What was the Best Way to Handle Bullying at Work?

Recalling those days in 2023, I still wonder what was the best way to react.

Jonn, my boss, yelled at me. His instruction was always confusing. “Can you do this in that way?”

So I tried to confirm, “What is this? What is that way?” Suddenly, he pissed off, “Why you can't understand!!! Are you stupid?! You are in this industries of years and why you don't understand?!”

Other day, he said, “Can you make this graph into yellow bar chart?” I changed the graph in the system to yellow barchart. He said, “No! I said to make it red line chart!! You didn't listen to me?!”

The other day, I had a call with a client, and I wanted to confirm something with her. Suddenly, he said, “Let’s stop meeting.” He then let the client out of the virtual meeting room and started yelling at me, “You didn't read the document?! If you had read the document, you wouldn't be asking those questions!”

I told him this was improper communication, which you should not take in the office. Please respect me as a professional. He replied, “Oh, you don't know want to work with old guys?! If you can't stand this, you can't work with someone older than you!” I said, “Don’t make an excuse with a reason of something that you can't change, such as age, gender, ethnicity, etc.” He said, “It is normal here!!! Go home and never come back to the office.”

To the wisdom of Tumblr, how should I have deal in this situation? What would the professional negotiator do, if you are in my situation?

Working Japan Branch of US Company

Working in Japan for a foreign national company is challenging. The workplace bullying is very common here. In Japanese company, the labor law office comes to office. But for foreign national company, HR never willing to follow Japanese labor law.

When my coworker threatened me, I reported to HR. HR didn't do anything. Even worse, they told me to shut up. I wrote my feeling on LinkedIn that how I hurt from bullyed. HR fund out and told me I was fired. You can't do that in Japan. The company have to provide the document with reasons to fire someone. Usually, requires lawyer. Most of the time when an employee is fired due to crime.

I reported to US HQ, the answer HQ gave us was, “Hey all, be nice to each other.” Yup, that’s all what HQ can do from overseas.

I reported the labor law office. Labor law office came to my company, but HR ignored. HR said, “We are US company, you can't tell us what we do!”

What the hell?! You have an office in Japan and hire locals. You definitely have to follow Japanese labor law.

I went to see lawyer. Lawyer told me, “I can keep you stay in this company, this email saying fired without corporate sign is invalid but….do you really want to stay in this company? I am sure they will try to make you leave the company in different way in the future, it is endless.”

I quit. Then the HR called my city office to find out something about me. For example, my sister is single mom, my brother is in jail, my registration of birth city is in a ghetto area..I think HR tried to find out these information to use for reasons to sue me. Of course, you can’t sue or fire because of these reasons, but some Japanese shame for these family situation and accept being fired. However, this is illegal in Japan and I am not afraid of other people to know my family situation.

The city office reported to the police. And whole school district went on warning state to protect children from discriminative attacker. My sister got text from the elementary school, “Stranger called city office to ask for the resident’s personal identity. This may lead to terrorism or shooting targeted to minority. Please all residents look for strangers and call the police.”

Ohhhh, that is my HR!!!!

I felt very very sorry to everyone in my small town…

Why? I thought the US company respect the law. The company I worked for was a startup with 5,000 employees globally. But I have heard the same story even from IT giant G and A. Why? Why don’t they just lay me off? If they laid me off with package, I was happy to sign.

Japan is a small country. All the Japanese English speaker knows each other. If you neglect the employees like this, soon, no one will work for those companies. You will not able to hire good employees in Japan anymore. I am very frustrated with stupid management.

Why I don't write this in LinkedIn? Because the company try to sue me. Stupid!!!

If any of US company has difficulty managing branch in Japan, be careful! Your employees in Japan is stupidly spreading the bad reputation!!!

Danny Phantom (and technically optional crossover) Prompt

Imagine, if you will, a not-aging Danny Fenton. There’s about a dozen ways to do this, but in this case—Danny still has a human lifespan, he just looks human (though, I won’t argue against any immortal Dannys). As Fenton, he’s just stuck at fourteen. Phantom, being a ghost whose appearance is based on what he sees himself as, does look older. By this point, he’s probably retired from superheroics—I just find unphased and jaded 18 year old Danny to be hilarious. So, he’s just like ‘I wanna go to college’.

So he does. He just. Always looks 14. His hair grows, he can build muscle, and he can definitely have dark eyes—but otherwise? Short ass 14 year old. He constantly has to prove that yes, he’s the real Danny Fenton, and no, this is not a scam. He eventually has to get meta-specific paperwork filled out—no need for the genetic test if the power is fairly obvious. (Of course, it’s possible to do this AU as not crossover, but then you’ll have to do the legwork of making it less odd that someone has superpowers, and whether that means everyone knows he’s Phantom, which might change some of the issues. It also doesn’t have to be DC, for instance, you could use Marvel or even My Hero Academia—ultimately, up to the writer.)

Anyways, he gets his degree(s), enters the workforce, and by the Ancients is it hard to be taken seriously. Even people who see his paperwork and know for a fact he’s a full fledged adult are just like, aw, poor kid, can’t even reach the top cabinets without stretching or climbing. So, while he could just keep being the most qualified 14-looking-adult, he’s quickly getting sick of it. He can’t even be a school teacher, none of his students will take him seriously! Not even the younger ones, cause even the other teachers aren’t respecting him.

There are about… three options available to him, up to whoever wants to pick up this sort of prompt.

1-he gets into acting or modeling. Or perhaps, stunt acting. And everyone is just a bit unnerved about how absolutely none of the nonsense seems to get to him, and he’s just… a little *too* bendy sometimes. He’d make a great scare actor, if he wasn’t terrible at scaring people.

2-he goes into the work force as Phantom in a cheap wig and terrible contacts. Half the time, he forgets at least one contact. Cue mystery of who the hell this guy is, because, for ONCE, someone actually paid attention to the paperwork and knows that he DOESN’T look like THAT.

3-he tries to get work in a slightly more remote position, where his colleagues are few to none. Of course, that is, until some hero or another such professional has to meet him in person, and gets one hell of a shock about who their expert on the computer has been all this time.

There’s of course the undercurrent of Danny’s experiences as a teen hero, so sometimes absolutely wild situations show up, and his stories are like, super weird. He thinks at least SOME of his experiences must be universal, and they’re… really, really not. The outlandish stories don’t help the whole ‘not taken serious’ thing, but then they turn out to be true. Bonus points to rogues or ghosts showing up to say hi and everyone is like WAS THAT A FUCKING DRAGON?! And Danny’s just like ‘yeah she was a beauty pageant coordinator in my hometown, we kept in touch. I helped put her brother in jail’. As if that did NOT just raise more questions than before.

Of course, use or don’t use what you want (such as, he does keep a public-ish position, or he just goes full villain to prove a point, or even somehow starts working undercover at schools and summer camps for xyz reasons, whether or not the Justice League finds him, what his degree(s) weee even in, etc etc), I just think that Forever Teen Danny stories are interesting.

Basically… it’s reverse Shazam, haha.
