New book finished like, 30 minutes ago? Ish? Anyways, here's the rating!

5. The Assassin Game by Kristy McKay: 8.5/10

This was mainly a reread

I've had this book for several years, couldn't remember much outside of the basic synopsis

Fun read

A stupid game of mafia or Assassin or whatever gone wrong. Went from fun stupid pranks to "kill" others in the game, turned into people actually getting hurt and nearly dying.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the love interest, cause he just forces his way into the main girl's life again (childhood friends) and then forces his way into the game cause he wanted to be liked

Bruh

Also, didn't like how manic the girl got near the end, but I guess paranoia, being forced to take strong pills to try and calm you down, and constantly being told you're sick/wrong would do that to a person

Overall, not bad, fun reread, highly recommend

I've made it my mission to read all of the unread books on my shelves before I buy more, so I've been reading a lot recently while waiting for classes to start in the mornings, and have gone through several books in like, 2 weeks? So I decided to share the book list and my rating of each book and why. I'll try not to get too descriptive in case of spoilers (I know at least one of my mutuals is starting the series of one of these books) so yeah.

Keep in mind, I rate my books loosely purely based on how much i enjoyed it, so please don't come for me. Most of these are high ratings.

1. Unbirthday by Liz Braswell: 9/10

I love Alice in Wonderland, and Disney has been releasing these twisted books of how things would have gone if something was different

Really interesting

Admittedly difficult to follow the logic at times, but its Alice in Wonderland. It's expected. It worked really well with the story itself. So I see no fault in that

Honestly surprised by how good it was

2. Five Total Strangers by Natalie D. Richards: 10/10

Loved it

Basically was a "What could go wrong when 5 strangers are stranded at an airport cause of a blizzard and rent a car together?"

Anything that could go wrong, went wrong

Really fun to read, read it in a day, could barely put it down to go to class

Flat out kept me on the edge of my seat, was entirely betrayed by the character I thought I could trust

3. Gone Too Far by Natalie D. Richards: 8.5/10

Basically a "if given the chance to out the bullies and have them get what they deserve" sotuation, but taken too far

Not the ending I was expecting

Loved the romance in it too

Very cute

So glad the guy didn't just drop the main girl immediately upon figuring out what was happening

4. The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes: 8/10

Book two of The Inheritance Game series

Loved the mystery

Romance is good (although I prefer the other brother in the love triangle, but that's just me)

If it weren't for a specific thing in the book that is a huge running theme throughout said book that reminds me of another book series and why I couldn't read that series, it would be higher on the list

It sounds like “Belfast” director Kenneth Branagh and the film’s Ciarán Hinds will be at the Oscars. It was unclear if they could attend after both contracted COVID at the BAFTA Awards in London. “I know Ciarán is all clear,” Caitriona Balfe told Variety before heading into the Chanel and Charles Finch’s annual pre-Oscar dinner. “I think [Branagh] is, too. I think he’s good.”

In spite of a venue switch due to the pandemic and a missing honoree due to COVID-19, the Oscar Wilde Awards still maintained its usual Irish charm as it kicked off at the Wilshire Ebell Theater instead of its usual hub at emcee JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions in Santa Monica, Calif.

Before the awards ceremony began, guests, who were required to be vaccinated to attend (both shots and a booster) mixed and mingled, toasted Oscar WildeTini and Irish Gimlet cocktails, and noshed on a variety of eats, including fish and chips and vegan enchiladas.

“This is an incredibly formal [ceremony], very serious, and no one takes a risk,” the “Star Trek” director, who was dubbed an “Honorary Irishman” at the 2010 awards, joked about the vibe of the event before heading inside. “I think you can see it’s fun. And I think after a couple years of not being able to do this, a lot of people are feeling a relief to get to sort of hang out again and toss back some Jameson and Guinness and enjoy the night.”

Adam McKay, Jamie Dornan, Dónall Ó Héalai and Kenneth Branagh were all honored at the event. Branagh was recently diagnosed with COVID-19 and couldn’t attend, but did send in a video acceptance speech.

Dornan told Variety that he’s keeping his fingers crossed that his “Belfast” co-star will be able to attend the Oscars on Sunday.

“We’re all gunning for him and hope he can make it,” Dornan said. “He and Ciaran Hinds are both in the same situation. So hopefully, he will pass the fitness test and we have them with us. I can’t even imagine going on Sunday night without those guys.”

Inside the event, Dornan kept the crowd laughing as he accepted his award, even pulling out a pair of silver handcuffs, Christian Grey-style. “I’ll start with something you’re familiar with,” he quipped. He went on to take a more serious turn, getting emotional as he called working with Branagh in Belfast, “the greatest honor of my career.”

Mary Steenburgen introduced McKay and dished about their best moments working together on “Step Brothers,” praising the director, too.

“The fact that somebody can be so outrageously funny, and still have the heart and the passion to make films about the environment, about hypocrisy, who shine the light on the injustices in the world the fact that all of these things are in this man’s absolutely brilliant career makes him a rare, and Irish, and loud and sometimes obscene bird,” she said.

As Ó Héalai accepted his “Wilde Card” award, he recalled how he “nearly quit acting” and moved from New York City to Buffalo, N.Y. He was later sent the script for “Arracht,” which changed his life. “Buffalo taught me what can come into your life if you stop chasing things,” he told the crowd, later adding that an Irish proverb continues to ring true for him in his career. “It’s in each other’s shelter that we survive and thrive as people.”

Ironically, as “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green presented Ó Héalai with his award, he said the “Arracht” star helped him push forward when he was a struggling filmmaker in New York with a ton of student debt. He told Green to keep going and that he was “so close.” He was so right. —Brandi Fowler

JAMESON “JAMIE” WARD [COLE SPROUSE] is a JUNIOR at Broadripple Academy. He is 17 years old, from PRINCETON, WV and has been at Broadripple Academy for 3 years.

BASICS.

Sad-eyed goblin that’s been haunting the school for 3 whole years.

Extremely repentant white trash hillbilly.

He’s a scholarship student with no ties to the school whatsoever. In fact, his attendance at Broadripple is a mystery in and of itself since he refuses to be forthright about where he comes from because then he might have to explain the bruises he comes back to school with every Summer.

Loner, outcast, loser and most recently, satanist. Jamie’s got a pretty bad reputation to go with that chip on his shoulder.

Saving himself for satan now that he’s determined that God is an asshole.

KNOWN FACTS.

He’s very smart. There’s no contesting Jamie's academic prowess even if one really wanted to but his intelligence isn’t effortless. Although he tries his best to look like he naturally belongs at Broadripple, physically and mentally, the sheer amount of effort that goes into performing is unmissable. He’s a try-hard, but it works for him-- at least where it matters.

He often shows up where he’s uninvited like parties, the wrong bathroom, seemingly empty classrooms... just everywhere, like a shadow. There’s a guarantee he’ll be there if there’s food but he doesn’t drink or do drugs.

He’s unpleasant to be around-- not in a way where he’s purposefully causing mischief, but he’s always tired, always cynical and has an uncanny ability to make any situation awkward. Luckily, he spends all his time sequestered away in his room or at the library.

Almost always in uniform, the few times he’s been seen with civies on are a dead give-away of his family’s status when all he owns are rejects from the bargain  bin. He always tries to hide how devastatingly poor he is, even though there’s no missing the holes in his socks or his secondhand books.

Tries not to sound southern but he did grow up in rural West Virginia.

The only time he appears to willingly go outside is to skulk around the premises to court any stray cats or take photos of trees.

CONNECTIONS.

SAVIOR (Frenemy)- In the light of recent accusations and swift dodges, this person has doubled down on trying to get Jamie onto the path of righteousness. This could be about God, a not-friendship where they’re trying to pressure Jamie towards being forthright about his living situation or just trying to get him on a regular sleeping schedule. One way or another, they’re determined to fix him in some way and he hates it. [Faith Mckay]

BELIEVER (Friend)- The closest person has to a friend in recent days. They’re bonded by their mutual infatuation with the weird and unusual and only that but it’s a strong enough passion to bridge the gap between their vastly different social circles. Long nights of research, studying and enthusiastic recants of articles found online, they’re sluts for Satan together. [Raquel Torrance]

IF YOU CAN’T HANG (Ex-Friends)- Jamie and this person used to be friends during first year-- or at least the closest thing that Jamie ever had to a friend at Broadripple. It was a fork in the road where Jamie fell wayside as a casualty of bullying and peer pressure where they stopped being friends. There’s tension between them and although Jamie tries to play it cool, there’s betrayal in his eyes whenever they meet theirs in the hallway. [Jimmy Ainsworth]

DO I WANNA KNOW? (Friend?)- It’s weird because Jamie has never shown real interest in dating but it’s even weirder between these two because last year, he finally noticed them trying. They’re pleasant enough to each other that it feels unjust to be cruel to them but the number of close calls is only ramping up with each passing year and Jamie’s pretty confident that there was something truly unfortunate about junior year that might force him to finally make a decision. I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU (Bully) - That pompous dick who encompasses all the affluent christian white privilege that Jamie openly despises. They’re Jamie’s dirty rich foil and tormentor since day one. This person is the He-Man to Jamie’s Skeletor.[Damian Fitzgerald]

DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP (Tutor) - There ain’t no rest for the wicked and Jamie’s a broke ass bitch whose body isn’t worth its weight in pennies. His brain, however, is worth a lot and this person pays up for help and tutoring no matter how much they may or may not resent him. [Katherine Bishop]

CREEP (Frenemy) - This person is obsessed with Jamie. He is their prince of darkness and they revere his Bad Boy aesthetic. He’s broken, bruised and obviously in desperate need of someone and that someone can definitely be them. They love Jamie and think he can do no wrong. Jamie, despite his lack of friends, isn’t really eager to be theirs but is too much of a pussy to get rid of them. They often get Jamie into more trouble than he wants but something about seeing someone more pathetic than he is makes him pity them and try to help. [OPEN]

SECRET (Frenemy) - Due to Jamie’s lurking nature, he tends to see a lot of shit he’s not supposed to-- including this person’s dirty laundry. Whatever it is, they don’t want it to get out but Jamie’s not above using it as leverage in case of emergencies. [Andrea Pearson]

Witch-themed romance reads, some past, some future, with a couple of books from other genres.

Bewitched, an anthology by Lisa Higdon, Susan Krinard, Amy Elizabeth Saunders, and Maggie Shayne, whose novella Everything She Does Is Magick has a Sleeping Beauty-esque trio of aunts furtively wielding their magic to ensure the unwitting hero’s virginity stays intact until such a time as he and their protegee will fall for each other. Whether you’ll enjoy it probably depends on your feelings about the premise and if the enemies to lovers interaction between the heroine and hero strikes you as hilarious or immature.

Eternity by Maggie Shayne “Three hundred years ago, Raven St. James was accused of witchcraft...Only one man tried to free her from the hangman's noose--Duncan, the town minister, who died trying to save her. Three hundred years later, the accused witch still lives and longs for her love...At last, after centuries of loneliness, Raven has found her precious Duncan. But as he awakens to the passion of his past life, so too does the evil that tore them apart. Now Raven and Duncan must prove their love for all eternity.” (TBR)

The Witch and the Warrior by Karyn Monk, a medieval set in Scotland. “Suspected of witchcraft, Gwendolyn MacSween has been condemned to being burned at the stake at the hands of her own clan. Yet rescue comes from a most unlikely source. Mad Alex MacDunn, laird of the mighty rival clan MacDunn, is a man whose past is scarred with tragedy and loss. His last hope lies in capturing the witch of the MacSweens--and using her magic to heal his dying son. He expects to find an old hag....Instead he finds a young woman of unearthly beauty. There's only one problem: Gwendolyn has no power to bewitch or to heal. Now she must pretend to be a sorceress--or herself perish.” (TBR; have enjoyed a couple of non-medieval historicals by this author.)

A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses by Molly Harper. “Nola Leary would have been content to stay in Kilcairy, Ireland, healing villagers at her family’s clinic with a mix of magic and modern medicine. But a series of ill-timed omens and a deathbed promise to her grandmother have sent her on a quest to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to secure her family’s magical potency for the next generation. Complication One: the artifacts [she needs to unearth] are lost somewhere in what is now Jane Jameson's book shop. Complication Two: her new neighbor, Jed Trudeau, who keeps turning up half naked at the strangest times, a distraction Nola doesn't need.” (Currently reading.)

Met By Moonlight by Rosemary Edghill. “When modern day witch Diana Crossways plunges back to 1647 England, she learns that a mysterious man she saw in Salem, Massachusetts is a notorious witch hunter. He holds the power of life and death over Diana--but she also inflames his desire.” (I gave this one a B a few years back.)

Magical Memories by Donna Fletcher. Contemporary set in Scotland. “As one of the world’s most powerful witches, Tempest possesses the ability to do anything - except men her own broken heart. Many years ago, her lover was corrupted by his own magic power, and she was forced to imprison him in a mystical limbo. Unable to forgive herself, Tempest has never allowed another man to get close to her... until now. While navigating her car through a fierce blizzard, Tempest accidentally hits Michael Deeds, injuring his leg. [At her home, where she has taken him to heal, the two begin to fall for each other.] But is Michael the new love she’s been searching for - or someone from her past she dared not believe she’d ever see again?” (TBR)

Bewitching by Jill Barnett. Regency. “Alec, Duke of Belmore, did as he pleased - and he wanted to marry the beautiful, bubbly girl who had positively bewitched him: Joyous MacQuarrie, who had appeared from nowhere and turned stately Belmore Park upside down with merriment and mischief. It hardly mattered that her Scottish bloodline was shrouded in mystery. But Alec's heated desire turned ice-cold when he discovered that this winsome lady was, in fact, a witch --- whose powers of white magic were not always perfectly under control ...Too late, Joy knew she was desperately in love and that nothing could stop the course of their destiny --- the scandal threatening to destroy her and the passion that held them both spellbound in a forbidden, irresistible match.” (This charmed an A from me and became an instant favourite a long time ago.)

Thornyhold by Mary Stewart. From a different period than her wonderful vintage romantic suspense, this book has a much subtler, quieter flavour, being sweet and gentle instead of tense and gothicky. The romance is secondary. “To Cilly, the house, deep in the wild wood, was an enchantment, left to her by the cousin whose occasional, magical visits had brightened her childhood. And as she explored, she discovered more about the woman who had come to seem like a fairy godmother to her: her herbalist’s skills, her still room, her abilities to foresee and heal. She discovered also that the local people believed that Cilly had inherited not just the house but the magical spell-weaving powers that lived on in the house and garden. Slowly, she came to realise that they were right.” (This one needs a reappraisal from me as my original, long ago C+ was based on disapponted expectations.)

50 Ways To Hex Your Lover by Linda Wisdom. @ameliafeministpeabody‘s recent mention inspired me to add this humorous contemporary paranormal, first in a series, to my TBR! The heroine is “a witch who can’t stay out of trouble” and the hero “a vampire cop on the trail of a serial killer.”

Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho. Romantic historical fantasy. The author apparently has mentioned Georgette Heyer and Susannah Clarke (Jonathan Stange and Mr. Norrell) as her major influences. “At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, freed slave, eminently proficient magician, and Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers—one of the most respected organizations throughout all of Britain—ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up.But when his adventure brings him in contact with a most unusual comrade, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, he sets on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain—and the world at large...” (Reading next)

The Witches of All Saints by Jill Tattersall. Vintage gothic Regency. “It is February, 1811, in the countryside outside Brighton, England. In every house are people who have been terrified by the most brutal murder ever to occur in the area. Not only has this murder of well-known young woman shocked and repulsed them; it has also raised their deepest suspicions and fears for the safety of their own lives. For the murder had been the handiwork of more than one person, in fact of a group. A group of witches.Tansy Tremayne, coming to live with her aunt's family on their estate, arrived at the dreadful moment of the murder itself - indeed, witnessed a part of the ritual. Witnessed and was witnessed - by one of the participants. He was wrapped in witch's robe, the thin, diabolical music of the flute playing around him. He was someone Tansy would recognize...“ (Tattersall wrote several of the better gothics in the sixties and seventies. B- from me.)

Wilder Girls by Rory Power

Challenge #26 ~ “A book from the 2019 Goodreads’ Choice Awards.”

My opinion in three sentences:

Wilder Girls was not what I was expecting it to be, in both the good and the bad sense. I anticipated a page-turning thriller packed full of suspense and intrigue as to quite what’s going on, which it was at times, but sadly not at others. On the other hand, Power took it in her own completely unique direction, making it far from predictable, and crafted it with some breath-taking expertise – I don’t know if I’ve felt such a powerful sense of atmosphere from a book before on several distinct occasions.

(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:

Some books help you escape the world. Sometimes, you’re so caught up in a character’s adventures or turmoil, that the rest of reality kind of fades into the background. With Wilder Girls, Power created such a strong atmosphere that the chill resonated deep within me. And that was just the first couple of chapters – it wasn’t as if anything major was going on plot-wise! Whilst leaving me feeling, well, chilled to the bone and harrowed, I was also speechless at the sheer power of such writing, which is everything a reader can want to feel from a book, right? But the best news? It happened again. Independently. At a whole separate part of the book, and whilst I was in an entirely different real-world situation. If you read Wilder Girls just for the impact of Power’s atmospheric manipulation alone, it’ll be well worth it.

A warning for the book:

I loved the first few chapters. I mean, I’ve just spent a considerable age trying to coherently express the strength and depth of atmospheric chill Power stirred within me on my daily bus commute into the city. After that,however, I hit a roadblock. There was a lack of any momentum to help drive me through the first third to half of the novel, until things with Byatt began to spice up (a plot point alluded to in the blurb that took a surprisingly longtime to materialise). But, persevere! Because Power has her own unique take on the storyline (and another harrowing atmosphere to touch your soul with later in the book, too!)

En una ceremonia no televisada, se celebró hoy en Los Angeles, California, la edición número 71 de los Premios del Sindicato de Directores, evento donde se premia la excelencia de realizadores de cine y televisión afiliados a la organización. El cineasta Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) compitió por el galardón a la mejor dirección junto a Bradley Cooper (Nace una estrella), Spike Lee (El infiltrado del KKKlan), Adam McKay (Vice) y Peter Farrelly (responsable de la ganadora en el sindicato de productores: Green Book), pero el mexicano terminó llevándose a casa el máximo reconocimiento de la noche. Al inicio de la ceremonia, Cuarón recibió de manos de Yalitza Aparicio y Marina de Tavira la medalla que tradicionalmente otorgan a los nominados. El director aprovechó para lanzar un mensaje en defensa de los migrantes que han sido descalificados por el presidente Donald Trump:   " Hoy en día, hay más de 70 millones trabajadores domésticos...
