Formula One is not the be all and end all that some people think.
It is not ‘less’ to go to a different category.
WEC, WRC, IndyCar, FE are just as established, recognised and respected as F1 and to use ‘maybe x driver should drop f1 and go to x category’ is not the hate flex you think it is - you are disregarding brilliant series that people have worked hard to excel in.
Is it bad for f1 drivers to go to these categories? Not at all. F1 just might not suit them and that’s okay, a different series may suit them better. But that IS NOT a reflection of the talent required to excel in those categories. They are not back up series for f1.
And to prove that here’s a (incomplete) list of drivers that have excelled in motorsports without being in F1 and are arguably some of the best drivers.
Sebastian Loeb (wrc)
Sebastian Ogier (wrc)
Thierry Neuville (wrc)
Scott Dixon (Indy)
Will Power (Indy)
Hello Castroneves (Indy)
Carlos Sainz Sr (wrc)
Mike Conway (wec)
Petter Solberg (wrc)
Josef Newgarden (Indy)
Jamie Whincup (Aus Supercar)
Valentino Rossi (MotoGP, wec, gt, wrc)

V8 Supercars teams chase Daniel Ricciardo for 2023 as Red Bull deal could open door for Aussie star
V8 Supercars teams chase Daniel Ricciardo for 2023 as Red Bull deal could open the door for Australian to make short-term return to his homeland  Garth Tander will not renew his deal with Triple Eight Race Engineering The team is owned by Red Bull, who have recently re-signed Daniel Ricciardo The eight-time Grand Prix winner will serve as the reserve driver in 2023  Supercars CEO Shane Howard said sport would 'roll out red carpet' for Ricciardo The Australian was axed by McLaren at the end of a dismal season  Click here for all your latest international sports news at Daily Mail Australia  By Dan Cancian For Daily Mail Australia Published: 09:22, 9 December 2022 | Updated: 09:22, 9 December 2022 Daniel Ricciardo could be in line for a sensational short-term switch to V8 Supercars next season after Triple Eight Race Engineering and Garth Tander surprisingly parted ways on Friday. The Red Bull-owned team said that Tander, a five-time Bathurst 1000 winner, had opted not renew his contract at the end of the season, just two months after triumphing at Mount Panorama alongside Shane Van Gisbergen. Team principal Jamie Whincup said the would speak with 'drivers both domestic and abroad to find the best fit to co-pilot' the number 97 car together with Van Gisbergen. Daniel Ricciardo could be in line for a sensational switch to V8 Supercars next year  He added the search for a replacement driver to share the seat at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 next year was already underway.  According to News Corp, Tander's unexpected departure could open the door for Ricciardo. The Australian doesn't have a seat on the grid for the 2023 Formula 1 campaign after splitting with McLaren at the end of a difficult season. The eight-time Grand Prix winner signed a deal with Red Bull to be their reserve driver next year and has vowed to secure a seat for 2024. The 33-year-old came through the junior ranks at Red Bull and raced for two years for the drink giant-owned Scuderia Toro Rosso - which has since rebranded to Alpha Tauri - before being promoted to Red Bull's main team.  Garth Tander (left) and Shane Van Gisbergen celebrate winning the Bathurst 1000 Team principal Jamie Whincup said Triple Eight Race Engineering were exploring several options to replace Tander ahead of next season  And his return to the Milton Keynes-based team could facilitate a switch to V8, as the energy drink giant's motorsport arms includes Triple Eight Race Engineering, which is branded as Red Bull Ampol Racing Supercars.  News Corp reported that Supercars have already sounded out Ricciardo about possible appearances at selected events in next year's championship. Fernando Alonso followed a similar path when he raced for McLaren in the Indianapolis 500 in 2017 and 2019, while under contract for the team's Formula One team.  Ricciardo will return to Red Bull next season as the team's reserve driver for 2023 In May, Supercars chief executive Shane Howard said the sport would be prepared to roll out of the red carpet for the former McLaren driver. 'If the opportunity presented itself to have Daniel on the grid as a wildcard or otherwise, we would absolutely want it to happen,' Howard told the Herald Sun. 'He is one of the best drivers and most recognised athletes in the world, it would be fantastic to have him race a Supercar at some point. 'We haven’t spoken to Daniel or his management and it would be in the hands of teams to align any opportunities that may present themselves in the future, but for sure it is something we would support.' Norwell a launch pad for cars and books Cars: Various Circuit: Norwell Motorplex, Queensland (2.1km)   With its seven, mostly tight, turns and just 2.1km to a lap, the Norwell Motorplex circuit lacks the warp speed-like iconic Mt Panorama or Phillip Island. Repco Supercars 2021 Season Preview
The 2021 Repco Supercars championship season kicks off this weekend with the Mt Panorama 500. This will be the first time since 2011 that a Supercars season hasn’t started in Adelaide, and the first time since 1998 without the famous circuit featuring on the calendar.
Adelaide is one of the many major changes to the Supercars calendar for this season. The COVID-19 pandemic saw Pukekohe, Gold Coast, Barbagallo, Symmons Plains, Melbourne and Winton all be excluded from the 2020 season, and the new year sparking their return to the calendar. Supercars are also only holding one endurance round this season, rather then the usual 3, only keeping the world famous Bathurst 1000, which is to be held on the 10th of October.
3-time Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin announced he is leaving the sport at the end of 2020 to head overseas and race Indycar, leaving an open spot at Dick Johnson Racing, which the 2-time Bathurst 1000 winner Will Davison has since filled. Fabian Coulthard also left DJR at the end of the 2020 season, with that seat being filled by Anton De Pasquale.
Tumblr media
Another change to a major team is in Tickford Racing, going from 4 cars to 3, and dropping Lee Holdsworth, who will come back for the Bathurst 1000 to co-drive with Chaz Mostert in the #25 Walkinshaw Andretti United entry.
Tim Slade will be making a return to the sport, with a brand new outfit in Blanchard Racing Team. Erebus Motorsport, Team Sydney, Kelly Grove Racing and Matt Stone Racing also see new drivers in their lineup, leaving Triple Eight Race Engineering, Team 18, Brad Jones Racing and Walkinshaw Andretti United all unchanged for the new season.
Two pre-season testing sessions took place at Queensland Raceway and and Winton Raceway, being topped by Zane Goddard and Will Brown respectively.
The 2021 season should see some more brand new winners, with the dominant Scott McLaughlin’s exit from the sport. Fans will have their eye on Cameron Waters, who snuck into 2nd place in the championship at the end of last year, as well as Chaz Mostert, Will Davison, Anton De Pasquale, and of course the pair of Red Bull’s in Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen.
Tumblr media
7x Supercars champion Jamie Whincup announced that 2021 will be his last full-time season. After making his debut in 2003, Whincup won’t be leaving the sport, taking over Roland Dane, who is the team principal and co-founder of Triple Eight Racing.
2021 is set to be an exciting and competitive season, with the first of 12 rounds kicking off this weekend.

Ferrari Picks up Win at Bathurt 12 Hour Race
Ferrari wrote another page in its legendary history in GT racing, taking the Bathurst 12 Hour for the second time. This is one of the most difficult races in the world, held on the 6.2 km Mount Panorama track in New South Wales, Australia. Succeeding in the undertaking along the up and downhills of the “Blue Hell” was factory Ferrari driver, Toni Vilander, with Australian Melbourne natives Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, who took turns at the wheel of the Maranello Motorsport 488 GT3.
A Close Fight
At the finish, the Ferrari was more than a lap ahead of the nearest contenders, the Competition Motorsports Porsche driven by Calvert-Jones-Long-Lieb-Campbell, but the final standings is not faithful to the real situation, which was an extremely heated battle from the first lap until 50 minutes from the end. The Ferrari of the Mark Coffey’s team, the only one on track, was involved in overtakes and counter-overtakes in a three-way battle between the Baird-Van Gisbergen-Engel Mercedes and the Porsche that later finished second. It was a close fight with the Mercedes hitting the Ferrari in the initial stages, earning a drive-through penalty.
Accident
It was Shane Van Gisbergen who made life simpler for Jamie Whincup in the final stages of the race, losing control of his Mercedes as he attempted to make up ground on the Ferrari and crashed violently just into the last hour. Whincup, in his first race aboard a Ferrari, thereby managed his lead which, with the main rivals out, was more than a lap over the Porsche. For the Australian, Vilander and the 488 GT3, this is the first win at the Bathurst 12 Hour. For Maranello Motorsport and Craig Lowndes, on the other hand, it is the second win in four years. In fact, in 2014, the first victory ever arrived in the Australian marathon with Lowndes, Mika Salo, Peter Edwards, John Bowe and the 458 Italia GT3. This year’s race was witnessed by a record crowd with over 40.000 spectators over the three days of the event.
Toni Vilander: “Being able to win such a difficult race on the first attempt makes me proud. Everything was perfect right from the start of the weekend. The race was very close but my teammates, the team and the car were simply unbeatable today. I think the 488 GT3, designed by Ferrari and developed with Michelotto, currently represents the state of the art in GT racing”.
