This book was everything I have come to expect and love from Jane Harper. I have heard a YouTuber describe her writing as simple and powerful. It doesn’t need fancy plot devices because it’s just a good mystery and I completely agree with that.

I finished my 42nd (and 43rd) book for #bookadayinMay! I both read and listened to The Dry by Jane Harper. It was a very good story. I'll give it four stars. I really enjoyed it. 😊⭐⭐⭐⭐❤ . . . . The mystery was REALLY good. I didn't have any solid ideas as to who the killer was until Falk figured it out. 😄❤ . . . . The audio performer, Stephen Shanahan, did a good job. Not great, but it was okay. I think I may give the audio three stars. There wasn't enough distinction between the voices in the dialogue portions of this story for me. Plus, there were lengthy pauses in a few inappropriate places. This was NOT a book I was able to listen to without reading along. (Not to mention that my edition is an American edition and I think the audio was for the Australian edition.) 😕⭐⭐⭐ . . . . The Survivors is the new book from Jane Harper. “Kieran Elliot’s life changed forever on a day a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences. The guilt resurfaces when he returns to his home town to help his struggling parents. When a body is discovered on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge...” Harper has given us another great story. This time the ocean and coast are the setting instead of the hot and dry Outback. There are secrets and lots of red herrings. (My guess of the killer was wrong 😑) Kieran was a tragic character. He wants to move on but all of the reminders make it difficult in addition to his father’s dementia. The ending is a bit open-ended, but it works here. This book releases in February but #BOTM members got it early 🙌🏻 Harper has become a favorite author and this is a page-turner. Happy publication date to Jane Harper for The Survivors! I managed to get my mitts on the e-book a couple of months ago but as usual, didn’t get round to reading it until recently. I’m a big fan of the author’s work having read and thoroughly enjoyed everything she’s written up until now so I was eagerly anticipating this novel. ⁣ ⁣ I’m happy to report it didn’t disappoint. The Survivors is one of the author’s stand-alones and focuses on a group of men and women in a small coastal community in Australia. We mostly hear from male lead Kieran as he continues to try and navigate his life with his wife Mia and his baby daughter following a family tragedy involving the loss of his brother, Finn and the disappearance of another young local girl during a violent storm.⁣ ⁣ Kieran’s guilt and the role he played in those disastrous events comes back to haunt him when in the present time a different young woman’s body is found on the beach. In order to solve the crime, questions start to be asked about the past and exactly what happened on that fateful night many years ago. How also does it connect with the death of a talented young artist and photographer and what secrets are about to be unearthed?⁣ ⁣ Like all of the author’s books I’ve read, this is a gripping tale with authentic characters and an intriguing plot. I loved that there was a fairly large cast of individuals to explore and they all felt very believable with their own fascinating back stories. I wouldn’t call the reveal a massive shock but it didn’t matter, it was wonderfully teased out and parts of it I really didn’t expect. ⁣ ⁣ If I had to rate this against Harper’s last book, The Lost Man, personally I enjoyed that slightly more but it doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a brilliant, very readable and exciting story. His father’s dementia has been deteriorating more quickly recently and thus they are moving house and sorting out stuff. Only shortly after they have arrived do they also meet their old friends: Olivia and Ash, now a couple, then also victims of that fierce storm which not only took Kieran’s brother’s life but also Olivia’s sister. And they meet Sean and his nephew Liam who lost his father and who still holds Kieran responsible for that. When the young waitress Bronte is found murdered on the beach, the memories of that unforgettable day resurface and all the emotions, too. Will twelve years after the disaster, which brought so much suffering and pain, the same happen again to that small community?

 I liked Janes Harper’s novels “The Dry” and “Lost Man” since she is brilliant at catching the atmosphere and transferring this in her novels. “The Survivors”, too, has a special ambiance which defines the novel. The small circle of characters who all share the memories of that disastrous day and who all, in their own way, still can feel the pain that is connected to the storm and its outcome. Thus, the murder case at hand quickly becomes much less interesting than the question if people are hiding something, if the narrative of the events has to be re-written.

 At first, I was misled by the title which I thought referred to the people who had survived the aforementioned storm, however, it is something completely different yet decisive for the plot. Even though the investigation on Bronte’s murderer seems not really to advance, the novel gets increasingly thrilling with more aspects of the storm day being evoked. Many characters act highly suspiciously which I totally adored since it made me spin one theory after another about the events. In the end, Harper provides a credible solution and no questions remains unanswered.

 It is the landscape and the people formed by it who move at their own pace and who make “The Survivors” a wonderful read. It is a novel about how you can survive when others have died and especially how you can live with the guilt of being a survivor. For some however, being alive does not mean having survived, it is a daily fight against death. For me, the strongest novel by the author so far.
