Getting into Sanders Sides again has led me to be totally normal about the playlists for each of the sides. I promise you I'm not screaming about Landslide, a song about the fear of everything you love potentially crashing down being in Patton's. I swear I'm not getting violently ill over some of the songs in Logan’s playlist, like Erase Me and The Watchtower. I'm definitely not obsessing over like, half of Roman and Virgil's playlists and Razzle Dazzle being on Janus'. Remus' playlist is also immaculate. Again, I'm totally normal about this

Making Albums for the sides Part 1:
ok so i said in the past that I wanted to do like album long playlists for the sides so... I guess this is the start of that. Yippee!
so I have this little system to decide what goes into each playlist and that system is three categories as to how they correlate with the side:
1: the song is something I think they'd listen to/something that I think is from their favourite genre of music
2: The songs meaning which correlates with the side in some way
3: The vibes that the song gives
so some I will kinda have a deep explanation for whilst others r just simply "hehe they like this song hehe"
anyways let's get into it
keep in mind I accidentally went passed the usual album length for this one (usually 8-15 songs) but there was so many good songs to put
Remus's Album
🐙The Kind of Mind you'd only find in hell💚
⚠️ This playlist has songs that are really like... loud... as in like harsh sounding loud that could be uncomfortable to listen to with high volume. make sure U listen with a volume that's loud enough to hear, not loud enough to burst Ur eardrums. (also I'm rating this playlist PG 13 cus there's alot of uh.... interesting choices)⚠️

Forbidden Fruit (The Duke's theme song) -Thomas Sanders
I mean it's very much HIS theme song. like... I don't think I need to explain why it's on here, a nice way to start his album tbh
Staple Tapeworms on My Penis- PASSENGER OF SHIT
Ok everyone lower your volumes for THIS SONG SPECIFICALLY LIKE EVEN I HAVE TROUBLE LISTENING TO IT CUS IT JUST HURTS MY EARS. that being said, I think this song is literally the most Remus song I've ever heard. The harsh sound of it all, the screaming, the lyrics, the fact that its just sounds so disorganised that it just catches you off guard sometimes, THIS SONG IS JUST LITERALLY HIM. this is something he'd blast in the car on field trips. he would ANNOY EVERY SINGLE SIDE AND THOMAS with this song. THEY HATE IT.
Cacao and Cocaine - SOFIA ISELLA
so I said in a previous post how this song is like a really good song for intrulogical, but I felt like this was more of a Remus song than a Logan song. Its about a study where they had locked people in rooms to see how long they could be bored for, with the option to experience electrical shocks if they so choose. I'm pretty sure alot of them did choose the shocks because the boredom was getting too much. this is y I chose this song for the playlist, not only does the lyrics and the song itself feel really intrusive and unsettling, but the study itself feels as if intrusive thoughts were clouding the people's heads. and guess whose literally the embodiment of intrusive thoughts? REMUS. FUCKING. SANDERS. also it does give some vibe of Remus in a sense that he's trying to make Thomas give into his intrusive thoughts to let Remus take control of him.
Guess - Charlie xcx ft Billie Eilish
I think I speak for everyone in the fandom when I say that Remus is a certified BRAT!!!! he listens to the brat album all the time. not to mention he's just a certified slut too/lh. I think this would be one of his favourite songs on the brat album (I could be wrong I haven't listened to the whole album yet don't cancel me please/J) plus I feel like he'd just make jokes about it too like "You wanna guess the colour of my underwear, you wanna know what I got going on down there. is it stained with shit or drenched in piss, blah blah blah blah-" idk
In My Mouth - Black Dresses
Now this one is more about the vibe of the song. idk the songs meaning I forgot to look it up but it gives the vibe of if Remus were to fall in love with someone in an unhealthy amount. like I love soft Remus ships as much as the next guy, genuinely, but also, we've also seen Remus is rather uh.... crazy... to say the least. he'd be the type to do DRASTIC things for love. like some of the lyrics here: "I want you to destroy me so I feel better", "I wanna put you in my mouth, I wanna crush you with my jaws" (now this could be a metaphor but I think he'd like... do it literally), "I wanna fuck our bodies into broken shells I wanna go to hell forever" just- idk, again, it just sounds very intrusive to me
Custer - Slipknot
YOU CAN NOT TELL ME THIS LITTLE TRASH FUCK DOES NOT LISTEN TO METAL. I have a head cannon that he and Virgil used to be like MAJOR besties (before AA) and they'd listen to metal with eachother and even do karaoke nights where they'd just scream metal lyrics and annoy the fuck out of Janus. that's... that's kinda it for this one I just think he'd be a metal head-
I'm Yer Dad - GRLwood
again this one is more like i feel he'd listen to this one, so I don't really have much explanation, besides the fact I feel like he'd just yell out the "and I got a really big dick" part just cus it's funny
Cherry bomb - The Runaways
AGAIN! another song I'd feel like he'd listen to. and I guess the vibe of this song as well. it feels really rebellious, which I think we can all agree Remus is exactly that. I feel like this song is a "LOOK OUT BITCHES IM GONNA DO WHAT I WANT AND IDC WHAT YOU THINK" type of vibe, and Remus literally just... does what he wants despite Thomas's and the other side's discomfort
Touch me I'm sick - Mudhoney
AGAINNNNNNNNNN another song I think he'd like. I just looked up the meaning of the song in the time I'm writing this just so I can talk about this song a little bit more cus I actually really love this song and honestly I didn't really see much, except something about the lyrics. Apparently, it's kinda like a dark humour sarcastic take on issues such as disease and violent woohooing, and Remus is a huge fan of dark humour... as we've all seen-... so yeah, I think this song is definitely a Remus vibe.. (unless it isn't, I found it on wiki so idk if it's really all that true)
Living Dead Girl - Rob Zombie
REMUS LOVES METAL. HE LISTENS TO THIS SONG IM SURE OF IT... that's my whole argument.
Brutus - The Buttress
I LOVE THIS SONG GUYS OMGGGGG. I'm actually pretty happy to talk about this one because not only do I think Remus would love it too, but the lyrics, the vibe, the EVERYTHING. IT'S GIVING RAGE! ITS GIVING ENVY! ITS GIVING "RAAAAH IM GOING TO JEFF THE KILLS YOU"!!! ok FR tho, let's talk about the lyrics first. from listening to it without looking up its meaning, it's got alot of mentions of envy and hate for someone. and now hear me out let me cook. I have a theory, a game theory even/ref, that Remus has some jealousy over Roman because Roman has been kinda deemed as THE creativity by Thomas for a while. I feel because Thomas sees Roman as his Creativity, his hero, his perfect golden side, and he sees Remus as this evil being that should be disregarded, I feel like Remus would eventually try to get rid of Roman so that Thomas would have no choice but to listen to him for creative input: "I've been watching him for my entire life, I hate the air he breathes, his foolish decrees his words so contrived and I hate the way the town's people gather outside. They hang on every breath, Cling to his chest, Home to his heart full of pride". THIS SET OF LYRICS ALONE JUST GIVES THAT VIBE, DOES IT NOT; The townspeople being the sides and Thomas, ROMAN IS LITERALLY THOMAS'S PRIDE?!? CMON PPL!!! UGH I WANNA TALK ABOUT IT MORE BUT IVE ALREADY TALKED ENOUGH BUT THIS WHOLE SONG IS JUST GIVING RAGE/ENVY FILLED REMUS AND I LIVE FOR IT!!! also it's also so fucking good cus the orange side is most likely going to be rage, and I feel like if Orange and Remus were to combine their powers they'd would MOST LIKELY be THE MOST powerful sides.
Missus Piano - Rio Romeo
I think this is more of a "I think the artist give the Remus vibes here" more than the song but just hear me out. I love Rio Romeo!!! their songs have this artistic messiness to it I just love, but like not in a non structured, not mixed, no effort type of way, ykwim? its kinda hard to explain it but it's kinda like a soothing uncanniness? idk. but this song specifically. I LOVE IT OMG I REPEAT IT SO MANY TIMES. so this song is about a man in love with his piano. despite it being worn and out of tune, he cherishes it like it worth all the jewels in the world. It just reminds me of Remus alot. I feel like he sees the beauty in the unloved in a way. examples? MR FUZZY?!? BRO MADE THAT THING OUT OF THE DRAIN OF HIS SHOWER AND HE WAS LIKE "this is my baby and I entrust it to you, virgil :)" and got fucking cryptic when he noticed virgil dropped it in disgust. HE NAMED HIS SHOWER DRAIN JOANNE FABRIC CUS HE THOUGHT IT WAS CUTE. HE LOVES THE UNSETTLING. and I feel this when I listen to this song. alot of people when they hear an out of tune piano may think "oh that sounds creepy" or "oh that sounds awful" but Remus (just like the protag of the song) would be like "wow that sounds so nice :)" in which I kinda agree... depending. out of tune pianos can sound creepy but it kinda gives a sense of nostalgia to me for some reason
Piggy Pie - Insane Clown Posse
REMUS IS A JUGGALO. ITS CANNON. RESOURCE? I MADE IT THE FUCK UP! BUT LIKE CMON!!! INSANE CLOWN POSSE IS SUCH A REMUS BAND!! band? duo? artists? idk what to call them, but really I think he'd just listen to alot of insane clown posse, plus he'd be the type to go and just end conservative lives
To Catch a Predator - Insane Clown Posse
yes. another insane clown posse song. I was telling myself "ok let's not have alot of the same artist in one playlist" but uh.... there's three total ICP songs in this one.... so uh... hope you guys like rapping clowns! anyways, basically the same as Piggy pie, in the sense that I think he'd like this song, but also I feel like the chorus itself is a very Remus lyric: "I'm probably gonna burn for this, there's no lesson to learn from this, there's nothing imma earn but it sure is fun". I feel like this is Remus's mindset whenever he chooses to mess with Thomas with his intrusive thoughts. like it could put Thomas is such high amount of danger and he'd be like "oop I might die from this but this is so fun hehe:)" like ykwim?
My Axe - Insane Clown Posse
ok guys stop throwing your tomato's please. I get it. three ICP songs I know you're probably sick of it. but this song is again, a song Remus would listen to AND relate to. The axe in this song could be like his Mace/morning star/whatever and I feel like he'd have a deep connection with it to some extent, I mean, he's probably killed so many ppl with it, why wouldn't he?
Unpunishable - Ethel Cain
Ok I'm really excited to talk about this one. so originally I wasn't gonna put this song here but I looked up the meaning of the song. Its about embracing your desires despite the social pressure to conform. now on the surface it seems alot more like a Janus song but think of it this way. "Desires that are forbidden" Remus is he embodiment of forbidden creativity. in DWIT, virgil and Patton really thought that the reason the Remus was apart of Thomas was because that Thomas REALLY had the desire to do the things he was thinking about all thanks to Catholic guilt. also I kinda found this song from an animatic which was literally about Remus i forgot their user tho IM SORRY 😭😭😭 but yeah, it also gives vibes of the end of WTIT where he was pushing Logan to snap at him, trying to make Logan give in to his forbidden thought of "I shouldn't feel anything." type thing yk?
Two Trucks - Lemon Demon
Remus LOVES this song. this is another song he'd blast during car trips, but he'd be like "BOOOOOOO BORIIING" at the two trucks holding hands part, Patton loves it tho... well... until it goes back into the trucks fucking-
Killing in the name - Rage against the Machine
Another song I think Remus would love. it's mostly just I think he likes metal. is this song metal? idk. but anyways. I think this also has the rebellious vibe to it to that Remus has. like the "fuck you I won't do what you tell me" lyric is what I think Remus's mindset is, he does NOT want to listen to anyone. he just wants to be a dick
Girl Anachronism - The Dresden Dolls
I love this song so much dawg. its just has a really Unhinged vibe to it that just sounds like someone's losing their mind. AND I feel like it kinda captures the frustration Remus has of not being listened to. "Don't call the actors they've seen it all before, they'll say just let her crash and burn. she'll learn, the attention just encourages her" like in DWIT Remus is trying HIS VERY BEST to get Thomas's attention, and Logan saying the best way to deal with Remus is just basically ignore him, like I'd be pretty mad too. I just looked up the meaning of the song and basically it's about a girl whose described as "the world's worst accident" and yk... being labelled the BAD one out of the twins, it kinda fits, don't you think?
Wet - Dazey and the Scouts
GUYYYYYSSSSSSSSS SHUT UP THIS IS MY JAM!!!! I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG CHAT YOU CANNOT FATHOM. ok anyways, this song just gives Remus to me, I'm not sure why. I guess I feel like he'd listen to it, or this might be his sad boy anthem, cus realistically it is quite a sad song. but just idk, it's giving Remus to me for some reason
Ready to Die - Andrew W.K.
we all know where this song is from, chat. we all know it. Ok, so. I feel like Remus would really like this song, not only is it because it's about killing and stuff, but he watched THAT ONE MLP VIDEO and thought "yk what. Roman likes MLP, I think it'd be very funny if I showed him this" spoiler alert, it wasn't. he would also try to ask Patton to make cupcakes with him but Roman would have to be like "NO DO NOT BAKE CUPCAKES WITH REMUS, PATTON." JUST because of that vid. he's afraid. I am too.
HURT - 1 800 PAIN
ok guys U might wanna turn Ur volume down for this song too, it's not as bad as the staple tapeworms on my penis song but it's still a rather harsh sounding song. ok so, I feel like this is just a song that Remus would really enjoy. like he the type of mf to listen to music that just sounds like.... sounds. like really loud irritating sounds. like I like this song too but it's just so NOISEY iykwim
Not My Type: Dead as Fuck 2 - Motionless In White
Ok last song. I. LOVE. THIS. SONG. I don't really have anything really that good to say as to y I put it in this playlist except i feel like Remus and Virgil would really like it. before Accepting Anxiety, I feel like they'd have like matching bios that was just this song? like Virgils would be "Tried out the living but I don't believe the hype" and then Remus's would be "cus if (s)he's got a pulse then (s)he's not my type". also "(s)he loves me cus I give head like a zombie" is something Remus would DEFINITELY say.
should I do more? what side should I do next?

why the grudge by olivia rodrigo is actually written abt roceit: an unnecessarily long breakdown
(aka basically an in this essay i will… post but i actually wrote it.)
okay so starting off strong, pof was literally released on a friday in may. (i know technically it took place on april 13th in cannon, but the still what are the chances here.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
next we have these lines would refer to the trust janus built up during the courtroom that he then broke during pof. how he set him up to take the fall no matter what, crushing either roman’s self image and/or his dream. it also refers to the flippant way janus address this and how he basically refers to it as a joke. it’s pretty clear throughout the episode, however, roman holds onto everything that was say.
Tumblr media
i sorta feel like this speaks for itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this next part i think sums up a lot of pof pretty well. roman making fun of janus’s name is shitty. him calling janus evil the whole episode is shitty. BUT everyone JUST told him janus WAS evil and not to be trusted. and janus WASNT to be trusted in svs since he literally was manipulating him. janus caused like half of this and fed into roman’s insecurities and he knew it. so yes, i think roman is handling this BAD, but janus cut first, and he cut deeper.
Tumblr media
lowkey another one i feel speaks for itself. this is pretty much stated this is what janus is doing. literally.
Tumblr media
roman and pretending he’s fine when he’s not. i mean it’s like all the sides, but def the way roman seems to handle it (like not too much cannon has happened since so) like this. it still seems to affect him in fwas confidence wise and all. just the way this hasn’t even been addressed. you know the boy is struggling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay i kept out a lot of the love stuff cause like that’s not cannon and i tried to keep this close to cannon. BUT it fits with that too and my headcannons… maybe another post. it’s just so perfect.
okay if you read this far i love you forever <3 also this may be formatted like the worst thing ever, i don’t use tumblr really so i was struggling making this. also it’s late and i cant think atm :))

Another one!!
A PsychoAnalysis of Virgil Sanders’ Playlist
Tumblr media
There is an EXTREME theme in most of Virgil's songs of growing apart from someone. Like I'm talking heavy themes of a messy falling out, and I think we all know what its referencing. But I'll save that to the end. Here's the songs analysis!
Theres a lot of emotions connected with the collapse of a relationship, and its demonstrated so in SO MANY of his songs, so I'll color-code it to make sense. Blue is sadness and regret, red is anger and frustration, yellow is relief. Keep in mind that these arent all the songs, just the ones that most support my theory/analysis.
Sally's Song: talks about being unable to be with someone romantically because of the lack of acknowledgement towards the singer. "What will become of my dear friend? Where will his actions lead us then?" It's mournful of the loss of connection that the singer once had with the subject of the song, like they're longing for it back. Yes ik this song was maybe just added because he likes Nightmare Before Christmas, but it fits into this theme quite well...
It Ends Tonight: Talking about ending a relationship, cutting someone off very messily. "Maybe it's best you leave me alone", "Now I'm on my own side/It's better than being on your side". Despite being more heated, I'd say this can also be a song of relief due to the lyric "a weight is lifted from my chest". ALSO the "darkness turns to light" lyric can directly reference Virgil, and how he essentially "transformed" from being a Dark Side to a Light Side over the course of his character arc.
I'd Hate to Be You When People Find Out What This Song is About: bro this one is RIPE with themes of fall out, as well as regret. The singer seems to have had a hand in this messy breakup or fall out with the subject of the song, and seems resentful of themself for it. "When I asked you/Believe me/You never let go/But I let go". They are conscious of their role in ruining this relationship, and seem to place most of the blame on themselves for it. "And now you're trying desperately/But I'm tongue tied and terrified of what I'll say" implies that they seem to want to get back with whoever they pushed away, but are too afraid of repeating the past to actually reconcile.
A Decade Under the Influence: this song seems to be about friend group issues. There's hints of good memories "You kept still until the long drive home/You slept safe and close to the window", and yet theres the underlying anxiety of "I got a bad feeling about this". Then there's the whole "To hell with you and all your friends" that repeats consistently throughout the song, as well as the lyric "I thought it through and my worst brings out the best in you" making me believe that the singer was probably the butt of the jokes or the most "replaceable" one within the friend group. I hesitate to categorize this song as "angry or frustrated" because it sounds more anxious and paranoid, but can also fall under relief with the context we have of Virgil's story; relief that he doesn't feel that way anymore.
I'm Not Okay: okay I get it this song was put on his playlist cause "haha Virgil emo" but I'm serious it also falls under this theme quite directly. And yes, its regret out of everything. "I never want to let you down/Or have you go, it's better off this way"; despite the singer not wanting their subject to be cut out of their life, its obvious they know its beneficial for both parties. There's a bit of relief as well as regret. I think this can also go along with Influence's themes of being the scapegoat of a friend group, because of the lyrics "forget about the dirty looks" and "You sing the words but don't know what it means/To be a joke".
Thnks Fr th Mmrs: Okay this one is my personal fav, I think Fallout Boy slaps. Anywasy, this song can be both heatedly passionate and relief, but I believe it better fits under relief. It seems like this event that happened is far enough in the past that the singer has come to terms with it. Specifically with the line "One night and one more time/Thanks for the memories/Even though they weren't so great". This can also be taken as sarcastically rather than genuine, and I think both fit Virgil's character well. The singer understands that what has happened has happened, and there's no way to change the past "I'm looking forward to the future." However, they still feel weighed down because of it "And this crystal ball/It's always cloudy except for/When you look into the past."
Ignorance: AAHHH THIS ONE IS MY ALL TIME FAV THANK YOU VIRGIL FOR INTRODUCING ME TO PARAMORE. Ahem. Okay. So I referenced this song in like my first post to this blog, but I think it's VERY obvious what Side this song refers to. I mean, take a guess: "Where's your gavel? Your jury?/What's my offense this time?", "The same tricks that, that once fooled me/They won't get you anywhere/I'm not the same kid from your memory", "Ignorance is your new best friend". Yeah this song is aimed towards Deceit/Janus 100%. This is a very anger-powered song and its clear that the singer holds immense hatred towards the subject. Deceit I believe is the best contender for this because of the entirety of SvS ("Where's your gavel? Your jury?"), and also because "ignorance" is something very intertwined to Deceit's character and his motivations. When we first meet him, one ofthe first things he says as himself is "what you don't know can't hurt you," which is a different way of saying "ignorance is bliss." Thus, "ignorance is your best friend". There's also references to the singer's past relationship with the subject, and it can be inferred that it was positive in some aspects, but ended up being toxic and repressing to them, thus why they left; "Yeah, we used to stick together/We wrote our names in blood/But I guess you can't accept that the change is good." I could go on and on about this song, but I think I've made my point.
The Ice is Getting Thinner: hooh boy. This one makes me sad. This song is about a relationship slowly dying, but both parties holding on to the relationship without really trying to salvage it. It seems that "change" was once again the reason for this drifting apart ("We're not the same, dear, as we used to be/The seasons have changed and so have we".) It's longing, just like Sally's Song, longing for how things used to be, even if what "used to be" wasn't healthy or beneficial for both parties; "it saddens me to say/But we both know, well, it's true/That the ice was getting thinner/Under me and you." It sounds almost like they are coming to a realization and acceptance of this.
OKAY SONG ANALYSIS DONE, HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO VIRGIL??
Well I think thats obvious. He's being eat up by these swarming emotions that surround his leaving of the Dark Sides. The fact that these make up 8 out of the 20 songs (and many more can be connected back to this theme of relationship fallout!) shows that it's been on his mind for a long time. If we go off of the implications of these songs, it seems that Virgil himself realizes that his leaving the Dark Sides was seen as some sort of betrayal, no matter the circumstances. He blames himself, he blames Janus, he's angry about their fall out but he also is relieved by it. No matter what happened, I believe that these feelings are going to come to a head one way or another. He needs to confront his past, and it seems that he wants to, but is also held back by his own anxiety over the situation (and his anxiety in general.) There's so much tension between him and Deceit/Janus specifically that is just bubbling beneath the surface that probably is going to erupt some time in the future and will drive a rift even further between the Light and Dark sides. In what way? I don't know....
~
hope you enjoyed :) virgil's playlist is my favorite out of all of the sides' and thats partially because I was an emo when it released HAHAH. I'm thinking of doing deceit's next, cause hes my fav character, and i just think its fitting lol. i also might redo roman's psychoanalysis bc i literally did that last night at midnight and I wanna add more evidence and direct quotes. im a nerd...i like writing essays XD
@thatsthat24 what do u think man did i do a good job 👀

im sorry its throwing up abt anxceit hours again. i mean it always throwing up abt anxceit hours in my head but yknow.
anyway i love when theyre horrible to each other and hate each other and would never, god forbid, trust each other but also they will willingly and freely share the most vulnerable parts of their heart and soul and pain with each other with no question.
because it doesnt matter. because when theyve both teared each others throats out showing a scar is nothing. because the thought of being hurt when theyre down by the other isnt terrifying; its sick satisfaction its vindication its "i know you would" its "i dont know why i expected better".
its the scorpions tail in the frogs back. its their nature.
(but really, in their heads they would never hurt the other without reason, even if they expect the other to hurt them. for a selfish reason of course; they would never give them the satisfaction. to prove them right.)
(or maybe. they just dont want them hurt.)

Day 2 of Fest... time to unleash one very big post 👀
You've seen the title on the link above, today I bring you an Alec playlist. But me being me, there's a tiny bit more to it than just being a selection of music I love (it absolutely is, though, don't get me wrong). This is a narrative playlist—in other words, each song represents a moment in Alec's life, in chronological order, and based on my interpretation of (and expansions on) the GoldenEye canon. Oh and... although I didn't put that much thought into this aspect of the playlist, it happens to be mostly British songs, some Russian ones and a few others. Pretty fitting, I would say.
See you below the cut for the full story behind each song :D
Pink Floyd, Another Brick in the Wall pt. 1
Our story starts with Alec being a little orphan in 1950s-60s Britain. Therefore, my choice went to a song about a very similar little orphan—Pink, the protagonist of The Wall. Although circumstances are different, the song tells the same story for both kids: they're lonely and deeply resenting of their father's (or parents') absence... which will be the root of all the ills in their lives.
David Bowie, Life on Mars?
There was a joke between @prismatic-bell and I once. Since Bowie and Alec are so similar in terms of appearance, Bowie must have been Alec's first crush (and therefore, bi awakening). Therefore, there has to be some Bowie in here—and this song in particular is perfect to describe Alec growing up, looking at the depressing Cold War world from his young eyes.
David Sylvian, Forbidden Colours
Speaking of bi awakenings, well this is it. At this stage of the story, young Alec has realised ‘[his] love wears forbidden colours’. And just like in the song, he'll ‘[try] to show unquestioning faith in everything’, from public school to the army. Another brick in his wall, as somebody else would sing.
John Barry, Theme from the Persuaders
The only instrumental in this playlist, but perhaps the name of the composer alone tipped you off on why I chose it. By now Alec is a Royal Marine, and he meets a certain Navy commander—a fellow named James Bond, you might have heard of him. So why the Persuaders and not a classic Bond theme? Easy, just watch the opening of said Persuaders. The parallel editing between the lives of Roger Moore's and Tony Curtis's characters... I dream we could have that for Brosnan!Bond and Alec.
Pet Shop Boys, This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave
So Alec is an MI6 agent now (probably under James's influence). The point here is, he actually loves his job—being in the shadows, not having to be around handsome men in uniform all the time anymore... He's found his place, and he can look back on his younger years as a bad time that is finally over (or is it?) Fun fact by the way, this song could have been the Living Daylights' theme song. It didn't go too far into that process, but still I highly recommend this edit of TLD's credits with the song over it.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Relax
‘Not having to be around handsome men in uniform all the time anymore’... yeah. Well, there is still is one ridiculously handsome man Alec is around all the time—James. Cue more bi panic, growing jealousy, and, of course, sharing everything absolutely everything. Doesn't help that Relax, an extremely gay song (enough to be banned by the BBC when it came out...), is the hot thing on the radio back in those days...
Tears for Fears, Shout
Alec has just earned his 00 status, and he has many scores to settle with life... so he's going to shout, and life is going to hear him. Case in point, his bullets.
a-ha, The Living Daylights
A continuation of the previous song. This is Alec and James living the high life as 00 agents, full of broken gadgets, expensive food and clothing, private jokes and other code phrases. An excuse for me to shoehorn my favourite Bond song in the playlist? Absolutely. a-ha's synth version of it, too—as much as I love Barry's version (the one used in the movie), I have to say this one is vastly superior.
Public Image Ltd, The Order of Death
Oh no. Alec has been too curious and got his hands on his MI6 file. Now he knows everything. The Lienz Cossacks and their betrayal by the British; his parents' survivor guilt; the fact his name shouldn't be Trevelyan but his parents' Russian name (Trailin, in my headcanon); the fact MI6 knew his origins and still got him to work for them (if it didn't have a say in how he was brought up...) He wanted to know, now he's got his answer. Whether he likes it or not.
Secret Service, Flash in the Night
Alec is depressed. He doesn't really know yet what to make of everything he learned in his MI6 file. He looks at James but he knows he can't tell him anything. James is part of the system that betrayed his parents, then betrayed him in turn. James can't possibly understand how it feels like. Yet again, Alec is alone. The scar once healed forever dissolves in the rain, as the song has it.
Кино, Спокойная ночь (Kino, Spokoynaya noch'—Calm Night)
Not too long later, a still depressed Alec is wandering in Soviet streets during a mission. Moscow or Leningrad, who knows (one day I'll have to choose, because I really want to write a one shot based on this song). Ideas are coming to him, but they aren't really clear. The only sure thing in all this is that he's starting to feel a lot more Russian than British... hence the inclusion of the first (and not last) Soviet rock song in the playlist.
C.C. Catch, ‘Cause You Are Young
Probably the same night, Alec stumbles on an underground nightclub blaring Western songs. After all, it is the mid-1980s, and Gorbachyov's USSR slowly starts to allow such music within its borders (censorship is still there, though, as proved by the blurb on the Soviet edition of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's second album not mentioning a single thing about Relax. Western music, okay, but gay? How about nyet) Anyway, my point: Alec hears this obscure German pop song, and suddenly everything starts to fall into place in his mind. A wake-up call, if you will. What he needs now is to catch his freedom from MI6, whatever the cost.
Depeche Mode, Personal Jesus
Janus is born. Alec's Personal Jesus, the persona that will give him his freedom from—and revenge on—Britain. The inspiration behind this choice of song comes from Brigada, the most famous Russian TV show of all time. Basically, the story of a group of friends in the late 1980s who go on to become a powerful mafia group in the 1990s. In the first episode, the protagonist decides to commit his first crime over Personal Jesus... and commits said crime in an underground nightclub that blares ‘Cause You Are Young. Small world, I know.
Peter Gabriel, We Do What We're Told
Alec is preparing his plans to fake his death and truly become Janus, but in the meantime he has to pretend everything's fine. So he does what he's told... like in his childhood, like in the army. He absolutely hates it, but he knows his patience will pay off.
Propaganda, p:Machinery
One word: Arkhangelsk. The planning phase is over, the day has come for Alec to make his move and disappear from the face of the Earth. Except that, as we all know, not everything goes according to plan... Fun fact, I just learned that this song was greatly influenced by David Sylvian, of Forbidden Colours fame. The world doesn't get any bigger, does it?
Pink Floyd, Hey You
In a Soviet hospital, Alec recovers from his Arkhangelsk wounds... and falls deeper into depression. But with Janus on board, depression takes on a much more threatening face. Alec is despaired, but he also wants to kill. That should distract him from despair.
Nautilus Pompilius, Воздух (Vozdukh—Air)
As the USSR slowly dies, a new organisation comes to be—the Janus Syndicate. It's only the early days, and it probably doesn't really ressemble what we see of it in GoldenEye. But it comes at a time Soviets themselves are growing disenchanted from their world. as everything crumbles down, even law enforcement doesn't see any point in catching criminals anymore (as told by the lyrics). Exactly the kind of fertile ground the Syndicate needs to grow.
The Rolling Stones, Sympathy for the Devil
There's a newcomer in Alec's life—a certain Xenia Onatopp. Is she a cis or trans woman, I'll let you choose. What she definitely is, at least, is someone who wants absolute freedom, even if it means harming others (a cause Alec can relate to). That, and the kind of untamed energy that would greatly benefit from being given a direction. For instance... working for Janus? Unless it is dominating Janus in the bedroom... my Alec is bi for a reason, after all.
Depeche Mode, Never Let Me Down Again
Do you know Scarface, and more specifically the Push It to the Limit segment? Well picture that, but with Alec as Tony Montana, Xenia as Manny Ribera, the freshly renamed St Petersburg instead of sunny Miami... and Depeche Mode instead of Giorgio Moroder's music (with the caveat that Alec clearly didn't get married back in those days, because there's only one person he'd marry: James). These are the heydays of the Russian mafia, when some people who previously knew nothing of capitalism became dizziyingly rich overnight... and fought each other to death for more power. The days of the Gulf War, also—when the Janus Syndicate sold stolen Red Army weapons to Iraq. Pop quiz, do you know what the mafia bosses who survived those turbulent times are called today? Oligarchs. Kinda sheds a new light on Alec, I won't lie.
Tina Turner, GoldenEye
I had to include it. There's no two ways about it, this is the ultimate, canon Alec (Bondalec, even) song. Just look at the lyrics, and tell me this isn't Alec spitting all his jealousy on James. Xenia would be just as menacing, yes, but nowhere near as salty. So where are we in our story for me to include this song? Well, just at the beginning of GoldenEye proper: Xenia has met James in Monte Carlo, and tells Alec as they prepare to steal the Tiger (yes, Xenia's accomplice in that scene is Alec. Fight me). Cue a very sour laugh from Alec, who cannot believe fate has put James on his path again. Not that it really matters to him at this point though—all he's focused on is his upcoming revenge on Britain, and if James has to be a bystander, then so be it.
Midge Ure, The Man Who Sold the World
James wanted to be set up with Janus... well, he's got what he asked for. Janus, in person, at the statue park. Alec, alive and with a murderous intent. Again a song with a connection to Bowie, as you might have noticed... but unsurpringly I prefer the very 1980s, synth-heavy version by Midge Ure. Bowie, hmmmm... a hint towards renewed bi panic on Alec's part? You'll know soon enough.
Nautilus Pompilius, Нежный вампир (Nezhniy vampir—Tender Vampire)
A little interlude before we enter the endgame. The tender vampire here is Janus, of course—dragging Alec's better self into the abyss, being so jealous of James he starts circling around Natalya like a hungry shark. The absolute creep we see in the train scene, in short. For the record, I know this song from Brat, another very famous Russian movie about the 1990s mafia (I'll probably run a watchalong for it later during this Fest, so stay tuned 👀).
Propaganda, The Murder of Love
Train scene, act 2: the Mexican standoff. Alec and James face each other again, but James still doesn't really have the upper hand. So Alec (well, Janus) spits more poison at him, this time a lot more personal and hurtful. And yes, the bi panic is firmly there, as smug as Alec tries to look. He knows he can't kill James, but he also knows he can't let James talk to him. Alec can't be diverted from his revenge on life itself, because that would be acknowledging that all the time and effort he put into that goal was a waste. Therefore, he prefers to gloat at James... in other words, to be the victim who's become the judge, and to make James plead for mercy.
Pet Shop Boys, I’m Not Scared
Well, this particular one originally wasn't in the playlist. But the moment I first heard it, I knew I had to include it. This has to be James's answer to all of Alec's venom in GoldenEye and The Murder of Love. James has always loved Alec, and doesn't understand how Alec could have grown so scorned and spiteful. Are Janus and Alec really the same person? Will he have to kill Alec? If he does, will James ever be able to forgive himself? If only he and Alec could talk heart to heart... as @3nigm4art commented about this song, Alec would cry if he heard James singing it to him. Perhaps he could even be reasoned... So what I envision here is the beach scene, with James looking at the sea asking himself all those questions—and Alec, somewhere in his lair, being unable to take James out of his mind.
Leonard Cohen, First We Take Manhattan
We are now in the Janus control center in Cuba. Xenia is dead by now, but Alec probably hasn't really processed that yet. After all, he has other things on his mind: his scheme coming so close to completion... and James right in front of him, watching and commenting what he sees. Alec likes this, in a way—what better witness to him becoming a literal god than James? He's not jealous anymore at his point, because in his mind, he's won. He's done the impossible: destroying Britain, and beating James. But there's an issue here... being so drunk with his triumph, he forgot that James won't let himself be just a passive bystander. Which surely won't come back to bite him in the arse, will it?
Pet Shop Boys, It's a Sin
As everything explodes around him (literally), Alec loses it. James has stolen the triumph he deserved to get. Therefore, James will die. By Alec's hand. Ensues the fight on the antenna. Alec probably knows he won't survive it, but he doesn't care anymore. All his rage, all his jealousy, all his frustration are what fuels him at this point—with glimpses from his past flashing before his eyes, as the song suggests. He has wasted nine years of his life, and the rest of it in fact. His whole life has been nothing but sin, from his origins and attraction to James to becoming a spy then a mafia leader. So if there's no turning back... at least he'll go out with a bang. And hopefully take James with him.
Кино, Легенда (Kino, Legenda—Legend)
The story ends here. Alec falls to his death after James lets him go, and James has to live with the memory of Alec haunting him. But is it what really happens? If anything, this song is here to be an open ending. It is an elegy, yes, but it could be Alec singing it. Since death is worth living, but love is worth waiting, maybe he survived and has to piece himself back together at James's side. Or maybe it's James who fell. You decide, but at least there's one thing we can all be sure about. Credits might roll, but Alec's legend never ends.
(Thank you so much for reading, and listening ♥️ I put a lot more energy into this post than I thought I would 😅)
