning curves imo and are way more structured- and I associate more solid (dare I say rigid) structure with Athena. Embroidery and cross-stitch are kinda in their own floating category, maybe because I do them less and therefore have weaker associations with them over-all. I associate hand-sewing largely with Hestia, though again, Athena is always also there, because I associate it with mending, altering clothing, and making home items (ex the quilted pillowcase I've been mentally turning around in my head for the last few weeks).
Interestingly, I find printmaking specifically to be associated with both Athena and Apollo. It leans into the latter's domain, of course, the same way crochet does Athena's, but the structure you need in order to layer & print properly without hurting yourself, ruining equipment, or fucking up you edition seems reminiscent of Athena. Dyeing, especially making & using natural dyes, feels very much like an Athena thing despite it 1) feeling similar to painting or using inks and 2) being a trial & error process that's honestly pretty free-flowing if you approach it a certain way (especially if you do solar dyeing, which doesn't necessarily need some of the more meticulous processes you need to boil-dye something).

Apparently I can meet my goal of roughly 400,000 words in 6 months if I just somehow write at least 2,200 words a day ghbjh... Almost 2,500 today... huzzah...
#Definitely not going to be able to stick with it just due to like... being realistic about my energy levels and etc. ESPECIALLY as we#enter the Evil Summer and it becomes hot all the time. But... one can attempt.. at least...#I'm also a very slow writer since I tend to re-read and edit while I write. and only move onto the next section once what I'm writing#seems okay. Which is easy for visual novel type stuff. since ''sections'' of a conversation are more clearly marked (like if you#have a menu option with 5 different dialogue choices. finish the character's response for choice 1 before moving onto 2. etc.)#Especially since when I'm done with a whole quest I always follow it up by playing through it and picking every option and making sure it#actually all works okay and etc. So I am already going to see it all a second time. Then I can go back and reorder a few words or remove#certain sentences that don't sound natural when I read them out loud (I always read it all outloud to myself since it is... just peple#talking.. it should sound like natural dialogue in their voice. etc). But my ''first draft'' is kind of not as first drafty since I pause t#edit a lot as I go along. So it also takes longer probably than it would take other people who I think treat a first draft as more#of a loose guideline or something. AANYWAY...#80F in my bedroom right now again... huzzah... I did end up finishing and recording that sims build video before the heat wave (or is#it really a heat wave if it's just summer..?? lol) came in.. but now... augh.. the editing... plus the costume photos and all else... Much#to do as always.. Often such a long todo list.. a giant scroll hung upon the walls of the evil hermit wizard tower..#Anyhow.. I hope I can finish getting ready for bed early in time to reward myself with a game of tripeaks solitaire whilst I snack on#cheddar cheese and some of those preserved artichokes in a jar. hrgm... I actually have nasturtiums (ultimate best flower) on the#deck again this year but I had to move them all into a corner today because the leaves were getting burnt by the sun lol.. Also am now more#cautiously weaving through social media to ignore all dragon age news. NOT bc of spoilers (I actually love spoilers/literally never play#any game until there's full guides on it I can read to plan my entire playthrough based on knowing exactly what I want to happen lol + mods#and etc.) but just because I'm so busy with my ownprojects I simply do not have the brainspace to dedicate... Yes I love to think#about elves and fictional universe lore. but no.. I pretend I do not see it. Does not exist to me actually. ghgj.. OHH also took som#cool pictures of flowers in the garden section of a store and I wanted to do like.. character designs based on the colors of the flowers o#something. but that might just be another unnecessary project to add to the pile.. I want to commit to the daunting task of dyeing my#hair again some time.. hrm.. this is all of the updates I can think of. As if a bunch of random tags make up for never posting anything for#weeks on end lol.. alas.. too warm to think properly I suppose.. .. I neeeeeed a long lost relative to leave me some million dollar#estate in their will so I can have the resources to move to a colder climate or something ..augh#.. but for now.. I shall toil away in my little wizard tower trying to write 2000 something words a day whilst sweating and such ghbj

Why is it so hard to locate written directions for jar dyeing wool?
Everything is just listing how to stove top dye and use acid dyes :/
Anyone got a step-by-step reference guide so I can fuck around?
