This scene...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Noa mourning his dad was so heartbreaking to see. I was expecting him to cry like a human would. But him kneeling and curling up like a ball, The way his eyes shift thinking and taking it all in and silently shedding tears was so impactful. The silence was loud! 💯
Turns out Owen did some research on how Chimpanzees understand the concept of death and how they mourn.
and it made the scene more heartbreaking! I love that they're giving alot of thought into bringing Noa to life. Its just perfect. 👌

Good news for animals in captivity in Canada!
Tumblr media
The Jane Goodall act was introduced to the Canadian senate originally in 2020 and again in 2022. It represents some of the strongest legislation for animal protection in the world for species and contains new legal protections for captive big cats, bears, wolves, seals, sea lions, walruses, certain primates, and dangerous reptiles, such as crocodiles and giant pythons. If it passes, the bill will:
Phase out elephant captivity in Canada. Elephants are complex and intelligent animals that require large social groups and often do poorly in captivity, so this would mean an effective end to the practice nation wide.
Ban new captivity at roadside zoos for big cats, bears, wolves, seals, sea lions, walruses, certain primates, and dangerous reptiles. No more private owners profiting off of wild animals kept in unethical conditions!
Require permits for individuals and organizations to acquire or breed big cats and other species.
Create a new designation for Jane Goodall Act ‘animal care organizations,’ including zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. An effective form of accreditation to make it easier to support appropriate care for captive animals.
It would also support action against wildlife trafficking and improving the conditions of animals currently in captivity. Read more about the act here.
As of June 8, 2023 the bill has passed its first vote in the Senate.

Clint Eastwood and Manis the orangutan in the role of Clyde on the set of the 1978 film Every Which Way But Loose.
Wisdom tells the value of intangible, heartfelt experiences over material possessions.
👍 Wisdom by Clint Eastwood
Don’t look for luxury in watches or bracelets, don’t look for it in mansions or sailboats,
luxury is laughter and friends, luxury is not being sick, luxury is the rain on your face,
luxury is hugs and kisses.
Don’t look for luxury in shops, don’t look for it in gifts, don’t look for it at parties, don’t look for it at events.
Luxury is being loved by people, luxury is being respected, luxury is having parents alive, luxury is being able to play with your grandchildren, luxury is what money can’t buy.
PS. I love his superb acting skills and the movies he has acted in. 🫶 Lan~*

An even broader investigation by James J. Lynch of actuarial and statistical data on victims of cardiovascular disease indicated that an astonishing percentage of the million or so Americans killed by heart problems each year have an underlying difficulty that seems to trigger their sickness: “lack of warmth and meaningful relationships with others.” On the other hand, research in Europe suggested that kissing on a regular basis provides additional oxygen and stimulates the output of antibodies. Closeness to others can heal. Separation can kill.
The cutting of the ties that bind can be fatal even in the wild. Jane Goodall, who has studied chimpanzees in the Gombe Stream preserve of Africa since 1960, saw the principle at work in a young animal named Flint. When Flint was born, his mother adored him. And he, in turn, doted on her. She hugged him, played with him, and tickled him until his tiny, wrinkled face broke out in the broad equivalent of a chimpanzee smile. The two were inseparable.
When Flint reached the age of three, the time came for his mother to wean him. However, since Flo, the mother, was old and weak and Flint was young and strong, this proved difficult. Flo turned her back and tried to keep her son away from the nipple, but Flint flew into wild tantrums, lashed about violently on the ground, and ran off screaming. Finally, a worried Flo was forced to calm her son by offering him her breast. Later, Flint developed even more aggressive techniques for ensuring his supply of mother’s milk. If Flo tried to shrug him off, Flint struck her with his fists and punctuated the pummeling with sharp bites.
At an age when other chimps have freed themselves from parental apron strings, Flint was still acting like a baby. Though he was a strapping young lad and his mother was increasingly feeble, Flint insisted that she carry him everywhere. If Flo stopped to rest and Flint was anxious to taste the fruit of the trees at their next destination, the hulking child would push, prod, and whimper to get her moving again. Then he’d climb on her back and enjoy the ride.
When shoves and whines didn’t motivate his mother to pick him up and cart him where he wanted to go, Flint would occasionally give the exhausted lady a strong kick. Although Flint was old enough to build a sleeping nest of his own, at night he insisted on climbing into bed with his mother. In the course of normal development, Flint should have turned his attention from Flo to the other chimps his age, forging ties to the superorganism—the chimpanzee tribe—of which he was a part. But he did not, and the consequence would be devastating.
Flint’s mother died. Theoretically, Flint’s instincts should have urged him to survive. But three weeks later, he went back to the spot where his mother had breathed her last and curled up in a fetal ball. Within a few days, he, too, was dead.
An autopsy revealed that there was nothing physically wrong with Flint: no infection, no disease, no handicap. In all probability, the youngster’s death had been caused by the simian equivalent of the voice that tells humans experiencing a similar loss that there’s nothing left to live for. Flint had been cut loose from his single bond to the superorganism, and that separation had killed him.
Social attachment is just as vital to human beings as it is to simians. Research psychiatrist Dr. George Engel collected 275 newspaper accounts of sudden death. He discovered that 156 had been caused by severe damage to social ties. One hundred and thirty-five deaths had been triggered by “a traumatic event in a close human relationship.” Another twenty-one had been brought on by “loss of status, humiliation, failure or defeat.” In one instance, the president of a college had been forced to retire by the board of trustees at the age of fifty-nine. As he delivered his final speech, he collapsed from a heart attack. One of his closest friends, a doctor, rushed to the stage to save him. But the strain of losing his companion was too much for the physician, and he, too, fell to the floor of the platform, dying of heart failure.

My very work in progress Vandermatthews Headcanon
Excerpts with asterisk taken from The Misadventures of Hosea and The Mustached Idiot; the rest have yet not been added to my fic
They have a nightly bedtime reading; they'll discuss what's going on in each chapter and will read paragraphs to each other; sometimes this on well into late night*
Neither of them can tolerate cold well, particularly Hosea, and a fire on every night; Dutch will spoon him to further keep him warm (I've made mentions of them not tolerating the cold as well as they did when they were younger but didn't touch too much onto them)
Dutch is very ticklish! Particularly his ribs/belly/waist, and Hosea will tickle him in public (or 'threaten' to) when he flirts in public or is being moody or being a general PiTA. He does his stoic face but eventually, he'll crumble. Unfortunately for him, Hosea isn't so much (I realize I'm sharing trade secrets here, no regrets, do what you want with them, mwah <3) * Since their bed was made only for one person, they are 'forced' to lay on top of each other (and can also be found lying by the bonfire), usually, Hosea lays on Dutch but doesn't always go that way*
Wolves wait to pounce the moment Dutch steps out of camp because of their attraction to his hair pomade, and the 30 pieces of beef, 10 fish, 20 squirrels stuffed in his pockets because he doesn't have a satchel.*
Reverend Swanson got them married
Hosea loves his back being rubbed, sides massaged, waist being held in those hold-you-close hugs and shoulders rubbed (this whole area will get him to melt like butter) and has a spot between his ear and jawline that when touched, gets him to his happy spot, but he's a happy chappy wherever Dutch touches him * (but I need to touch upon this more, pardon the pun!)
Dutch loves chest rubs, belly rubs, and there's a spot on his right hip that makes him squirm; he also loves to have his jaw/chin scratched and especially that cleft of his chin that he used to feel self-conscious about; scritching him here will elicit big manly little purry sounds from him * (though I have yet to get into the chin/jaw scritches in my story; it's in my head waiting to get out); he also likes to have his mustache/soul patch touched
They love a bit of roleplay; they'll create scenarios where they'll be acting out their first (a senario they've had involved Hosea being a bartender and Dutch is seeking a job as a musician there)
They take turns in deciding on a quiet place to read. Heartlands Overflow was their latest spot. They'll also do a spot of readin' at the camp, too).
Hosea can't stomach warm beer, Dutch will drink it cold or warm *
Dutch is the RDO equivalent of Jane Goodall; he'll happily socialize with other people's characters, and will also observe their goings-on (in a quiet spot if a quiet spot exists L) among them and reports on what he sees back at camp to get a better understanding of this strange world *
Dutch's favourite feature on Hosea is his eyes, hands and fingers and he tries to make eye contact with him as much as possible; he loves to hold and kiss his hands, and of course, be touched with them as much as possible; he also cannot leave his chest alone (so that's another favourite) and has a thing about hearing his heartbeat at night on those nights he lays on top of him, so maybe it's his heart that is his #1 <3 (but imo the whole man is his favourite part) * (but needs to be stated more!)
Among Hosea's favourite features on Dutch? His nose; he loves grabbing it, and kissing it, as well as his silly waist and the slight belly he's gotten from being looked after so well by him, and of cannot resist those locks that he can't resist touching in each chapter * (always needs to be stated more)
Dutch's favourite role is the Bounty Role because of the PEW PEW that's often involved but tied with Moonshine; he loves dancing like a fool and playing with the band, and the excitement of running 'shine like a proper degenerate; also loves the excitement of what the Trader Role can bring on hose trading run and now gets along with Cripps (they were ornery and antagonistic at the start until they learned they'll have mutual benefits from working with each other * (sort of touched on but needs to be touched on more);
Hosea's favourite role is the Collector role; it's generally the least problematic role between them both (and prob the most old-man-friendly activity) and they have an extensive selection of things they picked up (Hosea has issues with giving up the items they've collected); they also turn Collecting into a date and often will dress up more for this role than the others * (I need to write a chapter though of that dating!)
Hosea's favourite horse is his Turkoman stallion, Silver Dollar, but he has a bit of a fondness for Morgans, Standardbreds (particularly buckskin) and Belgian Drafts and will steal one if given the opportunity
Dutch's favourite is either Legend the dun Mustang mare, or Sienna the black Kladruber mare, or (sorry The Count but you're so little :D) or Winner Bells the black Standardbred mare who is a bit overprotective and known to kick friendly folk (and not so friendly folk)
Whenever Hosea is really angry at Dutch (which doesn't happen too often and when he does he doesn't stay mad at him for long); Dutch gives him a wide berth (might be canon?), he's which is so difficult because he's clingy and needy but will not cross that invisible barrier (I want to write a chapter on this but trying to think of something that would create this scenario; there will be of course a cavity-inducing reunion)
Dutch loves kissing Hosea in public; doesn't matter if it's in Smith's Saloon or wherever he'll just give that old man a big ol smooch on the lips (Hosea secretly loves it though he'll at times act embarrassed but doesn't exactly push away from it) *
Dutch is big into using the star/sun/moon as directional compasses; but doesn't always follow a waypoint; it seems to be in his coding but in my head he's just pigheaded about them and views them as a mere suggestion, which has gotten him, Hosea and his boys into trouble *
Hosea is sometimes exasperated by his husband's neediness and clinginess and needs to reassure him when he does need to get some breathing space; he respects this and will go off on little misadventures with their sons or on his own, often winding up in some sort of trouble, often Valentine with his study subjects and buddies (I often don't bring Hosea around big groups of people esp in Valentine because of the potential of an incident but I have a feeling he's fine with that), but always comes back and gives that idiot a big ol cuddle when he comes back
Hosea CANNOT resist his husband's little gestures of appeasement; a hand squeeze, a kiss of his hand, tugging at his curls, and . . . Puppy eyes, which he weaponizes *
Hosea loves it when Dutch grabs his ass but always 'shoos' him and acts annoyed
Dutch can't get enough ass grab and will pout if he doesn't get another squeeze
Nose boops are a daily occurrence, including nose-to-boops which sometimes occasionally result in a bloody nose but are a bit safer than forehead boops which have more than occasion left Hosea seeing stars
They really do do it on Fridays, for the most part (I keep them too busy to have too much intimate time, my bad)
'Sea doesn't go on every bounty hunt (he takes this time to Collector inventory, general inventory, get some personal space (difficult to obtain at times) and other odds and ends) but does go on every Collector, Trading and Moonshine run
The boys don't visit Harriet often because someone not name Hosea keeps getting sprayed by her
Both will gift each other with random, sometimes useless things; like I don't think Hosea really needs a donkey but Dutch will get him one anyway for a laugh and Hose would so say he doesn't need three asses (;D) (meaningful gifts are given aplenty too)
Dutch doesn't like to be violent against other people's kids (NPCs that comment on his appearance though . . . ) even when they bully him because he doesn't want to disrupt his relation with these strange characters; he's honestly too friendly with them and he'll tip his hat to the ladies and blow kisses to the guys (fuelling jealousy in Hosea)
One of those useless things? 'Sea has ordered an expensive mirror from France (that isn't too practical out on the range but there you go) because he gets a kick out of watching his hubby check himself out and then acting like he wasn't checking himself out in the mirror)
Hosea has a dry sense of humour *
Dutch will laugh at his own jokes
They both will feed each other bits of food on a fork
Dutch is the one who usually spoons Hosea but 'Sea will also spoon him to shake things up
Nicknames? Hosea nicknames Dutch his Beautiful Idiot, the Mustached idiot (and just idiot), Babygirl, Duchess; Dutch calls Hosea 'Sea in addition to Old Girl * (he also calls him Silver Fox but have yet to include that in my fic; I'm thinking of more nicknames for him too!)
Dutch despises rain but Hosea will take this time to wait it out with him and often plays with hair and writes in his journal during these moments
Both are rather useless at the cowboy thing; one gets dragged through the mud, and the other will go on a slaughter spree for being bumped. Cripps will now and then put them up at a local hotel to give them some more privacy (and to spare him hearing things)
They are of course both deeply affectionate towards each other; kisses, hugs, cuddles, and touches aplenty are given to each other (they touch each other a lot in my story but I want to go deeper into what touch and where affects them both; for examples touches to the vulnerable regions symbolize trust)

Kinich feels like such a contradictory character between his written character stories versus his in-game presentation that it's actually upsetting me ngl.
Oh, we're told he's a super strong warrior, but he gets injured offscreen during the team battle, loses offscreen during the match-ups, and is sent away on an errand when we go to the Night Kingdom. Super capable warrior, where??
He's positioned as Mualani and Kachina's friend in the archon quest, but argues against saving her from the Night Kingdom. Chasca of all people is shown to volunteer her assistance more, out of responsibility. However we're also told he's [spoilers] super fucking devoted to honoring friendship in his tribal quest and the traveler can call for his help anytime?? Poor Kachina didn't make the cut I guess.
Scanning the leaks, his past trauma and abuse at the hands of his father, the bullying from the Scion children, and any PTSD from dying in the Night Warden Wars will have 0 mention onscreen, for a very good while at least.
Then he's a Saurian Hunter willing to do anything for the correct "price" re: his character stories. He'll even ask compensation from the elderly and children! His services are avaliable for wetwork too. But jk not really, his trailer shows he has rather strict morals and doesn't kill just any Saurian with a pricetag. Apparently there's a difference between hunters and poachers, even when both are in it for the money. What, does he kill Saurians in an archon-honoring way? He won't [spoilers] take Trinidad's perspective to put down the Mountain King, despite the harm to local settlements and the own Suarian's suffering from abyssal corruption. For god's sake, he's hatching baby Suarian eggs in the web event. Stop being disingenuous and just make him Jane Goodall at this point.
(The jpn fanbase is calling him "mama" due to him waking the girls up on time for tournament and cooking their stew in that hoyoverse extra, which is turning out to be more accurate as time goes on lol)
I don't think there's anything wrong with a slightly-tweaked Thoma, in fact I think the roster needs it. I love male wife material! But trying to lump it together with the typical "stoic, rational man that outwardly appears cold-hearted" appeal, a dime a fucking dozen in hyv games, AND "assassin for hire" (because the Suarians are sentient okay, they talk in their own language and participate in society) just isn't working cohesively. In a better-written story, maybe an author could spend time fleshing out his personality, but Genshin quests concering playable characters just aren't that long or deep. And his voice count is abysmally low in the next archon quest too, and he's not there for half of his tribal act III quest. Meanwhile Mualani was stapled to our side in hers /salty
It kinda feels feel like they're prepping for less men in Natlan, so they shoved every trope they can into him to make it count. That meme of female characters on a conveyor belt to the finish line vs male characters doing hard gymnastics and jetpacking to get to the same place? Yeah, that's him. That they made Naruto's VA into a talking pet rather than another character that would sell like hotcakes to the fujos speaks volumes.
It's just... frustrating, because they picked a bunch of stuff to make him interesting but it feels haphazard in quality. Like, "here's your token boy specifically designed in a lab to appeal to teenage girls, now leave us alone to make waifu #36843."

@miniaturechildkitten Here are some documentaries I would recommend now. They're not all about celebrities, I went into another direction, but I'll explain some of my choices.
Tumblr media
This is one is the first part of a well known series. It's first installment was Seven Up and comprised of interviews with several children at the age of 7. Then, seven years later, they released another. And another one, seven other years later until those same children were adults in their 60s. It is absolutely fascinating to watch their evolution, especially since it's almost impossible not to form an attachment to them since we can see them initially as children. I found myself crying more than once because a lot of them will go through difficulties.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grey Gardens is another famous title that explores isolation and a codependent mother-daughter relationship. I Am Not Your Negro is about James Baldwin and explores race relations in America. Jane was the documentary that introduced me to Jane Goodall and particularly the first stage of her work with chimpanzees when she was young. McQueen is of course about Alexander McQueen. It traces his artistic career while also mapping the fashion industry in the 90s-2000s.
Tumblr media
Don't Look Back is interesting to watch not only as a music documentary, but also as one of the first examples of cinema verite in the North American sphere in the 60s. The director acts like a fly on the wall during some Dylan tours in Europe, showing us concert footage, but also Dylan and his entourage hanging around in hotel rooms and making me feel so bad watching Joan Baez pining after him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, I have to add a bit of spice. I'm really into true crime documentaries, especially if it's about a serial killer. I haven't watched anything recently, but these two stuck in my mind and are fascinating if you're interested (or might become) in New York in the 70s.

Jane Goodall and the Puerto Rican Parrot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr Jane Goodall, the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees, is an English primatologist, ethologist and anthropologist.
Acting on a friend's advice young Goodall telephoned Louis Leaky, the renowned Kenyan paleontologist and paleoanthropologist, to make an appointment to discuss animals, which she loved. Leakey, believing that the study of existing great apes could provide indications of the behaviour of early hominids, was looking for a chimpanzee researcher. He hired Goodall as his secretary and sent her to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to observe its chimpanzees in 1960.
Leakey arranged funding, and in 1962 sent Goodall, who had no degree, to the University of Cambridge. She was the eighth person to be allowed to study for a PhD at Cambridge without first having obtained a bachelor's degree.
Goodall's research at Gombe Stream showed that "it isn't only human beings who have personality, who are capable of rational thought [and] emotions like joy and sorrow."
Goodall remains the only human ever accepted into a chimpanzee society. She was the lowest-ranking member of a troop for a period of 22 months.
She is a vegetarian and advocates the diet for ethical, environmental, and health reasons. In The Inner World of Farm Animals (2009), Goodall writes that farm animals are "far more aware and intelligent than we ever imagined and, despite having been bred as domestic slaves, they are individual beings in their own right. As such, they deserve our respect. And our help. Who will plead for them if we are silent?" Goodall has also said: "Thousands of people who say they 'love' animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been treated so with little respect and kindness just to make more meat." In 2021, Goodall became a vegan and authored a cookbook titled Eat Meat Less.
Jane celebrated her 90th birthday on 3 April 2024.

Wilmon 44 & 45
44. What do they love about each other the most?
i think wille loves how simon understands him, or at least is open to understanding him, to the point that he's pretty much the only person around whom he can be himself, without simon judging him or expecting him to be "better" than he is (simon thinks he's more than good enough as he is). he loves simon's voice and musical talent, of course, and how he gives all of himself to help the people he loves, even to his own detriment. he loves how confident simon is, and how he doesn't take shit from anyone.
simon loves how earnest wille is. he loves that wille is the only person who will take care of him when he's running himself ragged trying to take care of everyone else. he loves how supportive wille is, whether over a choir solo or his political views. he loves that wille trusts his opinion even on situations outside his expertise, and trusts him to make his own decisions. he loves that he's the first person wille comes to for advice and comfort, even on matters unrelated to him, even though given his position in the social hierarchy, he doesn't need to involve simon at all-- but he still wants to.
("everything." that's the real answer to this question.)
45. How do they comfort each other when they are helpless to do anything about the situation?
so. let me get my nerd glasses on for a second. 8)
the concept of "love languages" is a very romantic notion but not really scientific at all. people are too complex and their personalities too plastic to reduce them to one or two ways of showing affection, and the research on this is pretty much inconclusive.
that said, fictional characters, especially ones with such limited canon as wille and simon have, are a bit easier to fit into a simple classification, and it can be fun to play with it. so i 10000% subscribe to the idea that wille's go-to (but not only!) form of showing affection is physical touch, and i think for simon it's an even combination of acts of service and words of affirmation. but they also have come to know the other, or at least the other's personality if not their life details, very well in the few months since they met in canon. so i think they have also come to know how to adapt to the other's needs regarding those love languages.
so basically, simon knows to give wille a hug or a caress when he needs support, on top of reassuring him with words. and wille knows to ask what simon needs, how he can help, and to show his support with actions on top of just offering physical comfort. it really is rather remarkable how we can already see this even in just the twelve episodes we've had in canon so far. and while the love languages might not be truly testable, reproducible, or falsifiable, it's fun to make such observations about fictional characters, in a "jane goodall studying chimpanzees in the wild" kind of way. ;)

WK S7 Prediction: Clever the Raven.
Episode 2 of the 7th season of Wild Kratts will be titled, Clever the Raven.
The Tortuga is parked in the Great North and some strange noises have Koki thinking it's time for a diagnostic overhaul. As they are near Little Howler's pack territory, the bros decide to try to find the wolf pack. Unexpectedly, a raven joins Martin and Chris on their adventure and the brothers soon learn about the incredible intelligence and ingenuity of the raven.
This episode was the first of the new season to be announced. I believe it was in an interview with Jane Goodall [yes, that Jane Goodall] a few weeks before Cats and Dogs started airing on television. They said they'd do eps. about the intelligence of ravens and crows so maybe they'll be doing a crow episode later on? My prediction of it being the Season 7 premiere seems to be wrong but eh, I'm not even that phased.
The geography of Little Howler's pack is so confusing. In Season 1 they're in the temperate forest, most likely in midwest North America. Then in Seasons 5 and 6 he apparently moved up north to Alaska?? Are they just gonna go with that retcon in S7, or are they going to have the "Great North" be a completely different turf than what we've seen? This has the same energy as the numerous Corpanga-origin retcons in Boy Meets World. Ugh I'm putting more thought into this than the show itself is doing, aren't I?
I'm kinda hoping that Little Howler ages here? I think there should be an episode in itself about the baby animals growing up and showing how that's a part of every creature's life cycle. The show has aged up its animal characters before like with T-Bone, Fluffy Flier, Baby Tooth, and Kid Musky, so I don't see a reason why they can't do the same with others.
The Molly of Denali crossover with Wild Kratts showed the Kratts looking for a wolf pack. Was this episode made specifically to pay tribute to that episode? Either way, I can't overlook this and it's probably a coincidence, but it's really nice.
Ok but seriously, this show is doing the Lord's work by showcasing the underrated and misunderstood genius/incarnates that are ravens. They've been known to have a very good memory, are extremely empathetic, and they're actually creature rescuers, help animals in need, or even protect humans. They're one of the most intelligent and dangerous avians in the creature world and don't act like this show isn't going to do them the justice they deserve! I'm probably getting my hopes up too high, but I think I'm going to have a very pleasant viewing experience with this.

☕️ intelligence/emotional capacity of animals (do you think our current understanding over or underestimates which creatures are capable of complex thought, self awareness, etc)
Okay this is something I am super passionate about. So for a long time researchers were in the underestimating category. However I also think some people, like the ppl with the talking buttons are in the overestimating category.
So for the first one science wasn't interested in animal intelligence for a long time bc it didn't seem like something worth studying. Many religions and philosophies will say humans are distinctly special from animals, and I have heard ppl say this a fair amount in biology and psychology classes. Which is just something that annoys me because it is a statement with no backing, and often times the line in the sand of what separates humans from animals will be surpassed by some animal and then ppl will come up with a new one (we've been "beholding a man" for a lot of human history now 🥱). One famous example is when Jane Goodall recorded Chimpanzees using sticks to fish for termites, which was evidence of tool use (considered at the time a unique and defining trait of humans), her mentor, paleontologist Louis Leaky said, “Now we must redefine tool, redefine man, or accept chimpanzees as human.”
However the beginning of a lot of animal intelligence research still involved testing animal's ability to act like humans, such as trying to get chimps to talk and act like humans. The most horrifying example being Gua who was a baby chimp raised by the Kelloggs at the same time as their own human child, to see if they could essentially raise a chimp into a human. I think a lot of studies about whether animals can talk have this issue. Even beloved ones like Koko the Gorilla, her signing is about as scientific as a Rorschach inkblot test, it often requires a lot of interpretation that cannot be confirmed in an experiment. We decided that something we do is the marker for intelligence, but just bc other animals don't communicate like we do or even think like we do does not mean that they aren't intelligent. Some people discount certain displays of animal intelligence as not intelligent bc they are seen as "intrinsic behavior", but we are social animals and count emotional intelligence as a type of intelligence. Is recognizing the emotions of others not intrinsic to social animals?
Each species has their own umwelt, which is the way they experience the world. We can't do some things such as sense electrical activity or see in infrared, inversely animals aren't going to talk or even display intelligence like we do. So researchers will have to get a little creative with their experiments of testing what animals do and don't know by taking a species' umwelt into account. Also somethings are just hard to define, like what is the line in the sand for complex thought? Self awareness also has that same issue. We inherently trust that other humans have self awareness and thoughts because we do. Behaviorists, scientists from a specific field of psychology will say that other people having thoughts or a mind is not something you can test in an experiment so we should not believe in it. You can't say other ppl have a mind bc you do, what if you are the ONLY person who has one (I'm not making this shit up my mentor in grad school was one of these ppl and this shit was unit one of the learning class). Cognitive psychology is the science of uncovering thought processes and while psychology has shifted in their direction, behaviorists still argue it's dumb. So yeah if ppl say that shit about humans you can imagine how hard it is to test in animals.
Anyways, some cool examples of potential complex thought are:
Moray Eels and Groupers working together to hunt: video of moray eel and grouper communicating and hunting together
Ravens can use water displacement to get something they can't reach: video
Irene Pepperberg's studies with African Grey Parrots are basically the best I've seen in terms of using human language to understand animal intelligence. Alex was taught various colors, shapes, material types, and count small thing and can then tell you about certain objects when prompted. What makes her interesting is the method for teaching the parrots was based not on humans but what parrot's umwelt and social behaviors. It was not recorded on camera but Pepperberg says one evening Alex asked her what color he was, implying self awareness: a long video on Pepperberg's experiments experiment comparing parrots to small children
There are also other phenomena observed in the wild such as animals such as apes, elephants, and cetaceans displaying mourning/funerary behavior over deceased animals they knew.
Another thing that people used to say is that humans were the only animals that had culture. Also, now being proven not to be true. I taught an animal behavior class and the textbook had an entire chapter on cultural transmission. Here's a cool video on one form of cultural transmission, whale songs
So, I don't think humans will ever sit down and have a conversation with a chimpanzee like a human, or they'll invent a way for dogs to speak to us in full sentences like the movie Up. However animals are more intelligent than they are often given credit for, there isn't a lot of evidence for animals being stimulus response machines as (especially behaviorists) previously thought.
Some good books if you are interested in the subject:
Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are and Mama's Last Hug by Frans de Waal (he has more books that are probably good but those are the two I've read)
Through A Window by Jane Goodall
Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin
What a Fish Knows by Jonathan Balcombe
Beyond Words by Carl Safina
Inside a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz
The Emotional Lives of Animals by Marc Bekoff

i can't even pick, i was everything, i was infinite imagination i was anything i wanted to be all the time; my friend would want to pretend to be space pirates and i would want to play sword and sorcery and i would be like "okay lets be space pirates and i'm an elf with magic but all the things that make me a magic elf are actually because i'm a pointy eared alien from a forest planet with weird technology"
or i would get my "little people" (gi joes and star wars figurines and for some reason zorro and the lone ranger and some other toys with a healthy component of animals thrown in) and i would have them act out so many adventures and stories
when i was an animal I was usually a puma, but there were hundreds of times i chose to be some other creature -- many aquatic creatures in pools of course. Sometimes mythical creatures or dinosaurs. Very occasionally an insect or bird
even like, mowing the lawn. I had a whole world built out where i was part of a space colony and our main food source was a sort of thick mossy algae we grew in giant patches and the scenario was we were getting attacked and i had to use the push harvester (lawn-mower) to get all the algae harvested so we could withstand a space siege, keeping cool under pressure while ignoring heavy fire -- and to keep from getting bored from that i would sometimes switch it to the Lawn Olympics, with imaginary commentators narrating my special techniques in amazement.
car rides were all kinds of things, but a recurring favorite (at night, especially foggy nights) was that I was in a fighter-scout submarine, exploring a sunken civilization (whether atlantean or alien varied) and also for a little while i would imagine being in a space ship cruising through the remains of a giant celestial cyborg, full of giant shards of circuit board all lit up..
My best friend and I rode bikes that were at various times speeder jets, and horses, mech suits, motorcycles, mad-max style jet ski things, mythical creatures, and our bodies as transformers (i mean they are mostly vehicles anyway, so that was a stroke of genius, playing transformers and when we "transformed" we just hopped on our bikes - chef's kiss)
any stick was a sword, a gun, a wizard staff, an elf's bow, a cyber spear (you know, where you can do computer things with it and also it shoots lightning, but you can still totally stab things with it)
i was a spy, i was a vampire, i was a robot. For a while I had this book about trolls
Tumblr media
which i used as a field guide to play troll-anthropologist, and i would pretend to infiltrate troll culture and learn their ways a la Jane Goodall / Dian Fossey.
i was a plethora of gods, godesses, cthulic nightmare creatures. i traveled through time, i crossed dimensions. I dueled dragons, i hatched dragon eggs, i hatched from a dragon's egg.. i made up sooooo many aliens. And super powers! So many. I wanted to be a werewolf so bad i researched old books and found a literal list of ingredients for a potion as part of a spell to turn into one (but I had to give up because i couldn't figure out how to ethically procure a human child's liver)
I used to put on a back pack and sunglasses and breathe through a bic pen cap and pretend the house was a shipwreck and i was scuba diving. The backpack can be weighted and tightened to feel like a pretty good scuba tank, sunglasses made passable diving goggles while creating a nice dim deep water effect when worn indoors, and the bic pen cap made a very satisfying darth vader-y scuba breathing noise and felt sufficiently like breathing from an air hose of some kind.
Anyway, the depths of my pretend game cannot be viewed through the lens of a simple poll
