Após voltar à ativa em 2006, deixando para trás um hiato de 13 anos, os suecos do Treat lançaram dois ótimos álbuns de estúdio, "Coup de Grace" (2010) e "Ghost of Graceland" (2016), além do ao vivo, "The Road More and Less Travelled" (2017). Eis que o mais novo capítulo da fase pós-retorno, "Tunguska", saiu na sexta-feira (14 de setembro), também pela italiana Frontiers Records. Seu curioso título faz referência à grande explosão provocada pela queda de um asteróide próximo ao rio Tunguska, na Sibéria, em 30 de junho de 1908. Metafórica e artisticamente, porém, representa a última peça do quebra-cabeça a ser encaixada após o reencontro da banda, nas palavras do guitarrista, produtor e membro fundador Anders Wikström.

A primeira música, "Progenitors", começa com uma introdução climática, para não dizer soturna, que parece ter sido feita sob medida para ser a faixa de abertura também dos shows da nova turnê, antes de desaguar em uma batida marcial pela bateria de Jamie Borger e nas cortantes guitarras de Wikström. Também conta com refrão, backing vocals, riff e solo matadores. Dona de uma levada mais Hard/AOR, "Always Have, Always Will" me fez lembrar do Europe em alguns momentos. É, de fato, uma das melhores músicas do play. Sem falar que o vocal de Robert Ernlund soa até um pouco parecido com o de Joey Tempest. Mesma impressão, aliás, causada por "Riptide", que vem mais adiante. 

"Best of Enemies" retoma o peso da primeira faixa e traz como destaque a guitarra de Wikström. Em seguida, "Rose of Jericho", o segundo single do trabalho, apresenta um ritmo mais cadenciado. Conta com ótimo refrão, belas harmonias, melodias e solo inspirado de Wikström (confira o lyric video ao final do texto). Com refrão grudento, "Hearthmath City" é um empolgante Hard Rock, que desafia o ouvinte a ficar com os pés parados. "Creeps" é, por sua vez, um Hard mais direto e não apresenta tantos corais e backing vocals como verificado em outras faixas do disco. 

Escolhida como primeiro single, "Build the Love" (cujo clipe também pode ser visto abaixo) cumpre bem a sua função de carro-chefe do álbum. Possui riff e refrão que colam na cabeça de imediato. Em "Man Overboard", os teclados e sintetizadores de Patrick Appelgren ganham protagonismo, assim como o marcante baixo de Pontus Egberg (King Diamond, ex-The Poodles), nesse que é seu primeiro disco de estúdio com o Treat.

Já "Tomorrow Never Comes" é daquelas músicas para se ouvir com os  isqueiros...ops, com os celulares erguidos nos shows. É uma bela balada com destaque para os teclados de Appelgren, ainda que Wikström brilhe nos solos de guitarra. A edição japonesa do álbum traz uma versão acústica da faixa como bônus. E aqui vale uma ressalva. A Frontiers bem que poderia dar um tempo nessas versões desplugadas (ainda mais de uma faixa já presente no disco), algo que tem sido corriqueiro nos mais recentes lançamentos da gravadora. Uma canção inédita ou um cover (nem que fosse de um clássico da própria banda) cairiam melhor. 

"All Bets Are Off" descarrega logo de cara um riff pesadão e mescla momentos mais melódicos. Por fim, "Undefeated" é mais cadenciada, sem obviamente abrir mão de um ótimo e marcante refrão, e fecha bem o disco. Com "Tunguska", seu oitavo registro de inéditas, o Treat oferece a seus fãs e de Melodic Rock em geral um trabalho coeso, que mantém o padrão de qualidade dos seus últimos lançamentos. Grandes canções, riffs e solos inspirados, melodias espalhadas por todos os lados e excelentes arranjos, que o credenciam como um dos grandes álbuns de 2018.

AUTUMN'S CHILD signs world-wide record deal minus Asia; release date for "Zenith" set to January 14th, 2022!

Mikael Erlandsson needs no further introduction when it comes to melodic rock.

He has released six successful solo albums and a lot of titles with groups like Phenomena, Salute among others. Between 2006-2018 Erlandsson fronted the Swedish super group Secret Service which he toured with live all over the world.

Together with the fantastic guitar player Andy Malecek from the successful German hard rock band Fair Warning he founded the band Last Autumn's Dream in 2003 which also featured Ian Haugland, Mic Michaeli and John Leven of Europe fame at the time. The self-titled debut album was produced by Claes-Åke Andreasson Cand became a great success.

Last Autumn’s Dream went on releasing another 14 albums with different line ups including great musicians like Jamie Borger (Treat) and Marcel Jacob (Talisman). They toured Japan, England and Germany but decided to take a break in 2018.

Shortly after, Erlandsson founded the group AUTUMN’S CHILD. Their self-titled debut album was released in January 2019 through AOR Heaven feat. Jona Tee on keyboards (H.E.A.T), Robban Bäck, former drummer of Eclipse (Sweden) and currently in the line-up with Swedish rock band Mustasch, Claes Andreasson of Swedish Westcoast/AOR band Heartbreak Radio who also produced the first Autumns Child album together with Mikael Erlandsson. Guitars come courtesy of Pontus Åkesson (Moon Safari).  In 2020, the group released the sophomore album "Angel's Gate".

January 2022 sees Autumn's Child returning with album 3, "Zenith", this time via Pride & Joy Music, which once again features Michael Erlandsson on vocals, keyboards & guitars, Pontus Åkesson on lead guitar, Robban Bäck on drums, Claes Andreasson on piano and Magnus Rosen on bass. Guests include Jona T. (Heat) with a keyboard solo on “Emergency”, Sayit Dölen on rhythm guitar on “High On Love”, Martin Olsson on bass on "Angel Of Danger", "Evangeline", "Love Is A Fighter" & "Nightingale", Anna-Mia Bonde on background vocals on “Emergency” and Roberth Nygren on acoustic guitar on “Heaven Can Wait”.

“Zenith” was produced by Erlandsson & Claes Andreasson, mixed and mastered by Mikael Andersson at Soundport Studios, Sweden; drums recorded by Mikael Andersson at Soundport Studios.

TALISMAN, the band founded and created by the late Marcel Jacob in 1989, has written, produced and recorded a new song titled “Never Die (A Song for Marcel)” for their fallen brother who took his own life 10 years ago on July 21, 2009.

What will your city's weather feel like in 60 years?

In many urban areas, the researchers from the University of Maryland, North Carolina State University and the National History Museum of Denmark at the University of Copenhagen found “substantial differences” between probable future climate and even the best scenario. That means that by 2080, many cities will probably experience “novel climates with no modern equivalent.”

According to the researchers’ interactive map, if emissions are not cut and climate change continues as it is, by 2080, summers in New York will feel like those of Jonesboro, Arkansas: an average 9.1 degrees Fahrenheit warmer and 20.8% drier.

If we cut emissions and enact policies that tackle climate change, the change won’t be nearly as extreme. By 2080, summers in New York would feel more like those of Lake Shore, Maryland: about 4.4 degrees warmer and 9% drier.

Nearly all cities in the eastern United States, including Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, would have climates much more similar to those of cities hundreds of miles away to the south and southwest.

It’s not just the East Coast that could change. The Northeast would be more like the humid parts of the Midwest or southeastern United States. Western cities would be more like the desert Southwest. Cities in Florida would experience summers more like what parts of Mexico has today. San Francisco would have the climate of Los Angeles: 7 degrees warmer and 40% drier.

The change could be particularly problematic in the West, where the study shows that the average distance between cities’ future climate and current “climate analogs” might be shorter.

Changes in elevation show just how drastically different the climate could be in the future.

Take Denver, elevation 5,280 feet: The “Mile-High City” is known for its comfortable mountain climate and it depends on tourism featuring winter sports like skiing. But by 2080, according to the study, Denver’s climate would be around 9 degrees Fahrenheit warmer and more like that of the Texas Panhandle city of Borger, elevation 3,077 feet.

Climate change planning is well underway in Denver, according to Tom Herrod, a program lead with the Department of Public Health & Environment. The city has a goal to reduce carbon emissions 80% from 2005 levels by 2050. Denver also has done its own climate modeling to create a climate action plan, and the numbers in the new study look similar to those results, Herrod said.

City officials use data sets like these to look at how they should improve building codes and to make sure they aren’t just energy-efficient but have the proper air quality inside.

“It’s really about adaptation planning and getting as much of the city prepared as possible,” Herrod said.

Not a lot of Denver residents have air conditioning, but if the city’s climate becomes like Texas’, that will need to change, and residents will need to prepare.

“We love seeing studies like these because it’s a really good way to bring climate change in front of people,” Herrod said. “This really will impact people in their daily lives.”

Kristie Ebi said more cities are going to be proactive and think about climate change and its impact on infrastructure.

“Buildings in Chicago are built for cold, for example, not heat. There are so many places without central air, and it is not cheap to put in and not cheap to run, and that’s just the start of planning that will need to happen,” said Ebi, who was not involved with the new study but who looks at the impact of climate change on health as a professor at the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health.

Temperature changes will do more than make summers extremely uncomfortable for people who are used to milder temperatures. The changes will hurt economies and affect such industries as farming and tourism.

Ebi said city health departments need to be thinking about increases in vector-borne diseases, heat-related deaths, allergies and asthma. Worker productivity will fall for those who work outside, and Little League teams will have to change their seasons to avoid the higher temperature.

“This impacts a lot of lives in lots of ways — and ways people may not be thinking of with these shifts,” Ebi said. “Mapping like this is really helpful because it helps people understand how much their own cities will have to adapt.”

Urban populations are considered highly sensitive to climate change, the study said. Because most people live in cities, the authors wanted to show people what climate change could mean for them in a real and concrete way.

Lynda Walsh, a professor at the University of Nevada, Reno who has written about impactful ways of communicating about climate change, said she likes this approach.

This approach “doesn’t sentence its viewers to climate doom; rather, they’re invited to envision a city they have heard of and perhaps even have visited,” Walsh said in an email. “This approach has the potential to spark conversation and creative ‘what if we… ‘ responses, rather than hopeless resignation to a global scenario that’s beyond any one community’s control.”

Walsh said the authors are right to point out that the climate-analog approach needs further testing to see if this form of communication works, but, Walsh said, “to a rhetorician of climate, at least, who cares most about promoting democratic deliberation and policymaking around the issue, (the researchers’) analogical approach is really promising.”

“The good news is, these are projections. Adverse consequence doesn’t necessarily have to occur if we take action,” University of Washington’s Ebi said.

She cites the time when Mothers Against Drunk Driving became a popular group advocating for changes in drunken driving laws.

“A small group of very angry mothers changed all the laws in the United States,” Ebi said. “It is possible to make rapid change in short periods of time. We need the collective action and individual action and change. This is possible.”

Building on the success of their last two albums, 'Coup de Grace' (2010) and 'Ghost of Graceland' (2016), which were both released after the band’s reunion in 2006, Treat's return has been more than welcome by fans and critics alike. They now have a brand new album out called 'Tunguska'. Released on Friday it is packed with riveting rockers and seductive, soul searching melodic rock songs, on a wave of newfound creativity and high  anticipation from their fanbase.

But what is 'Tunguska'? I hear you ask. Guitarist, producer and founding member Anders Wikström says, “The album title is a reference to a mysterious large explosion that took place in Siberia in 1908, but metaphorically and artistically, 'Tunguska' represents the last piece of the puzzle to be put in place since the band’s reunion. It highlights the unique musicianship we have developed together over the years in the creative songwriting process, but also illustrates how we want our albums to sound and feel in the 21st century.”  

Treat's current lineup includes Robert Ernlund (vocals), Anders Wikström (Guitars and backing vocals), Patrick Appelgren (keyboards, guitar and backing vocals), Jamie Borger (drums), and bass player Pontus Egberg (King Diamond).

Anders Wikström says, ”My goal has always been to capture the band in the studio when we can reflect what we are like at a live performance peak. That´s why we did not continue touring for another extended period on the back of the last album and went into the new album writing and recording process instead. When our fans hear 'Tunguska', this decision will speak for itself. I truly believe this is Treat's finest hour! And that goes for every single member of the band! Damn proud!”

The band is truly at the top of their game and songs like the outstanding lead single 'Build The Love', or rockers like the fabulous album opener 'Progenitors', 'Always Have, Always Will', and 'Rose of Jericho' stand out as future live staples in the band’s repertoire.

Anders continues, ”We feel we are a better band nowadays, both as songwriters and live performers, matured just like a great red wine! After living with the album for some time, I find myself jumping in and out randomly on my choice for favourite songs and for some reason that has never been the case before. To me that's what a real album is about and what makes it worth working day and night to compete.”
